This is such a quaint, yet awesome little museum! Big things come in small packages....is that how it goes?

This place looks more like a beach post office or maybe even a little business but inside are great artifacts- my fave being from Blackbeard's "Queen Anne's Revenge".  If you are a NC Coast history buff or even a pirate fan, HELLO JACK SPARROW, then this is a place you must go and visit. I agree with Chad E. that it is unassuming on the outside, but for Beaufort, and for the NC Coast, this is a great little maritime museum.

It looks like it would be fun for the kids also, but from experience, the adults love it too!

The maritime museum in Beaufort is very unassuming on the outside.  You almost miss it, in fact.  The inside is a lot better, but at the moment it is fairly mobbed by people who want to see the Blackbeard display.  Shame, really, because there is not all that much to see that makes it worth waiting to see.

Yes, there are a few trinkets, and there are a handful of interesting displays, but the really interesting part of this place is actually not the Blackbeard exhibit - that is just what brings in the crowds.  Spend your time on the other items, and let the crowds go for Blackbeard, because there really is not much new there.

There are even a couple of things for the kids in the form of scavenger hunts: One is a list of items to find while the other is a set of clues that you have to find, one after the other, that takes you through the museum.  The checklist is good for young kids, older ones will bore quickly.  The treasure hunt is actually good, but one of the clues is in the movie (making it off-limits at certain times) and others can be so hard that you will give up.  Even one of the workers suggested avoiding it.  Too bad, because it can keep older minds entertained.

Worth a visit, especially as it is free - though donations are requested.

Nice place.  Humble on outside but really lives up to its name on the inside.  Makes sense not too many windows so that they can preserve the artifacts inside.  With not much to do in Beaufort, NC, it makes sense to visit this museum as you stroll the water front.  Future visitors will have more to see once they finish the real life pirate exhibit since the real finds are excavated nearby.

Maritime carpentry and boatbuilding skills are kept alive here at this living history facility, where artisans and boatwrights create new craft using historic tools and techniques.
