It looks like this place is improving.

A pizza lunch is always a better option for meetings. The pizzas were better than last time. It looks like they took there time making and the overall product was great.

This location I like. For some reason different locations vary in service and quality like the one at Pier 39, uugh gross. Owner even threatened to spit on me since I complained about THEIR pizza being soggy and cold. Yea what an a**.

But besides all that it didn't stop me from ordering at this location. Ordered pick up in 20mins. Large half and half pizza. Came out perfect. Love that the guy on the phone was nice.

Great quick pizza place. 3.5 stars

So I went back here again after years of being away and something has changed.  It's not as good as I remembered it.  The sauce is a little watery now.  I don't know whats going on.

I must say North Beach Pizza has the best selection of specialty pizzas of all the places I've been to and ordered from. However, it takes quite a few tries to get this particular pizza joint to deliver a pizza that is just right.

First of all, the pizza usually comes out too greasy. My friends and I have solved this problem by requesting less cheese. This has significantly cut the greasiness and on some days, produce the best pizza ever. However, I have to give this place three stars because it really is hit or miss. On good days, the bacon on the Cable Car slice is crispy, the onions green and crunchy, and the chicken plentiful and yummy. We usually half and half that kind with the Aloha special, and North Beach does a good job being generous with fresh toppings. However, on bad days, the dough is too tough or stale, or the grease seeps through the cardboard box. Today was a good day, so everyone in the house was excited, which inspired this review.

Good luck in the future, North Beach in Excelsior! You will always be my last minute resort for junk food.

Um, why did I expect better?  Not sure why, but maybe because of the "I heard it's good pizza" that I hear floating around for this place. Unfortunately from my experience, I won't be repeating that. Seems like great place for a drink-too-much kind of pizza night, but by far nothing special.  Pizza was somewhat  bland and unimaginative, and I kept thinking back to my college days of eating late night PJs pizza that brought me so much more pleasure.

Will humor friends who want to give it a try but there are a lot better places for pizza.

Having moved to the outskirts of San Francisco - I have found a lot of perks of living outside of Nob Hill, where I used to reside.  For instance, the thought of going to Target, Nordstrom, or Costco is not met with a horrific mental image of a parking fiasco, ridiculous amounts of people, or a bumper to bumper nightmare on the streets.  Instead, I can easily take the freeway to South SF, or Daly City, and shop with the rest of suburbia, in peace.  Another perk is that wherever I go, I can park easily without worrying about meter cards, quarters, or WWIII breaking out on the street over a parking spot.

That said, the one downside to living where I do now concerns my relationship with food in general.  It has deteriorated significantly since living here.  The idea of going out to eat at __________ (insert any of my favorite restaurants) is met with a mental aversion due to sheer distance.  Now, I seem to eat at home all of the time - and have only headed out for dinner twice in 2 weeks.  This is a new record for me - I don't think I've eaten home this much since the age of 13.

In this area, no matter the time of day, my delivery restaurant selection is dismal - and it's seriously affecting my relationship with one of my favorite web-sites:  http://www.delivery.com!

For instance, last night at 9 pm, I had a choice of 2 Chinese restaurants (neither good), 2 pizza places, and oddly enough, 3 Indian restaurants located nowhere nearby but still willing to deliver.  Unfortunately, I wasn't going to order Indian from a place I don't know, wasn't craving Chinese at this moment, and of the two pizza parlors, I already tried one and wasn't impressed.

The one I had tried would be North Beach Pizza.

Don't get me wrong - the pizza was OK.  The crust was thin enough with a good selection of toppings on it, but there was just enough oil to drown the pizza.  Now, I love fat and oil as much as the next person, and I know flavor - - but my pizza drowning in oil also means that it was soggy and flimsy.  There's not a lot worse than a pizza that droops and starts losing all of its toppings when you pick it up.

Toppings were generous, and garlic was king on the pizza.  The size of  the pizza was impressive.  It was bigger than most standard XL pizzas - but more of mediocrity is not necessarily a good thing.

However, given that we were in the middle of unpacking and cooking was near impossible - - North Beach came through with hot food and it beats starving.

Okay pizza, but the restaurant can be impossible to deal with.

Strike #1: Cut-off time to order salad is earlier than pizza.  One time I called and was told I could only get pizza because it was late.  Okay, I guess I can deal with that.

Strike #2: Called to order, realize I'm short of cash to pay for the purchase and ask to pay with a credit card.  They've "turned the credit card machine off for the night," so I couldn't pay and had to order from someplace else.

Strike #3: When my flight back to San Francisco from an east coast business trip is delayed, my wife calls to ask for the latest time we can order.  She's told midnight, which seems good for a Friday.  At 11:15, I finally escape the delayed flight and get home.  We call and are told that the kitchen has been closed for half an hour.  11:15 pm on a Friday?  What happened to midnight?

Strike #4: Getting told that the kitchen is closed repeatedly is kind of a pain when there seems to be no rhyme or reason, so ordering from you is a two-step process where we have to call early in the day to find out when the delivery cutoff is, and then we call back to place our order.

Strike #5: I tried calling at 9:10 pm on a weeknight.  There's not even an answer.  I checked the hours on-line, and the store is allegedly open.  I call a few more times, just in case you're that busy, but there's not an answer.  Am I ordering so much pizza that you're tired of answering my calls?

Sorry, three strikes and you're out.  Or, you should be, but I am not strong enough to cut you off before these five.  I am now, and my orders go to Mozzarella di Bufala in West Portal.

3 stars for the pizza, 1 star for delivery.

Last week we had two pizzas delivered to the office to celebrate something.  We got a north beach special and north beach veggie special.

Deliverd pizza sucks, let''s face it. Thus I'll never understand why it's one of the most popular foods for delivery. Actually I do understand. It's the psychological pleasure of looking forward to the pizza arriving. That's all it is, because once you have had one slice you're pretty much in the cold and soggy. And eating delivered pizza at your desk at work? Not priceless.

North Beach pizza is an institution. Whoever started it has to be one wealthy mo-fo at this point. So there's the "well that's true so it must be good" factor. If I was ordering for friends or just myself I wouldn't go there. But for the office it would suffice just fine. I have to say though, North Beach knows what they're doing in terms of flavors and what to put where with their pizza specials. They tasted exactly how pizza should taste, despite the ever-predictable sog.

And I really want to commend the delivery person for trying hard when he couldn't find parking, and eventually making it  all the way up to the office. Extra star for that guy, and he wasn't exhasperated or anything.

Has anyone noticed the price of pizza has skyrocketed? We got two extra larges and an order of garlic bread and paid $60.

um.  WOW.  i've never tried north beach pizza EVER in my life - shocker! - despite hearing good things about it and being a generous lover of pizza (yes, i spread my lovin' all over).

so it was a TOTAL fluke that had north beach pizza for the first time yesterday.  i was volunteering with Tax Aid (http://www.tax-aid.org), and this is what we were offered as lunch and as a treat for our taxational generosity.  the lady in charge of our location ordered us the chicken pesto, a veggie, and a hawaiian.

let me sum up the number one reason north beach pizza hits my spot: CHEESE TO CARB RATIO!  sooooo much cheese...such yummo crust...and greasy enough to satisfy.

minus one star because the cheese was a just little bit bland.

the hawaiian was solidly good, and that's saying something because i don't usually like the hawaiian.  ( i'm opposed to fruit being mixed with my food with the exception of tomatoes, you see).

My household has ordered from this place probably...around 25+ times over a couple of years.  When we first started ordering from this place the service was fantastic over the phone.  Friendly service, got my pizza in within the 45 minutes, and it was perfectly cooked.  It's progressively gotten worse since we've started ordering from them.  Rude ass people over the phone, especially this one lady over the phone who sounds like she would rather be somewhere else half the time....burned my pizza on several occasions (really?), and have even delivered my pizza to the wrong address on several occasions (wow, I know it happens but when we've ordered from you that many times you should get it right).  Now ordering from them is like a crap shoot...will my pizza be decently cooked or be an undercooked or overcooked piece of shit?  Don't bother ordering from this place until they get their shit together.

4-5 Star pizza when they decide to cook it correctly.
1 Star for delivery/employee attitude.

I tried this again at work, due to my boss LOVIN this place.  I tried the meatball sandwich instead of Pizza.

The lettuce was wilted brown, the sauce was like ketchup, the meatball itself was almost tasteless, but smelled a bit aged.  The bread was brick hard and slightly burned. I no longer was hungry.

I cannot recommend this place, not even if I was starving (and I was truly wanting to enjoy some meatballs).

Last Saturday I ended up in North Beach.

I know.

Meeting up with friends who'd been participating in the North Beach Bar Crawl.

I know.

Part of my duty, as the friend who drove from the East Bay and showed up to the party four hours late was to be the babysitter of the drunk friend.

I hate this role and will not willingly accept it, so I forced my friends to leave the bar and eat some god damn dinner so they could sober up and I could guzzle beer instead of making sure they weren't falling in the gutter.

(Enter North Beach Pizza)

Scene: Four girls stand  by the counter waiting to be seated.

Sammy: ______ Try to act sober

______: (cross eyed stare and drunken smirk)

Biggest Ass-Hat in all of San Francisco: (flags over NBP server) Where is my fucking pizza? I want my fucking pizza. Why don't you run along and get me fuckity fucking pizza.

BAHIAOSF's friends: dur-her-her-her-her.

NBP Server: I'm going to get your pizza and then you need to leave.

BASIAOSF: THIS IS HOW YOU TREAT CUSTOMERS? YOU KICK THEM OUT!!! I'M A PAYING CUSTOMER AND YOU"RE GOING TO KICK ME OUT!!!?

_________ & Sammy's other sober friend: You're an asshole, why don't you just leave and let people enjoy their dinner?

BASIAOSF:  You don't even know me! You've known me fore 1 second!

SOSF: That's all I need.

The argument went on like this for about 10 minutes with the Ass-Hat swearing and threatening and being an all around douche nozzle, my friends trying to help out the poor NBP server and me pacing around like an autistic child who freaks out and starts hitting themselves when people fight.

After Ass-Hat was finally forced out by his friend, who by the way, must be as big of chodes as Ass-Hat for being friends with such a scumbag, we were promptly seated.

Our server was darling and smiley and didn't bat an eyelash at bat-crazy _________ who was oddly engrossed in an in-depth conversation with the 1-year-old seated behind us.

I didn't eat pizza, but ordered a Greek salad, cause my willpower is off the charts and I am probably the skinniest and most driven runner in the entire world. I also ate two pieces of cheese slathered garlic bread and a Peroni.

Our meal was tasty and prompt and when we finished, NBP server who kicked out the Ass-Hat came over to our table and thanked my friends for stepping in and helping her out and told us that our dinner was on her.

It was definitely a pay-it forward moment, and I was instantly humbled by my ballsy friends.

The pizza is good, but not as good as the dedicated staff who are on the front lines of the battle against privileged ex-Greek system folk who feel entitled and that it's acceptable for them to cause a giant scene in a restaurant, even if the restaurant is a pizza parlor.

Huzzah for brass-balled women.

**Script is not verbatim, but interpreted by me, who only caught half the interaction, because I was pacing around, nervously eating my hair.

great California Pizza,
only wish they would open some down in West LA....
i.e. follow what Barney's did the the cult of San Fran and move it down here...
instead of the burger, brings some decent pizza...
great bang for your buck...
as good as it gets for Americanized West Coast Pizza...
(for the record can't c.f to Chicago i.e. Giordano's or Ginos...)

It was a cold sunday afternoon and it was the perfect day to lounge around at home, watch a couple of movies and order in pizza...and so we did.  I was craving for North Beach Pizza and the closest one is this location.  The pizza came in 30 minutes, which was impressive because they told it me it was going to take 45 minutes.

Anyway, it tasted like the pizza was under-baked and it was a bit soggy.  The taste was good, but it was not hot when it arrived.  It actually tasted a lot better when I reheated it in our toaster oven.

Used the online ordering and it was actually quite fun.  They even have coupons which you can add to your order which made it quite convenient (I didn't have to go through the kitchen drawers looking for a coupon). They also have some pretty decent specials online. Anyway....my pizza arrived real quick...30 minutes or so. The pizza itself was ok. I noticed that the dough was kinda hard.  The toppings were great but I couldn't help but keep focusing on how "doughy" the pizza was.

Maybe it wasn't my day.  I will defenitely give it another shot because it wasn't that bad and I really liked the online ordering and how fast my pizza arrived!

I love North Beach's Pizza! I love that the toppings go underneath the cheese; it's simply a quirk that I like. I love the cheese on the pizza, although I must say consistently that I love my Little Joe's. They do their crust and sauce unlike other pizza parlor, restaurant, or joint that I've ever had the pleasure of patronizing. (Yes, I'm a big fan for Italian food and pizza in case you haven't noticed.) I've also been to their location in the North Beach but I'll review that location separately simply because of the different experiences I've had with their staff and the different items I've ordered at each one.

I had the clam and garlic pizza with my friend, as well as an order of garlic bread with cheese. The garlic bread was simply fantastic and had a lot of garlic. I fell in love, although my friend probably didn't. She probably was glad that I didn't eat too many pieces. The clam and garlic pizza was a bit oily but the pizza simply was fantastic nonetheless after we got past the little bit of greasiness. The price was pretty reasonable given that I often have a craving for some non-traditional toppings (pepperoni, sausage, etc.) but I've often turned away because most restaurants simply want to charge through the teeth for clam pizzas. Oh and I must say, the amount of clams was pretty good although they could definitely improve and I wouldn't complain at all!

We were promptly seated but this is not too much to note to be honest given that there was only one other table occupied while we were dining. The staff was friendly and attended to us a lot (although this could just be because it was a slow time for them).

Thick crust and hearty toppings. This pizza's so heavy, one slice will do ya. Which is a good thing, since it's not very good.

And how come it took over an hour for them to deliver my pizza on a Wednesday night, when I live a mere 3 blocks away???

Best pizza ever. EVER. I usually order a pizza with extra cheese and extra sauce only; you'd think that a request that simple it would be hard to screw up. Well, most of the places do except for North Beach. Good sauce, nice gooey cheese, not rubbery at all. Perfect crust. My husband likes their BBQ chicken pizza. It was delicious, and like I said earlier, I don't usually like "California-Style" pizza.
The same cannot be said for their pasta dishes, however. The gnocchi tasted like it was from the freezer section at Trader Joe's. The linguini and clams tasted like someone poured a can of Campbell's Clam Chowder over noodles. Then again, it's a pizza parlor, right. Hence the five stars. Go North Beach.

How the Grinches at North Beach Pizza stole Christmas

Once uppon a time in managed care company far far away......the week long department wide Secret Santa comes to a close. And just like every year the revelations along w/ a good lunch take place at noon. Little did the little UBHlings know that the Grinches at North Beach had other plans for them.

Grinch 1: Lets tell them that it will be ready at 12:00.
Grinch 2: Then I'll tell them 12:30.
Grinch 3: Then at 12:30, I'll say the truck broke down and say 1:00.
Grinch 4: Then I will say there is a problem w/ the ovens and say 1:30! LOL...these people think we will actually feed them *har har har*

As the ravenous UBHlings sadly go back to their cubicle huts, and feebly do thier work....they (w/ teary eyes) glance at the empty meeting room, longing for some food.

"That is it, cancel the order! My UBHlings will not be hungry this Christmas!" Our fearless leader proclaims.

With a rush, and a call to Celloville.....10 pizzas were ordered. Before anyone know what happened the fattened UBHlings sat snuggly in their cubicle huts happy to know that North Beach Pizza will never recive another order from UBH again. Fin.

Updating this review...
I've tried other pizza places that deliver to my place, and this is the best pizza around. It's something about their toppings that really stand out above the rest. I still wish they had a thin crust option. And I wish they had one of those heat preserving sleeves for when they deliver so the pizza comes extra super  hot.

Solid pizza, was delivered to our hotel significantly sooner than promised.  In my state of intoxication, I cannot speak too much to the quality.  It did the job, was reasonably priced, and didn't require a walk, cab ride or potential DUI.

All I can say, if you go to "North Beach Pizza", make sure you go to this one, it is the best one in SF, all the others seem to lack quality. I don't know why this is, maybe the management is better. Anyway, the pizza here is good for a sit down, very fresh and tasty ingredients over all.

Crappy pizza...
crust was so limp you the toppings would fall off even when you folded it.  And of course it was not very thin (which gives it no excuse).  WAY too much cheese.  Not enough sauce.  Not enough toppings.

This is really quite a pitiful excuse for a pizza.  DOMINOES makes a better pizza.  PIZZA HUT makes a better pizza.

All in all, though, at least I didn't have the gassiness of Cafe Flatulitude, and at least I was full after I ate.

We had some friends visiting from out of town last week. You want to have everyone get together at our house? Tonight? Sure!

ACK! Last minute party over at our house! To eliminate any laborious preparation, mad rush over to Trader Joe's etc. etc., Husband and I decided instead  to take the easier route and order pizza. Zante's pizza crossed our minds, but their delivery can be sketch, and I didn't want to worry about where the heck our pizza was with a house full of hungry guests. So, North Beach Pizza it is!

We ordered 3 large pizzas. One veggie, one Coit tower special and one with just pepperoni. Their larges contain 12 slices. The crust is, by default, thick (but I think you can request thin crust). However, even with this thick crust, the veggie one was a bit soggy in the center. It was piled high with fresh veggies though, which was great! The meat eaters seemed to inhale their slices with no complaints. We had an Australian in the house, and he really enjoyed the pizza! I guess it's really hard to find good pizza in Australia!

Fast and reliable delivery. Good prices. What more could we ask for in planning a last minute get together at our house!

I've lived in the Excelsior since the early 80s.  I don't eat pizza all that often and when I had a craving for one I usually ordered from Bravo.  But they don't take credit cards and one night I had a craving, but no cash so I Yelped the Excelsior District for a pizza joint and saw North Beach so I went online and ordered one.  It was absolutely fantastic!  I just ordered another one last night and it too was just as good as the first.  I highly recommend this place.   The service is fast, the ingredients are fresh and they don't skimp on anything!

I had it delivered to the office, so this review is based on waiting to eat with the cheese and crushed red pepper in my hand....
But even waiting (longer than what they said) and drooling at the smell as the dude brought in the boxes and then waiting until it was set-up and the flag went down to eat, I was impressed by the quality of the food.
Ordered cheese, pepperoni, spicy combo, combo, a large salad and a couple other pizzas that were gone before I had a chance to enjoy, and they all tasted very good.
First the salad-- we ordered a large amount and the salad can in a large foil tin with the usual pre-packaged salad things (carrots, red caggage) and covered in large crunchy slices of tomatoes. Now I'm a fan of presentation, but when ordering a salad for 30 people and there's only 20 slices of tomato, someone is getting the tomato shaft-- and that won't be me. I think they should dice tomatoes so the office isn't pissed at the IT group who's closest to the break room.
The main course: All the pizza was greasy, chessey and gooey. The three things pizza should be. After microwaving it for 1/2 minute, I found the pizza was back to it's heated glory, ready to make a shiney reflection on my face. (Note to self: wash face tonight.)
So minus a star for being rather late. Other than that: I'm on the North Beach Diet. And out of my skinny jeans!

My experience with using an online coupon here (this comment to R.A.) is that the pizza dough was fresh, the sauce was just as good, the toppings just as generous.

Someone complained about too much cheese.  I actually order LIGHT cheese, meaning if you want less cheese, you ask them and they will accommodate, no problem.

Folks, if you want pizza and want to cut the calories, just ask for half the cheese they normally put.  Guilt-free pizza.  You're welcome.

What to do with the crusts the day after?  Are you kidding?  Put them in the toaster oven (not the microwave)* for a couple minutes, then smear butter on them.  Too good.

*If you don't have a toaster oven, put it under the broiler or skewer it with a fork and hold it over an open flame if you have gas...  your stove, dude.

The crust of a North Beach Pizza pizza is like sour dough.  It's crusty on the outside and soft and doughy on the inside.  So good.

No, New York people, it's not New York style pizza.  It's San Francisco style pizza.  Whaddya want?

Anybody remember pizza from Woolworth's at Powell & Market?  (I'm dating myself to even mention this!)

Two pizza shops on Grant.

Grant & Union
They have a bouncer at the door at night.  Plead your case to the Judge/Bouncer and he'll determine if you are worth enough to go in.  If you aren't getting a table you allowed to enter  tell them your order and then wait for your pizza on the street and you'll be called when it's ready.  It's not the worse and it's not the best, but I do recommend the Golden Gate Pizza.  The pizza has been doughy on occasion.

Pizza isn't amazing and the service is so/so.  What do you expect from a pizza shop.  The Golden Gate Small is around $17.  I wonder if they put gold shavings on the pizza?  It's also on the doughy side with the bottom not too crispy.  Three Stars

this is some of the BEST pizza i've EVER TASTED!   I've only gone once, which is surprising as I live practically next door and they have the exhaust vent blowing onto the sidewalk so everytime I walk by I get a terribly delicious whiff of pizza which makes me want to run inside and gobble up 10 slices.  I've had at least had 8 different people visit me and go "i don't know why, but I really want pizza all of a sudden!" the smell is just THAT tantalizing.

The people that work there are so friendly and nice, I wave to the guys making pizza in the window everyday as I pass by on the way home from work.  I know they also have some regular italian fare in addition to the pizza, so you can get a salad or pasta instead if you're sitting inside rather than just picking up.

There is booth style seating available and the waitresses/waiters are definitely non nonsense but get the job done.

Monica's family has eaten here a lot while in the city. It's very capable pizza and pasta, when you need it. I've been a few times now, and I've never had a wait, though we went on Friday evening and just missed a wait from the dinner rush. It doesn't have a ton of seating, so don't everyone go at once!

Compared to the other pseudo-Italian options I've been to nearby, it's better priced and has had better service, perhaps because it's a block (or two?) off Columbus. There's a coupon for it somewhere in the city yellow pages. Something like $4 off a second plate of pasta? Worthwhile enough that occasionally Monica's mother will check phone books at city telephones for it.

EXCELLENT pizza...... well.......... ONLY if you don't use the online coupons when ordering over the web.  You see, if you use the coupons when ordering at night, they give you the older pizzas that were made earlier in the day.

Other than that, my pizza was loaded with toppings of exceptional quality.  Service speed is always consistent (delivery in 40 minutes every time).

Their crust, however gets very hard the next day... even if you put it in the oven or microwave.   :-(

Overall pretty good pizza, for California.  One of the better ones in the city for sure.  Delivery is slow sometimes, so prepare for that.   Other than that I have no complaints:)

My favorite pizza place in SF is actually a chain (shhhhhh!) which I constantly feel guilty about. But when the pressure of San Franciscan restaurant snobbery overpowers my desire for 5-star pizza, I call up 4-star North Beach Pizza, which is still pretty amazing, just not my favorite. The pizza always arrives extremely hot... makes me wonder if it sits on the radiator on its way over here. Drivers are friendly and don't mind me answering the door in my underwear... a major plus considering how much I hate to put pants on.

I got a chicken parmesan sandwich and fried zucchini here for takeout. The sandwich was an inedible greasy brick and the zucchini was torn into little bits (think squashed fish sticks). The pizza is greasy and unappealing but edible in a pinch.
