This is the only decent pizza place around the area. The others try to make different flavors and toppings to make theirs sound more attractive. This is the only place that uses decent quality toppings and cheeses. This place is pretty busy area, both the restaurant and the block.
Their decent pizzas do come at a price. -

Mmmm I could eat pizza every single day of my breathing life.
Thank god my co-worker has great pizza taste.
As a tradition with my co-workers ever year, we run the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge 5k race, then head on over to eat some pizza here at North Beach. They have the best tomato sauce ever!!! And the best Margarita pizza ever. MMM MMM good!!!! -

North Beach Pizza can make delicious pizza, but they're really inconsistent with quality. Whenever you call in and they're busy, they'll ask you to hold. That's a good warning that your pizza will comes out somewhat soggy.
The pizza dough here is definitely hand tossed. How can I tell? The super inconsistency in the pizza bread. Sometimes the pizza's middle is really thin while the the areas around the crust are quite thick. Other times, it'll be evenly spread until the crust. Why does this matter? The pizza sauce gets drippy if the middle is thin so it'll end up being a soggy middle with dry bread around the crust. One other problem is the toppings will just slide off the pizza due to the thinness of the middle when you're holding it.
That gripe aside, their pizza bread is soft and fluffy. It tastes great when they do it right. Their sauce is pretty average, it tastes like tomato. There's a good amount of cheese on the pizza, which is great for cheese lovers. Other topping-wise, the toppings are pretty fresh and tasty. They have coupons, which makes their pizza a really great value for what you're paying. -

The pizza was pretty good. But the ravioli we ordered was forgettable - complete mush (although the sauce was decent). This is a solidly average pizza joint. No need to say anymore.

The service was poopy, they serve cokes in a can which means no refills, the pizza was good but if my husband hadn't eaten like a garbage disposal we wouldn't have taken any left overs home because the liquid from the veggies on the Za leaked all over the pan, so it was crispy and good when we ate it (all in about 5 minutes) but wouldn't have lasted any longer before becoming mush. A little too much cheese for my liking and not enough shrooms but it was still hot and fresh. Would come back. Oh the salads are not very good, just some chopped romain, carrots and red cabbage- thats it. And bad bottled salad dressing, so ranch lovers this is not your spot.

Traditional pizza with a little twist!
Venue: Kind of ghetto medium size restaurant. Most people order togo. When I went on a weekday there where almost no customers there.
Service: Not extremely tentative. They are laid back.
Food:
- Aloha special Medium (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) - $15.40 Canadian Bacon and pineapple. I love this combination in general.
- San Francisco special Medium (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) - $15.40 Clams and Garlic. Wow I actually like this one. I recommend! :)
Price: Pretty cheap for good pizza that did not disappoint.
Overall: Wouldn't mind coming back. -

Not a neighborhood I would seek out but with my student friend attending CCSF this is a good choice in " that " area for pizza. Not trying to be arrogant, but sorry the location just ain't my cup of tea.
Pizza pie was great, ingredients could have been more generous but it was tasty & crust crispy. Thought the pricing was fair maybe even good. Waitress with an Italian accent ..... I was kinda surprised ( I say bonasera ) was very attentive. The pizza plopped on the table very quick which I appreciated.. All these elements show that North Beach Pizza is the voice of a good pizza experience based on a long history.
There was a strange guy (I know I am judging, and yes "let he who has not sinned cast the first stone....blah blah blah) hanging around the front of the restaurant playing dice by himself. I thought hmmmm, this is dicey who is this dude? When we were leaving discovered he is the "delivery guy".
Will go back again when the pizza mood strikes and I am playing taxi for the the student. -

My first residence in San Francisco was in North Beach. I would be a regular at the North Beach Pizza at the old Grant and Union location. That started a love affair that has lasted for over twenty years.
Since moving to the Mission District, I was happy that a franchise eventually opened in the Excelsior District, which was willing to deliver to the Mission and Bernal Heights. Thank God for North Beach Pizza, I would of gone hungry without them, even going so far as to program a "pizza" button on the auto-dialer. That key is always directed to the mighty North Beach Pizza.
My favorite pizza is the Verde Special. It satisfies the vegetarians in your social circle while offering a pizza that is unique and delectably tasty. The combination of spinach, feta, and pesto is heaven. Although the Vegans you hang out with may pass on this one, they are really missing one of life's great pleasures. For the carnivore, there is plenty of traditional hearty meat selections from your basic pepperoni pizza to a North Beach Special.
If you haven't experienced this San Francisco institution, what the heck are you waiting for? -

There's still Costco pizza on the table.
There you have it, North Beach Pizza is the pizza of choice over drunk men.

It seems that many of the bad reviews are from delivery experiences. Honestly, if you want to get the full experience of a restaurant you don't order delivery. You either eat in or pick it up yourself! Having done both, I can honestly say that North Beach pizzas are pretty good!
My favorite is the sausage and pepperoni pizza. The pizza always has a lot of cheese and the crust is delicious. They probably brush it with butter or garlic... I'm not sure but it's the only crust my boyfriend will eat!
The combo can be a bit salty but that's obviously due to the amount of salty beef on the pizza. That's why I always just stick with sausage and pepperoni.
Oveall, I'd say skip the delivery and just go and grab one for yourself! They also have online coupons. I got $2 off a medium pizza just for mentioning the coupon over the phone, even though I couldn't find it on their website the last time around. -

Fresh ingredients and a speedy delivery are not enough to save this pizza.
I ordered the Golden Gate Special (pesto sauce, chicken, mushrooms, garlic and onions) for delivery. The pie arrived promptly and was piping hot and smelled fantastic. I was pumped.
However, the thin crust was not at all thin (I need Gioia thin) and the cheese load was way too much. This lead to a doughy and cheesy nightmare which I was able to get through due to major hunger and again, the great smell of fresh ingredients.
Take home point, less is more...less dough, less cheese, let the pie breathe. -

My favorite pizza in San Francisco!
My brother and I have searched around for almost two years to find a place that serves better pizza than North Beach and we simply can't! We initially tried out this location because it was walking distance from our house and have since tried others both in and our of the neighborhood.
Our favorite combination is pineapple with feta and they do an AMAZING job at North Beach Pizza. The feta and pineapple are aplenty with the perfect amount of cheese and sauce to complete the puzzle. The pizza tastes extremely fresh, and the 20+ minutes you will wait for the food is well worth it.
While the pizza is definitely the star of the show I recently tried their pasta dishes as well. Very big portions for the price, served with bread and butter and quite tasty. Definitely make your way to North Beach the next time you're looking for a great slice! -

I have found my new favourite neighbourhood pizza place.
The toppings choices are vast and they don't skimp. Plus you have your pick of a few different crusts and sauces. Their crust is the perfect texture; it's got some give, it's fluffy, it's crispy, it's hard to beat.
I've eaten in & taken-out:
- Eating in is nothing special. It's dark, you sit in a lack-luster booth, and get table service minus the small talk from closed-lip waitpersons.
- Take-out has never failed me. I order on-line, it claims "Ready in 20 mins." and it consistently is.
The pizza is great, one day perhaps I'll venture to other corners of the menu- they offer pastas, salads, entree meals and side dishes too. -

I like this place, especially if I want a thick crust. Otherwise I usually order elsewhere. Nothing on the menu stands out and the quality of the pizzas aren't top notch. Online ordering is the major bonus for this place.

Hands down my favorite pizza in SF. The coit tower is the bomb!! I think its the dough they use that makes it so yummy. I am usually not one who cares for the crust but N. Beach Pizza is so good I love the crust!

When it's good, it's very good. But when I order delivery, half the time the crust is soggy. Soggy-crust north beach pizza is not terrible (I still give 3 stars) but it's disappointing.

this is a good place to add variety to your pizza culinary needs. overall, I would say the place is very average. Salad was very good, Bread was hard and the pizza could have been warmer. the chicken wings were to messy and spicy for our group. I am glad I tried the place, but most likely I will not be going back as there are too many good pizza places in the downtown SF area.

Last Saturday I ended up in North Beach.
I know.
Meeting up with friends who'd been participating in the North Beach Bar Crawl.
I know.
Part of my duty, as the friend who drove from the East Bay and showed up to the party four hours late was to be the babysitter of the drunk friend.
I hate this role and will not willingly accept it, so I forced my friends to leave the bar and eat some god damn dinner so they could sober up and I could guzzle beer instead of making sure they weren't falling in the gutter.
(Enter North Beach Pizza)
Scene: Four girls stand by the counter waiting to be seated.
Sammy: ______ Try to act sober
______: (cross eyed stare and drunken smirk)
Biggest Ass-Hat in all of San Francisco: (flags over NBP server) Where is my fucking pizza? I want my fucking pizza. Why don't you run along and get me fuckity fucking pizza.
BAHIAOSF's friends: dur-her-her-her-her.
NBP Server: I'm going to get your pizza and then you need to leave.
BASIAOSF: THIS IS HOW YOU TREAT CUSTOMERS? YOU KICK THEM OUT!!! I'M A PAYING CUSTOMER AND YOU"RE GOING TO KICK ME OUT!!!?
_________ & Sammy's other sober friend: You're an asshole, why don't you just leave and let people enjoy their dinner?
BASIAOSF: You don't even know me! You've known me fore 1 second!
SOSF: That's all I need.
The argument went on like this for about 10 minutes with the Ass-Hat swearing and threatening and being an all around douche nozzle, my friends trying to help out the poor NBP server and me pacing around like an autistic child who freaks out and starts hitting themselves when people fight.
After Ass-Hat was finally forced out by his friend, who by the way, must be as big of chodes as Ass-Hat for being friends with such a scumbag, we were promptly seated.
Our server was darling and smiley and didn't bat an eyelash at bat-crazy _________ who was oddly engrossed in an in-depth conversation with the 1-year-old seated behind us.
I didn't eat pizza, but ordered a Greek salad, cause my willpower is off the charts and I am probably the skinniest and most driven runner in the entire world. I also ate two pieces of cheese slathered garlic bread and a Peroni.
Our meal was tasty and prompt and when we finished, NBP server who kicked out the Ass-Hat came over to our table and thanked my friends for stepping in and helping her out and told us that our dinner was on her.
It was definitely a pay-it forward moment, and I was instantly humbled by my ballsy friends.
The pizza is good, but not as good as the dedicated staff who are on the front lines of the battle against privileged ex-Greek system folk who feel entitled and that it's acceptable for them to cause a giant scene in a restaurant, even if the restaurant is a pizza parlor.
Huzzah for brass-balled women.
**Script is not verbatim, but interpreted by me, who only caught half the interaction, because I was pacing around, nervously eating my hair.1 Previous Review: Show all »

How the Grinches at North Beach Pizza stole Christmas
Once uppon a time in managed care company far far away......the week long department wide Secret Santa comes to a close. And just like every year the revelations along w/ a good lunch take place at noon. Little did the little UBHlings know that the Grinches at North Beach had other plans for them.
Grinch 1: Lets tell them that it will be ready at 12:00.
Grinch 2: Then I'll tell them 12:30.
Grinch 3: Then at 12:30, I'll say the truck broke down and say 1:00.
Grinch 4: Then I will say there is a problem w/ the ovens and say 1:30! LOL...these people think we will actually feed them *har har har*
As the ravenous UBHlings sadly go back to their cubicle huts, and feebly do thier work....they (w/ teary eyes) glance at the empty meeting room, longing for some food.
"That is it, cancel the order! My UBHlings will not be hungry this Christmas!" Our fearless leader proclaims.
With a rush, and a call to Celloville.....10 pizzas were ordered. Before anyone know what happened the fattened UBHlings sat snuggly in their cubicle huts happy to know that North Beach Pizza will never recive another order from UBH again. Having moved to the outskirts of San Francisco - I have found a lot of perks of living outside of Nob Hill, where I used to reside. For instance, the thought of going to Target, Nordstrom, or Costco is not met with a horrific mental image of a parking fiasco, ridiculous amounts of people, or a bumper to bumper nightmare on the streets. Instead, I can easily take the freeway to South SF, or Daly City, and shop with the rest of suburbia, in peace. Another perk is that wherever I go, I can park easily without worrying about meter cards, quarters, or WWIII breaking out on the street over a parking spot.
That said, the one downside to living where I do now concerns my relationship with food in general. It has deteriorated significantly since living here. The idea of going out to eat at __________ (insert any of my favorite restaurants) is met with a mental aversion due to sheer distance. Now, I seem to eat at home all of the time - and have only headed out for dinner twice in 2 weeks. This is a new record for me - I don't think I've eaten home this much since the age of 13.
In this area, no matter the time of day, my delivery restaurant selection is dismal - and it's seriously affecting my relationship with one of my favorite web-sites: http://www.delivery.com!
For instance, last night at 9 pm, I had a choice of 2 Chinese restaurants (neither good), 2 pizza places, and oddly enough, 3 Indian restaurants located nowhere nearby but still willing to deliver. Unfortunately, I wasn't going to order Indian from a place I don't know, wasn't craving Chinese at this moment, and of the two pizza parlors, I already tried one and wasn't impressed.
The one I had tried would be North Beach Pizza.
Don't get me wrong - the pizza was OK. The crust was thin enough with a good selection of toppings on it, but there was just enough oil to drown the pizza. Now, I love fat and oil as much as the next person, and I know flavor - - but my pizza drowning in oil also means that it was soggy and flimsy. There's not a lot worse than a pizza that droops and starts losing all of its toppings when you pick it up.
Toppings were generous, and garlic was king on the pizza. The size of the pizza was impressive. It was bigger than most standard XL pizzas - but more of mediocrity is not necessarily a good thing.
However, given that we were in the middle of unpacking and cooking was near impossible - - North Beach came through with hot food and it beats starving. -

Last week we had two pizzas delivered to the office to celebrate something. We got a north beach special and north beach veggie special.
Deliverd pizza sucks, let''s face it. Thus I'll never understand why it's one of the most popular foods for delivery. Actually I do understand. It's the psychological pleasure of looking forward to the pizza arriving. That's all it is, because once you have had one slice you're pretty much in the cold and soggy. And eating delivered pizza at your desk at work? Not priceless.
North Beach pizza is an institution. Whoever started it has to be one wealthy mo-fo at this point. So there's the "well that's true so it must be good" factor. If I was ordering for friends or just myself I wouldn't go there. But for the office it would suffice just fine. I have to say though, North Beach knows what they're doing in terms of flavors and what to put where with their pizza specials. They tasted exactly how pizza should taste, despite the ever-predictable sog.
And I really want to commend the delivery person for trying hard when he couldn't find parking, and eventually making it all the way up to the office. Extra star for that guy, and he wasn't exhasperated or anything.
Has anyone noticed the price of pizza has skyrocketed? We got two extra larges and an order of garlic bread and paid $60.Listed in: Is there any good Pizza in San…

crust was so limp you the toppings would fall off even when you folded it. And of course it was not very thin (which gives it no excuse). WAY too much cheese. Not enough sauce. Not enough toppings.

We had some friends visiting from out of town last week. You want to have everyone get together at our house? Tonight? Sure!
ACK! Last minute party over at our house! To eliminate any laborious preparation, mad rush over to Trader Joe's etc. etc., Husband and I decided instead to take the easier route and order pizza. Zante's pizza crossed our minds, but their delivery can be sketch, and I didn't want to worry about where the heck our pizza was with a house full of hungry guests. So, North Beach Pizza it is!
We ordered 3 large pizzas. One veggie, one Coit tower special and one with just pepperoni. Their larges contain 12 slices. The crust is, by default, thick (but I think you can request thin crust). However, even with this thick crust, the veggie one was a bit soggy in the center. It was piled high with fresh veggies though, which was great! The meat eaters seemed to inhale their slices with no complaints. We had an Australian in the house, and he really enjoyed the pizza! I guess it's really hard to find good pizza in Australia!
Fast and reliable delivery. Good prices. What more could we ask for in planning a last minute get together at our house!Listed in: pizza pizza!

But besides all that it didn't stop me from ordering at this location. Ordered pick up in 20mins. Large half and half pizza. Came out perfect. Love that the guy on the phone was nice.

Since I went to Balboa High School, we would sometimes have Pizza Parties and usually ordered from North Beach.
I never really liked the PIZZA. It was okay, but I just didn't like the SAUCE. It felt too tingly. But a couple days ago I ordered a caesar salad, ravioli, and garlic bread with cheese. I really liked it and the delivery was quick.
I would stick to the pasta + garlic bread. -

I must say North Beach Pizza has the best selection of specialty pizzas of all the places I've been to and ordered from. However, it takes quite a few tries to get this particular pizza joint to deliver a pizza that is just right.
First of all, the pizza usually comes out too greasy. My friends and I have solved this problem by requesting less cheese. This has significantly cut the greasiness and on some days, produce the best pizza ever. However, I have to give this place three stars because it really is hit or miss. On good days, the bacon on the Cable Car slice is crispy, the onions green and crunchy, and the chicken plentiful and yummy. We usually half and half that kind with the Aloha special, and North Beach does a good job being generous with fresh toppings. However, on bad days, the dough is too tough or stale, or the grease seeps through the cardboard box. Today was a good day, so everyone in the house was excited, which inspired this review.
Good luck in the future, North Beach in Excelsior! You will always be my last minute resort for junk food. -

My experience with using an online coupon here (this comment to R.A.) is that the pizza dough was fresh, the sauce was just as good, the toppings just as generous.
Someone complained about too much cheese. I actually order LIGHT cheese, meaning if you want less cheese, you ask them and they will accommodate, no problem.
Folks, if you want pizza and want to cut the calories, just ask for half the cheese they normally put. Guilt-free pizza. You're welcome.
What to do with the crusts the day after? Are you kidding? Put them in the toaster oven (not the microwave)* for a couple minutes, then smear butter on them. Too good.
*If you don't have a toaster oven, put it under the broiler or skewer it with a fork and hold it over an open flame if you have gas... your stove, dude.
The crust of a North Beach Pizza pizza is like sour dough. It's crusty on the outside and soft and doughy on the inside. So good.
No, New York people, it's not New York style pizza. It's San Francisco style pizza. Whaddya want?

Monica's family has eaten here a lot while in the city. It's very capable pizza and pasta, when you need it. I've been a few times now, and I've never had a wait, though we went on Friday evening and just missed a wait from the dinner rush. It doesn't have a ton of seating, so don't everyone go at once!
Compared to the other pseudo-Italian options I've been to nearby, it's better priced and has had better service, perhaps because it's a block (or two?) off Columbus. There's a coupon for it somewhere in the city yellow pages. Something like $4 off a second plate of pasta? Worthwhile enough that occasionally Monica's mother will check phone books at city telephones for it. -

They have a bouncer at the door at night. Plead your case to the Judge/Bouncer and he'll determine if you are worth enough to go in. If you aren't getting a table you allowed to enter tell them your order and then wait for your pizza on the street and you'll be called when it's ready. It's not the worse and it's not the best, but I do recommend the Golden Gate Pizza. The pizza has been doughy on occasion.
Pizza isn't amazing and the service is so/so. What do you expect from a pizza shop. The Golden Gate Small is around $17. I wonder if they put gold shavings on the pizza? It's also on the doughy side with the bottom not too crispy. Three Stars -

this is some of the BEST pizza i've EVER TASTED! I've only gone once, which is surprising as I live practically next door and they have the exhaust vent blowing onto the sidewalk so everytime I walk by I get a terribly delicious whiff of pizza which makes me want to run inside and gobble up 10 slices. I've had at least had 8 different people visit me and go "i don't know why, but I really want pizza all of a sudden!" the smell is just THAT tantalizing.
The people that work there are so friendly and nice, I wave to the guys making pizza in the window everyday as I pass by on the way home from work. I know they also have some regular italian fare in addition to the pizza, so you can get a salad or pasta instead if you're sitting inside rather than just picking up.
There is booth style seating available and the waitresses/waiters are definitely non nonsense but get the job done. -
Review from AJ F.
Sonoma, CA
Their Subs are good. Pizza is extremely overrated. Very greasy and the cheese is excessively piled on. The reason they get 1 star is thanks to their Subs.
The decor speaks for itself and I'm sure anyone who has visited in person understands why they do not post a Health Department grade to the public. Before the summer began, they clearly were doing something to the interior at their Grand and Union location. Booths and tables were on the sidewalk and the branch was closed down for at least a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, after the "cleaning," the interior was just as shabby as before - it appeared as nothing had changed! It has nothing to do with charm either. It just comes off as cheap and dirty.
Careful ordering online or by telephone. Often orders get misplaced and little remorse from the staff for orders that are outstanding for 2+ hours.
If in North Beach, look no further than Golden Boy Pizza around the corner. Much cheaper, much better and there is little to no attitude from the staff unlike North Beach Pizza. -

It was a cold sunday afternoon and it was the perfect day to lounge around at home, watch a couple of movies and order in pizza...and so we did. I was craving for North Beach Pizza and the closest one is this location. The pizza came in 30 minutes, which was impressive because they told it me it was going to take 45 minutes.
Anyway, it tasted like the pizza was under-baked and it was a bit soggy. The taste was good, but it was not hot when it arrived. It actually tasted a lot better when I reheated it in our toaster oven. -

The North Beach Special is forged by the dairy demons of Wisconsin state. The pepperoni, green pepper, sausage, mushrooms and onions add another taste dimension to this pie.
I wont eat it anymore, though, they really pack on the pounds.
