I've never eaten at this place, which has since closed down.  But it's always been a very noticeable building.  It's on a little triangle parcel of land off Lakeland Ave.  It's still that same noticeable building, although boarded up.  If you're into old buildings and landmarks, this might be just what  the doctor ordered.  I've seen better "old" buildings in my day, but the decor on this make up for the lack of mystery and deterioration one looks for in an abandoned building.  I'm giving it 3 stars for that.

The Normandie Inn is an old slate-roofed bulding, surrounded by some great looking trees, and has stood here since the 1920's. . . .  It was initially an actual inn, where one could eat and spend the night, and was a known speakeasy during prohibition.  Later it became a restaurant and was still open, up until a few years ago.  It had some provincial-type dishes and good stuffed shrimp.  Aside from the food, the place itself had an intrigue: The decor was furnished in the Gothic style, with stucco, heavy oak, arches, knights, shields and maybe some taxidermy.  It attracted the attentions of former Deep Purple/ Rainbow guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (who was known to hang around here) and Renaissance Faire types.  The Normandie Inn is also said to be haunted by a spirit, and it definitely added to the vibe; music, history and mystery,  but the building is now ransacked, gutted and run-down.  It looks like someone bit off more than they could chew with a restoration, and abandoned the project.  What a waste. . . it wouldn't surprise me if I drove by and noticed it was torn down one day.
