Review from Jaci H.
I lost my dental insurance recently, so I was worried that I would have to pay a ton to get descent care.
Clearly I was wrong. Norman Dental is a clean, modern dental office filled with caring professionals. I couldn't have been happier with my dentist who was thoughtful and thorough.
I had a cleaning, x-rays (which were digital - how cool is that!) and a check up. I only ended up spending $95 (due to the deal that have on Yelp - so definitely mention this when you book an appointment).
I'll definitely be back in 6 months for another cleaning. I trust Norman Dental with my teefs! -

I just came from a very upsetting visit here, which is so disappointing, because I had a really nice experience in the initial consultation. My first exam was great - I took x-rays and got an evaluation on some work that I needed done. This visit was to address a cavity.
I found the receptionist nice and efficient, and the dental technician very sweet. I felt comfortable with Dr. Polanski from our first visit, until he started the initial injection to make me numb. Having had quite a bit of dental work in the past, I usually expect a small pinch and some pressure (not a super fun time, but very tolerable). This injection felt entirely different: an extreme amount of pressure and intolerable pain, quite suddenly. I felt very taken aback and with the needle still in my mouth asked him to Please Stop, twice, before he removed the needle. I was literally in tears. I have never experienced so much pain so quickly!
Dr. Polanski asked if I wanted to continue, and I felt so upset because I was pretty worried about that extreme pain happening again from another injection. The technician brought me a tissue and some water, and let me collect myself for a moment. I explained to the dentist that I have never felt this kind of pain at an injection before, and he insisted that he'd never seen it and that he had no explanation for it. I asked if there was anything unusual about me in particular or my teeth, etc, and he insisted there was nothing wrong, and that he didn't know why it would feel that way. He asked again if I wanted to continue, and I had hoped that the initial shot would make subsequent shots less painful (because of numbness) and said hesitantly that I was OK to continue (regretfully). I held it together for the rest of the appointment, through some discomfort. I asked several times afterwards, what could possibly have caused this kind of pain? He insisted, again, that he didn't know, that there was no explanation, and apologized. I paid for my filling ($120) and left (without scheduling another one).
I felt so upset and spoke to my friend who is a dental surgeon. He explained quite rationally, that there are two possibilities: either the dentist accidentally injected into a nerve trunk (which can happen, every person's anatomy is different) or that he accidentally penetrated and injected under the periosteum, which is a tough covering of the bone. ("When this happens, the periosteum is separated from the surface of the bone and serious pain can result"). These are pretty reasonable and logical explanations, and I seriously wish that he had just explained this, and perhaps taken responsibility, rather than dismissing it. Accidents happen, we are only human. I just wish he had treated me with the courtesy of a real explanation.Comment from Dr. Dagmara S. of Norman Dental Center in Greenpoint 2/8/2012

I leave 3 stars because I assume the dentist wasn't so bad. I say "assume" because unfortunately, I didn't make it past the receptionist, who gave me a hard time about being 10 minutes late and then told me that I couldn't be seen unless I provided my social security number. With identity theft happening everywhere, I asked why my SSN would be required when I was paying in cash, and was informed that it was an ADA rule. Yeah, um, it's not. I've never given my SSN to a dentist in my adult life. I am so tired of dentists in general being a pain in the a** -- why can't I simply go to an office, pay a fair price, and get my teeth cleaned professionally, without pain, and without a lecture about flossing 8 times per day?

Where should I begin?
I think we are past that time when the dentist that we choose is just to make sure that our teeth don't fall out. It's all about the relationship. We open our mouth and just hope that they will do the best they can.
I have been a patient of theirs for about 3 months. They just didn't do it for me. There's no finesse in their work. But let's not even go there. My real problem was with their receptionist, a mixture of arrogance and ignorance. Poor service, whenever I asked her to help me out or answer any questions about their billing she was telling that she needs to get "prepared" and she is the only person there, so she's very "busy". I have a very low tolerance for these excuses. After all, you're getting paid for this.
All in all, this place has a poor record keeping, the appointments will be only made after insurance's pre-approval, if you want to use any means of plastic cards, there will be a 2.5% charge. The only good thing is the prices, they are ok, but then again there's a possibility you'll have to do it over again.
Be wise, and know what you're getting into.

I really don't like the dentist. Really. I have an irrational fear of choking to death while there and I never think the spaces are clean enough and I always feel like the people with the pretty, great teeth secretly mock me...
This is NOT the case at Norman Dental. After not going to the dentist for an amount of time that is so long that I am ashamed to admit, I finally made the decision to go. A quick search online showed a plethora of dentists offices in my neighborhood- but Norman Dental stood out mostly because they have fresh flowers in their office and their website shows their staff who all look friendly and not like mean dentists. Perhaps not the best reasons for choosing a dentist, but hey- whatever works right?
Anyhow, Dr. Amy Johnson was so great and nice and CLEAN and funny and sweet and really made me feel comfortable. She answered all of my questions, explained everything thoroughly and suggested treatments I needed without being pushy or condescending.
I really recommend this office and Dr. Johnson (even though she's a dentists)! :) -

I am a person who's afraid to go to the dentist.
It had been more than 5 years since my last appointment when I first visited Norman Dental. Well, I got a thorough, pain-free cleaning, a set of X-rays and a fluoride treatment. And the fear has subsided!
This practice is friendly and they use very modern equipment. My dentist was very patient and didn't lecture me at all, which is why I've recommended this place to several friends.
Go get your teeth checked out before COBRA runs out, guys. -

I cannot give this place 5 stars simply because they are dentists, and me no likey the dentist. However this place treated me with care!! I started slow, like any relationship, and went for just a check up and cleaning. I have some major work to be done and wanted to absolutely make sure I am in great hands. Dr. Polanski was super gentle and reassuring. I have to go back for some real work, but Im not as anxious about it as i was the last dentist I went to!! They are also affordable if you have no dental insurance, like myself.

No one likes going to the dentist, but Norman Dental Associates makes it as pleasant as can be. The dentist I used, Amy Johnson, is responsible, thorough, and very competent, and was able to fix all my dental problems with a warm smile on her face and relatively little pain. The staff is helpful and friendly. You can definitely expect to receive top dental care at Norman Dental Associates. I highly recommend them.
