mm congee, such a lovely comfort food.

i've had the seafood, beef, and pork/thousand yr egg congees. they were all good, but i probably would choose the seafood. they didn't skimp on quantity and size.

the bill was so reasonable too. oh but dont get xlb here.

omigod get the scallion pancake!

it doesn't look like your typical flat, thin scallion pancake.  it's like a crispy scallion dumpling of sorts!  full of fresh, beautiful, bright green SCALLIONS!

also get the bao zai fan w/ beef. delish.

1. meat ball congee
2. braised beef brisket/tendon noodle soup (h.k. style)
3. home made fish cuttlefish ball soup

the meat ball congee is a MUST have. the meat ball tasted fresh and is handmade and the congee texture is so smooth!!! wish they have this cooking quality in the area of boston...

Been meaning to try Noodle Village for a while.  Finally, after an awesome Yelp event, my 2 friends and I found ourselves at Noodle Village at 10pm.

It definitely exceeded my expectations.  The inside of the restaurant was spacious and clean, the waiter was very kind and courteous, and there were probably 20+ noodles dishes.

I like that you can order, thick, thin, egg, or udon.

I had the beef stomach with egg noodles.  It was really good.

The meal for 3 people and 4 dishes came out to about 26 bucks before tip.

Not bad at all.

I am a Chinese food snob and have been on a constant quest to discover the hidden treasures in Manhattan Chinatown.  I lived abroad in hong kong for some time so it has been extremely difficult to find food in the city that is up to par and authentic.

I can't give a review on the ENTIRE restaurant but I want to commend Noodle Village for their "shrimp dumpling noodle soup" (shui jao mien).  It's def. 4 stars and the closest to HK style that I have been able to find in NY.  The egg noodles are the correct texture and somewhat "al dente".  The shrimp dumplings ACTUALLY contain large pieces of fresh shrimp and are HUGE.  DELICIOSO.

One thing to note is they claim to not use MSG...however, I was somewhat thirsty afterwards. Also I would not recommend the "wonton noodle soup".  Something about the meat/shrimp filing is not right...regardless their shui jao mien is worth 4 stars!

Good authentic HK food @ a good price.

I came in here on a cold morning and ordered the egg noodles with sliced beef. I'm no big fan of egg noodles, but this really hit the spot. As a big fan of soup, I would give this place 5 stars...I'm pretty picky. I don't know how much msg or salt chinese food you guys consume with your Chinese, but the soup here seems to have a great flavor without too much of either.

There are alot of other chinese customers...coming in and out. The staff is really friendly and attentive. It's very clean- usually the bathrooms reflect how clean the restaurant is. I like it very much- cozy and very inexpensive for NY noodles.

I would definitely come back again.

I haven't raved about any place in Chinatown since... well, ever. So it brings me great joy and great pleasure to announce that THIS is my number one place for dumplings from now on!!!!!!!

I loved the stuffings inside the tri-color dumplings (no they're not really three different colors). I loved the pot stickers on a hot, sizzling pan. I loved my egg custard -- so eggy, so fresh.

Even though the service was slow, I still gave this place 5 stars. That's saying a lot for me.

I feel like whenever people give Asian food reviews they always have to prove their worthiness or food pedigree, ie. I lived in Hong Kong for 6 months, I am from San Jose, my best friend is Asian, I eat out a lot, etc. So here's mine. I'm half Chinese and I lived in Asia for 10 years. So there.

Noodle Village is pretty good. I went there with a dumpling lover friend so that's pretty much all we had.

Breakdown:

Soup dumplings = ehhh B at best. The skin was nice and tender and tasted fresh but they were sort of deflated.

Steamed pork dumplings = B+ These reminded me of the ones that my mom makes (and by that I mean the dining table assembly line that she forced me to help her with for hours on end as I grew up).

Shrimp dumping soup = A- These dumplings were stuffed to the brim and they had huge chunks of shrimp in them. Yum! The broth wasn't very flavorful but if you add a little hot sauce it'll do.

Chinese broccoli w/ housin = C I liked this dish, I mean, it's just steamed Chinese broccoli but it was a tiny portion and the amount of hoisin that came with was even tinier.

Overall I was happy with our food so I'll definitely give it a go again and try some other dishes.

The request for best soup dumplings continues...

I'm a big fan of chinese beef chow fun noodles.  This place seems to have not only the best chow fun noodles in NYC, but the best chow fun noodles in the US as far as I know.  Although the other dishes look good as well, I always end up geting the beef chow fun here cuz it's that good.  If you're an avid chow fun person like me, this is the place to go :)

I should probably give them at least one more star but me and my friend were just not feeling this spot! We wanted to get out of our usual food spots and try something different and happened to make it to Chinatown.

We walked into the place and noticed all asians so figured we were in the right spot. We ordered these pork dumplings that were fairly good but hideous to look at. He ordered some kind of shrimp dish and disliked it and I ordered a chicken cognee - gross.

To be fair, it is primarily due to our stupidity that we didn't like the place i am sure. My rice 'soup' was really thick with very little chicken in it and absolutley no taste at all.

Next time we're trying to experiment we will go to TGI Fridays instead of The Olive Garden!

My knowledge of Chinese food is severely lacking compared to other cuisines.  My childhood is filled with memories of General Tso's, egg foo young and egg drop soups.

However, i've slowly been educated on the wonders of crispy braised duck, congee, soup dumplings and other more authentic Chinese cuisine since i've moved to New York.  The common thread of a lot the places that i've eaten at are overly greasy and overly salty food.  It's a wonder how my Chinese cohorts stay so thin, with a seemingly steady diet of grease and starch and not a green veg in sight.

Compared to many of the Chinatown mainstays, Noodle Village is an oasis in a desert of grease and salt.  They pride themselves on less greasy, less salty and no MSG dishes, while preserving a degree of authenticity.  Not only are the dishes healthier, the atmosphere is less hectic, which is a big plus in my book.  While sitting at a table with random strangers, a normal Chinatown event, is novel; getting barked at by rude waiters is complete turn-off for me.  At Noodle Village, you get your own table, and the waiters are patient and accommodating.

Better service aside, the food delivers.  Hearty noodle dishes, tasty soup dumplings and chinese broccoli (with sauce on the side) are completely delicious and make for great hangover food.

I'll still visit Big Wongs, and i'll continue to patronize Golden Unicorn for Dim Sum, but Noodle Village has quickly become my favorite place for Chinatown eats.

I'm going to be generous w/ 2 stars here. Maybe I'm an idiot for ordering non-noodle dishes at a place with the word Noodle in it, but still that's no excuse for lackluster food. The noodle dish I tried was very passable and the congee looked good at the other table but I was very displeased. I'd give this another shot since it's all Chinese clientele and the congee looked good.

Ordered:
-Shanghai crab meat steamed buns ($6.95/6) - good
-Oxtail w/ curry ($6.95) - horrible, tasted like rubber, came w/ potato chunks and diced scallions, my chopstick bounced back when I poked into the meat and I'm not exaggerating, I left half this dish uneaten, there was also 1/4" of oil floating on top, served in casserole clay pot
-HK lo mein w/ minced pork ($5.75) - noodles were good, 2pcs of choy sum, i tried this
-Iced Tea w/ milk ($2.50) - looked like coffee, tasted like awful lipton, tons of ice

Total came out to $15 after everything

The noodle soups were good, I ordered the devilish ramen and it wasn't so spicy but it was brimming with seafood (the squid was tough, but the vast quantity of large shrimp, fish, scallop, fake crab, and fish balls made up for it) and topped with a blackened hard boiled egg. The shrimp dumplings were stuffed with real shrimp! They were a decent sized and not chopped into smithereens. I was thinking that this is where using small shrimp and chopping them up probably improves the taste, but seeing them was joyous as well.

The decor was nice and the service was good (for a Chinese restaurant).

Cash only.

I loved this place! I was super disappointed by Sweet N Tart since they changed up everything so I really wanted some good Chinese food and luckily my aunt brought us to Noodle Village!

We came here for lunch and it was so good we ended up coming back here ON THE SAME DAY for tea and snacks! That's how much we liked this place. Everything we got was good, not one dish disappointed. I would love to come back here next time I visit NYC. Cheap prices but great food. I also give a big thumbs up for any Chinese establishment that has clean toilets. No MSG either!

Everything we ordered:
Homemade Fish Cake Noodle Soup Chew Teo Style
Braised Beef Brisket/Tendon Lo Mein
Mixed Meat Congee
Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce
Homemade Pan Fried Gilantinous Rice Dumplings
Fried Pot Stickers

Later on for tea and snacks:
Mixed Tea & Coffee HK Style
Hot Soy Bean Drink
Tea in HK Style
Creamy Egg Custard
Double Boiled Egg
Scallion Pancake
Steam Crab Meat Soup Dumplings
Steam Shanghai Soup Dumplings

I was really excited to visit this place after all the "THIS IS JUST LIKE HK NOODLES" reviews and raves thrown my way.

But seriously?  I was disappointed.  The flavor of my Wonton and Fishball Noodles was lacking and the noodles were too hard.  Not talking al dente here.  On the plus side, the service was much better than most Chinatown places, and the management was friendly and attentive as well.

Nothing special, nothing terrible.

I should have ordered the noodles....in soup!  Instead I got this tender beef on a bed of noodles with a separate bowl of hot soup.  I get it.  Take the noodle and the beef and dip it in the soup.  "some assembly required."

My wife and sister inlaw got the noodles that I wanted so badly, plus the dumplings that came with their meal was pretty good.  Now my dish was good too, but wasn't as fun.  Still I rated my food as well as theirs and I felt it could have been  better.  Good, but not good enough for this cat.  Enjoy the misspellings on the menu.  Thats a surefire way that you're getting authentic food.  HA!

Some asian friends were visiting from Philly so we decided to try out Noodle Village. The dining area appears cleaner than the usual chinatown noodle joint. I had the duet lo mein, fish cake and wanton. We also ordered veggies, potstickers and onion pancake.

The onion pancake was interesting. It came in a sort of ring doughnut shape, not the usual flat pancake style.

The lo mein was a flat egg noodle, which was a pleasant surprise, and was cooked al dente. the wanton was tasty, with fresh chunks of shrimp and pork. loved that the fish cake had a somewhat crispy fried edges. fishballs were nothing to write home about. Mixing in some chilli oil into the noodles gave it a lot more flavor.

My friends and I left feeling pretty satisfied.

I don't think I can call it a genuine HK noodle shop. Everything was too clean.
I ordered the fish ball and fish cake noodle soup, and found it to be just ok. The fish ball and fish cake were both very fresh (made daily I think), but the broth and noodles were lacking. The noodles tasted like it wasn't soaked beforehand. Almost made the broth a little pasty.
I'd have to go back and try the congee next time. That looked a bit more appetizing.

This is a cantonese cusine restaurant.  I come here once a month, altho I used to come here weekly with friends for 2 months straight.

Below are what we always order:
1) Congee - aged eggs and pork
2) Rice carosole with sausage
3) Pan fried dumplings
4) Noodles from hell (not sure about the name now, but its got a "hell" in it.  spicy and tasty!)

The staff is nice and they speak decent english.

Finally got a chance to eat here after it opened on 1/6/08.

**Just a note: All their hk Lo Mein is "wonton noodle" style - it's the thin yellow like that usually come with wontons. Do not expect the thick lo mein

=) THE MEAT IS ULTRA FRESH - I had the Homemade Cuttlefish(No.7)Noodle Soup - and WOW it's FRESH - it was nice. The cuttlefish balls were tender and large.(def homemade) Came with four. ($4.75 small) **The Shrimp/Pork Wonton was paste-y, but all of it was edible meat.

X - THEIR WONTON LO MEIN(OR HK LO MEIN), you can get from the local supermarket. ***Being a "Noodle" Village - I expected their noodles to be really good - i'm not sure if it's 'homemade' or not, but it is kind of 'soapy'

X - VERY EXPENSIVE - especially when other stores like big wong, wing wong, have equally same amount of food(though the wontons here are little better) 4.75 for a "small" shrimp wonton noodle soup - 3.50 for the same at Noodletown. It just doesn't justify the expensive price. Maybe it's because I'm used to Chinatown having cheaper food, but I just don't think it's worth that much.

=) Good congee + GREAT fish FILLET - it was so tender and large.
The soup was very good, too. Definitely recommend.

X - They said no MSG but the soup is pretty much all MSG**though there are places worse**(you have to try Rai Rai Ken for the best MSG free soup ever! Rai Rai Ken is worth the 7 dollars a bowl)

=) Good customer service from the managers/head staff whom showed great patience with their customers. The regular staff wanted to rush our order(it was busy, tho)

Still haven't tried the deep fried fish skin yet! I've not seen this item anywhere in NYC.....(went on Jan 20th, but they said they ran out of Deep Fried Fish Skin)

I really wanted to give this place 4 stars, but the fact that the HK lo mein was supermarket quality, and the extremely high price. I highly recommend to try, but too much visits will drain your pockets.

the BEST chinese restaurant in the chinatown area. Probably one of the best in ny.
The restaurant focuses on congee and noodle. They dont use msg. Alot (maybe all) of the food they make from scratch and fresh. The noodles they order special from Montreal. This is honk kong style with some Chao Zhou (on the menu they spell it Chew Teo) style food as well. Chao Zhou style hong kong food? I think... Chao Zhou is the 'street style' food in HK coming from the people from ChaoZhou that immigrate to HK.
ok anyways... the food is amazing: all of it! Clean, focused, simple. as close to what you might get unless your mom or dad was from HK. so, for me, thats about as close as I'll get. Some of the dishes are better eaten in combo with a larger dinner... So if your eating alone, choose a dish that seems like a complete mean onto it's self. If in a group choose dishes that can be mixed well together.
What really got me was the HK style coffee/tea, a drink that is fairly common in chinatown, its a drink that mixes coffee and tea with cream and sugar. Its good, but I've never had it made except in a cheap simple fashion. Here they use high quality tea (coffee not sure, maybe instant?) and its really good. Quite a surprise.
the cliental is a really interesting mix of chinese that are a bit higher brow, and non-chinese who I'm not sure how they know about the place. I just found it randomly.
Price is great for what you get. Service is decent. Interior is straight forward clean chinese style, no surprises.
CASH ONLY

came here for some congee and it was GREAT. another big plus is that they don't use any MSG at all. no dry mouth afterwards! that alone got it a star

good service, clean place and they even take time to plate their food for presentation. I've been spoiled having growing up in the bay area so there aren't many chinese restaurants I like in NY, but add this to the short list!

Of most Chinese restaurants I normally never write a review because they're very much basically the same. But this one place made me feel compelled to come back twice on two different occasions - one for lunch and one for dinner.

At both times I ordered the same dishes twice to see if they were consistent. I ordered the beef tripe (Hong Kong Style) and steamed rice noodles. I've also tried the congee and that is also made well (that was another time though - not this instance)

What stands out is the quality is MSG free. Even though they omit one ingredient, they made up for it in the flavor of the food that you wouldn't even miss it. The tripe was made well because I didn't have to chew 100 times to get through it. It was tender enough and the fact that they offered different varieties of the version on one plate made me appreciate the plate more (given the price). What I enjoyed about my place setting is that chili oil was available in abundance and other hot sauces. Many Chinese restaurants are frugal on providing condiments. Another note worthy detail is the place setting. They definitely spent effort and money to provide quality plates, dishes, cups and even teapots. The steamed rice noodles are exactly what you would get on the street cart for $1.50 - but here it's about $3.95. But sometimes it's nice to sit down and eat it rather than eat it standing up outside with the wind and dust blowing.

The only problem I have is that the overall price was slightly higher than what I normally pay for each item. Unfortunately the days of tax free meals in Chinatown is on longer with regards to this place. My two items during this meal had cost me a whopping $11.38! I normally pay $6 for such a meal. But the service was pleasant and the atmosphere was pretty peaceful for a place in the heart of Chinatown on Mott Street.  On second thought, I should have reviewed my bill......hmmm

I plan to go several times in my life.

Hands down my FAVORITE noodle/ congee restaurant in Chinatown!!!! The food is very authentic and doesn't have MSG, which is a big plus to me. Prices are very cheap too. I like the decor of this place, it's a lot more peaceful and chill than most other restaurants in Chinatown. The best dish has to be the pork with black eggs and oysters congee!! I have to get it every time I go.

overall the place looked so new that it seemed like it was gonna be pricey... clean glass windows, all shiny wooden furniture and plates/cups.  but it was definitely chinatown!

broth wasn't msg cuz its 4 hours later and i'm not downing water like most places!  very pure, hint of fried shallots in there was nice!  went down very clean.

ordered the two type bowl combo of wontons and cuttle fish balls with two types of noodles, one with hand pulled, one with super thin.  still i was expecting sang kee (philly duck house) sized wontons and yes i realize that stuffing it with pork is the cheap way to go but man it was so good at sang kee that way! this place however is filled with shrimp so thats a plus!  the cuttle fish balls were really tender but lacked an umph! i wanted to dip it with hoisin or sumptin... my roommate liked the hand pulled noodle more ( i thought that was a lil on the harder side) i liked the super thin one (tasted more like the traditional egg noodles kind)

also ordered the pork hocks... i thought it was pretty tender but the sauce was not as sweet or strong as other places that emphasize a thicker sauce...

i think i will come back to try the other dishes... it seems promising... and all that came out to bout 12 bucks a head...

This placed was packed! We ended up getting seated 20 minutes later. The dishes were sub-par to other places I have tried. The food was either too bland or over seasoned.

I got the frog congee and the frog meat was very disappointing. The meat felt like it was from frozen and not fresh. If you spend 2 minutes chewing the same piece of frog and it just becomes like gum, you know its not fresh. There was an aroma in the meat that was not very pleasing. Our waitress was very hasty and had the meanest stare, set on KILL.

The noodle soup was good but when I get noodle soup, I expect more noodles then the number of hairs on Homer Simpson's head.

Brand new genuine Hong Kong noodle shop. The food is top notch and the chef hails straight from Hong Kong to prepare the food . The dumplings, wontons, fish balls are handmade and full of flavor. The jook or Congee (salty oatmeal/rice) is wonderful and reminds me of how my grandmother's home cooking in the mornings.  The place is newly renovated with lots of space, although it still gets crowded because the food is so fresh.  Don't pass up this place. Top authentic Chinese food in the city.

Fantastic addition to Chinatown.  I now go every other week or so...  love their wonton noodle soup, the "shrimp roe lo-mein", the soup dumplings, the rice pots, among many other.  Food is fresh, hot and fast.  The decor/seating is new and clean, which is a huge plus in my book.  (but not huge enough to skew the food rating!).  There's usually a short line over the weekends, but it does move quite fast, so no worries.  Oh, don't get the congee though - they tend to be quite bland and tasteless.

3.5 stars.  I think I need to do this restaraunt some justice.  All the previous reviews explaining that the broth lacks "oomph" is because this kitchen doesn't use MSG (as they highly promoted in all their ads and the front door).  So the broth flavor is "cleaner" and "lighter" than other places.  It's a clean place with nice comfy chairs, thus I think this premium is added to the higher prices (compared to other hole in the wall places in Chinatown).  The congee is smooth (not water down) and hot and the homemade fish balls are definitely freshly made, albeit a bit small.  The steamed rice roll (not listed on the menu) is also freshly made and came with a side of yummy, HK style sweet and sesame sauce.  The staffs are very friendly and willing to accomodate your dietary requests. They don't really have a dessert menu (except for sweet drinks and I think the ice-cream season is over for them), so that might disappoint the sweet tooth eaters.  Overall, good experience. A bit pricey for the neighborhood, but when I want to some friendly service and clean palate food, I'd return there.

I was surprised to find a new restaurant open up on Mott that was a Chinese restaurant so I had to check it out (most of the new spots in Chinatown seem to be Viet, Malay, or some kind of cafe/bakery). To me, this place was a rare chinatown find..clean, simple yet nice decor, cheap food, super nice and attentive staff (very hard to come by). I had the "hot pot rice" aka "bo jai fahn" ..the one with chicken & mushroom and another with various meats..I also had the cuttlefish balls soup. all in all, the food was just OK..had to add lots of soysauce to the hot pot rice, which wasn't too bad but it was sort of on the bland side. the cuttlefish balls soup had wayyy too much white pepper powder..I even smelled it while the waitress was bringing it over. The cuttlefish balls themselves were better, they seemed homemade? I won't be returning here again, since there are other better, cheaper chinatown spots (sadly, minus the great service but I'm willing to give that up).
