Review from Jade H.
Los Angeles, CA
Wow, just called to ask if they had a size 15/16 approach shoe. They didn't, so they knew the weren't going to get the sale, but Ryan went out of his way to do some research to tell me which brands carry that size and some other options.

I visited nomad this morning for bouldering beta. Not only did Andy give me some of the best beta he did it with enthusiasm and complete respect for the grades I requested. Thanks Andy! I sent a few problems. The store was also one of the best stocked shops I've ever been to outside Yosemite. The other staff members were also very friendly and engaging. I'll be back and recommend this shop without hesitation.

We bought my husband his 1st pair of Vibrams here. The only way to find a bigger selection of Vibrams is to drive all the way to Palm Springs, so this is THE PLACE if you are in/near 29 Palms (where my husband was stationed for training with the Marine Corps at the time). We were greeted & offered assistance right away. The employee who took care of us was very well-informed about Vibrams & helped us find a pair that was just right for the local terrain. They also had a healthy selection of Injinji (toe) socks, with everything at reasonable prices. Helpful service, informed employees & good prices - doesn't get any better! :)

Nomad was having a sale on socks, so I just loaded up on wool socks for the weekend.
Wool socks. The best thing since socks were invented.

Review from Tara H.
Unlike the REI's in the middle of Downtown City, USA you will find a staff of people who know their product, use their product and get instant feedback from those they sell their product to.
Located on Park Road (named for it's leading you to Joshua Tree National Park) this is a little store that stocks a variety of products. Most, if not all, the staff climb when they aren't working making it a joy to speak with them about the gear in the store and where in the Park you are headed.
Heed their advice, weary traveller. They know what they are talking about! -

Desert Hot Springs, CA
It's like Mecca for climbers. Back in the day I dropped about $5k here one visit for climbing gear. A small store located just outside the west entrance to the monument, it is jam packed with everything you need for technical climbing, hiking and camping.

I've been stopping by since 2000'.
I always check out the sales bin and always find something that I didn't really need but I totally want.
One of my friends forgot his rope when he flew in from New York. They totally hooked him up.
I've gotten most of my winter socks here during the summer when they are on sale.
Friendly staff. -

Pretty much everything you'd ever need to climb in Joshua Tree - trad gear, shoes, harnesses, bouldering pads, and clothing. Nomad puts REI and Adventure 16 to shame. They also have the best climbing shoe and climbing guide book selection I've ever seen - we were able to score a book for trad climbing in Taiwan for our next visit. This place is staffed by climbers who are knowledgeable and helpful - both about the gear and the climbing. There's also a smattering of camping equipment for all those staying out in Hidden Valley. Like Eddy S. said - usually full retail prices - but it's nice to support a local specialty store of this quality - I'm ok with the few extra bucks.

When it comes to certain things, I'm most assuredly jaded. I've been into climbing and backpacking and such outdoors things for years now. When I first started, REI was like a magically place, that required more self-control in myself to not spend all my money than my girlfriend needs in Forever 21. As the years have gone on though, I'm jaded - I don't go to REI unless I REALLY need something. In fact most stored of this ilk leave me un-impressed. That said...
No trip to Joshua Tree National Park for a day or for a week of rock climbing would be complete without a stop by Nomad Ventures. Located right at the corner of the turn off to the west entrance to the park, Nomad is not only a great climbing shop for the location, but one of the better climbing and outdoor shops I've been to anywhere is the country. While REI and Adventure 16 in the LA area are passable, they do not come close to Nomad as far as selection and quality of brands when it comes to climbing gear. They are wide selection of climbing hardware, and a wall full of ropes. They have good selection climbing shoes, but not so much as far as other shoes except for a few approach shoes. As for other stuff like clothes, they carry really good brands like Mountain Hardware, Pata-gucci, and pRana. They have a great selection of packs and some tents. Ok, so it is hit and miss, depending on what you are looking for. What really shines though is their book selection. Of course that have many copies of the various J-tree climbing guides, but they also have huge array of guide, not only from all over California, but all over the country and the world. We even found a guide for Long Dong crags in Taiwan, which we didn't even know existed. The staffs here is super helpful and friendly, even to beginners and non-climbers, and are climbers themselves so they are knowledgeable about the gear (as opposed to REI).
Hell, even if you only going to J-tree to look at the beautiful scenery, this is great place to get a souvenir. -

Did you forget your climbing shoes, rope, tent, etc. on your way out to Joshua Tree? Well you can probably find a replacement here. Great store with great knowledgeable staff. I went in to browse and did not think I needed anything. Just kidding. They had an English language guide to climbing via ferrata routes in the Dolomites, which I will be climbing this summer. Who knew?

Mojave Desert, CA
Walked through the door only to be blown off in favor of the
yuppies coming in behind me. No courtesy greeting, nothing.
Was disgusted, and walked out. Been in before to stagger at the
high prices and was disgusted then. Caters to mostly tourists, as
the locals won't hardly deal with the place. As a local, I tried to give it
a last chance to support my community. Never again. Good luck. -

Yeah, they are a climbing specialty store but they also have all the gear you'll need for regular hiking as well. Also chances are you've come to JT unprepared for either how hot or how cold it is. Either way Nomad's got you covered. The staff here are really super friendly and helpful. It's clear they love working here and love JT.

Review from Walter M.
Talk about filling a need. What would Joshua Tree be without the park. It's located pretty much right on the main road on the turnout to the park so anyone who is not stocked or needs something comes here, except for maybe food/water and firewood. They have technical clothing, equipment for hiking, climbing, camping, training, etc. Most of the staff climbs or climbs for a living while working there on the side. It's a great community up there where people spent long period in the park and come down to refuel, relax and communicate with the outside world as the park is off the grid. Check out the shoe sales and gear they have everything for rock climbers and camping as those are the 2 biggest draws for extended time in the park. This is the main store and the largest, they do transfers regularly and are priced the same as the other locations. Again staff is super knowledgeable, but maybe not as friendly as they are itching to fix their climbing needs all the time. They stock some items that I wouldn't necessarily think people would need out there, but hey you can never been too prepared. They are the only outdoor retailer for the entire valley so check it out unless you don't care about quality then go to Walmart and buy Coleman gear.
