Nolita House, my new neighborhood gem! I've been three times in the past month and each time, I've discovered a new and even more delicious dish than the last... with the exception of the spinach artichoke dip, which I had on my first visit. This will be a hard dish to dethrone from the top seat!
If you're feeling slightly healthy/cheap, go for the tacos a la carte - $2 each during happy hour. If you're in the mood to indulge, hit up the mac 'n' cheese - either the three cheese or the lobster. Empty calories and complex carbs never tasted so good!
Interesting how I've been by this area dozens of times but have never noticed Nolita House.
I got here about 6:15 on a Friday night, hoping to experience the mac and cheese goodness that I had read about on Yelp and avoid the crowds that I had read could jam up the place.
When you walk into the restaurant and see all the empty tables, you think, Why were people complaining about its being so crowded? Then people start sitting at the tables, and you realize how tightly together they are placed. I would not want to be in a fire at Nolita House. No, sirree, Bob.
I was seated immediately and given very attentive service by my waitress. I asked if I could have the Popeye mac without bacon but with broccoli instead, and she said that would be fine. I also ordered a side of grilled vegetables.
Busboys bring out tiny potato chips that sit in a metal boat as table munchies. The chips are kind of fun, though I would have preferred something nonfried and nongreasy. Still, maybe they set the tone for what to expect from the menu in general--pub food?
The place was nearly empty (though the bar area was full) when I sat down, but it filled up fairly quickly, and then I was pinned in on three sides. The only way I could get up from my table was to squeeze between it and the wall. (This was also the only way the waitress and a busboy could get to my table, the table in front of me, and the table behind me to my left. Fortunately, they didn't need to visit the table behind me too often.) Really, for the ease of moving around, Nolita House should clear out about 10 or 15 tables, but that would reduce the seating capacity by some ungodly high percentage.
The waitress paid close attention to my Diet Coke drainage and refilled my glass each time I asked. Busboys in general seemed to be at the ready with pitchers of ice water for my table and surrounding tables.
Ambiance? Eh. The music was kind of loud, but what was louder was the din of the people at the bar and then, as the place filled up, in the restaurant. It's kind of a loud place; it's not really the kind of place I would recommend going to for a quiet date. The lights, though dim, were bright enough to read by till someone dimmed them even more while I was reading.
I did manage to squeeze out and go to the bathroom and found it clean, which was reassuring.
The mac and cheese was impressive. The crock it comes in is deceptively deep; at first I thought I would be able to wolf the portion down in no time, but then I realized how much food was actually there. I liked the idea that I was getting my greens with broccoli and spinach to go with the artichoke hearts and the breadcrumbs that sat atop the gooey concoction. The pasta looked like the small, twisty kind; not sure what the name for it is. That was kind of intriguing; I don't believe I had ever had mac and cheese with that kind of pasta, though I don't think the type of pasta matters. The dish took a while to get through, but it was rewarding.
The grilled vegetables was five or six large circular slices of summer squash and zucchini, presented overlapping each other, kind of like the Olympic rings symbol.
The tab was reasonable: $12 for the mac, $6 for three Diet Cokes and $6 for the veggies. If I were to go back, I would probably skip the veggies, as I get them in the mac, so figure $18 for a complete meal. It's very hard to complain about pricing like that.
Would I go back? Well, I admit it's nice to know of a good, affordable mac-and-cheese place in a 'hood I'm often near if not in, but, boy, Nolita is small, and I'm only one person. I'm not claustrophobic, but I hate feeling wedged in on all sides, and I get the feeling that would be the case no matter on which night or at which time I ended up going. I mean, I went early because I wanted to avoid the crowds--and I still got pinned in. I'll probably give it another try and report back on the seating situation.
Nolita House gets a solid four stars from me and I didn't even have the food! I just popped inside on a bustling Monday night during Game 5 of the World Series, snagged a row of seats right in front of the bar, across from the giant flat-screen showing the game, and proceeded to enjoy ice-cold $6 beers served to me and my friends by a wonderfully nice waitress in an over-sized Paul O'Neill jersey.
Decently priced beers + baseball love + flat Screens = Monday night happiness.
I enjoyed the atmosphere since I went there alone. The loudness didn't bother me because of this factor. It seemed like a place where the people who work there come on their days off to hang out and drink (which can be both good and bad).
When I arrived, the man who checks IDs had a mouthful of chili soup, which I took jokingly, but in essence, it was kindof off-putting because he was talking with his mouth full. At least he covered it with his hand.
Anyways, the hostess was nice and when I asked for a recommendation in the mac and cheeses, she quickly responded with the Popeye, which has bacon and spinach. I ordered that. It was tasty, but heavy and filling.
It's a small place with a bar counter which has two flat screen TVs and then on the other side of the bar, they were projecting the Yankee game (world series) on the wall. They eventually had to put the projector away to create table space as more ppl came in to dine.
Overall, I would recommend it, IF you wanted to watch a sports game, drink a beer, and munch on some bar food. As for a date or planning to chat with your friends, not so much...unless you don't want to hear what the other person is saying.
Went for Sunday brunch and everything was fantastic. They have live bluegrass music on Saturdays and Sundays and it was so delightful to hear cheery banjo music. Our group of four got there at almost 1 pm and the wait was one hour. Long time to wait, but definitely worth it. To kill time, we walked down the street to Aroma for yummy capuccinos, then went back to Nolita House where we were seated right next to the band. Kinda loud, but we didn't mind.
I had the hangar steak and eggs benedict, which was delicious. It came with hollandaise sauce, salad and crispy fries.
My friends -- all vegetarians -- were thrilled with the options and got a pizza thing with an egg on top. We shared the cheese grits, which were totally awesome, as well as the baked mac and cheese. \
Totally fun place and great to take out of towners. Feels homey and laid back and very nice staff.
Oh yeah, free mimosa with brunch!!
My girl friends and i went there on the advice of some friends!! What a Good time... great place to get drunk and wild!! load music, fun people.
good looking guys. drink were STRONG!!
oh man oh man oh man!
How I do love me them southern things.
Nolita House caters to my brunch needs:
1.They take Reservations! (I hate you Prune..)
2. Blue Grass music on Sunday @ 1!
3.BISCUITS AND GRAVEY! which have usurped my every dying, ever needing love for eggs benidict. oh oh oh oh my!!
Its a little bit $$$ (12 dollars for them B n' G's), but well worth the price.
On Valentine's day my fiancé and I had booked ourselves into a 'Boozy Bluegrass Brunch' at Nolita House in the East Village. It's a brunch where you get a cocktail for free with your food, and live bluegrass music plays unobtrusively while you eat. It was such fun to have a real "brunch", and while I sipped a Sangria and he a Mimosa, we filled up on eggs florentin and herb fries.
This place was so awesome we went back again a few days later when we couldn't decide where to go for lunch. The lunch was just as fantastic and we had a nice chat with the owners of the place who are awesome! I love the fact they have constant theme parties - if I was a NY resident this place would be my second home!
Also - drinks are really cheap (and strong!) and food is good value too.
Want delish food and stiff drinks? Look no further. Wine or beer + abundant cheese selection, spinach artichoke dip and farmers pizza = happy hour heaven.
Won't break the bank.
If only I can make it to brunch...
Fantastic $2 taco special, mediocre lobster mac.
The service left a bit to be desired, but it wasn't bad. The drink specials were damn good.
Met up with some friends here Friday night for drinks and dinner. We were hoping to catch the last hour of happy hour which was advertised on their site as ending at 8pm, unfortunately, when we got there we found out they changed it to ending at 7pm. It was explained to us they move up happy hour by an hour after summer once it starts getting darker earlier. They just hadn't updated the info on their site. But that was the only downside of our time there. The staff is very attentive and friendly. And the drinks are GUR-REAT (in my Tony the Tiger voice). I had the Blue Corn Crusted Salmon as my entree, which was a party in my mouth. I tasted the shrimp tacos my friend ordered, which were good, but didn't look filling. I was happy with my dish.
They're pretty consistent with their food and service, so I have to put them on my list of fave spots in the city. I haven't tried their brunch yet, but something tells me it's in my near future.
Great service and great food. Our waitress was not only on top of what we needed, but she was actually fun, too! The atmosphere of the place was really great, though it was a bit warm (maybe that was the wine). I had the penne of mulberry - pasta, garlic, parm and sausage - a perfect storm of deliciousness. My friend got the sampler of mac & cheeses. I would have tasted it, but she wouldn't share!!!! So, I guess that's a rave review for the mac & cheese, too.
Great place. I'll be back. Maybe for brunch next time...
Love the brunch.
Love dinners.
How many times can I say love? :)
My very first review on yelp goes out to Nolita House!
Me and my three girlfriends made a date for dinner on a fabulous Tuesday night and who would've thought that our night could've gotten even more fabulous! As we sat down half an hour before the 2 for 1 draft specials were ending, we made sure we took advantage of their happy hour deal. Each of us as 4 beers, for 12 dollars (what a deal!) with a side of their slammin' mac and cheese spring rolls.
As an entree, I ordered the stuffed chicken breast with spinach on a bed of rice and asparagus. Absolutely delicious! All my girlfriends were very satisfied with their meal as well (they ordered the shrimp and summer tacos, popeyes mac and cheese)
The staff is also very attentive and patient :)
Loves it!
How can anyone say no to the Boozy Bluegrass Brunch at Nolita House? I mean, boozy + bluegrass is already awesome, but then you add in brunch? Let's go! Of course the bluegrass portion didn't arrive until about 45 minutes after scheduled but if you've read my reviews you know I tend to be uncomfortably early for musical events. When will I learn? I was already into the other 2/3rds of this triple threat, so I was pretty content, if not tipsy before the food came.
All three of us girls ordered the baked french toast, which is a lot like a bread pudding with a vanilla bourbon glaze and topped with fresh berries. It was delicious but I almost went with an egg option since they looked amazing and I am usually a savory breakfast eater. My complimentary mimosa was the perfect proportion of OJ and champagne. Great place to spend a lazy Saturday morning/afternoon, or whatever time you attribute to be brunch. This place is open until 4am on the weekends, so by their standards I am sure our 10:30a arrival was early.
Nolita House looks like a great place for live music, half price drinks and a new twist on home cooked favorites. Certainly a place I will try and make it to again in NYC.
Went here on saturday night, table for 6, reservation was graciously held and we were seated without our full party present. We went here based on a recommendation and to be honest, i'm not sure why this place got so many high ratings. it's subpar food with above avg prices. Not sure how to rationalize it. I got a beer, and the steakhouse burger (which was tiny), and somehow had a $40 hole in my pocket. Granted bud lights were $5. We all split one dessert which was $10. I dunno, the burger was good but it wasn't $15 good, even if it had prosciutto instead of bacon on it. the pizza wasn't a $16 pizza even if it had truffle oil and arugula thrown on top. Maybe my appetite is too large, maybe i was just hungry, but there are much better places in the city, and much better places in the neighborhood. It was great company, but i think it was the wrong location.
Came in for the much touted bluegrass brunch and it was fantastic, hit the spot for a glorious sunday afternoon. Had the brunch plate with poached eggs and they were even thoughtful enough to put some hollandaise sauce on the side for dipping! Sweet. The band was very good, nothing like having some cheerful, bouncy bluegrass in casual pub setting. Having a free drink with your entree sure helps too!
Service was friendly but it did take us sometime to get our food.
This place is awesome! One of my go to spots at any time of the day! Personal favorites include 2 for 1 drafts and taco Thursdays, and the baked eggs, green eggs and ham or French toast (brick as I like to think of it).
Also personal shout out to John Malaya. One of my favorite servers there!
Decent food but not the best. Place is dark and cramped. Lobster mac and cheese had only traces of lobster!
I've heard good things about their brunch, but as a bar, I would avoid it at all costs. It's way too loud, it smells bad - like dirty hair - and the crowd looks the way it smells LOL. The couches look dirty too - it was all just a bit of a unhygenic-overload for me. I promise I'm not an asshole, it was just really bad. I have to come back and try the food though, hopefully that's prepared in more sanitary conditions
I seriously considered keeping this place a brunch secret per instructions from Anuja, but I feel I have to give Nolita House some love, even if it makes the wait longer on the weekend.
To borrow from Arrested Development, I'm having a love affair with their breakfast pizza. It combines everything wonderful about breakfast - eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes - into a delicious and very generous pizza. Don't forget that a complimentary mimosa/bloody mary/juice/soda is thrown in as well all for only $12. My recommendation is to go with a bacon-loving pal and split this amazing breakfast pizza and a mac & cheese side. You'll be happy all day long!
(You can make brunch reservations only for groups 6 and larger, but the wait isn't bad if it's just 2 of you)
Nolita House has one of the best happy hours in the area. It's not over priced like a lot of other places in the area. Beers are BOGO and well drinks are $5. It's the perfect place to stop in after work with co-workers or to grab lunch on a slow day.
Happy Hour drinks are $5. The specialty drinks are $12, but large! The Mac & Cheese my friend and I tried was orgasmic, and the burger was wonderful. Topped off with an Apple Cobbler that I couldn't finish .... UNFORTUNATELY.
Add to this our fabulous waitress, Dolores, a bill that, with drinks (several) still didn't break the bank, and a really comfy, homey vibe, and you've got a recipe for a bar/restaurant that should stick around for a long time to come!
Hi Nolita House. I came to visit you on a recommendation from a friend. The Bluegrass Brunch was very festive, and my waitress was friendly and on top of things. But that stuff you're calling "Baked French Toast?" Most people call that BREAD PUDDING. Seeing as how I came all the way in from Astoria to eat french toast, it was a disappointment. So, just rename it on the menu and you're forgiven.
I finally tried the bluegrass brunch today and the brunch menu is hands down 10 times better than the regular menu. With dishes like green eggs and ham, 5 different types of eggs benedicts, croque monsieur/madame, AND their usual pizza options it took us a few minutes to make our final choices. After much discussion, I ordered the Norwegian benedict and my friend got the Mediterranean baked eggs. All the dishes came with a complimentary glass of mimosa, sangria, juice, or soda.
Although the live music didn't start till noon, I didn't really mind because it became hard to hear each other once the live music started. The conversation volume went up a few notches each time the band was playing.

I come here for lunches and dinners, but I haven't been to a bluegrass brunch yet. The place is… Read more »
The waitress/hostess they had today was pretty useless. When we showed up, she told us a 20 min wait. We checked back with her 10 mins later and she told us the wait was 30 mins. The same girl served as our waitress. I asked for egg whites only (I have high cholesterol for gosh sakes!). I got eggs with two runny yolks. I didn't want to make my friends wait any longer than they already had, so I just sucked it up and ate the dish as is. I told the waitress about the mistake afterward. She apologized and that was it. I think the right thing to do would have been to comp the meal. You screwed it up, you shouldn't make me pay for it.
That being said, moving on to the food itself. The Mediterranean baked eggs was meh. Too much ratatouille. The Croque Madame was much better. The crispy melted cheese was good. The portions are too large though. Share with a friend? I am skeptical as to whether the fries are actually fresh cut. The juice is not fresh squeezed.
Bluegrass brunch is AMAZEBALLS! I was in the mood for breakfast, but couldn't resist the mac & cheese. They make a pretty great sangria. I had to have 2 (well, I didn't HAVE to but I did). They didn't skimp on the bacon at all. There were huge chunks placed throughout the skillet.
My boyfriend ordered the spinach, goat cheese and portobello omelette which was huge! The highlight of his meal was the herbed french fries.
We left satisfied and drunk!
We had a very good time at Nolita House...why only 3 stars then? The shifty service...thats why.
We made reservations for 10:30PM on a Saturday night for a group of 6. We arrived and were promptly seated. We got a cute booth right off the entrance and we all fit there comfortably. Immediately after being seated we had 2 guys circling around getting silverware, glasses, water, napkins, etc. I assumed that meant service would continue like this all night long. Wrong!
It took a good 10 minutes before anyone came over to take our drink order. After that, it took another 15 minutes for the drinks to arrive...however, our waiter didn't even come grab our order until the drinks arrived. After we finally ordered it took another 15-20 minutes before our apps arrived, and then another 20 minutes for our food to arrive. I don't know much about how things work in a restaurant but that sounds a little too long. To add...we were the only table ordering anything as it was already late and the other tables had already received their food.
Now on to the positives:
The place had a great atmosphere and is actually a good place to come to for an after dinner drink as well.
All the food that we got was super yummy...we ordered plain mac n cheese, the lobster and truffle oil mac n cheese (YUM! and with real lobster pieces), the cheeseburger, the bbq burger (both burgers were HUGE and tasty...the fries are the skinny trendy fries that burn too quickly when fried so they are not too good), Greek salad, a pizza, and the ny strip (cooked to perfection!). So we pretty much tried everything on the menu and everyone was really satisfied.
I thought the drinks were too pricey but hey the food was awesome and we had a great time so I will most likely come back...but I'll be hoping for another waiter.
good food n' decent prices, great bartender n' attentive staff, the atmosphere is playful n' the crowd as well as the bartenders can spontaneously dance n' sing along to the music, some patrons on the bar n' some behind the bar all dancing n' putting on a show (all the while when some couple in the back are passionately smooching eachother)
I agree with Jean H. 4.24.09, the music is played off an ipod but with remarkable good sound, the theme was supposed to be an 80's night but the guy kept on switching between today's top 40 n' the 80's (n' switching midtrack completely oblivious that he's not alone here) but still was quite enjoyable.
service was mediocre...
the food was really good though.
LOVED the lobster mac & cheese and stuffed chicken breast.
will definitely go back when i'm in the city!
I just adore boozy bluegrass brunch!
This is my favorite place to get Sunday brunch when I'm in New York. It's warm and inviting, the coffee is amazing, and the eggs benedict are cooked extremely well. The free mimosa and live music sealed the deal.
I ordered: the Biscuits and Gravy platter with eggs, a Side of Bacon and a Bowl of Macaroni and Cheese with Cheery Tomatoes.
Preggers Deepa ordered: An omelet
One could say that I eat too much when I'm eating less than the pregnant lady, but we'll just say Deepz is anorexic and call it a day. (Shame on you Deepa! There's a LIFE inside you!)
I don't know why I would ever order Biscuits and Gravy. Limp biscuits with white gravy? Wait, make that white SAUSAGE gravy? BLECH! Let's just say something deep, deeply gay inside me makes me order this every few years or so.
Nolita House's version of it was pretty good, I'm not gurna lie. I ate almost all of it. I was going to finish it, but I started to feel a bit queasy. Whether this is because I had just eaten the equivalent of about four meals, or if this is because the soggy biscuit/gravy/sausage combo was making me ill is debatable. Their Mac N' Cheese was fabulous. Soft noodles, creamy cheese, they'll throw whatever you want in there for you (tomatoes, bacon, peas, LSD, ya' know, whatever). The portions were large (including the bacon which they made perfectly crispy and was about eight slices of bacon, not your standard four) and the staff was pleasant. Good job!
To top it all off, when I received my bill I said "That's it?". How often does one say that in New York? Especially when the bill is for one woman who's eating for two and a dude who generally eats for six?
Since there are five bajillion restaurants in New York, and since I'm only in the city an average of two days a week, I rarely go back to the same one, but perhaps one of these days I'll trip on back over to Nolita House.
I was a little sketched when I got out the cab. E. Houston on a cloudy cold snowy day in January is not extremely inviting. Luckily, Nolita House was.
The minute I walked in, I was warmly greeted and invited to sit at the bar to wait for my (extremely handsome) date. I ordered an OJ, but the bartender asked if he could experiment with me a bit, and I was game. He made this melon, grenadine, mint, concoction that was actually quite good.
When Daniel showed up at 12, the place was still half empty but filling up fast. Service was friendly and fairly quick. The menu was almost too much to handle. Eggs, biscuits, sandwiches, you name it. We ended up going with an omelette, a gravy, egg, biscuit monstrosity, bacon and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was probably the hit of the morning, but the buttery, hot biscuits came in a very close second.
By the time we left about 1:30, the place was hopping, but there was no line. The tight quarters makes not ideal for larger groups, but great for couples and groups of 3 or 4.
This place is great for brunch, and if I lived in the city, I would be back for dinner. The staff was extremely friendly the vibe was energetic and, most importantly, the food was extremely satisfying.
I've been here a couple of times for the blue grass brunch. Although this place comes recommended, I have to say it's just mediocre. I've had the breakfast pizza that was bland. I've also had the eggs, biscuits, and gravy that was just okay but not nearly as good as five points, great jones, or little giant. The mac and cheese recommended by the waitress was also average.
The bluegrass is cool and the staff is accommodating, but their brunch is just okay. I'll go back to try dinner.
We went here for Brunch yesterday, and it was def a good time. It was a lil hot inside, but I guess 93 degrees in April takes some getting used to.
I ordered the brunch plate which was 2 eggs, toast, bacon, fries, and salad...It was good, pretty simple, but good...The fries were good too..The portion size here is great, especially for the prices...very cheap..so while some other places have 2 or 3 drinks included, I didn't really complain about only one being included..
The other people in my party ordered the breakfast pizza, and they loved it. I dunno, for some reason, i found it to be kind of disturbing...
All in all, it was def a good brunch place..I would consider going back..but id probably rather try some others or revisit some old favorites before returning
Bluegrass Brunch. That alone is worth five stars. Bruch is served while various bluegrass bands play live. Great music.
Brick oven eggs are the bomb. Eggs, spinach, ham and cheese in a deep dish pan, cooked in a brick oven. Awesome. The French toast was insanely good with maple syrup.
Brian, the bartender, takes pride in his work and it shows. The bloody Mary is the best ever. He's got some secret ingredients that make it kick. He's also the coolest bartender in the area.
Fantastic brunch w/lots of options.
The mac and cheese and the french toast are just delectable. We ordered them both for the table to share in addition to getting our own entrees to remedy some stiff hangovers. The cheap mimosas didn't hurt either, and the music made for a great atmosphere.
Highly recommend it for brunch. May be my favorite in town.
I've been here several times for Happy Hour and dinner; generally the wait is short (10 minutes or less). The service is okay.
First of all, Happy Hour 2 for 1- good times! Secondly, the burger with bleu cheese is one of the best burgers in NYC that I've eaten. The mac'n'cheese (all the varieties) are really tasty, and the smaller portion is the perfect size for me. The pizzas are very tasty too. They have a nice selection of beers and artisan cheeses.
This is a bar and can get loud inside when its busy, but for the most part, its not too loud to disrupt a good night with friends.
I heard this place was great... and then I ordered delivery and was supremely disapointed.
I was in the mood for mac and cheese and this version of mac and cheese must have been old or just bad by time I got it?
Delivery took a long time (for an off peak night at 7pm?) and I wasn't too happy with what I did recieve.
Wouldn't really reccomend for eating but for boozing, OK I'll go back and give it a try.
Just when we thought we knew every place in our neighborhood, we find this gem. Sunday afternoon Bluegrass brunch was fun, the wait was reasonable and the staff was friendly and attentive. The food was hearty and exactly what you thought you ordered, if not immensely ambitious. But this is a place for comfort food and relaxing, not over-wrought gastronomy.
We will definitely be going back here on a regular basis.
