Such a great little neighborhood jewel.
Buy lots of stuff here for pupper and kitty bones.
Might be a little expensive, but so much better than Petco or PetSmart.
... can you say, "Judgmental?"
For the last year I've been driving by this little corner store and mentally making it a "to-do stop and shop" since I constantly drive through the Noe Valley. But when I finally was able to stop by during business hours with my little mutt, it seemed like the minute that I walked in the store the employees made it apparent that they were soon going to soon close the shop... must I add, without saying a word.
The walking space is a bit tight and because of that, there are tons of treats & toys scattered throughout the whole store. It almost feels like you're going through a maze just to find a dog toy. When I finally spotted the dog toys in the far corner of the store, I simply said out loud, "Aha! there it is!" to my boyfriend who was slowly trailing behind me. When the employee heard me say that, she gave me a stern look and asked if I was looking for something, as if I was being rude in trying to get her attention (but by no means was that my intention). I politely said, "No thank you, I think I've found what I was looking for." She then quickly turned away and walked to the cash register. After that, it was a bit of an odd silence throughout the store so I proceeded to walk towards the door. I noticed her trying to hurry me out of the store by the use of the "stink eye," then something caught me eye, DOG SWEATERS! Sadly, each sweater was somewhat close to $70 and although the designs were pretty flattering, I just thought to myself that it would be better if I knitted Max a sweater for about $7.
I'm pretty sure that there are other pet stores that are tons of nicer than Noe Valley Pet Co. & just because I'm not a regular does not mean I should be treated no less.
I'm all about supporting the local neighborhood stores.
They have a good selection of premium dog food, including the brand that Sophia eats -- Innova Evo. Major pet-stores never seem to carry her brand of food. For this fact alone, I'm happy for this neighborhood pet-haven. They also have a good selection of healthy treats and chews. It's a boutique pet-store; naturally, certain items are going to be more expensive than your average pet-store. Convenience is an important factor for me; I often stop by and pick up goodies for Sophia on our way home from the dog-park.
As for the comments about customer service, I've never encountered any problems with the staff. They've always been extremely helpful and friendly.
We came in for some dog basics for our new puppy. The staff was very attentive to us and very kind to our dog. They were very informed about the different products we were looking for and answered all the questions we had. The store was well laid out - good merchandising, relatively spacious for the size of the store. And the products were all of high quality.
We ended up walking away with a very nice dog bed, a wool sweater, a collar and some toys. After spending a long time poking around on the web but finding mostly petmart quality junk it was relieving to go into a local store that was so well staffed with such good stock.
We will return soon.
Eh, I went here on a recommendation on where to buy my pup a cute collar. And, I was in the hood headed home. Walked in. It was a small place and the guy at the counter was NOT friendly at all. NO HELLO, NO "can I help you", NO NOTHING! That's really annoying!
I did however, find my boy a very cute collar. A bit over priced, IMO.
Will I be back?
Nope, there are better pet stores in San Francisco where the prices are in line with the products and quality they carry and where the staff is friendly.
Too bad that the staff is rude and the prices (way too) expensive, cause the store itself is beautiful and they have a neat selection of pet goodies..... Maybe it just shows how the neighborhood is changing. There are so many other FRIENDLY and REASONABLE owner owned pet supplies store in the city, that I would highly NOT reccommend Noe Valley Pet Company.
UPDATE: I admit that since this store is close to my "hood", I still stop there more than I should to get my pet's food. The people have become nicer (hence the 2 stars instead of one), except for one of the owners who is still very rude, short, and seems bothered if you ask her to special order food or if she can stamp ur "frequent buyers card"....... she needs to lose the tude and get wit the time, jesbus :(

Paws Up!
My first non-restaurant review. Hey, I guess I should comment on where my dog gets his food too.
Place. Love the corner, light-filled location, stocked with a great variety of goods and treats for your pet. Yes, parking can be a pain sometimes, but I still do go there to get my 30 lbs of Nutro kibble for my lab.
Products. Food price is definitely reasonable (and there is a frequent buyer card that gives you $10 off non-food goods after each $100 premium food purchase). Lots of nice accessories, toys, beds, etc. True, doggie bling can be expensive, but I do like to support neighborhood stores, so if I can splurge on myself once in awhile, my pooch also deserves a nice collar or leash -- as if he really cares! -- so it's just another treat for me that my dog looks cool.
Service. Generally, the staff is super nice; they let you linger; they give you treats for your dog, etc. The owners are supportive of the community, and that counts a lot too.
I adore this little store, and so does Willow! They are so very nice and friendly to us when we go in, and the young girl that works there is always armed with 'treats' for my pup! It's on the way to work so when I have a few extra minutes, we stop here to check out the new homemade treats that they sell...Willow loves the Polka Dot Peanut Butter treats!
They are fairly reasonably priced and they have alot of really cute stuff for dogs. If I lived in the city, I'd probably make this a regular shopping spot.
Great selection of toys, bad sales staff that ignored me and seemed annoyed that I interrupted their conversation to ask them a question.
Why do the little dogs get all the love? Why the overwhelming need to accessorize an accessory (because, let's admit it, that's what they've become --- living fur accessories)?
Furthermore, why are 95% of the accessories sized for big dogs reminiscent of something out of an Eddie Bauer catalog? Ok, I know that ORIGINALLY my dog was bred to be a "hunting dog," but I come from farming stock and you don't see me running around in overalls and a flannel shirt. Baboo is city dog all the way and her accessories should reflect that.
Enter Noe Valley Pet Company. While it's a small store with a boutique flavor, they have a fabulous array of collars with which even a Hollywood starlet would be happy to trim her yappy little fur ball --- but they're made for big dogs! How about something pink with daisies? Or shiny black leather with silver stars? Maybe a little sassy plaid action? Or the oh-so-trendy leopard print? All with leashes to match!
There's also a nice assortment of big dog toys, chew bones the size of my arm, 30 lb. bags of food, and, ahem, dog sweaters. I'm looking the other way on that last one --- kind of like you look the other way when your friend has a bad habit of hooking up with bartenders every weekend. Everyone makes mistakes.
I've seen things for cats and birds but as I own neither, cannot attest to the breadth or depth of selection. Also, just to be clear, they DO carry things for little dogs. It's just that at Noe Valley Pet Company, it's the big dogs who are queen bitch.
I live in Noe Valley and based on a friend's recommendation, hired them to walk my dog twice a week. Everything was going fine, until one day the dog walker called me from Upper Market informing me that my dog jumped out of the truck, and he is somewhere on Market. He informed me that since he was running late for his next drop off, and since my dog was not following his commands, I should go find him.
As you can imagine I lost it, and told him to go back and find my dog. He told me he wouldn't and that I would have to get him. I left work with a friend to help me find my dog, somewhere on Castro and Market. We searched the area and after about 30 minutes found him up on the dog park, luckily, walking with a couple and their dog.
I called the owner and told her what happened and how irresponsible the walker was, and can you believe that she DID NOT APOLOGIZE! I told her that I would never bring my dog back or ever recommend her to anyone and she didn't give a rat's ass.
The owners are very unfriendly and not customer service focused as you can see. Grumpy people.
This is a nice neighborhood place. It just has a very homey feel. There is a good selection of toys and some nice clothing. Lots of food and treats to choose from. Staff has always been friendly and helpful to us. Prices seem to be reasonable.
The only downside is that it doesn't carry small animal supplies, not even the basics. If you're like me, have dog, cat and small animals, this won't be a one stop shop for you.
My very first positive review on Yelp.
Great pet supply shop, period.
Props that they don't sell animals, that their prices on (specifically, Wellness canned cat food) are on par with everyone else's - maybe they can't be B&B, but frankly B&B sucks since it was sold and is a pain in the ass to get to, and that the two encounters I've had in there, one with a cool guy who works the counter and the second with one of the owners when I had to exchange some dented cans of food, were extremely pleasant.
No bullshit, no attitude, they have what you need, so go there.
Stumbled across this place by accident on my way back to my new home when I was coincidentally thinking I needed to stock up on *everything* for the imminent arrival of our beloved cat from the UK. Became completely lost in the wide range of pet foods that we just don't have at home. Instead of all the huge corporate names, loads of organic, small brand ranges that I really want to try him on.
The selection of accessories is also extensive, so I'm able to get everything from toys to litter tray to scratching post. Everything I thought I'd have to go to a big chain for, right around the corner.
The person who looked after me was very helpful and gave me some samples of various foods and took a real interest both in my immigrating kitty and my comments on the difference here from pet shops in the UK. When I arrived she was talking to other customers who were clearly regulars and seemed to have a great relationship with her.
I'll certainly be back.
There's a lot of fuss in this eerie town about dogs. I used to live in the middle of fucking nowhere northern california. No matter where I went I paid a grip for 'by-product free' doggie food. It's just how things are in this state...
But I moved south to civilization where things are closer and cheaper. My dog and I sniffed around for the best price and we found Noe Valley Pet the most reasonable! Yay!
My dog, Grendel gives this place several wags for the excellent selection of healthy treats and extensive array of unique and durable toys. I have been buying my boy toys for 13 years and get tired of kongs and tennis balls around the house. Gren loves his 8 ball, his die (Hubs says that he knows that life is a gamble), and his mini tire.
Unfortunately at Gren's age he's on a special low protein diet so he can't have all the delicious lamb, liver, and duck treats. But we still have a great time perusing the aisles for toys and fancy collars.
Um, hello, does any one work here? I would have made purchases, asked questions, could have even become a regular customer since this place is super convenient and that cute little cat needs food on a regular basis. But the two people who seemed to actually be employed there wouldn't give me the time of day, they were too busy...doing what I'm not sure. too bad, not a crisis since there are plenty of other pet shops around.
The staff is kind and knowledgeable. I walked in expecting to get a new puppy in a few days so I had a thousand and one questions. They were happy to help and walked me around the store explaining to my my options and which one they recommend.
One of the owner was there in her lesbian outfit and she was nice, friendly , and assisted us.
I was very happy to give them my business. The prices may have been a little bit above average, but it is better than going to a big name pet store and getting no attention at all. Plus, it feels great to support local business.
The staff here was really friendly, knowledgeable, not too pushy. The selection was on the smaller side for what I was looking for (a flea killing arsenal!), but I did leave with a few products that I am satisfied with.
Petco probably has a better selection but you can't beat this place if you want to buy local. PLUS I overheard an employee mention that NVPC provides health benefits for its workers. Excellent. I'd gladly pay the two extra bucks for a flea fogger!
I just adopted a dog from the SPCA, and they gave me a coupon for 10% off here. My experience was horrible! Not only was I not greeted by anyone, but the two people who were working there spent more time talking and laughing with each other instead of helping customers. I would expect that from Petsmart or something, but this is a little specialty boutique in Noe Valley!
I could have dealt with all of that, but everything is ridiculously priced. I mean, I don't consider myself cheap, but $42 for a poorly-made nylon collar? Even though this place is convenient, I will go out of my way to get what I need instead of step foot into this store again.
I hope the owner reads these negative reviews about her place and does something about it. Clearly the service standard has declined over the past several months.
I like this store for the fact that they are a local, small business. Gotta support that. However - someone once said that they are the Nieman Marcus of pet stores and when it comes to price that's very true.
Another reason that makes me take off stars is the poor quality of some of their cat toys which creates a serious health risk. Cheap stuff imported from China and sold with a 1000% mark up. I pulled the pieces of one of these toys out of my cat's mouth right before she swallowed it.
Similar to my local pet boutique, Pawtrero, but a little more focused on pet jewelry and accessories as opposed to foodstuffs.
Still a great resource for those of us with pampered pooches.
Great store, but the two owners are often cold and unfriendly. I've never got a good vibe from them, which makes me not want to shop there. It's too bad because it's got a fun selection of doggie stuff and in a convenient location.
50lbs of premium kitty litter for $20?
works for me!
On our way to Dolores Park for a little play time we wondered into Noe Valley in search of a particular toy. We were the only customers in the tiny store and the guy behind the counter acted like he couldn't be bothered. I've worked in retail for years and the very least that you can do is greet your customer. Needless to say we did not make a purchase and won't be back.
Awesome store, great selection, wonderful owners, great staff...and a Fort Funston dog walking service!!!!
The only reason it gets 4 out of 5 is that I can never park here. It's a SF issue, not a Noe Valley Pet Co issue, but don't drive here hoping to pick up a 30 pound bag of dog food.
This place is 1/2 block away from my apartment. That means if I had my dog living with me right now, Reese my mixed choco lab, would make this his second home. Even Reese doesn't live with me at the moment, I stop by every now and then to check on goodies I could buy him whenever I have a package to send back home or if I fly back. Staff are not only nice to their human clients but their furry with 4 paws customers as well.
Your dog, cats, and fish needs in Noe Valley, need not look further.
I understand pet stores are limited to what they sell- toys, leashes, etc.- and it's probably slightly challenging for owners to stock up on really original stuff. It seems to me most pet stores here in the city have the same things over and over. Kongs, Nutro food, the same sparkly collars and leashes and on and on. Now, NVPC did have all that, BUT so so so much more as well!!
They're bed selection is huge. They have a great assortment of dishes. Tons of books I haven't seen in any other store including Borders. They carry warm, soft, lovely sweaters which my Oscar loves on cold days. They have organic, holistic and natural foods. The leash/collar selection is lovely and they have many items I haven't seen elsewhere. Some items are pricier, but toys and food are slightly less expensive than elsewhere. They also have Anti-Icky Poo!!! MY FAVORITE CLEANER!! I usually order it online and S&H costs as much as a bottle- now I get it here @ NVPC.
Last, but most importantly and what made me a huge fan of this store. I have a large lab who rips through EVERY toy he has EVER had. Kong material? Give Luke one day and it will be to shreds. Canvas? HA! Rope toys tied tight into animal shapes? 2-3 days if the toy is lucky. Even tennis balls he will shred. Noe Valley carries some dog toys in the shapes of lizards, lobsters and crabs that are huge, squeeky and indistructable for Mr. Luke- for @ least a MONTH. They do cost $17-$22 a piece, but well worth it. Luke chews on them every day for hours and hours trying to rip them without success. Even if he is sleeping or chowing on a rawhide Mr. Luke sets his indestructible toy right next to him. The only time he's without it, really, is on walks & @ the beach (although it does come for the car ride.) He is one happy dog!!
The store is also very clean and doesn't smell @ all. The staff is friendly and I've spent half an hour looking around without feeling rushed. They're stuff is also high quality- all of it- which I love. For you cat owners, Noe Valley also has an abundance of cat products.
This pet store is the best! I have found the prices to be much better than the big pet stores like pet food express and petco. The staff are always friendly and give lots of treats. The selection of food, treats, toys, beds, leashes, etc is great!! Yes, parking can be tough during the busy times and there are a few items that are a bit pricey but overal this is our favorite pet store in the city. We also frequent Pawtrero Hill (in our neighborhood) which is good too, but I find their selection to be much smaller and the staff never remember me or my dog or give us treats and knowledgable advice like they do at Noe Pet. Co.
A great local spot with a big selection of cute toys and healthy food for Fluffy or Fido. And because they're a neighborhood store, they're really responsive to suggestions and requests. When I first started going there, they didn't carry my cat's favorite brand of treats. I mentioned it to the owner, and the next time I came in, there they were!
I'm stunned by all the reviews saying that the staff is rude or unfriendly. My experience has been completely the opposite. Everyone there has always been very friendly and helpful to me. The owner even carried bags of kitty litter to my car a block away! And I didn't even have to bat my eyelashes...
when i want to pamper elvis, this is where i go. noe valley pet is an upscale pet store with gourmet food and treats and other wonderful dog accessories. i have to double check on this, but i think they even have an organic food section. gosh, it's like whole foods for dogs. all this is great, but it does get somewhat expensive after a while. in that sense, i suppose noe valley pet fits right in with the increasingly affluent noe valley neighborhood, aka the pacific heights south.
* um, yeah, they carry cat stuff, too.
Great Dog toys... My Dog Fana loves her toys from here.
I really believe in supporting local business. And based on some of the yelp reviews I thought about going to another locally owned pet store. But I live in Noe Valley so I stopped in and I'm glad I did. I just got my dog and a little freaked out about my new responsibilities one of the owners walked me through what I would need, a bed, some bowls, a collar and leash, a gentle leader, high quality food and something to chew. Lots of things to chew in fact. Father and son are doing very well. Thank you.
I first started shopping here when Mika (our cat) refused her usual brand of food, and we needed to seek out something new. Their food selection is excellent, and they are the only shop in the city (that I have found) to sell specialty cat food made of rabbits and ducks. Yes, our cat is very picky and has many requirements, and it's nice to shop somewhere that understands, where the staff is just as insane about their pets as you are. My only complaint is that they don't sell wheat-based cat litter.
They have the best collar selection ever IMO............Plus, if they don't have something, they can probably order it for you!
This is a really cute store to visit but not necessarily to buy. I have a miniature dachshund and I love to spoil her but the prices here were crazy expensive!
I get cat food here sometimes because it's on the way to or from somewhere, and I like that they have the large/bulk size of the one kibble on the planet that will not give my cat the runs or make her fat. (Darn her gastrointestinal infortitude!) The prices are a bit on the high side, but if I had a dog and wanted to buy it really cute accessories, I'd go here for sure.
The Bichon Frise of pet supply stores: Small, swanky, and a little pricey. The owner is very friendly and low key and they offer a vast supply of treats and quality foods as well as nice bedding, unusual leashes and collars, and other pooch swag.
I'm like a kid in a candy store..or I mean a dog in a pet store..yeah that's right,, this store is for pets..not me..that cookie in the jar is for dogs..those sparkly collars are for cats not a braclet for me. that soft leopard print blanket is not a throw for me but for someones pet... okay so let me pamper my precious kiki with stuff so I can live vicariously thru her or she can through me ???... ..so much to sniff.. all the toys to play with...yummy organic food...for pets...plus the staff is super nice they can pet me anytime!...I mean help me anytime!
I love this shop....I mean, What's not to love about friendly folks who love pets?
