Allow me to jump on the No Frill bandwagon.  I was staying in Chesapeake for the week and I seemingly came to Norfolk every night for dinner. This was a total Yelp find, so thank you Yelpers.

I had the Kentucky Hot Brown which was some sort of deli meat on texas toast with cheese and tomato and bacon.  It was delicious and no amount of time on the eliptical will remove the fat I gained from that one dish.  I would totally come back here again, but this place does strike me as a better lunch spot.

Now if only Yelpers were as active on the Peninsula side.

This was The Man and I's first time at the Norfolk location, and we must say that the food and atmosphere was fantastic!

We stopped in after the lunch crowd had dissipated, around 2pm, and were promptly seated out in the patio area. It was a nice day outside, and the patio was fully enclosed with mesh, although one or two little bugs managed to sneak thru. No biggie though...

We decided to eat light, and ordered the Spotswood Salad and the Turkey pita to share. We could not believe our eyes when the waitress brought out the salad. It was heaped, and that's an understatement, with bleu cheese crumbles, apple slices, alfalfa sprouts, candied almond clusters, cranberries, raisins and a whole host of other delicious veggies, on a spinach base. I dug in right away and was pleasantly surprised by the mixture of flavors. Although i am not a big bleu cheese fan, it was good. Actually, it was excellent, since I got smokey bacon bits in every forkful. You can't go wrong with lots of bacon!

The Man started on the turkey pita and proclaimed it very satisfying. It was stuffed with so much turkey that he had to eat some with a fork before picking up the pita. It also had some lettuce/veggies, a lot of cheese and some kind of sauce. I took half of it, and while good, I would've preferred no sauce.

Portion wise, we could not finish the salad. That ended up being lunch the next day, and it was equally as good.

If I were reviewing the food alone, it would be a 4 star deal. But the location of this restaurant in the heart of Granby, the service, portion sizes and just plain coolness of this place...well, that bumps it up to a 5 in our book. Oh yeah, the fact that we both found parking (drove separately) on the first pass, and it was free...? That garners an extra Whoop, Whoop from me!

My friend and I came here on our last day of training in Virginia. She really wanted a salad, I just wanted to eat. I searched salad and this was the first pick.

We arrived around 9:00PM and were seated. Then we took a really long time deciding. The Mango Iced Tea was outstanding. I ordered the special meatloaf, my friend ordered the Chicken Pita and we shared the Portobello Mushroom appetizer.

Needless to say, we were satisfied. Whatever the crazy sauce they put on the meatloaf made it ten times better and the entire entree was just good from start to finish. Definitely worth what I paid for and then some.

Also, the interior decor was very crafty, homely... whatever whatever.

This place is great!

They have small parking lot, so you might have better luck finding parking on the street.  They have outside and inside seating. The staff is super friendly =0)

Their menu has a wide range of things from Salads to Pitas to sandwiches to a roast beef platter.  They also have daily specials which are bit pricy.  But the regular menu is very decently priced.

I ordered their steak pita which had some sort of spiced sauce, black beans, lettuce, and tomato.  You get to pick any side dish, I recommend the string beans or garlic spinach (very good!).  My husband ordered the Teriyaki Tuna Pita which was very good as well!!

Overall our experience was great =0)

No Frill is an all around place.  It sits on a quaint street full of shops, an old school movie theater, ice cream parlors and plenty of small places to dine.  This area is called Ghent.

We went on a weekday night so it was not too lively but there were still some patrons.  The service was prompt and friendly.

The menu was mixed with home-style American food and some creative dishes.  Also, the salads are to die for!  Ever just want a good salad for dinner? Well this is the place to go.

I hope to visit again!

After reading some pretty good reviews, I decided to stop at No Frills along my long road trip from the Newport News Airport to Nags Head, NC.  I was surprised to see that this restaurant is located in a cute/trendy-ish area with quite a few other bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Since it was a nice night, my boyfriend and I sat on the enclosed patio and enjoyed the people watching.  I started out our meal with one of the signature martinis and he had a beer.  We'd been traveling all day and were famished, so we ordered the vegetarian nachos to share.  I love anything with black beans, so I thought they were really good.  And filling.  You literally get a mountain of nachos.

My boyfriend ordered the soft shell crab special which he though was just "ok."  He'd never had soft shell crab before, and realized he didn't like it as soon as he started eating his meal.  Oh well...I had the vegetarian Reuben.  I have to admit that I really love Reuben sandwiches and was excited to see a vegetarian version on the menu.  It tasted even better than I hoped.  The sauerkraut was piled on and the cheese was oohey gooey and delicious.

We were pretty stuffed after our big meal, so we didn't get a chance to try dessert, although everything on the dessert menu sounded so delicious.  I wish I lived in the area and could go back to try something.

I would say more like 3 1/2 stars. Not bad, but not great. Located in a cute area. We sat in the outdoor patio, which had a fly problem. They did have it screened, but there was still a lot of them. Our food was pretty good. I had the bacon cheeseburger and my husband had the pulled pork sandwich. Our waitress wasn't the most friendliest person, but she did bring me a new side of fries. The other ones were cold. Really good bbq sauce!!!

My last day in the VA we decided on Sunday Brunch.  I ordered the Ham Hash with grits.  I never knew grits could be good!  So the last time I ordered grits was in a cafeteria where my sister taught elementary school.  It was disgusting, I added so much butter and salt to give them flavor, nothing seemed to work.

These grits that had cheese in them were amazing.  I would have ordered a giant bowl of them if I had the option.  The rest of the food was fine and the service was great.  I kept referring to our server as "Scarlet Johannsen" (not to her face).  Regardless it was great food and I loved the covered outdoor/heated seating.

Their desserts are off the CHAIN. I don't know if they make them in-house or "import" them, but they are consistently the best thing on the menu. I've had the carrot cake, the 4 layer coconut cake, and more recently the coconut rum cheesecake (OMG OMG OMG)....you will die.

This is one of those places you've been to a million times and haven't reviewed.  It's one of the top places for food on Colley.  I've only been here for lunch, and for the last 3 times I can't pull myself away from their new Philly Cheese Steak - I substitute lettuce for onions and splash some vinegar and oil on it - very good!  If you're in the area, this is a safe bet.

This place is a step above Chil's-type food. The menu is nothing outstanding, but their portions are generous and the service friendly and fast. The place itself is nice, but with such a great name--I was really expecting more out of the place. It delivers what it advertises though, No Frill!

FYI. The Grande Nachos. Are very GRANDE. If it's just one or two of you, you will most likely not finish anything else you order. They were quite good though! The Spotswood Melt also hit the spot, little dry though.

If you're ever in the mood for heavy American food this is the place to be.  The funky chicken sandwich with the mashed potatoes are the best options on the menu by far!  The portions are huge and there is something there for just about everybody.  The vegetarian menu is all right, but not the highlight of the restaurant.  It's a good place for brunch and the prices are reasonable too.  It's located right off of Colley on Spotswood with parking in the back and on the street.

Great place to go. They have a variety of foods from appetizers, soups, to hamburgers, fish and pitas. They also have a great dessert menu.

I had their special duck dish which was good, but a little on the pricey side (expected since the cheapest duck dishes are around $20). In general, the dishes were affordable. The French Onion soup was fantastic and... of course best of all was the dessert. I had an ice cream sandwich which is vanilla and chocolate ice cream sandwiched between two very soft chocolate chip cookies covered in whip cream, strawberries and fudge. I'd go back just for the dessert!

Service was nice and fast. The only downside is that the restaurant is on a one way street and you'll have to turn several corners until you're on the right one. Parking can be an issue as well especially when they're busy.

I have been here a few times and have never been disappointed.  It is another great place to celebrate, or just to kick back and relax on a Sunday.  The drinks, service, food and desserts are out of this world.  Servers are always attentive and the food always tastes fresh and delicious!  Try one of the pitas...they are good!  The desserts are also awesome!  Drinks...get some!

Went for the first time on Sunday night for a quick bite.  We shared the ribs with the potato gratin & sauteed spinach and a green salad.

The dressing for the salad was great.  It was a ginger orange dressing and it was delicious.  A good green salad with cukes, tomatoes, mushrooms, radishes and red onions.

The ribs were very tasty with a vinegary sauce on top.  Tasty!  The potatoe gratin was a little weird.  A scoop (like an ice cream scoop) of shredded type hash brown potatoes with cheese.  They would probably have better had they been hot.  The spinach was really good.

The atmosphere was ok, nothing special.  Everyone was pretty busy enjoying their meals, nothing too exciting going on.

Seems like a good place for a predictable meal.  There were several things on the menu that I'd like to try.

The place you head for a consistently good meal at a great price.  Helpings are generous and service is fast.  Laine and I ventured to Frill last week.  We also brought a No Frill virgin, my friend Briana*.  There was a line, which is not unusual, but remember two things, the wait is never very long and you can always sit at the bar.  We opted for the bar since we needed in and out service in 45 minutes.  The bartender's attentiveness was as good as a waiter or waitress at a table.  I ordered the Grilled Pita Quesadilla.  Frill serves this as an appetizer or an entree, with the entree including a side for only $1 more.  That's a deal and I chose the poppy seed cole slaw.  This is one of my favorite sides and measured up as usual. Briana ordered the Funky Chicken Sandwich, one of Frill's all-star menu items.  This is the perfect blend of chicken, bacon, tomato and Swiss cheese on your choice of bread (they suggest sourdough).  The sandwich is grilled and served with a side.  Briana chose the garlic mashers.  She loved the sandwich, but said the potatoes could have been better.  If I remember they are not overly creamy, which is also my preference.  The food came very quickly and our server brought our bills at the same time, which was helpful with our limited time frame.  The menu includes a variety of salads, sandwiches, wraps, burgers and entrees.  Some of my favorite items include the Spotswood Salad, which has blue cheese, granny smith apples and caramelized raisins and almonds, the Funky Chicken salad, the salad version of the sandwich described above, the Spotswood Melt, a burger with Swiss and cheddar cheese, bacon and grilled onions on grilled sourdough bread, the crab cake sandwich, the chili and the onion rings.  I must promote these, the onion rings are to die for!  Frill is always busy, which is a testament to its quality food, bright and helpful service and long-standing reputation as one of Ghent's best restaurants.  I have to admit I have eaten there three times in one week and even twice in one day, if that says how much I enjoy a Frill meal.  I highly recommend No Frill Grill for lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch.  It is a great place to go before your next movie at the Naro.

~Alex

Alex and I were stunned when we realized that we had never reviewed No Frill Grill. Why? Well, for starters, Alex would eat there 6 out of 7 days if her schedule permitted! Further, in our humble opinions, it is one of the best places to eat in Ghent. (Never been to the beach location, sorry). The menu  has a lot of variety. Even your pickiest eaters can find something of interest. And, as Alex says, they are consistent  with their service and preparation. Lunch last Friday at the Grill was fairly typical, except that I snagged a parking spot right by the front door. Thank you parking gods! There was about 10-12 people waiting to be seated, so eating at the bar was a good move. I arrived late, but Alex had my back when I called in my order (to her!). I ordered the Asian Portobello Salad. I realize that some of our loyal readers get tired of hearing about salads, but this one is a doosey! I must have told Alex about 100 times how good the mushrooms were. Service at the bar was great. She was friendly, but not overbearing. Being a bit on the short side, I sometimes find sitting at a bar uncomfortable, especially when I am not being anesthetized by martinis. However, they have really comfortable chairs, not stools, so I didn't feel like a toddler with dangling feet or an octogenarian with a back ache. I could go on and on, but you get the point. If you haven't been to No Frill Grill, put it on your short list of places to go, things to do. You'll thank us (if you know who we really are;)

No Frill Grill has the best price-for-quality value in the greater Hampton Roads area.  Let me break it down: huge portions, same exact thing every time you order it, no surprises, quick and friendly service, varied menu.  My favorites? Can't go wrong with the signature Funky Chicken in sandwich or salad form.  Just the right mix of tangy dressing with crispity bacon and grilled to moist perfection chicken each time.  Solid vegetarian reuben and pita quesadillas that are not as greasy as the traditional sort.  Kentucky hot brown (remember those?) is melty and oozy.  Burgers require two hands and a pile of napkins.  Entrees go to the edge of the plate.  This place is always packed, but the food remains solid and memorable.  Always a must-go-to when I return home.

The best food around. We love the Sunday brunch. It is good if you go for lunch or dinner. If our dining guests have never been there then that is the first place we suggest. We tend to like the Hilltop location better for the atmosphere but frequent the Norfolk location also. The service is always great.

It's good, but not great.  The food is reliably adequate and the service the same.  It's a good place to take clients for lunch or out-of-town guests for dinner because you know there will be something on the menu for everyone and that it will be ok.  It's definitely not cuisine and not a date night place.  It's high-end bar food.

And the prices can't be beat. I've been going here since they opened. Be prepared to wait for 15-20 minutes on Friday and Saturday night.
