Greek Restaurant Flubs Greek Salad, Nation Hangs Head in Shame.
* 45 minute wait for my Greek salad, in a fairly empty restaurant where the employees outnumbered the customers 2:1.
* No apology for the wait, or apparent awareness this is crap service.
* Salad contained only two olives. I'm certain this is illegal in Greece.
* Gross tomatoes. I can stomach the NY diner hard-as-nails tomato as required. But this was of the giant, overly red mushy-mealy variety. Great if you don't have a gag reflex. Sadly I do.
* Murky oil dressing with no discernible flavor other than oil.
In essence, a large plate of undelicious.
On the plus side. Two stars for:
* Very pleasant waitress who cannot be held responsible for the food.
* Nicely presented food.
* Pleasant atmosphere - it's a good place for the odd off-hours escape from the city's hustle and bustle.
I imagine they probably have some decent fare, if only because it makes me feel good to imagine it. But if they're Greek and they can't do a Greek salad halfway decent, then hate to be a bitch but buh-bye.
Stepped in for brunch here coz I wanted to try something different and I saw great reviews here. Sadly disappointed.
It's true that the bread basket is a surprising change and I do like their muffins. The chicken sandwich on the pre-fixe... is sadly dry and bland. I know some people have actually recommended it but it's definitely not the best chicken sandwich out there.
If I were you, I'd walk one block up to my favorite Chelsea brunch place. LBV.
Totally sub-par Greek/Mediterannean/Italian food, though on the menu it sounds delicious (rock shrimp saffron rissotto? mm. but not so much--bland and dry). This genre of food is so well done in so many nearby locales (Crispo on 14th? Yummay!), that it's really only worth it if you're right there and starving.
The 2 stars do stand for something though-- laid back, never-rushed service, and plentiful space (outdoor and indoor). Also, portions are pretty large, so you can share and make this a decently economical meal.
If you decide to venture in, the Meze Platter (4 types of greek dips with warm pita) is pretty solid. In fact, me + Meze + a coctail may happen again one day...
Had a really nice striped bass dinner here. It was on the day of pride in the midst of chelsea, but they still seated us quickly. There were a ton of people boozin it up in the front bar but they let us a pick a table a bit removed from the din.
It took a while to get drinks and bread but I attribute this mostly to the number of people crowding the bar. The bread was really yummy and our waiter made sure we got second helpings while we waited. The olive oil/tomato dipping sauce was good. My striped bass was excellent! Served on a bed of potatoes and spinach with a lovely sauce and some beans and scallops. oh my.
the edges of my food were a little cool, so they lose a star.
A friend of mine and I refer to this as the Holiday Inn.
Where else, other than at a motel restaurant , can you find cheap Americanized Greek food, served by Mexicans, whilst listening to The Pretenders piped-in over Muzak?
The atmosphere here is certainly not grand, but it's a OK standby and one of the only Greek restaurants in the area.
Excellent!
This place is great for brunch. The food and service is always top notch.
Once you're seated for brunch they come around with water and a complimentary bread basket that's not just regular bread, it has a variety of muffins and rolls with a side of butter and jam. This is such a great idea since fans of brunch always sleep in to nurse their hang-overs and by the time we're stumbing out for food our stomachs are eating themselves.
The brunch menu is great, despite no unlimited drink service. There's plenty of seating inside and outside.
I haven't eater dinner here, but I've gone for drinks after work. There doesn't seem to be a happy hour special, but you may want to check on that. It's open in the front where patrons (usually of the male persuasion) can hang out the window because there's not much room there around the bar. There are some benches and stools, but when it's rife with people you may find yourself standing with your beverage.
Anyway, check out this place. It's all good.
Ok... so I just went to this place tonight.
Out of towner, saw a swank looking place in Chelsea, looked at the menu and it looked delicious.
My date gave her food a 4 out of 5 while I gave my food a 2 out of 5.
The service was great, the waiter was great, but there are a few problems with this restaurant.
First off. Yeah, I know the restaurant is in Chelsea, so they usually cater to a..ehem...queerer, crowd. But that doesn't mean the music has to sound like it's from a gay club. The music just didn't fit the restaurant and it really detracted from the atmosphere.
ALCOHOLICS INFORMATION-
Another problem. No visible beer list. The wine list was..okay, but when I ordered a draft beer (which they had 5 or 6 on draft, it was NOT cold, and the beer tasted stale.
I got the steak sandwich and ordered it medium well. It came out more like medium rare. It was so hard I only ate half of it, and gave up on the rest of it.
My date got the salmon and LOVED it, and so SHE is the only reason I gave the place a three. Otherwise it would have had a two from me.
The waiter WAS great tho, and even took the banter from myself and my date. The manager even came over and checked on us soon after we got our dinner. But still the food I found was lacking, and the atmosphere just didn't flow. My steak sandwich was around 13 dollars while my date's fish was around 24.
Hope that helps.
I had the best grilled chicken sandwich for brunch here. My friend suggested this place and it was a good choice.
The sandwich is huge. It comes with a tasty salad and french fries. For the amount we paid, we got our money's worth. We chose to have the pre-fixe brunch so we got a juice, the main course, and when we wanted to finish off our meal with tea, the waiter said that's included in the pre-fixe so it was a real deal.
Loved the setting, it was spacious, quiet, and warm (need that on this freezing day). Couldn't have been happier.
3.5 stars
It was a quiet Monday holiday and after all the gluttony from Valentine's Day (ah-hem...only for SOME lovebirds), I'm not surprised that restaurants are a bit quiet today.
After catching a movie in Chelsea, my friend and I walked up and down on 8th ave, trying to find a place to have lunch. There are so many options, but I've a fickle palate, so we finally settled on Nisos when my friend got annoyed with me. I kind of knew what I wanted and that was the salmon salad.
I can't tell if it's worth the price...well, I guess so in this neighborhood. The salmon wasn't fishy and was perfectly grilled. The spinach salad was refreshing and we had complimentary peasant bread with tomato/olive oil dip. The bread was quite chewy and not toasted. Actually, I felt like chewy a piece of gum, but because I was hungry, I asked for a second plate and the waiter was cool with it. My friend got the ahi tuna wrap that came with fries and a small side salad. Not bad for the price of $12. Drinks are expensive, but you do get free soda refill.
The atmosphere is comfortable and the waitress was attentive (water always filled). Busboys are cool too. Hey, how come people never compliment their efforts?! They should get some credits on Yelp too! I mean, they do a lot of labor work as well and they sure don't get as much tips as the waiters.
It was a nice experience. Not really a "Greek" destination, but an average-priced restaurant to chill with friends.
I really liked this place. Nice atmosphere, full menu with a lot of options, and nice staff. The octopus appetizer was very good although I'm not a big octopus fan, I went back for more - everyone was delighted by it. I had the swordfish which was great with super good mashed potatoes, and broccoli and green beans. I loved everything except the greek wine. Stick to prosecco or cocktails.
Johnny had the chicken which was great, the raviolo looked fantastic, as did the chicken caesar salad. All plates were completely whiped clean (everyone cleared their plates).
Good stuff: Perfectly acceptable food. Solid atmosphere that can be relaxed and casual or romantic. Friendly staff. Decent variety of food.
Less than good stuff: Not a huge variety for vegetarians. Service can be too hands off. Lopsided portions on entrees.
Miscellaneous stuff: They were accommodating to our stroller and kept it out of the staff's way and other patrons. They were accommodating to a dog owner who sat at the sidewalk cafe. Post dinner wine served when you ask for your check. Yummy dipping oil and bread once you order.
I've been for brunch and for dinner. It's a good back-up when you don't know where else to go or you want somewhere that's not part of THE SCENE on a Saturday evening.
I've passed by Niso's countless times without ever having any interest to try it. I have been conditioned to have low expectations for most restaurant's in Chelsea when it comes to good food. Of course there are some stand out places located in Chelsea but, none of them are located on 8th Ave. With this said, the only reason I came to Niso's was because one of my friend's specifically requested to go here and so, Niso's I went!
The hostess was sans 'tude which is always a plus. The place itself is long and spacious which is good for group dining. They also have outdoor seating for those wanting to enjoy the warm evening weather. The decor itself is simple and nothing impressive.
Our server greeted us immediately and was very nice throughout. The busboys need a little work because they weren't as smooth but their lack of polish wasn't unforgivable.
We ordered the following: Grilled Octopus (app)- bit too chewy and bland/tasteless
Seafood Kebab- it had various fishes with grilled bell peppers & rice Pilaf- BIG portion but more bell peppers than fish; my gal pal and I both ordered it and both agreed it was 'meh'.
Beef Kebab- BIG portion of grilled Beef w/rice Pilaf that was much tastier than my Seafood platter.
Medi Mix Platter- Octopus, Sausage, Calamari, Mussels; this was also HUGE and pretty tasty!
Dessert: Flan; TERRIBLE! YUCK! It was drippy and tasteless like Jello!
Also, the bread they served tasted stale and wasn't even WARM! I highly doubt I'll be going back but at least I now have a reason not to!
Great little Greek Place in Chelsea. You have to try the Saganaki! The show alone is great (ask for the guy from Puebla to serve it), and then when you take it - unbelievable!
Also had the Rack of Lamb, superbly cooked and tasty
The staff is friendly and attentive (and be a little wary of the grumpy owner)
This is one of my favorite NYC restaurants. My boyfriend and I were in search of some good Greek food and found this place on yelp.
Atmosphere is nice, cozy (but the tables are not too squished together, which is good- I hate that!) The waitstaff are pretty nice though we did have a rude waiter once but I'll let it slide. They are very good about constantly refilling your water which is a major plus.
The meal (I've only had dinner here) is started with some nice chewy bread and a tomato-paste like dipping sauce which tastes very good. As an appetizer we've had the fried calamari (pretty standard) and also the saganaki- which is basically a plate of fried cheese which is lit on fire in front of you. What's better than that?
The Nisos salad is very good- a standard Greek salad. The salmon is really really good a well as the beef kebabs. Best part of the beef kebabs is they come with this amazing wild mushroom risotto which you have to order if you go.
But by far, the reason we love this place SOOOO much and the reason I'm giving it 5 stars is because of one special dessert called "loukoumades"- hot little heavenly fried dough balls of goodness- served with maple walnut gelato and drizzled with maple syrup. When I eat this dessert I have an out of body experience. To me its that good. If you try Nisos you have to order these!!!!!!!!!! The plate is definitely big enough to share between 2-3 people.
I love to come here for brunch. Always a friendly wait staff and there has never been a wait (for indoor or outdoor seating). The food is delicious and filling. Try the eggs benedict. The burger is also fantastic.
this is my favorite spot for brunch!
The smoked salmon is delicious, deff to be checked out.
I've dined here a few times. Superb waitstaff. Great cocktails. Top notch service. Try the mussels. The seafood in general is done quite well. 8th Avenue is slowly become a treasure trove of great places to shop and dine. I'm not sure how long they've been there. But they are sure to be around for quite a while. Nice for groups and couples who want to top of a great evening with a sumptuous meal.
Can I just say Yelp rocks?! I was walking around 8th street looking for a nice place to eat lunch when I stumbled upon Nisos. I quickly popped out my iPhone and opened my Yelp application and quickly discovered that this was the place to eat. They have a "quick brunch" special that includes your choice of 1 of about 10 different menu items, and includes a free mimosa and a bread basket. I chose the Cobb Salad after looking at another review on Yelp, and I am so glad I did! The Cobb Salad was to die for. Coupled with the bread basket, I left the place feeling satisfied, not like I needed a crane, so it was just absolutely perfect and the Mimosa was delicious. The service is also excellent, and the restroom was clean! I'm giving them 5 stars because of the value and the food quality.
Conveniently located across from the Joyce Theater, we stopped to have an appetizer after a show. We ordered the cold seafood appetizer for two. The seafood was fresh and the chef was kind enough to let us substitute the clams for oysters or shrimp. I would have given this place four stars, but I felt it was little overpriced.
Great calamari appetizers... get two! The fish here is supposedly fresh but mine came out kind of dry.
Yes, I can't deny they have great grilled calamari appertizers. This is the first place where I got introduced to grill calamari. Not many people eat there but the environment is very pleasant.
I really like this place, outside seating is my fav( I find myself visiting this place often during warm summer days-nights :) But you have to know what to order to actually LOOOVE it.. I recommend Nisos Cobb Salad(and I am usually NOT into salad...but this one is superrrrrr...I can prob have this as an entree anyday!) other things to order are: Meze Platter ..hugeeee! Saganaki(greek pan fried cheese w/lemon) and ofcourse my fave Tuna-tar tar...really good!!!!!!!!! :) if you go there and order what I recommended ,you will loveeee this place
It's a lovely Greek seafood restaurant in the lovely Chelsea neighborhood. I suggest the avgolemono (chicken and lemon) soup. If you enjoy whole fish (which I don't) but if you do, they bring that little baby out uncooked on a dish for you to inspect (maybe for WMD's or something, I don't know). But it had a nice atmosphere. Great for pre- or post-theater dining.
I hate to say this but I just had dinner at Nisos and found it incredibly mediocre. The waiter made the effort but the whole place felt old and tired and like it was coasting. The waiter was friendly but the other service folks seemed unfriendly/unhappy. I had a salad with grilled chicken and the chicken was almost inedible -- like it had been grilled yesterday and fried today to warm it up. The salad dressing was very salty. My friend had a seafood salad which was just ok- skimpy on seafood. Chelsea, in my opinion, has tons of average restaurants and, unfortunately, this is one of them.
