I've been going to Nirvana for about 5 years. I go to Shawna and she's awesome (Victoria has worked on my hair as well and she's amazing too!)!! Shawna is just so knowledgeable and talented; the junior stylists are always coming up to her and looking at what's she's doing, asking questions and just admiring haha. She's also super sweet and fun to talk to. Most importantly, she always does a perfect cut and color. I only trust her with my hair! :) Once, I came in for an appointment and asked her if I had given her her tip last time (I wasn't sure if I did). Her reply was 'don't worry about it, coming back to me over and over again is what really matters!' how sweet! :)
Also, everyone is super friendly who works here. The moment you walk in they ask you if you'd like any water, tea, coffee..or a cute little cookie from their cookie jar. They are also very flexible. I once was running really late, and they were able to schedule my color that day, then my cut the next morning, and didn't penalize me in any way. I also have to say that I would trust ANYONE here with my cut and color, but Shawna is my bestie!!
Hate to have to update but I always feel I must give honest and up to date reviews.
Went last night- showed up for my appointment and when I said who I was there for they gave me a confused look and said Christine was sick and didn't I get a call? Nope definitely did not. They looked in the computer and somehow my appointment got cancelled. So, not only did it get cancelled, I had shown up and no one was there to do my hair.
I do have to say that the women were really accomodating when I explained I was going across the country the next night- they found someone to do my hair. Overall, I was semi-satisfied. I borught in a picture and my hair really doesn't look anything like it and I am not ecstatic about the color.
Also, last time my stylist was sick I received a $50 discount and this time there was no mention of it even after I had much more complication getting it rescheduled.

Moving across the country, it can be a bit scary to find a new salon. Knowing I wanted only an… Read more »
I've been going to Nirvana for over four years since I moved to San Jose from the East Coast. Kayla is wonderful. She always takes the time to perfect her cuts and is an expert at coloring and especially highlights. The salon has been remodeled which allows for more comfortable seating while you wait.
I have been going to Nirvana for a little under a year . I choose them as they were closer to home than the Aveda salon in Palo Alto (Juut). I was dubious that anyone could match my previous hair stylist dresser - and was pleasantly surprised.
Shawna for cuts and color is amazing. I have wavy hair that is not particularly easy to cut. Shawna worked her magic in creating a very becoming and easy-to-manage style. She is also warm and professional - generally running on time.
For color, I have also seen Raymond. He too is excellent - though I have not had him for cuts - only color, I have seen his haircuts and they rock.
Went in for a Brazilian blow out with Shawna. She's friendly, knowledgeable and overall a great stylist. I have fine, wavy hair which became super dry after a recent highlighting episode. The blowout cut down the volume and the frizz but I still have some of my waves. Shawna said the volume will slowly restore in two weeks. Blow dry time this morning for shiny soft hair = 5 mins!
Oh my goodness! Never in my life have I felt so pampered after going to a salon! Scalp massages. Wine. Relaxing!
I haven't had my hair cut in 2 years and was very scared about letting someone touch it. After about a year of my mom saying that I needed to go see Janis, I finally gave in. THANK THE HEAVENS I DID!
Janis is amazing! When I told her I wanted to keep my length in my hair but make it fun, she created cute layers. It looks so good and I've gotten several compliments.
I will be going back... forever. :)
I've been going to Nirvana now for 5+ years... specifically Kayla.
This is more than a 1-trick hair place though... so if Kayla wasn't around, I'd probably ask Janis to do my cuts.
The place is nice and quirky enough to be amusing. There have been minor missteps in my last two appointments (I'm not recommending their on-line appointment system as there may be some glitches there), but they've done their best to make up for it.
This is an Aveda place so if you're anti-Aveda for some reason, you're not going to like it here.
If you don't have a preference for products, then you really won't be disappointed by what Aveda offers.
Their "extra" freebie services are great.... the neck rub, the aromatic journey, etc.... I tell you, if I could, I'd come in every day just to get my hair shampooed!
The funny thing is I remember coming to Nirvana for the first time when I first moved to the Bay in '96. Los Gatos was too far for me to go to after I moved up from Palo Alto to San Francisco.... but when I moved down to Santana Row, I thought "why not" again. I'd met a stylist and said I'd visit her salon. She said "Nimbus" but I was still thinking "Nirvana". That little misstep resulted in the last 5 years of good hair care.
If you're looking for the same, I'd say give Nirvana a try.
Tell them "El Claudster" sent ya! ;^)
I had a Brazilian blow out done with Jessica yesterday and I have to say the entire experience was OUTSTANDING. Jessica was patient, explained the procedure, answered my questions. She even pointed out flaws with my hair cut which she fixed without charge.
The salon itself is a little small but tastefully done. They have great coffee and snacks. Overall, I would recommend this salon in a heartbeat. I love that it is GREEN salon and all products have to be approved before they are available for sale or use. Everyone I saw there was very pleasant and always smiling.
The other great thing is they actually have stylists there on Mondays, how unique is that. It is way more flexible then the typical los gatos salon. And, if you are considering a Brazilian blowout, I highly recommend you have a conversation with Jessica.
Absolutely love this salon. Every single person is genuinely friendly and helpful. I was just inquiring about services and they were more than happy to recommend a stylist, let me know how to make an appointment when I was ready, etc...
They give great massages during the haircuts which is a nice bonus.
Raymond is amazing because he really takes the time to understand your hair and then explains what he is doing every step of the way. And he gives you the choice before he continues instead of making mistakes with your hair.
It was hard to find a new place, but this is definitely a place to try if you are looking for someone new to cut your hair.
Janis did a great job cutting my hair. It was obvious it needed to be cut and re-styled and she gave me a cut that was really versatile, whether curled, straightened, or just blow-dried. I brought some pictures in to give her an idea of what I wanted and she did exactly that. I also love their online appointment system - it makes booking appointments a cinch!
Just one thing I wasn't aware of - they only accept gratuitites by cash or check. I had to scrounge for cash to give a tip.
I went to this salon at the end of January to look for someone to do my bridal party hair and make up for my wedding. I decided on this salon b/c the lady that did my trial hair and make up then was very nice, she did a great job on my hair and make up and their wedding package prices were great.
Here's the reason why I'm giving this salon only 1 star. First and foremost, the salon lady (whom I saw in Jan.) did a SPECTACULAR job on my hair and make up for my wedding...I couldn't be happier.
While I was having my pre bridal hair appt. with her about two weeks before my wedding, we talked about my make up since I had my pre bridal make up appt. about a week later. She proceeded to tell me that the make up the salon uses (which is Aveda) isn't really good for weddings and she suggested that I should buy Mac make up since that's really more geared toward weddings.
Um...this is TWO WEEKS BEFORE MY WEDDING! She couldn't tell me this when I saw her in January?!?!? I'm speculating that she didn't mention this then b/c I would've gone to another salon, which is true. But I feel as if I was misled. She used the Aveda make up on me in Jan. and I thought it was fine. I liked her technique and I thought it stayed on for quite some time. But this was in Jan. and my wedding wasn't until end of May so sometimes you start questioning what you remember!
Don't get me wrong, the lady I worked with is very nice and like I said, she did a great job on me, but I was beyond irritated when she told me this. However, I kept my mouth shut b/c it was so close to my wedding and I still wanted her to do a good job on me.
Now, she didn't force me to buy Mac makeup, but if the person who's going to apply your make up doesn't really have faith in her salon's products, well of course any logical person would buy whatever make up the make up artist suggests, right?????
So, in the middle of my wedding preparation, amidst all the stress, I had to add yet another errand and buy the Mac make up. Even the person who was helping me thought it was weird that I was buying my own darn make up! This also means that I had to spend more money than I budgeted for this b/c well...gee, I thought I'd be using THEIR make up!!!! Luckily, Mac allows you to return anything within 30 days and I did just that...however, it was yet another errand I had to do after my wedding.
In addition, the owner needs to tell her associates exactly what the prices are for wedding parties. I was given different prices by different people, but luckily, I obtained a document that stated their wedding package prices. I'm not sure why each associate didn't know what the prices were.
Customer serivce is always FIRST- the service sets the atmosphere. They absolutely make you feel comfortable. They greet you, check you in & even ask if you would like tea, water, whatever beverage you want (including alcohol - woe! Never thought of a salon serving that before).
Stylist - I hear great things about all of them, but I LOVE Shawna Shiroma! I was a devoted Super Cuts fan, & after years of disappointment, I chose to try Nirvana. My sister recommended Shawna & she was absolutely right! She is addicting... her cutting edge style, her perfectionst tendancy & her daring hair styles. She hooks me up like no other has done before!
Price - Too expensive for me, which is why I can only go 2x a year, (hence the 4 star, not 5) BUT the service & stylist is great enough that I save up for this luxury.
Great ambiance and cool stylists. You feel really comfortable as you walk in and greeted. Someone is always willing to help you and greet you as you come in even if the receptionist is not at her desk.
I've been going here for years now and Shawna is my stylist. It's always hard to find a stylist that will listen to your needs and yet opinionated but not overbearing. Always there to give you constructive hair style criticsm, which I appreciate, but not always agree to. However, she does have a way of convincing you and turns out, she is right every time! Thanks Shawna!
Shawna is an outgoing fun, sweet, yet down to business kinda person. She'll hook the guys up with some sweet hair cuts and the ladies with the whole sha-bang! She's also one of the hairstylist I work with for wedding makeup and updos! So if you guys ever need a great Makeup artist and and experienced Hair stylist for your wedding.....visit http://www.lindangomak...!
I've been going to Nirvana for over three years now. I love all the stylists there. Everyone has a great personality and they are all extremely knowledgeable and up-to-date on styles. Kayla is my current favorite. She fixed a bad cut I had gotten while out of the area. She's amazing! I'm never going elsewhere for a cut, that's for sure.
I love the ambiance. It's very Zen. Even the bathroom is pleasant, equipped with candles and hand lotion. This salon is the true essence of nirvana.
My original appointment was okay with Eileen. She had to cancel my second appointment, and the salon made no effort to reschedule this appointment. I ended up going to another salon because they were able to fit me in. Nirvana never called to follow up to see if I wanted another appointment. I will probably stick with the new salon since it seems like Nirvana has plenty of business and doesn't need new customers.
Besides being an Aveda salon, it's all about Shawna here at Nirvana. She is uber creative and talent. She is so passionate about her work and is so thorough. And she is versatile; she takes great care of my husband and me.
The staff are funky and super friendly. Love the head massages!
Nirvana is a great salon! I have never been to a salon where everyone, and I mean everyone, is this friendly. On top of that, they are really great at what they do. I used to be very concerned about letting anyone other than Victoria do my hair- different people have different ideas. But over the last few years, several people at the salon have worked on my hair (Janis, Shawna, and Raymond) and all have done an outstanding job. I'm pretty comfortable letting anyone at the salon do my hair- I now know there is a professional standard and they all meet it! I always look forward to going here- they spoil you rotten! Love it!
Great cuts and styles here, friendly and professional stylists, and the best part is the aromatherapy head rub and the terrific head massage you get after the shampoo and rinse! Yes, two head massages even when just getting a normal trim! This is a great place to feel good about your hair and also just feel good while getting that cut! Nice service and small touches like serving hot tea when you come in (are all the fancy salons doing that nowadays?).
A place like this is heavily reliant on the quality and personality of the stylists so I hope the management and staff continues to strive for perfection in this area. They are doing great so far!
I go to Loft A2 for haircut (I love PJ), Asian place for digital perm (I don't love the Korean lady) but I come to Nirvana for Shawna to dye my hair. She understands my need for discreet haircoloring. A notch darker and lighter is just the way I like it. Shawna is also very honest, she'll give her opinion if she thinks you are being impractical. Recently, she gave me great caramel highlights that are not too loud but enough for me to giggle with delight when I catch a reflection of them every once in a while.
Nirvana is a small salon. It's relaxing and non-hectic. The Aveda color products don't irrate my scalp. It's always a relief when you don't shed scalp for a week after haircoloring. Parking is fairly easy but the place is a little hard to find since it's tucked behind the main street.
Disclaimer: Shawna is a personal friend thus people may perceive what I said as biased. I have to clarify that I am a person who will not lie or embellish the truth. Okay, besides to my mother. There's only so many excuses I can offer as to why I am not married yet (She doesn't understand "I don't want to" or "no one wants to marry me") I will lie until I find a bullshit reason she's satisfied with.
I love getting my hair done at Aveda. They use great products and Aveda is "earth friendly" too. I got one of my high school classes to participate in the "re-cap" program; Aveda took plastic bottle caps to recycle them and make bottles for their products. Shawna did my hair for my aunt's wedding and no other stylist has been able to re-create that look. I also had Raymond do my hair for my senior ball and he gave me some perfect pin-up style hair, better than the picture I brought in. Massive props.
Jessica is my favorite here at Nirvana, although I hear all the girls do give a fab experience! I've been able to experiment a little with Jessica on a few different styles and she always makes it great and I leave there relaxed and happy. Laure, the owner, I hear has just redone the salon to reflect the organic, green concept that her salon represents, now inside and out! Very cool for the environment and for us in it....thanks Laure! Check out this great place!
The aromatherapy scalp massage is pretty awesome. I was really happy with the cut, it's what I expected from a Aveda concept salon. Prices aren't cheap, but you do get what you pay for, and what you expect from a good salon.
It sorta helps that somebody attractive is going to be the one that makes you look more attractive (otherwise you question their taste), so ask for Eileen, she's really, really attractive (and super-duper cool) and will make you look (or at least feel) super-duper fly.
I go to Shawna for color and she is the best!!
I highly recommend her. Everyone is very nice and I especially love the free head massage with aromatherapy oils.
Nirvana is always a great, relaxing, and friendly experience. The scalp massage is wonderful. The staff is wonderful and professional. I have been going there for several years now and it is always nice to see the staff over the years; younger staff works up the ranks. It is nice to have a place that keeps up to date on current styles as well as edgier ones.
Laure' is the only one who can consistently cut my hair in the style I like but can also quickly assess whether a requested style will work with your current lifestyle and make changes accordingly.
Booking can be difficult with some stylists but with the new online reservation system makes it easy.
Love it! Love that they offer me a drink as soon as I step in. That they offer little pluses like aromatherapy treatments and massages. I love Aveda, of course. I love Raymond, he always makes me look bee-u-tee-ful and makes me feel like a million bucks. There's plenty of parking in the back. I will always come here as long as Raymond is there. If he leaves, I dunno what I'll do!!!
Ok things started off a little rocky here. I had an appointment with them that I made about 3 weeks previous. 3 of my friends had been here and rant and raved about the place. I have a hard time trusting someone with my hair and sense both my girlfriend's hair looked good I said sure let me try it out. My hair was super long and I was ready to let it go so I was SUPER anxious for the appointment.....so I showed up and the girl at the front desk said that my stylist Jessica Russo was not feeling well and had left and that she had been trying to reach me to let me know. I was a little pissed cause first of all I had to arrange a babysitter, drive from Milpitas and we all know gas prices are FN expensive, and like I said I was SUPER anxious....so it was really disappointing....WAH WAH WAH. No fault of the Jessica of course people get sick and whatnot I understand but the person that got me a little heated was the front desk chick.....she didn't have my # down right or my name and she seemed a little spacey. Come on its your job to make appointments....how hard is it to make sure you have correct information. YES I WAS UPSET! Could you tell?
Anyway so I had to reschedule for a few days later. Let me just say it was soooo worth the wait. I am so pleased with my hair. Jessica did an AWESOME job. I gave her a few pictures and basically let her decide what she thought would look good. My hair was down to my waist practically and now its a little past my shoulders. It feels so healthy, light and its so manageable and STYLISH! Besides her doing such a FABULOUS job....she is really sweet and patient....cause let me tell you my hair is not the easiest hair to handle....IT WAS A HOT MESS. I was there practically for 4 hours....so yea go see Jessica she will make you look & feel like a new woman!
Go with Raymond, he takes his time and the aromatherapy is so great you will fall asleep in the chair! My hair now looks healthy, he did just what I asked.
The salon is nice- pretty typical Aveda salon in terms of services/products,etc.
I had an unusually bad experience though, the woman who was cutting my hair ripped out my cartilage piercing. I realize that this mistake could happen anymore, and it was a genuine accident- but she kept cutting/styling my hair as I sat there in pain. They still charged me full price for the visit.
One of the first things you notice about this salon is the framed positive magazine write-ups are many years out of date. This should have tipped me off to the type of salon this would be.
I'm surprised this salon has been rated so well. The tiny waiting area is a bench by the front door and once you've checked in with the receptionist/salon manager you get assessing stares from all the stylists and clientele. Maybe it's because I was in running pants and a t-shirt? Personally, I never get dressed up for a cut/color. In fact I deliberately dress down because I tend to book these appointments on my day off.
The aromatherapy massage was nice in concept but unpleasant because of the scent I chose. The shampoo girl should have done a better job of explaining what the essential oils were instead of just asking me what I wanted. Once the stylist took over she spent approx 15min telling me how busy she was currently and going to be in the future because this wasn't her only job as she was going back to school. It was a big turn off and made me wonder how hard making an appointment with her in the future would be. She then made disparaging comments about how poorly my hair was cut. I muttered that I'd been searching for a good stylist for approx 2 years since my last stylist moved north. She did a decent job layering my hair, but spent the entire time talking to the salon manager in the mirror. I felt a bit like a dummy head. It wasn't the worst cut I've ever had and because I wanted to be fair I returned one more time for a wash and blow out which was scheduled with another stylist as mine didn't work that day. Long story short, I do a better job letting my hair air dry than she did blowing it out. Overall, unimpressive and the salon didn't earn any more return visits.
I've gotten my hair highlighted & cut there by Shawna twice now, & I always get lots of compliments on my hair in addition to being happy with the results. In fact, just the other day, someone I see occasionally at work liked my highlights so much she asked where I got them done! The first time I went, I didn't know that there was an aromatherapy scalp massage included; it was quite a pleasant surprise! Note: I tend to be pretty low maintenance...I like my hair to be wash, comb, & go on a daily basis & had virgin hair until 2000 when I first started getting highlights. I also only go about every 3-4 months when the length & roots start bugging me.
Their products (Aveda) have nice but subtle scents. Besides what they use on me at my appointments, I got to sniff some of their other merchandise at their 'holiday party,' which I ended up attending because I wanted to something relaxing to do one weekend when I was on my 30-minute radius tether. Small-world experience coming up: While talking to the woman who gave me a hand massage at the holiday party, we discovered that her stepsister & I went to high school together (even the same class)! Crap, I recognize the name, but now I need a yearbook to look up a picture to go with the name, & who knows where my yearbook is at my parents' house. But I digress.
Anyway, if you're looking for the place, it's actually across the street from Dolce Spazio Dessert Cafe, not directly on the street, but on the back side of the building facing a parking lot.
This salon was a big disappointment for me. My old roommate used to go here to get his hair done so I thought I would go check it out for myself. I had to make an appointment about a month in advance and I was really looking forward to it.
I arrived to get my hair cut a little shorter and layered and have a few low lights put in. The stylist doing my hair was running a little late and was in a bit of a rush (she kept talking to the other girls about where everyone was going out later that night). Once everything was trimmed and colored it was nearly closing time and she left my hair pretty damp. I was gently rushed towards the end so that everyone could go home. When I finally got home my fiance laughed and asked if I had actually PAID for that. I grumbled a 'yes' and then proceeded to finish drying my hair. I was REALLY QUITE SHOCKED to notice that she did not cut my hair evenly and that the shape was wrong... it was not quite a mullet but it is a good descriptor word for what I had on my head. It looked like I let a five year old cut my hair. The next morning I had to go to work and yes, everyone noticed. It was not exactly the kind of acknowledgment I wanted for my hair given the price I paid to have it done. I tried to keep it up until I could rush over (ASAP!!!) to a tried and true salon I knew of in San Jose. Sadly my beautiful long locks became a very short French bob. At least hair grows back... live and learn. This happened a while ago and I can not remember the name of the girl who cut it. (tall girl with short, dark brown, curly hair) The manager of the salon was really rude about the whole situation and I never did get any money back.
Even if my hair had not been butchered I still would not have given this salon a glowing review. Most of the staff members were snotty, the salon was too small for the amount of people in it, the air is permeated with chemicals, and I am really not a big fan of Aveda products.
If you DO happen to visit this salon, make sure you get an EARLY appointment.
I went to Shawna. She is very good at picking the right color for you. I had high lights done and a simple layer cut and I absolutely love it. I would have gave 4 or 5 stars but her assistant girl stained my collared shirt! AGH im so pissed it was $80 from BCBG. now it is totally ruined!
I've been going to the same hair dresser for twelve years and he's in Sacramento. I've been driving to Sacramento to get my hair cut for 8 years because I was too aftraid to try anyone new. I decided to be brave and have Janis cut my hair after I heard some rave reviews about her from my friends. She is AWESOME. She is patient, gives REAL advice on hair styles, etc. and best of all, is a fantastic stylist!
I love the aromatherapy, scalp massages and wine, too!!
Pretty small and cozy little place, very low profile and relaxing. Not a loud and hectic scene like some other salons I've been to. I've seen Christine a few times for a cut and style and she's pretty good for the price. I've paid a lot more at other salons for cuts that aren't really that great. Nirvana has really friendly staff and if you can get a junior stylist you can get a less-expensive cut that's still pretty good. The products are heaven; I think they're worth the money. My hair always looks nice and smells nice when I leave
THANK YOU...Finally a salon that gets me!!!! I have gone to so many salons in Los Gatos over the years and now I have the hair I've been searching for. The service was great and my stylist was awesome. I liked the fact that the salon was small...not too over crowded and noisy. I absolutly loved the massage after my color...lavender oil is the best!!! My stylist gave me a makeup touch up and a hand massage for free! I highly recommend this salon to everyone! The parking is good, nice tea but I opted for the wine. I will be going there again soon.
I would give a 0 star if I can....esp for the money they charge...vs the service they give...
The only good thing about the place is the product is nice ..in fragrance....thats it... the Sytlist act like they work on celebrites all the time...i had medium long hair and wanted a short cut and color..I was coloring my hair for the 1st time and was nervous about what i wanted....first I called in for a consult.... I drove some 15-20 miles to get there....I was shown to Raymond...it seemed like he was not greatly interested in a consult...he showed some magazines and asked me to come back with the kinda of styles I wanted and also the color....thats it...
I spent a week thinking about it...later took copies of color and style I likes from magazines/internet.....set up an appt...they ask for ur credit card and charge you some 140$ ...if you dont show up...they charge you half (!!!!) of your fees...!!....
anyway...when i went in for my appt..he took in half a glance..and said he understood what I wanted... 2 hrs later I come out... with my hair color looking similar...to when I went in and an hair cut.- a basic bob- , a supercut person could have given me one...(.I agree it was me who selected the color..but as an EXPERT...he could/should have given me advice on what would loook good against my skin)..
I didnt like my harcut all that much...but thouhgt would give it a try to see how it would be on a day2day basis... it was a disaster....my hair was flat most the time... i could not repeat the hair salon effect of gorgeous hair...When I went in I specfically said ..i dint want a cut that required constant blow dry/ heat etc......my fair is thin and fine..and it would damage easily..so i wanted a somewhat funky cut..that woudnt look like I never combed my hair..either way way my first was bad..and I paid $180 for it...GOD!
then I had my color touch-up to go after a few weeks....since I had a "herbal" color done..i didnt want to go to another salon and have a totally different color on it...so I went again....to Raymond....I told him that i didnt like my haircut and wanted something a lil edgier....no bobs this time...he pointed me to an another sytlist and asked if wanted something similar to hers... I said it was nice..but added that I didnt want it that edgier...and also a hairsytle that i can maintain on a daily basis....half way thru is when I realised that he is mostly like a BOB guy...his BOB cut is amazing( on medium lenght hair)...but he doesnt know much about layered cut....he had almost finished with my cut...and then he calls over an another stylist ans asks her if he should cut "this much or this much"...she says that his length is wrong..and does the needed correction for the LAST layer of the cut...so what do you expect...:)..another disaster cut....and asymmetic cut in the front ..the back of the head-longer than necessary lenghts for a short hair......it looked liked a guys who let his hair grow for weeks......and they price they charge for touch up is $70 (he initally said my haircut was short but charged me for medium color...that too for TOUCH_UP) ...outrageous...!! and $45 for cut...total some $120 with tax.....My advice...choose another salon...or u would pay heavy for some warm tea they provide when u enter...
and my hair color....not many actaully know i have my hair colored...thats how it is...
p.s: the wait time even after an appt is also outrageous...
i love this place! i have been going here for years. their stylists really know what they are doing. they listen to their clients and make the entire experience wonderful. on top of that, they serve tea or whatever and give you an aromatherapy scalp massage!
