a sushi place around this area thats decent yay! i don't have to travel far whoo. um...the place looks pretty nice, the service has gotten better i'm guessing from the other reviews. The people there were very attentive and observant. always filling tea, and the food came out pretty fast.
We came to eat out for my mama's birthday, ordered 4 rolls and a dinner combo.
winter wonderland i think is the only realllyy goood one where i'd remember to get again.
lion king was MEHHH, i lovee baked ones...but that one didn't taste all that great.
the pink dragon and watever the other was....was ok....had eel...cuz my parents liked it...but the flavor was okay...
the dinner box was so simple..not worth getting...pricing for everything was okayy actually, not that expensive..
oh and i got the tuna poki, lil tuna pieces and pickled cucumber and seaweed salad.....not badd pretty goood.
all was like 75 or so for 5 ppl, mehhh i'd come back once in awhile though. not too shaby
It's a relatively new sushi spot in the Sunset, so there's going to be a learning curve.
I've ordered a total of 3 different rolls. (Dragon, Spider, and RockN) It's no better nor worse than other spots in the City, but would have to say that I was a little disappointed with their Ahi Poke. Was very overdone with the cucumbers and the seasoning. Literally had to wipe off each of the ahi pieces and re-dipped into a clean dish of soy sauce.
Hard to tell about the service since we were only 1 of 3 group of patrons. Service seems attentive.
This neighborhood was in need of a casual/nice restaurant. Most of the places in this hood are a little drab or just serve a bunch of weird stuff.
This place has some very creative things on the menu and the staff is really nice.
They may be a little slow on the service side... but that I think that comes with them being friendly and talking to everyone.
The prices are not too bad and everything we ate was fresh and delicious.
The chicken nuggets appetizer... although not Japanese or sushi .. was really yummy ... the sauce they give you to dip it in ... really good.
I give extra points for being an oasis in an otherwise restaurantless area.
Came here a few weeks ago, when they were still kinda remodeling everything. The place is definitely a step up from the old restaurant that was here... (i think it was an old mafia front), BUT this place is definitely hopping.
As for the food, me and the gf had some sashimi and some sushi. I don't remember what since it was literally almost a month ago, but the sashimi felt like it had just literally been taken out of the freezer an hour before, and the sushi, although good... could have been better.
Granted this is a new restaurant, and you have to give them time to perfect everything. In it's first month, it seems to be doing that, getting better as time goes on, at least from reading the reviews here. I'll give it another shot somewhere down along the line, but from what I remember it's just ok.
However they did have some grilled fish dishes that smelled wonderful, and seemed really appetizing. I'm probably going to go for that next time I come around.
Fantastic food! Absolutely love the beautiful sculpted wooden sushi bar. I was also pleased with both the sake selection and with one of the waiter's expertise on sake, making recommendations to us. Ninki is really out of the way for us, but we will continue to come for the wonderful food, the setting and super personalized service. Great prices, as well.
We decided to try this place for dinner after considering other nearby options. I'm glad we did, as the food definitely surpassed our expectations. I ordered the salmon teriyaki combo and he had the yakiniku, and both dishes were very well done. We also tried a sushi roll, and was pretty much amazed at how delicious it was, really comparable to higher end sushi bars. I'm someone who did not appreciate sushi before, but my mind has definitely been changed. We'll definitely be making this one of our regular spots in the sunset. Friendly staff too~.
Like your standard run of the mill, Chinese owned sushi place. I consider this a place that you should go only for lunch. For the dinner cost, there are a lot of better Sushi places. 8 dollars is a good pricing for the Bento box and you get to chose which 2 items you want off the list. There is also a cheap Sushi Combo for people that are on budget. For 5.50 no tax, it includes California Roll and Dynamite Roll.
New Japanese restaurant in the Sunset w/ GREAT rolls!!! I am a fan :)
We stumbled upon this place after my friend passed by it and wanted to try it out. Great decision! It's nicer than your average Japanese restaurant and it's nice to have more dining options in the Sunset.
We had the sake sashimi, Cherry Blossom roll, Red & White roll, and... a roll with Wasabi in the name. All were deeeeelish! The sashimi was very fresh and melted in our mouths. The rolls were beautifully plated and the ingredients used were top notch.
Luckily there was a table open when we walked in but it was definitely busy. I have a feeling business is going to start booming soon so come early or make reservations!
Nice little neighborhood joint a couple blocks from Dragon Lounge. I stopped by for lunch the other day and was pleasantly surprised. The service was great, good atmosphere and the food was good.
Ninki is supper easy to find, and located in a great location. If your in the mood for sushi, I would definitely suggest stopping by Ninki
Came here yesterday for lunch. The rice is not very sticky. Tea is good. Spicy tuna roll is good. Chicken katsu is ok. the green wall totally blocks the tv. the menu was very clean and not oily and sticky. 8 bucks for a bento box is pretty normal. nothing special about this place.
3.5 stars.
the real big plus is that it's right around corner from my place, yay. went in last nite for dinner & ordered 5 nigiris = 10pcs of sushi + a small sapporo = $32 w/tip & tax just for myself. Albeit a little pricey for a one person dinner, I decided to pay extra for convenience rather than driving to pick up sushi from my usual place.
overall, service was attentive. food was ok. my nigiri was fresh except for the saba...that one tasted a lil' fish funky but i ate it anyways since i had to pay for it. ikura was fresh yay!
their lunch bento is better priced than dinner bento...actually, their lunch anything is better priced. rolls are damn pricey for their portion but i guess they claim it as the "standard" in this day & age..whatever.
it was a quiet wednesday nite w/only at most 10 patrons in that place & about 6 of them knew the owner or something...good luck to their business picking up (?)
A coworker told me about this new sushi place in the Sunset, and I went to check it out today. I left with mixed feelings about this place...
The outside looked nice... a very brightly lit sign made it hard to miss. It's wedged between Marco Polo and 8 Immortals, and I can not for the life of me remember what used to be here. The place is fairly small - a quick 5-second scan around the room, and you'll see everything there is to see: a few chairs at the sushi bar with a big flat-screen TV behind it to your left and about 10 tables to the right. Tonight, there was a party of 20 in the back, leaving about 5 tables of 4 free. We wrote our names on the wait list and were seated in about 10 minutes.
The prices are very reasonable - sushi rolls averaging from $8 to $10; 5 pieces of salmon sashimi for $9; dinner combos for $13 (includes 2 items, miso soup, salad, rice, and 6 pcs of gyoza). We ordered the philly roll, pink dragon roll, 49er roll, lion king roll; gyoza; sizzling steak platter; and 5 pcs sake (salmon sashimi).
The gyoza and sizzling steak platter came out first. The gyoza was ok - nothing special. The sizzling steak platter... Let's just say it smelled a lot better than it tasted. We ordered it mainly because we had seen a sizzling platter come out while we were waiting for a table, and the aroma had sucked us in. Our platter smelled great too... but the steak was way way overdone and dry. Boooo....
It was another 20 minutes before we got to eat anything else. At one point, the waitress came over and asked if we were still missing anything. Umm... yes... how about our rolls???
As we continued to wait, one of my friends started picking at the steak again and made a comment that he was desperate. I think that pretty much said it all about how "good" the steak was and how long we had to wait for the rest of our food.
Why, then, am I giving this place 4 stars? Because the saving grace of this place... is its rolls. Not super expensive... and just plain good. The sashimi is fresh and melts in your mouth. The 4 rolls we ordered were all equally good. Plus, they gave us free salad and green tea ice cream for making us wait, and the owner came by to apologize as well. I guess having a party of 20 come in unexpectedly can be pretty overwhelming... and it's only their second week in business...
I am definitely wiling to give them another chance and to try out their other rolls.
Great sushi! Got to this place right when it opened for dinner, the service was good, attentive but not overbaring. The sushi was fresh and artfully prepared. They have a few of their own original rolls, all of which looked appetizing. Also their prices are fair, I've paid much more in small towns for sushi that wasn't as good as this place. I will definitely be going back.
The decor is simple, but comfortable. I was greeted by friendly smiles, and hot tea came quickly, but afterwards service began to go downhill. I was confused as to who was going to take my order because there were two servers and one sushi chef in front of me. Since the sushi chef didn't ask what I wanted, I assumed that one of the servers will come and take my order. They didn't come, so after a while the sushi chef took our order.
I ordered the Nigiri Delux, which was just a plate of nigiri, and there was nothing delux about it. The fish was fresh and yummy, but I guess I started on the wrong end of the plate. I finished with the ebi and it was slightly rubbery and all I could taste was the vinegar.
Unagi nigiri-luke warm.......
Lion King Roll-loved the fact that it was not over sauced and did not cover up the flavors of the fresh cucumber and salmon.
Tonkatsu-came out last.......I was done with my Nigiri delux, and more than half way on the lion king roll and the tonkatsu was nowhere to be seen while all the other tables had all of their cooked food. The only reason why this dish came was because the sushi chef noticed me staring from the end of the sushi bar all the way to the other end where the kitchen was. I was unable to get the attention of both servers, but I guess my continuous stare at the kitchen caught the sushi chef's attention. They checked on the order, a few random words of chinese was exchanged between both servers, and the sushi chefs, and then it was relayed to the kitchen, and then an irritated server came out of the kitchen and said something to the sushi chef in front of me (AWKWARD). Then I asked about the tonkatsu and was interrupted midsentence from the sushi chef "tonkatsu is coming".....there was no apology for the delay, there were no constant check ups on how we were doing while the couple next to me was checked on every ten minutes. To top it off, no tea refill! The server only talked to me when they gave me menus and then the check at the end.
Overall:
decor-clean, and comfortable
fish-yummy (except for the luke warm unagi and vinegar/rubbery ebi)
service-needs a lot of work
would not be a restaurant that I crave for.
Finally a decent place to eat on Taraval! I went at my lunch break and had the bento box. For 8 bucks there were 4 large slices of california roll, large enough that it was hard to fit the whole thing in my mouth, two large pieces of nigiri, salad and miso, not bad! The albacore melted in my mouth, the chef came out and told me they sliced it from the fish about 20 minutes earlier, awesome! Looks like this place is going to be a great addition to the neighborhood.
Perhaps this place deserves a second visit to solidify my rating.
Went here yesterday, ordered a couple specialty rolls and an entree. The sushi was loosely rolled, not tight enough. The rice lacked stickiness and flavor. I noticed that the cucumber in my rolls was not peeled, that was a turn off. The wasabi is on the weak side.
I ordered beef sukiyaki. The meat slices were too thick and tough. The broth didn't have enough flavor to it.
My friend ordered a chicken katsu/tempura bento. For $13, they should plated the food so that it looks like you are getting more, because it just looked like about 7 chicken pieces thrown on an Ikea plate.
The establishment was a former Salvadoreno restaurant, and prior to that, an Italian restaurant. The inner decor is not consistent of a Japanese restaurant, but if you are there just to eat, this shouldn't bother you.
The place is fairly new, I'll give them time to work out their kinks and flavor up. A second visit is in order
Excellent sushi, Great service, well priced and generally a nice place to be! I'm no sushi expert but the rolls are as good as any i've ever had. The 'Winter Wonderland' is phenomenal, as is the Lion King!
Have visited twice in the past 3 weeks and NINKI gets 5 stars for both occasions. Great new sushi restaurant on taraval, spread the word, my new local!
staff is friendly, service was prompt though there were a number of large groups on a Saturday night. pretty standard roll variations but well executed. no corkage is a nice touch (we brought a bottle of sake) and you can head to marco polo next door for dessert.
The food was excellent for the price, but they did not look like the pictures on the menu. This place just opened, and there's still a lot of confusion with the orders. The service was friendly, but horrible.
