I had been going to Faith since high school whenever I was in town, and she's great. She dyed my hair an awesome auburn color with highlights before I left for college in LA (almost a decade ago- wow, I'm old. Well, relative to when I was 17. Nevermind.) and it was fabulous.
I just moved back to the area recently though and made a last-minute appointment with Elita to completely re-sculpt my hair, as I had been getting it cut straight across while I was away, due to my apparent fear of style. [Sidenote: I wonder if you can't work at Nimbus unless you have a totally rad first name? If I were going to work there, I would have to first change my name to... Megha. Or Hotpants McPooperstein.] I told her I wanted something potentially edgy but professional, and easy to straighten, as I have frizzy, yet wavy, not curly, hair.
See, I have hair that would be a dream in the 80's. I imagine that people would give me cars and money for free or ask me to take their children to give them a better life because my hair was just so damn awesome. In the 00's, however, this hair is an evil succubus that destroys my life and that of everyone it touches. It's like the serpentine locks of Medusa, only frizzier.
So I brought in a bunch of pictures of differing styles to give Elita an idea of what type of style I was looking for - what genre, if you will. I like my hair to fit a particular GENRE. At the time, my hair was in the "comedy" genre, and I needed that to be changed. Elita looked at the pictures, got an idea, and gave me the perfect layered haircut with side bangs that is really easy to wash, straighten, and really just go outside without looking like a hair monster if the weather gets humid. SIDEBANGS. Now, because of the way my hair is cut, it actually looks like I'm put together. It is important to maintain this horribly false illusion.
Not only did she give me a great hairstyle, but the time flew because she was really easy to talk to, and interesting. Small talk while getting my hair cut can be awkward, but this was not the case with Elita, which was a huge plus.
Currently, I don't have any good pictures of my new hair on Yelp, as my camera courteously decided to take a poop. I'll put a few up that I took of myself sans flash on my camera phone. When I read reviews of salons, I always check Yelpers' pictures to see if I like their hair. That's right, Yelpers, I look at you; and you know you can't hide that mullet from me. SIDEBANGS.
Once a month for six months I'd come here to get my hair done. The service was awesome. Friendly/ Welcoming Atmosphere.
My hair stylist was Shane and she was Amazing, she knew what she was doing and she knew what I wanted! The $55 was worth it!!!!
I loved coming here, it was my favorite salon of choice to get my hair done..........
Why two stars?
Heres Why........
I experienced a time (which was my last time there) when I called and made an appointment for a Saturday afternoon with one of the girls who did the booking (can't remember her name) and I told her that I wanted Shane to do my hair and she said that Shane wasn't going to be in that day, So she asked if she can book me with Sarah and i said yeah that's fine (Horrible Decision!!!). When I get there Saturday afternoon and I said I'm here for an appointment with Sarah, who do I see working there that day?..... Yes, it was Shane. I told the girl at the front desk that I thought Shane wasn't working today and she looked at me said that Sarah wasn't working that day. I see Shane walking up to the front desk after she was finished with here customer and asked if there was a problem and I told her that one of the girls booking appointments told me that Shane wasn't working today and they booked me with Sarah. After this whole mess went down Shane checked the booking schedule herself and to find out there was no appointment written down for her and Sarah was off work. I showed Shane that I wrote down the date, time and who it was with while on the phone talking with the girl about my appointment. At this point there was so much drama that I left and never got my hair done there again.
Never do over the phone scheduling for Nimbus, Go in yourself and make the appointment personally!!!!
I have been to many salons and have tried several people and I must say I am VERY HAPPY today!! I had my bob cut trimmed about a month ago with Jamie and it was great. I saw a shorter cut in a magazine of Diablo Cody and was not sure if it would be the right cut for me so I went in today and consulted with Jamie and we decided to give it a try and it looks AMAZING!! I have also been doing my own color and it has been way to dark for my liking so we did a bit of color and she softened it up alot and it look really good!!! The prices are also very reasonable. If you want a stylist that takes her time and is truely interested in what you want to have done give Jamie a call!!!
Love, love, LOVE Nimbus! Called wanting to come in after venting rage and frustration with my hair and got an appointment to come in half an hour later.
Angela... or was it Jamie? is the best stylist. Obviously very dedicated to the craft/art of cutting hair... she approached my hot mess of a head of hair (think a cross between Victoria's Secret and wild jungle hair, and you've got me) with no judgment whatsoever and transformed it into a sleek, classy, well-groomed shiny neat mane. She spent over an hour just cutting, trimming, thinning out my layers. Then she dried and straightened my hair, which took a long time but I have such a thick mane, and then thinned it out some more. I love this approach because she was so exact and precise, ensuring that I got the best cut possible rather than thinning it out wet and not following through with the precision. She also sat down with me and discussed how I wanted my bangs trimmed/cut, making sure it was exactly what I wanted.
I looked fabulous. I felt fabulous. I've never felt so sure or so great after a cut, and I got TONS of compliments on it from friends and co-workers, even from strangers! What I really liked was that she didn't push any products on me, and only described and showed them to me when I asked what she was putting in, and what worked best for my hair specifically. They also use all Aveda products, which I LOVE.
The cut was $45 and after tip, $55. Totally well-worth it. I will be coming back!
The fifth star is for Sheri G. She is the best stylist, the most committed to Aveda to the point of going on her own dime each year to Aveda's corporate events, and she is a really nice person. The prices are not cheap, but she can work wonders.
I also love the location and the space is cool. The rest of the staff is so-so. Some are really helpful and offer water and so on, and others..well you get the idea. Still, it's worth it.
I heard great reviews about this place, so I made an appointment. I heard they gave great head massages too!
45 mins later and 170.00 lighter in my wallet, I walked out feeling like a wet dog. Just a cut.
I didn't even get a blow dry for 170.00!
I wanted my Vidal Sasson moment and all I got was a wet mop.
Nimbus is my new salon of choice. Yes, guys can have a salon of choice. I've had a few different stylists over time as people move on to other states and what not. Prices are much easier to swallow than at Juut and I think they're on par in terms of quality. The salon itself has a hipper, less upscale feel to it, kind of like a loft, but it adds to the fun I think.
For me a haircut runs about $40-$50, depending on who's doing the cutting. I can recommend Angela Mackenzie or her co-worker Sheri. They're both fun, real nice, give good cuts, and have been at Nimbus for awhile. I really don't think you can go wrong with either of these two.
Some of the people here are only so-so, as I've had some bad cuts before (that person is now gone), so I think in terms of consistency, it's probably not as good as Juut. But I'm paying half the price and getting the same thing and that's always a good thing.
Simply put: D rocks! Not only is she the owner, but she is a hair genius. Her method of hi-lighting includes painting panels throughout the hair, which looks great when you put your hair up.
I am super scared of new stylists, but trusted D after a consultation, plus she's been doing a friend's hair for years, making her a risk worth taking. I'm glad I did because my color has never looked better (not to toot my own horn, but I actually love it).
More later, but basically I'm stoked that I have a new place to go for my hair that isn't stuffy, boring, or wannabee LA, like most of Los Gatos.
I have been going to Nimbus for 6 years. Angela is the only one to see. She is the best and won't let you down. Plus, it is in a great location and whenever I go I have an excuse to go to Icing on the Cake and Banana Republic!
I highly recommend getting your hair done by Serina. She is totally cute/ fun and at the same time very professional and great at what she does. She's my go-to girl for cut, color, updo's, and she even does make-up. To sum her up in one world, fabulous.
Used to go to Daniel, too bad I'm broke now.
NEVER did my hair wrong. Assistant Sivan was really good too.
Daniel, you were the only man who could ever get my bangs right. One day I will be able to afford you again.
Oh, and they carry Aveda products- found the HOLY GRAIL of volumizer here. I call it Hair Crack. It's a light feeling non-smelly white powder that you shake on your roots called "the potion" that instantly lifts, absorbs oil, and can totally fake a back-comb bouffant. It's expensive but totally worth it. THANK YOU DANIEL FOR SHOWING ME THE WHITE POWDER!
Linda kicks A$$! She has been stylin my hair for more than 5 years now. She now does my daughter's hair! Well worth it and she is great at what she does. I always get questions on who does my hair and I am always ready to brag about her and send them to her!
I went to Nimbus for the first time last week. I was referred to Laura by a friend. I have been looking for a hair stylist for years and have not been satisfied so I started letting my hair grow out. Laura was awesome. She was so fun to talk to. When I sat down for my appointment I told her that I wanted something cute and sassy. I gave her really no direction and put my faith that she knew what she was doing. And at the end of my haircut and highlights she proved she has the hair smarts. She did an amazing job and I will continue to go to her. Thanks Laura.
I went to this place for years. I tolerated the very unprofessional atmosphere when the price was reasonable, but as the prices rose, I realized that I could get the same or better cut elsewhere. The cut that broke the camel's back was the one where the stylist's boyfriend sat all slouched over in perfect view and basically kept telling her to get a move on. Seems they had somewhere else to be and I was slowing them down. Sorry about that. So long Nimbus.
I enjoy this salon, the location near tasty coffee, and the hip-but-not-pretentious atmosphere. They are an Aveda concept salon, and I really like Aveda products. All of this is nice. But what makes this place 5 stars are Sheri Garrison and Angela MacKenzie.
Sheri has been cutting my hair for more than 10 years now, and I've never had a cut I didn't love. I have lived in lots of different places, paid much more for a cut, but never had one that compared with Sheri. So, I travel to her, from wherever I live. I can sit in her chair, and tell her about how I want the length, how I'm feeling about my hair right now, and the things that I see that I like, and she just knows what to do. Magic, I tell you. No, really, it's Sheri's amazing intuition and communication skills. She tunes into to every part of you, not just your words. Then, she follows with a scalp massage that will make all your stress disappear and a wash that is comforting and pampering. Amazing. I always feel like a supermodel when I walk out of here, flipping and tossing my hair. Now, here's the kicker. They next day, and a week later, my hair continues to look good. While I can't exactly replicate what Sheri does, I can get pretty darn close, so I'm not dependent on monthly cuts just to feel good.
Angela has an artistic sense about her, and her up-dos are so non-cheesy. She did the hair for my wedding, and everyone was thrilled (especially me). She presents current hairstyles in a wearable, attractive way.
Sheri and Angela have that perfect balance of professionalism and expertise balanced with intuition and personableness (not sure that's a word, but they're really personable).
I couldn't recommend them more highly.
I give this place a five only because of the skill, creativity and quality of Angela Mackenzie. I highly recommend her if you are a person, like me, who admittedly knows nothing about hair styles and want to go to someone who will just make your hair look good without having to think about it. :)
She is able to use her creativity to provide a hair cut and color that suits me. I go in and my hair is a wreck and come out with a beautiful hair style. She just says - you should do this length, style, color - and I just nod. I totally trust her because she provides a custom hair style that fits my face shape, personality, style and hides some of my flaws.
The salon itself is like an unfinished loft and really isn't that impressive (once the hot water was out during the shampoo). There is only street parking which sucks on weekend mornings in downtown los gatos. And, the work that Angela does totally makes up for these small shortcomings.
The only reason I would ever sign up and write a review on Yelp is because of Sara Hines. She was from a different salon and I am following her to this one at Nimbus because she is THAT good. I've been to many great hairstylists ranging from very affordable to very expensive and I am sticking to Sara because 1) she does a great job listening to you, 2)can interpret a hairstyle you pick out from a magazine to suit your face so you'd look incredible, 3) doesn't act like a superstar, even though she's incredibly good with color and cut, and 4) still within my budget (and believe me, still have the works!). I only hope she'll still fit me in once she gets even more popular after my recommendations!
ahhh... daniel...
when i leave his chair it's at least three days before i wash my hair again. he's effortless, talented, attentive and completely entertaining. i have naturally curly hair, which in itself is difficult to cut correctly and he always does a smashing job.
so worth it!
I'm actually writing this review for my gf who USED to go here until today. Poor customer service and unproffessional employees will be the reason of this poor review. On a couple of occasions her stylist was late by over 15 minutes- Sarah is her name. Also, on the SAME day of an appointment a receptionist called to tell her that her stylist was not going to be in that day...and they can reschedule her in the week- during the day! Did not even give the option that possibly another stylist could fit her in at any point on that day. For some reason my gf continued to go there even though she was flaked on and stylist was late for every appointment. Also, the stylist kept going over to another patron during her appointments. Then today as my girlfriend was looking for parking in front of the salon (she was like 5 minutes late), she got a call saying that she was late and they could not accomodate her at all today as next client is already there...but could reschedule in the week- during the day! WOW... lame pure and simple.
