Neighborhood: Queen AnneThis is such a cute little place to have a pastry and some coffee. I work a block away and go there when I need a little afternoon treat. My favorite pastry is the snitter. It's delicious when heated up slightly...custardy and cinnamony...mmm! The potato and sarah bernard are equally good. The coffee is made well and not sickenly sweet as another place near my work. Their italian sodas are mostly cream with a little bit of soda. Not how I like it, but they have interesting flavors like mango and pomergranate. Oh, and if stopping by for lunch, try the chicken salad sandwich (when available). It's probably one of the best chicken salads I've ever had. The staff is friendly, helpful, and patient with people like me who take forever to decide what they want.

Nice people, clean store, good coffee, kid friendly, dog friendly, psyche friendly, excellent pastries, great cookies, juice.
There you have it. The place is just plain nice. The people are nice, the food is nice, the atmosphere is nice, the neighborhood is nice.
I'm talking nice with a capital nice.
It's nice here. And you feel nice after you've been there.
Are you out of sorts? Maybe you're actually just mean? Maybe you are a bitch on steroids? Well, Nielsen's Authentic Danish Pastries will turn your sneer into a leer, they'll take the power out of your glower, they'll take the itch out of your bitch.
They are better than any mood altering drug.
So get your cranky behind over to Queen Anne and down a few pastries at Neilsen's and make the world a happier place.
(and this was my 100th review)

I used to live right near Nielsen's and didn't consider myself much of a pastry person, but after one visit here with a huge pastry fan, I was sold. The pastries are incredible, fresh and delicious. Most of them are of a cinnamon, custard, almond variety. But everything I have tried was outstanding! The flat one with custard and cinnamon is my favorite. I am not crazy about the interior, but there is plenty of seating and they make espressos as well.

A charming little pastry place. They have a bunch of pastry I had not seen before. It must be the Danish influence here.
It is a comfortable neighborhood place to sit and enjoy an espresso and a treat. They type of cozy place where old men read newspapers and the locals stop in for a cup.

The only bad thing about Nielson's is that it's so close to my house. Since I moved to Uptown three years ago, I have been dashing to this place with my pooch to get oatmeal raisin cookies, snitters (flat cinnamon rolls), and double chocolate chip cookies. Nielson's is completely dog infatuated. They take pictures of local pups that come in with their owners and post them below the cash register. They'll even give your furry friend a doggy biscuit.
Their cakes have marzipan frosting and are truly decadent. You can get a slice from their cooler. I highly recommend it.
I definitely recommend that you go early if you want the oatmeal cookies. They always tend to sell out early. I brought a mixed half dozen of the cookies to share with my parents when we last climbed Mt Pilchuck. My mother's comments were ''Oh.....this is the best cookie ever." She was eating the double chocolate chip and seemed very enthused.

"John Nielsen's Authentic Danish Pastries"
I'm not saying s*** about this place... I don't want it to get packed when I go there for my daily dose of... uh... butter, cream, custard,... sandwiches, home-made soup...
Try the $2.75 "potato"... it's like a MEGA cream-puff! =)

Nielsen's could be a serious danger to my bank account and waistline since I work a block away and I swear they pipe out that intoxicating cinnamon scent. Nevertheless, I ventured in to pick up some pastries for my sweetie for an indulgent weekend of pastry and Gossip Girl reruns. Oh dear! One bear claw and cheese danish later, and I'm back off the Nielsen's wagon. Yum! How will I resist temptation when I'm back in the 'hood on Monday? I hear the kringle calling me...

If there is one thing that brings me back to this place it is their potato. It's a Bavarian cream filled treat with a marzipan outer shell dusted with cocoa powder. This caloric bomb is definitely my Kryptonite!
I don't make it to the bakery as often as I used to which is funny because I live on QA. I know they have been on QA for years now, but I really loved their old Downtown Seattle location off of 3rd & Union. For those that remember, they were located just a few doors down from The Squire Shop.

If life were short, per the doctor's orders, I'd request 2 dozen of the marzipan potatoes and eat them on the spot, that would do me in for sure. Okay this pastry, well they only look like potatoes, other than that they taste nothing like what they resemble.
This heaven sent concoction of creamy goodness is a cream puff shell, filled with custard and whipped cream, surrounded by a ever so thin marzipan shell and lightly dusted with cocoa powder. Sheer delight and heaven sent.....drool....drool....drool... oh and they serve other stuff as well.....pa....tay....toe.....it's calling me.....

Is it just me or is "happy hour" at the Bakery unusual?? Yup, from 2:30 to 3:30 Tues - Fri, if you buy an espresso drink, you get a FREE pastry. So much for watching my waistline...danish pastries here I come!! Brilliant. I'm not sure why this place doesn't get yelped more...I guess this means its my personal hidden gem in Queen Anne.
Today I went out to read at a coffee shop and decided to try Uptown Espresso (given the glowing yelp reviews) and was forced to leave because there was no where to sit. I exited, walked two blocks over to Nielsen's and decided I now believe in fate because if Uptown hadn't been so busy I probably wouldn't have found my new favorite bakery/espresso place!
The cafe gets tons of natural light, the walls are a buttery yellow that feels as welcoming as your mom's kitchen, and the tables and chairs are white and light colored wood. The girl who helped was so genuine and sweet as well (none of that fake sugary sweetness that dominates the baristas in green aprons). But really, the pastries...SHEER bliss. Don't be scared of the "potato" it's in no way related to anything even remotely vegetablish.
Seating was plentiful, the music was soft and full of my favorite (death cab, bright eyes, etc). There are couches and tables--good for small groups and kids. Everyone who came in seemed to be a regular and this created a sweet homey vibe that made me want to stay all day. Unfortunately, they close at 3 on Mondays and Saturdays and are closed on Sundays. The only drawback: my cappuccino was very good, just not rich on foam (my pet peeve...I didn't order a latte after all...).

This is a great place for a light lunch of soup and salad as I work in Queen Anne Square. And of course the pastry potatos. It looks like Im not the only one who likes the "potato". They have national geographics to read too.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod. I recently became addicted to Nielsen's. This is a good thing...and a bad thing, since it's less than TWO BLOCKS from where I live.
Every pastry is made with organic butter, and oh boy, can you taste it. They have a great variety of flavors for their danishes including prune, which I sampled, and dang it was good! Who knew? Their cinnamon rolls are soft and gooey, but not totally oozing with icing, which I prefer.
If you want a gut-buster (sort of in a good way) might I suggest a 'Snitter?' Yes, I know. It sounds like some sort of code word for a certain part of the, ahem, female anatomy, but good lord. It's soooooo gooooood. They take their cinnamon roll dough and roll it out flat, cover it in cinnamon (of course), and then they run a line of custard down one side, and a line of icing down the other. Oh. My. God. I ate one and got a stomachache. But I didn't care.
It's cheaper than Macrina, which used to be my pastry store of choice, it's not nearly as crowded as Macrina, and the people who work there are very nice, and helpful. They didn't even crack a smile when I involuntarily snorted when they said 'Snitter'.....

This bakery occupies a space in a condo building in lower Queen Anne. Their homemade tuna sandwich is really good. Their espresso is also decent. You can only park on the street, so it might be tough to find a parking spot.
I once had a slice of cake from this place and I was in heaven. It is amazing and I am almost affraid to go there because I know that I would devour all things in sight. So Good!!!
This is a fantastic bakery! I just moved from upper QA to lower QA, and my aunt had raved to me about this Danish bakery that she used to work by (which she credits with at least 20 pounds). I've lived in QA for about 5 1/2 years now and had never heard of or seen any Danish bakery, so I had assumed that they'd closed since she had last been in the area. But I very happily stumbled upon them on a walk the other day, and stopped in last night on my way home from work. It was about 10 minutes until closing time, so the display cases were looking a bit bare, but there was still enough there to make me know I NEED TO COME BACK. The woman who was working was very nice - I told her my story about trying to find them and asked to buy a chocolate chocolate oatmeal cookie, which she ended up giving to me, along with the other 3 remaining ones, for free! That's certainly the way to win a customer! And they were delicious, I figured I'd eat a couple and then save the other two for today, but none of them made it through the night. So I'll be back, they also serve Zoka coffee, and use organic ingredients, all which win points with me. It's a little hard to find, as it's sort of tucked away - you basically need to be standing right in front of it to tell exactly what it is, but it's worth the search!!
