After drinking a bottle of Nichelini Zin at a restaurant recently, a bottle that was probably one of my top ten favorite bottles of wine ever, my mom and I were excited to visit Nichelini and sample their other wines.

The tasting was an entirely disappointing experience.  While the grounds and old buildings are beautiful, the winery doesn't seem to get much traffic so the wines we tasted seemed like they had been sitting out for at least a day (bottom of the bottle and tasted funky).  The woman running the tasting room also seemed incredibly spaced out and lacked much knowledge of the wine.

And, they didn't have the Zin we'd been craving.  My mom later read that the wines at Nichelini are famously inconsistent, and after experiencing both the great bottle and the junk at the tasting room, I wouldn't argue with that.

This place is worth getting lost to find. A really cute little winery way off the main Napa drag. The vintners (some of whom I think are still part of the original family who started the winery in the late 1800s) are hanging around working and are happy to talk about the wines. The tasting room isn't particularly fancy, but the grounds and the history are really enjoyable to see and read about.
