Good pho joint. Flavorful soup. The amount of tendon was amazing to the point where I almost got sick. Noodle was nicely swimming in the soup - not something like you have to untangle really hard with chopsticks because they let the noodle sit in the bowl too long before poring the soup.
I also ordered deep fried spring roll. Again, flavorful. With good amount of vegetables. Probably don't even need the dipping sauce. But I prefer to drain the oil a bit more.
Service was sufficient. Somehow the table was sticky but not dirty...I guess. Of course affordable - around $5-6 for pho.
"Great place for Combo Seafood Pho"
Crunchy noodles....
I live in Olympia, so I spend a lot of time whimpering about delicious vegetarian pho and how I can't get any. Yelp's reviews pointed me to Nhu Thuy in Tacoma, a mere half hour drive from my house. Extra bonus: the vegetarian pho doesn't have tons of mushrooms (like Than bros). I don't mind mushrooms, but my kid will puke if he accidentally eats one.
Nhu Thuy is open until 9, so scuttle in at the proper dinner hour. The dining room has plenty of tables. The tables are a little crowded together, but it didn't bother me since we were one of only a very, very few filled tables. There's eclectic decor (including a ceramic gingerbread house in the front window ...) alongside the traditional stuff you expect to see in a Vietnamese restaurant. Chopsticks & spoons come out with the food; kind of nice if you're concerned about germs when your utensils live on the table.
Our server was prompt and super friendly. We didn't have any questions about the food, but I'm sure he would have been happy to help if need be. The food came out pretty quickly, but not so fast that I wouldn't have believed that some care went into the preparation.
There's a full vegetarian menu, but we stuck to basics: egg rolls, spring rolls, pho. The rolls were acceptable but not noteworthy. The pho, however, SHAZAM! The broth was delicious, the tofu was so good and crispy-fried. The noodles were not crunchy OR gummy like glue. There were tons of veggies - cabbage, broccoli, carrots, etc -- and they were all cooked exactly the way I like - not raw, but not soggy or overcooked. I really didn't have a single complaint about the pho.
Make no mistake about it: if this was any closer to my house I MIGHT EAT HERE EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Went to Nhu Thuy on recommendation of Yelp. Had the veggie pho. It was plentiful, cheap, fresh, and sufficiently good. The broth was nothing special; I like the broth at V & V or Pho Than better. The service was quick and we had the place largely to ourselves.
The menu has a lot on it; I'm intrigued to go back and try some other stuff, especially the faux meat offerings.
This place is the Vietnamese equivalent to the greasy spoon diners we all know and love. You've got the "regulars", the gritty ambiance, the comfort food and the dirt cheap prices. Sure, Nhu Thuy isn't the most glamorous of places to dine, but it is absolutely delicious.
The pho is actually some of the best in Tacoma, and I can say that, because I've tried it all. Seriously. The food here gets five stars without a doubt, but the staff isn't very pleasant and there are plenty of other places where that is a non-issue... bumping it down to four. I don't have the heart to go any lower than that because the food is just too good!
Who knew I would find a good Pho place in Tacoma, WA? This comes from a girl who lives in San Jose, which is the largest Veitnamese community in the US.
Awesome place, delicious food and clean.
I would come here again!
Went to Nhu Thuy after reading the glowing reviews on here, and I gotta say it: Yelp is probably the most reliable review site on the internet. Nhu Thuy is FANTASTIC. I got the vegetarian pho and it was perfect. Lots of veggies and lightly fried tofu with a well-balanced broth. The restaurant didn't look like anything special, it looked just like any other pho place, with prices just like any other pho place. Very unassuming considering how great the food is.
Also, get the small because the "regular" size is huge!
So after passing on Pho 38th due to their lack of veggie options, we drove down 38th and passed this place. I saw the "pho" sign in the window and figured it might be worth a try. The place was already closed (at 9:30 on a Sunday in Tacoma, I would expect them to be closed), but the door was open, so I figured I'd check the menu and see what they had so I'd know for next time. I was flat out shocked when the woman behind the counter told me that yes, they did have veggie pho, and yes, I could still come in and eat.
I grabbed my companion from the car and we went inside and enjoyed easily the best meals that I've seen in this area. I got a delicious order of veggie pho that was literally packed with carrots, cabbage, broccoli and tofu -- plus amazingly fresh noodles and the best broth I've tasted in Washington. My companion got an order of hot and sour soup that was some of the best soup I've ever tasted. Again, stuffed with veggies and tofu and seitan and... wow. Indescribably good.
The place itself isn't anything special, but, as is often the case with holes in the walls such as this, the quality of the food makes up for any lack of ambience. Also, instead of leaving the chopsticks and spoons on the tables to get coughed on, splashed, whatever, they bring all of that stuff out to you when you order. (Thankfully for us messy eaters, they do keep with tradition and offer napkin dispensers on the tables!) They brought out all the usual trimmings for the pho (basil, lemon, etc), too, minus the creme puffs... but I didn't even miss the puff at all because the food was so incredible.
Even though they were closed, they didn't rush us out; we rushed ourselves out when we realized that they'd cleaned the entire restaurant and were literally only waiting on us. Even still, we had to ask for the check, as is tradition in most pho places... and I very much appreciated that.
I can't recommend this place enough, seriously. If you like pho and you're anywhere near Tacoma, this place is definitely worth a stop.
I went with the Yelp flow and tried the vegetarian pho. Divine. That's my dish here from now on.

Thanks to you awesome Yelpers, I headed here last night after checking out the Museum of Glass. The food was fresh, delicious, and extremely authentic. Service was polite but a little inattentive... though the food is so good, you won't really care!
Okay...I am originally from So Cal so I've had great Pho and this is not great. Sorry!!!! The meat was so thick and was not evenly sliced. The broth was okay but I've had better...so much better. The place was slightly unclean and a little smelly. C'mon Yelpers! I can't believe you gave this 4.5 stars!!!
I ordered the Pho Dac Biet and a Thai Ice Tea like I normally do. It was pretty good but I've had better. The broth was good but the meat was a bit on the stringy side and they don't make their own Thai Tea; it was canned. All in all I would say next time I end up in Washington I would go back but I guess I've just been spoiled living in So Cal.
This is one of my favorite places to eat in Tacoma. The restaurant is nothing to look at, but the food is really good. It's authentic Vietnamese comfort food, the type you would get if you had a Vietnamese friend whose mom was an awesome cook. I especially like the Broiled Porkchops and Rice (really good). The beef chops are actually similar to Korean Kalbi shortribs but not as good. The fried quail was good but not exactly amenable to eating with rice. The prices are very reasonable. My wife says that the vegetarian options are very good.
Alright, alright, I know that I have talked up some pho in my time, but I was really suprised when I went to this tiny cafe in Tacoma. How my mom and I found this place was remarkable, as I had a hangover and needed pho post-haste and this is Tacoma, not Seattle. We drove around for and passed up a Pho restaurant with no veggie pho and a pho restaurant with veggie pho that was a bit offish, and settled into Nhu Thuy. I had to say I was skeptical, but as soon as the heaping bowl of Pho (with cabbage, broccoli, carrots, onions, lime, basil, bean sprouts a plenty, tofu, rice noodles and a gorgeous broth) came I was floored. This pho is slightly more expensive than Than Brothers (4.25$ vs. 3.85$) and you don't get a cream bun, but they have Agar Agar drinks, a flat screen TV, all sorts of other vietnamese dishes (including fresh spring rolls), and the best pho ever (better than Than due to the fact that Than's veggie pho only has mushrooms and tofu and I don't care for mushrooms much). If you are ever in Tacompton, check it out!
