the sushi is awesome. Love the contempory decor. The miso cod entree was great too, little miso glazed on top. Just pricey but worth the money for this fusion/sushi restaurant. I didn't see any celebs there when I went damn it.

I've been to Nobu Next Door on three occasions and each time I've run into a celebrity.
Denzel Washington sat right next to me on my birthday. That was sweet! Faamke Jansen was there one night a few tables over. And while waiting outside for a table to open up the third time, Mr. Nobu himself started up a conversation with my sister and I. He was really just trying to pick up my sister but whatever, we got seated immediately after. He was a pretty funny guy.
The food is great as you'll read from all the rest of the reviews. I had this one sake that was aged 20+ years and ever since I've only bought this sake. It's so smooth! I forget the name of it but it translates to something along the lines of "1000 Beautiful Ladies from the South". How can you go wrong with that?

Seated immediately at 7pm on a Saturday night. Busy place but service surprisingly attentive.
First time at this famed institution, so we ordered the hitters...hamachi jalapeno, miso cod, rock shrimp tempura, tuna tataki...as well as some other choices, spicy creamy crab and spicy seafood soup.
The overwhelming thought that ran through my head during the course of this meal, was..."wow, this is really salty".
Good, well seasoned food, but salty. And I can handle my salt!! I regularly and liberally use fish sauce for goodness sake!
And for Japanese food, its so heavy and oily. True we chose tempura and creamy crab as two of our dishes, but it was unnecessarily oily and rich. I didn't feel that faux virtuous vibe that I normally get from eating Japanese food.
Would possibly try again in the future, but not before I hit up all the other great places in Manhattan.

You get what you paid for, and boy did I pay!
Next Door offers an Omakase menu, where the chef makes selections for you. The price for this indulgence is listed at: $80, $100, $120 and up.
As such, I asked the waitress what a good value for "and up" might be. She avoided the question, and refrained from making any specific suggestions. As such I said "$300, how about $300?" She checked with the chef, then agreed that would be fine.
I then spent the next 2 hours eating amazing, artful plates of food that each managed to make the selections of my dining mates (who had ordered more modestly) look comparatively mediocre, even though they were in fact quite great.
My memory of the meal is just 2 hours of delicious happiness and flavor, coupled with a desire to repeat the order next time I dine at Nobu.

If there is such thing as something equal to an orgasm it would be Nobu or Nobu next door.The Yellowtail jalepeno, sashimi salad, spicy crab, and the oh so delicious Bento chocolate cake or Mochi icecream are all to die for! Oh did i forget their famous Lychee martini's??? Always a treat!!!!

Having eaten the prix fixe at the Las Vegas Nobu's, I expected the same, " whoa, there's a party in my mouth kind of amazement" at the New York location. Maybe it was because it was the "next door nobu's," or maybe because it was a jam packed Saturday night. The sushi looked like it was rushed and sloppily put together, also I didn't get the mind blowing experience like in Vegas. Eh, maybe I'll try the real Nobu one day in Manhattan.

They say that Nobu Next Door is just as good as Nobu, only a bit more affordable. That being said, I've never actually been to Nobu, but next door was damn good. Possibly the best meal I've ever had. And I eat great food everyday at work.
From what I recall, the seared tuna salad, Kobe beef, miso cod, and halibut cheeks just melted in your mouth. I normally reserve such adjectives for 3 important food groups: dessert, chocolate, or cupcakes, but the entire meal was glorious. It took a while to get seated and order, but it was worth the wait.
No reservations if you come early enough. Great atmosphere, good service, and the food was amazing. Normally, I dont attempt to eat raw fish unless it's really fresh. But I trusted Nobu and found out just how fresh their sashimi was. I could not get enough of it. I had the set meal so I basically ate whatever the chef brought out, and it was all delicious. Yummy!

Sorry to say: overpriced. Let me be clear, this is not a knock on the chefs or the quality of the food. Everything I ate was fresh, clean, tasty and from my perch at the sushi bar there is no doubt about the knife skills of the sushi chefs. I witnesses paper thin cut after paper thin cut of various fish. Bottom line: when I spend a hundred plus per person, I expect to be slightly drunk, comfortable full and had at least one oral orgasm that I can recount and smile with satisfaction later (see Uchi).

Walked in on a Sunday evening around 9 and was seated with no wait. I had the "mid priced" tasting menu, which was still fairly expensive.
The food was pretty good and each dish (about 8) was creative and dissimilar from the others. I'd probably go back and try both the more expensive and the less expensive tasting menu variants. The rest of the menu didn't look all that different than a zillion other places, but it's probably not fair to make a clear judgment without eating a sampling of the other dishes.

My favorite high-end restuarant on Earth is Nobu in Las Vegas, so naturally I love this New York City location with its no-reservations policy, identical menu and urban vibe.
The first time I visited Next Door Nobu was in 2000. It was my first exposure to what would become the worldwide Matsuhisha empire. The decor was shiny and new, there was a long wait at the door and the interior din was deafening. Now, seven years later, the fixtures are worn but the menu and attentive staff please like a well-oiled machine.
P.S. Nobu's rock shrimp tempura with spicy creamy sauce is the only food I've ever dreamt about.

Great service, nice vibe, got in easily at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Loved the tempura and cold and warm fish dishes that we ordered. Tiradito(snapper ceviche with ponzu and chili paste)... YUM. Black Cod with Miso, of course no contest.
Did not love the sushi, I second Jon E. 's sentiment.. what's up with the size of the nigiri?
We also got the bento box dessert: green tea ice cream and flour less chocolate cake. The fact that it was in a box with a lids created a nice moment when the lid was uncovered. I actually smelled the chocolate and the green tea.
The next table had an eight people birthday party and the service staff handled it very well. That's definitely a plus. Overall it was just an okay experience for us. Now if we get to see the Bush twins and other deserving celebrities, that may help.

It's the next best thing to the actual Nobu except that if you show up early, there are no reservations required and no long wait. I took a friend there for her birthday and we had a wonderful experience. The service was above average and super attentive. I liked the Anti-Cucho Peruvian Style Spicy Chicken Skewers and their Tempura selection-love bell peppers and sweet potato.

In my top five restaurants for right now
Waited for restaurant to open for Sunday Dinner. I didn't have reservation but were seated quickly without any wait. After 20 minutes I was seated, the restaurant was pretty full.
Ordered variety of foods - lobster tempura, miso cod, halibut cheeks, and sashimi (toro and hirami). Lobster tempura was good. Miso Cod was bit too sweet. Halibut Cheeks were bit tough and its sauce pretty heavy. Sashimi was pretty disappointing given all I heard. Portion was pretty small (extremely tiny thin slices). Given amount of money it cost, I would rate it average. I've had better sashimi elsewhere. Overall good service.

Came in for an early dinner on Wed. night. Great atmosphere, friendly service, fresh fish..............Could not believe what an incredible rip-off this place has become, though! You could literally see through the very small sashimi slices. I had ordered 4 pieces of sashimi that easily could have equalled one normal sized piece. The eel/cucumber roll was extremely small in diameter and short with eel the size of a pebble inside (really had to look to find it)! They should be ashamed of themselves. Bottom line, my friend and I left after having paid over $200 for the dinner STARVING! Very sad...I really liked the place.
I just don't get the premise behind next door to nobu which is next door to nobu.
Last time i was here i had dinner with ed burns and christy turlington, well not really but we were sitting next to them like 3 tables away.

Why am I the only New Yorker that doesn't like this place? I'm from California and Japan so I LOVE my sushi. I'm really fond of the authentic Japanese sushi experience, and this wasn't it.
I've had fresher sushi at assorted other places in NY and I don't believe the hype with the Nobu establishments. The sushi was way overpriced for the average quality and the only reason I've been here is a few times is because my goofy friends from out of town insist that we go here because of what they heard about Nobu from Zagat and such. Yeesh! After we had dinner, my party was still hungry so we went out for pizza afterwards. I didn't have the heart to tell them I told you so.

After dining my previous night at Tia Pol, I was excited that my trip to NYC would be filled with absolutely fabulous dinners every night. But unfortunately, Nobu Next Door failed to meet the challenge. Honestly, I wasn't too hyped up about it, but wouldn't it have been great to have no average food?
The service was excellent, the food was all of excellent, no detail was overlooked, as you would expect from a place of this statuture.
BUT wtf is up with the size of the nigiri?? They were SERIOUSLY thinly sliced. I'm sure the fish was of excellent quality, but I COULD NOT TASTE IT because there was such a small amount of it in my mouth. I haven't had sushi cut so thinly ever in my life. What a waste. In retrospect, I would not have ordered nigiri, and would have gotten more sashimi.
Redeeming factors? Well, they kinda had an interesting selection of cooked dishes, like a whole fish that you can just pull the meat right off of. But two weeks after my trip, nothing else really sticks out (unlike every other meal I ate in NYC). Since I'm not from New York, I can't recommend some place better, but I think if you went to some place a little less concerned with style and class. Then you'll get your proper cuts of sushi, and you won't feel like you spent over $100 on a lacking experience.

I'm not very big on sushi, so when i was invited i was a bit reluctant but i am glad i arrived late. I tried to keep an open mind so whatever was brought in front of me i tried to take a little taste here and there. There was black cod, tuna, salmon, eel, and this amazing fried shrimp thingy. I really enjoyed the food here very much, and coming from a non fish guy it should mean something?
It is very much relaxed next door than it is at nobu, and it is very discreet. I dont think there was ever a name on the door - i just saw nobu's emblem and recognized it and opened the door. If it hadnt been months of emblem research i would've been later than i had already been. As i said the feeling is much more relaxed with an interesting choice of banquettes. However the service is still very much up there with Nobu..never felt like there was a service shift at all.
p.s. i am still trying to find my fixer for little owl...help !

This is the best sushi place on earth! The same menu as nobu, and it is right next door to nobu so if nobu is crowded- go next door. I had a few tuna rools, beef skewers and delicious miso soup that is to die for. All for under 40.00 for 2 people, which is a steal in NYC. Of course we weren't drinking alcohol. We had our 20.00 martinis at the W- that's a whole other review!

OMG the food was amazing. I was brought here on my birthday and we got the tasting menus and I totally almost died! of tasty delight! such an experience!
Actually my birthday was months ago and I don't remember *everything* that we ate but I do remember lots of oohing and aahing and enjoying every bite, but anyway the highlight was being shoved aside by Secret Security when we were trying to leave because the Bush Twins (TM) were squeezing their way in. I saw the Chubby One and the Drunk One. It was awesome.

Yes, the food is amazing. Yes, it has a cool vibe. But, am I the only one who thinks that it is way too expensive? When looking at the menu the prices seem fine, but when you see the portion sizes you realize that you will need seven $18 plates of food to be full. I highly recommend that you check this place out, but have a big snack before you go, and get dessert somewhere else.

Went here a few months ago with no expectations.... The service was eh--we ordered an appetizer, two soups, drinks and an entree to share and the waiter looked at us and was like ummm you're going to need to order more food... Luckily we were sitting next to AVA from Nip Tuck and David Schwimmer was across the restaurant eating so that gave us something to talk about... Ooooh, what can I write about this place that will describe exactly what it was like to eat there? Well, my hubby and I saw Nobu and recognized it from about a dozen food and wine magazines, so we decided to splurge and have a real sushi experience, NY style.
As we stepped into the restaurant, I distinctly remember having this sinking feeling that I was nowhere near the level of hip-ness or cool that was required at a place like Nobu, or Next Door either. The hostess was very polite, and really, really skinny...not that that matters. She sat us at a table next to a couple of really old looking 20 year olds. They all wore too much make-up and dressed like they had just raided their mother's couture closet. As we eavesdropped on their conversation about how many calories were in a piece of raw tuna, we noted the delicious array of dishes they had in front of them. Instead of taking a risk at looking like stupid tourists, which we were, we just told the waitress to order the things we saw on the next table. We also ordered some really good sake to accompany what we suspected would be the most delicious sushi ever to grace our lips.
Our food came very quickly, which was a big hint to us...obviously there was a wait for a table, and they wanted quick turnover. But they were going to have to pry our San Francisco asses out of those cushioned seats if they wanted our space. Once we started eating, we planned on staying a while.
The sushi was truly spectacular. Very delicious, very chic, very elegant. The presentation was what made the dishes special...every detail was attended to with great care, down to the last sprinkling of tobiko. We ate everything in sight, including the garnish...in fact, I may have eaten something plastic by mistake.
As the wait person eyeballed us at every pass to see if we were done, we stalled for as long as we could, casually ordering another plate or two as the night rolled on. We sipped our unfiltered sake sparingly, daring the Nobu staff to rush us out the door. If the owners of Nobu had planned to have a beautiful, hip, casually cool restaurant, they succeeded...but it backfired in a way, because we loved the atmosphere (and the awesome food) and didn't want to leave.
After two and a half hours, we begrudgingly gave up our seats to some other silly tourists. It was a great meal, and a really enjoyable evening.
The pricing was high...waaay too high for sushi. But I really didn't mind paying the ridiculous bill...I just considered it rent money for the space our butts filled during our meal.

Great sushi - believe the hype. I've also been to Nobu at the Shore Club in Miami, but I thought this one was better for some reason. It was about 8 below zero the night we were there, so I drank lots of good hot sake, too. Maybe that had something to do with it.
The fact that it was Nobu *Next Door* made us joke around and say the quality would be subpar, but having been lucky enough to have dined at the original Nobu, I can say that there is no palpable difference. If anything, it seemed much more... laidback? here, thanks to its no-reservations policy, maybe.

I recently had an absolutely outstanding experience here. I have to admit that I went into the meal wondering if the food really would be different from other Japanese restaurants. I guess I was a bit of a skeptic, a bit of a nay-sayer, a bit of a party-pooper. I'm fully prepared to say now that I have been properly schooled in the delicious lusciousness that is Nobu Next Door.
From my first bite of hamachi layered with jalapeno and cilantro, I knew that this was going to be the best Japanese meal of my entire life! The yellowtail sashimi was so exquisitely tender, more tender than I thought possible. I know it's terribly cliche, but the phrase "melt in my mouth" definitely applies here. The rock shrimp tempura with spicy, creamy sauce was totally addictive. I was sharing with a big group and I could barely refrain from taking more than my share of the sweet, spicy and crunchy shrimp morsels. Of course we had the black cod with miso...how could you not??? And some sushi morsels, which were delicious, but not extraordinarily outstanding, but definitely high quality. We finished with a bento box filled with warm chocolate cake and green tea ice cream. Liberal amounts of house sake kept things rolling.
A key tip to remember - Nobu Next Door takes reservations for parties of six or more, so get a group of people together, make a reservation and then get ready to chow down!

My partner ordered the $120 omakase and I just added some dishes of my own (my favorites - the the rock shrimp tempura with ponzu sauce, miso soup & broiled black cod with miso)...more than enough food for both of us. He enjoyed the sushi served with his omakase (unlike one of the other reviewers) -- I don't "do sush", but love Japanese food. We topped our meal off with dynamite palate cleanser followed by a bento box and an apple crumble (absolutely delicious). Couldn't be more pleased -- oh wait, it would have been better if we didn't share the restaurant with 6-year-olds.

There's nothing on the menu that isn't perfect!
The Nobu Next Door in Tribeca is a great spot to see celebs. It is very pricey here but that is because you are eating at the worlds most famous sushi chain which is 5 stars of course not to mention that fish are a rare commodity and you can just get high grade sushi anywhere. FANTASTIC SUSHI...but wait you're a vegan...what are you doing eating at this joint?
...Well the first time I ate at Next Door Nobu was in my Pre-Vegan (2004) days, NDN is the sibling restaurant of the world renowned NOBU, which is...as you guessed it...next door. The sushi was delicious, melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Our server was fabulous, she helped us pick out an assortment of the tastiest morsels on the menu. Nobu has a great assortment of sake's that are made exclusively for them by Hokusetsu. The sake's are served in single, small, large or bamboo sizes. The bamboo size is the most fun as it's served in a hollowed out bamboo shoot and served in bamboo cups, very cool. The higher end Nobu sake didn't have much flavor so we resorted to the lower end sake for the second bamboo around...and that had the perfect kick to it!
The beauty of Next Door Nobu is that they don't take reservations (except for large parties) so there should always be a table available, but do expect a wait unless you eat at the sushi bar.
The second time I ate at Next Door Nobu was as a vegan (10/05)...and surprisingly enough there were plenty of dishes for me to eat! Most were creations off the menu...just let the waitstaff know that you are vegan and they will suggest a handful of selections to choose from. The most decadent item that I ordered on the menu was avocado tempura...oh my gawd...if you love avocadoes THIS is a dream come true.
Oh the price...right...well...it's expensive...but it is definitely well worth it...sometimes we just have to spoil ourselves, don't you think?

i would not get the omakase at next door nobu b/c its more of a quick in and out to me. besides, the omakase is basically a selection of the most popular dishes on the menu. just order several of them and you're good to go. i will never get sick of rock shrimp tempura with ponzu. or the yellowtail jalepeno. or new style sashimi. maybe the black cod....
the chocolate souffle was good. had it with green tea ice cream ( i know i'm lame ) but it turned out great.
i usually manage to get a reservation at nobu but if you can't this place is perfect for your latinjapanese fixe.

The hamachi with jalapeno melts in your mouth, tempura rock shrimp and black miso cod are not to be missed.

Excellent food without a reservation! Show up early to avoid a wait. Entrees aimed at providing a fusion of Peruvian and Japanese influences.

I went to New York a couple years back with friends for Spring Break. Regardless of where I am, I make sure to try out the good places of the visiting city. So as every review site, magazine, NYer recommends...Nobu. I went with my friends at lunch in the pouring rain to get the Omakase. I'm from Southern California where there's a sushi place every few miles from each other and Top Notch restaurants are aplenty.
I would say Nobu is pretty good but not fantastic. They have specialty dishes for food and sushi, but nothing like the fusion styles you see in California. Anyways, we went off-peak hours so the wait was no problem and 10 of us were split up to 2 tables. 1 for the Omakase people and the other for the Orderers.
The Omakase was 7 courses and included...
Miso Soup (yeah its a course)
- Good nothing more nothing less
Minced Toro in a wasabi dressing with a Japanese plum seed (i can't remember exactly)
- It was great. The minced toro was flavorful in its own and not completely overpowered by the wasabi dressing. The sour seed was a nice palette cleanser combined with the always sinus clearing wasabi.
Yellow-tail Sashimi Salad
- The yellow-tail was good quality topped with a soy sauce vinaigrette mixed with minced daikon dressing.
Miso Sea Bass (one of their signature dishes)
- Some people might think the Miso flavor to be too strong, but I liked it. It had a decently strong sweet salty taste with great texture. The fish flaked off just perfect, maybe a slightly barely on the more cooked side; but I rather be on the safe side.
Grilled Alaskan Char
- Now this is a bit different...my first time having char. Char is like a hybrid mix between salmon and trout. Its not as buttery as salmon but has a nice texture and subtle flavor of trout.
Platter of regular high quality sushi (tuna, albacore, salmon, yellow-tail, mackerel)
- I don't think I really have to comment on these. They were good.
Chocolate Souffle with Green Tea Ice Cream
- As other reviewers have written, this is another one of their signature things. The souffle/cake is served hot and is moist and has a rich fudgy chocolate taste. The green tea ice cream was not too creamy and had a good balance for the chocolate cake.
Service
We'll start from the beginning and work our way in. My group didn't have reservations but luckily we came a little after lunch hour. The hostess was very gracious and immediately got us two large tables next to each other. They also offer free coat check-ins because of the lovely downpour outside. The waiter was prompt and quickly helped organize our tables (1 for omakase and 1 for the others). He patiently explained the menu, his recommendations, signature dishes, etc since obviously we're from out of town (Spring Break kids aka 18-21 year olds). As each dish from the Omakase was served, he would give a brief 30 sec to 1 minute description of each which I've tried to remember now and hopefully haven't made too many mistakes. Everything here was taken care of as a higher class fine dining restaurant should have.
Environment
We went to the Next Door Nobu not the Nobu itself, but from what I've heard they are the same pretty much. This version is decent sized for its location and has about 15 tables (please correct me if I'm wrong). The restaurant has a very earthy trendy feel. They offer a full sushi bar and alcohol bar for the power lunches and business men along with a more relaxed table setting spread around the restaurant.
Overall/Price
Nobu per everyone's recommendations was well due. They do a good job in every aspect of restaurant life: food, service, atmosphere/environment, etc. As well as they have done, I feel that again they don't come up to par with other sushi restaurants that I've been to in California, Vancouver, etc. Nonetheless, New York still has an outstanding sushi restaurant in their midst and can fill any sushi lovers mouth. Oh BTW, the price of the lunch omakase was $80 with tip and tax.

Maybe it was an off night, but getting accused by the wait staff that we ordered the salmon tar-tare (which I didn't know even existed) over the most delectable o-toro tuna tar-tare was a bit annoying. I mean for the money we shelled out, we should of been ushered the correct order. Nobu is not known as much for the sushi (I would pass - unless you want a fresh uni or unagi - but just order a-la carte) and stick to what Nobu does best, Nimono type things. What is nimomo? Well things that are cooked with sauces and boiled to broiled for all different amounts of time and in small portions. That is what Nobu is good for, and the Cod with Miso is worth the trip. If you have money to burn, then Nobu is a great place. But I think there are many more places in the city that offer up better dishes without the attitude for much cheaper and tastier. But if you have to be seen at a Nobu, and can't get into the real "Nobu", then next door is a third or fourth choice for me.
This is the smaller cheaper Nobu?... good god what is the regular one like? We went here Friday night with a group of 10 for a book release party for a friend. We had two "Dads" (including mine) with us thankfully so I didn't have to pay the hurt for all the good food and drink I consumed. The author friend lives near by, so we had her order everyything and she came through huge. The yellowtail sashimi with little jalapeno slices was killer as was the seared tuna dish. We had the Miso Cod which as expected was epic. The Arctic char with crispy spinach was bit dissapointing but the sushi which follwed was great, as were the deserts and $12 Sake martinis (yikes). The service was good although strongly accented and bit difficult to understand. Cool atmosphere and it was pointed out to me at the end of the meal that I had been sitting within 20 feet of a young oscar winning actor and the female star of a current action hit who were dining seperately in relative anonymity. I can see why the Celebs flock here. I highy enjoyed it and will return
