Review from Jason G.
I really enjoyed the food here. We started off with fried oysters with cole slaw and remoulade. Excellent. It reminded me of New Orleans. Then I got me pan-seared sea bass with grilled sweet potatoes. The latter were very unusual and interesting. The sea bass was not pan-seared, more like breaded fish of fish and chips. Still pretty decent. There was some kind of purple sauce that was nice and I can't recall it's composition at all. And sauteed spinach, which was excellent. The girlfriend got turkey meatloaf, collard greens, and mashed potatoes. Turkey meatloaf was solid, collard greens were TO DIE FOR. I had a pear sake and the girlfriend had a mohito. Both decent.
The menu boasts of an eclectic mix. There seems to be a Japanese influence there. It's a bit unexpected but I don't care, it was perfectly welcome.
Bizarrely, they were auctioning off the art hanging on the walls. There were stickers saying "current price: $200." The art kind of sucked. I don't know what to make of that. -

I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN!
The woman sitting next to us ordered a "Succa-tee-knee."
Instead of Sriracha, our waitress said "Suh-chee-chaw."
And she didn't dry our glasses after removing them from the sink.
She tried to pour our beer into glasses with water still at the bottom!
And she raved about the Fried Chicken, which was dry and flavorless.
I don't know what gave me and my friend uncontrollable diarrhea, perhaps something was wrong with the awful sushi or the horrible sashimi, or perhaps it had something to do with the undercooked fatty pork chunks in the collard greens.
I called the restaurant to complain, and a very kind fellow by the name of Thomas offered to void the bill, but to be honest that doesn't really make anything "better," because I became so violently ill that I had to give up BEAUTIFUL seats for one of the most amazing operas of the 20th Century (Philip Glass' Satyagraha) and also miss my friend's birthday party afterward. Thankfully, I've seen the opera a few times before, and my friend will have many more birthdays. But, still.

Review from Benson Y.
After a long day running around New York City and climbing around Ft. Tryon Park, my group settled into "Next Door", a place that looked welcoming and inviting. Indeed, the layout of this bar/restaurant is very nice. When you enter, you're greeted by a bar area with television screens lining the area behind the bar. To the left is the main dining area, with several tables spread out with enough room to move around comfortably.
The staff was nowhere to be found when we first walked in so we just began pecking around for a place to sit. By the time we found a seat we liked, the waiters had caught up. It was a slow night, so I'm guessing we caught them off their guard.
Once we were seated, the service picked up. Our orders were taken quickly and soon slices of multi-grain bread were being provided along with a spread that I *think* was some combination of tahini and pumpkin. It was distinct, but not particularly strong, but not bad for someting that is given for free.
The menu at Next Door is mostly Asian influenced, with sushi and sashimi featuring quite prominently, but there are also other items such as burgers and what I ordered, turkey meatloaf with bok choi and mashed potatoes.
Now, I've had (and made) my fair share of turkey meatloaf in my time, and generally you have to season it very well and usuall add something (either a sauce, herbs or vegetable) to really give it flavor. Unfortunately, this just had...nothing exciting at all. The turkey was moist, and that's a plus, but there was no real distinctive flavor. The mash was whipped very well, but basically tasteless. As sad as it is to say, the bok choi was the best part of the meal. It was tasty, crunchy and cut into big slices.
Next Door is a nice place, and I get this feeling some of their other dishes may impress more than the turkey meatloaf. I'd give it another shot, but with only average expectations. -
Review from Hilary G.
Great good, crappy service.
Prepare to wait a while, because the servers tend to disappear for weeks at a time. They also tend to not be so nice. It's a great little restaurant in a great little neighborhood, so I'm willing to give it a few more shots - but my parents go a lot and say not much has changed. Maybe switch up some staff members, Next Door! -

We had a group come to Next Door for Sunday Brunch and it was just so bad that I had to write a review of it.
Wait staff had a attitude except when the bill was delivered. Food was absolutely cold, eggs and English muffins cooked poorly (how hard is it to make poached eggs and toast a muffin?) and one person in our party had to ask twice to get any action from the wait staff just to get the proper food order. I'm nearly certain the poor excuse for the hollandaise sauce comes from a can. Next Door owners - have you ever had hollandaise? Its usually yellow, not brown. The restaurant was nearly empty at noon on Sunday. That should have been my first clue.....about my last time at Next Door. -

I've eaten at 187 a few times. I've never been impressed nor upset- everything was... fine.
Today's lunch was a different matter. Their menu seems to have changed substantially, and the new one isn't available online. I believe what I ordered described as "Cajun (or maybe creole) pork chop with mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes." Something along those lines.
I got tasteless collard greens (vegetable? Ok. Mixed? No.) and decent mashed potatoes. The real problem, thought, was the dry, overcooked (but not warm) pork chop covered in gobs of barbecue sauce.
I can't imagine that the thing was even cooked today- but maybe in the last few days, so at least it wouldn't have been poisonous. Just foul.
The waiter never once came by to ask if my food was ok. After I scraped off the sauce, ate a few bites, then finished my potatoes he cleared my plate and dropped the check.
I'd never considered throwing up lunch just so that I could have a do-over. Congrats, Next Door! You made it seem like the logical thing to do. -

"I Think The Menu Describer Needs Firing"
I should have seen it coming, guys. I opened the door, was greeted by a woman who asked, "Two for brunch?" and nodded out of instinct.
Shit.
Brunch? I HATE brunch. I could rant all day about how pointless it is to change the menu, to jack up the prices for a poached egg, to serve as an excuse to drink yucky tomato- or orange juice-based drinks.
I also should have known that no restaurant claiming to be experts at both sushi and Italian cuisine could possibly be any good at making huevos rancheros. I mean, it's hard enough to believe that well made sushi and spaghetti could come out of the same kitchen, forget about the Mexican dishes.
It was an afternoon of mistakes. I ordered the ranch-style eggs and waited eagerly. A man stopped by the table to drop off a mini raisin muffin. Interesting.
And then the food came. And do you know what I got instead of huevos rancheros? Two fried eggs, a few spoonfuls of refried beans, home fries, and two strips of turkey bacon.
No corn tortillas. No salsa verde or chili sauce. No cheese. No sour cream.
What in the balls is this? Surely it's not huevos rancheros. Because we all know that huevos rancheros involves all of the ingredients I listed above, and the dish didn't incorporate any of them.
It wasn't that the food tasted bad or that the service was quite slow (no coffee refills, no asking if everything was nummy), it just wasn't what it was advertised to be.
Who knows, maybe I'm wrong and have been made a fool by some gringo-hating cook, but all I can say is that if you go Next Door hoping to order some Corn Flake Crusted French Toast, you'll probably end up with half a baguette and a bowl of cereal.

Note: the reason they're still eking out three stars is because I've eaten there for other meals (mainly dinner) and thought they were decent. -

I am happy to say that I have returned to this restaurant a few times since my original review, and things have been significantly improved. I have not had the burger since, but have found the farfalle with smoked salmon and a creamy pesto sauce a favorite. There is also a nice tequila chicken salad that also has mango and avocado that I like. I have also ordered the bento box special which usually has a great combo of sushi and other things.
One of my favorite servers from another restaurant in my old neighborhood now works here and that's a big bonus!
It just goes to show you that first impressions are not always accurate ones!Listed in: In the Heights

The sushi here is great, but in order to eat it I have to pretend that I cant see all the Italian menu offerings. Seriously: what kind of a restaurant specializes in sushi & spaghetti???

Next Door recently combined with the previous 107 West to open up a very nice bar/lounge area in addition to their full menu.
I do like the food at Next Door. I think it's fresh and inventive and I always leave there satisfied. I really enjoy the creole shrimp and scallops, the vegetable udon noodles, the crab cakes and the mushroom ravioli. The prices are a bit higher than I think they should be and the service is rather slow but that's my only complaint about the place. Overall, I think it's a fine choice for dinner in Hudson Heights just wish the service was better and quicker. -

I truthfully have never spent any time in Washington Heights, but was pleasantly surprised by this fabulous restaurant. I only ordered the soup (had already eaten, was just there to see friends I hadn't seen in ages!), but the soup hit the spot, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere felt kind of like a cool jazz bar with warm brick walls, nice art, and calm music in the background. My friends ordered dinner and their food looked delicious!
I would recommend this place to anyone who finds themselves in that area- it is a gem! -

Next Door continues to be unpredictable during brunch. When there is an issue, they tend to be responsive (when the manager on staff is involved) but the cooks and waitstaff really needs to think about how a diner feels. For example...
1) If diners are ordering eggs, it does not take a foodie to realize something is wrong when omelets and soft-boiled eggs are overcooked. Putting that in front of a diner is criminal.
2) The mixed fruit on the brunch plates...think about tasting it at the beginning of service. Does it have flavor? Is it ripe? If you are putting it on the plate, you should have an idea of how good it is.
3) Waitstaff should also have a sense for how warm the meal is based upon the plate. I got a lukewarm brunch plate, again, the last time I went.
I know enough about eating out in NYC to know that it is usually the "B team" that handles brunch in a restaurant. But still, I think the above is not too much to ask.
This isn't all the fault of the very patient and accommodating staff. When I have gone (and it has been less and less in the past year because of the above), there are never enough people and they all seemed more stressed than they should be for a small restaurant in Wash Heights.
The bar is a nice edition (what was there before wasn't much to write home about). They had some issues when they started (my wife and I overheard a bartender asking their spouse to being some liquor from home because they had run out of a vodka).
For dinner, the menu remains good enough. I tend to lean towards the American comfort food classics when I am there because they tend not to mess those up. While the occasional sushi role has been decent, it is not what I am thinking when going there.
Next Door is ok, but hoping the ownership can continue to refine. They have the ability to be THE place to be in the Heights. -

This place is anything but, next door....however if you're willing to go the distance, or you're in the neighborhood, this place is a gem. Serving organic gourmet in a warm romantic environment, with excellent service, I'd say I'll be back soon, but...well....187th?

Had a fantastic brunch here. Amazing strawberry butter, great waffles and eggs. Cute environment. Nice restaurant in an occasionally culinarily -challenged neighborhood. If you live in the neighborhood, you probably already know about this section on 187th.

This place earns four stars for the sushi. I've eaten here twice and the sushi is fresh and you can order it with brown rice if you like. I tried one of their cooked fish dishes and it was lacking something...i don't know...like flavor! If you're looking for a sushi fix, this is much better than the sushi place on 181st. Be aware, the service is a little slow and the dining room can be loud. Too bad they don't have outdoor seating...

If you're in Washington Heights around dinner-time, Next Door is a great choice. We went there with our two kids after visiting the Cloisters Museum and had great pasta dishes in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Went on a Saturday for brunch and there was no wait for a table. The place was not busy, but everything was unbelievably slow. We ordered drinks (tea & juice). The waitress didn't bring them after 20 min., so we reminded her. Thereafter, she came back and said they didn't have the juice but recommended another drink. Food came after about a 30 min. wait. The potatoes were undercooked but the salad was good. The omlette could have been made at home, nothing special, kinda like the place.

I've had lunch and dinner here, and both were excellent. I think they're still figuring out things like waiters, hostess, etc. but in terms of food it's great. The brunch menu is pretty classic, but really well done. The Dinner menu seems fusion japanese, which I'm normally not that in to, but I loved it. If you haven't gone, try it!

I was just looking for a casual place to get a drink with friends, and we stumbled upon this beauty. We weren't sure about what to get, and the bartender really went out on a limb and made us what he thought we'd like. He turned out to be spot on(especially with mine called a CosmoRita). We loved the drinks so much that we decided to stay for dinner which was out of this world amazing. The waiter was just as spot on as the bartender with his recommendations and very attentive without being obnoxious (and really cute to boot!) We really slurged and got dessert too, which for me was this caramel apple pie which makes me salivate just thinking about it. I would recommend it any day, anytime.

This place is amazing! The food is great, the drinks are delectable, and the dessert...what's a better word than delicious? The greatest thing though was the manager, Ryan. I heard a rumor from one of the staff they were looking to replace him, but if they do, they will be out of business in a week. This guys makes this place worthwhile!

Review from Alison B.
New York, NY
I've looked in the windows many times but always gone someplace else. Last night I finally took the plunge, and I liked it. The menu was an odd combination of organic American/pasta/Japanese, but my husband and I both enjoyed our meals: cheeseburger and linguini with skirt steak and asparagus tips in a peppercorn sauce. At first there was only one waiter/bartender to take care of a good number of diners, but he tried hard, moving quickly and being friendly yet reserved. Halfway through dinner another waiter showed up, which helped things move more quickly. The ambiance was nice and even with a crowded dining room, the noise level was low enough to carry on conversation.
