I love the deli in the back! Has so many great sandwiches named after spots in Newtown! I usually craft my own turkey sandwich- turkey, lettuce, tomato, onions, hot peppers, pepper jack, and spicy mustard! Hot, hot, hot! But the sandwitch is packed with meat and the amenities and is a joy to eat! If you're craving a turkey sandwich fine right that's it, and it is done best at the Newtown General Store.
In the mornings they have discounted Bacon, Egg, & Cheese on a roll! Great grab n' go!
This is place is a goldmine for hearty, delicious, and filling sandwiches. Come here & come often! -

Great place to grab lunch. Food was cheap; portion was large; wait was minimal, and choices were aplenty. I had a "Flagpole" which I was told is one of the most popular items on the menu. My memory may be a bit faulty, but I believe it had bacon, chicken, and avocado. It came simply wrapped in white paper and was large and very filling.
I loved the inside of the store, clean, old-fashioned, with high ceiling, and rustic benches near the windows. I would choose to come here for lunch over fast-food places in a heart beat. -

How could you go wrong with a freshly made bacon and egg sandwich for around $2? Benches are available if you'd like to sit outside.

You can't do better than this if you want a hot sandwich (for about $5, which is a good deal around here). While the flagpole is famous, I love hot roast beef and will usually go for "the Borough" or "the Sandy Hook" (I think that's what it's called). I usually get a cold mocha Frappuccino with it since they don't have milkshakes. The place has lots of options in terms of drinks, chips and candy. All sandwiches come wrapped up in foil and paper so don't bother to order for here or to go.
Best deal in town for lunch. Take the meal out for a picnic on Holcomb Hill on a sunny, breezy day and you'll be in heaven. -

You wouldn't expect to find a deli and sandwich shop in the back of a little general store, but it's there. Definitely worth a stop if you like cheap and delicious sandwiches. If I lived in Newtown, I'd probably be there daily.
"The Flagpole" is heavenly. -

How old school! But awesomely old school! Jars with old candy up by the cash register, and even drinks that are customized for Newtown and Sandy Hook...
Come here for the fantastic sandwiches in the back, and then grab yourself one of the few tables in the front to chow down (or if it's a nice day, sit on the tables or benches outside). All the sandwiches -- named after notable locations or establishments around town -- are excellent, but the Sandy Hook is a popular favorite. -

Although I can hear my arteries clogging with every bite, I gotta say, there is nothing on this planet better than the "Flagpole" sandwich.

Small and adorable. This place really feels like a "general store" I used to come here to buy snacks before the movies at the town hall.

Right on the historic Main St in Newtown, this place has the best sandwiches in town. Open early for breakfast sandwiches, this is a must-visit. Once you get your meal, go sit on the front porch with a great view of the flagpole and main street....and watch the world pass by. Norman Rockwell would have loved this scene!

Great place to stop in the morning for an inexpensive yet delicious bacon egg and cheese sandwich. Outside tables as well which is a big plus.

I used to dance at Lathrop School of Dance when I was growing up and at recitals, we would go over in our costumes and perform our routine for them to get a free sundae. I loved this place!!!
