I feel so lucky to have this place in the heart of Midtown! It's like the cool aunt that Borders never had.

This is a place I like to go when:

a) I'm feeling tired....grab a coffee at Peet's then head in.

b) I'm feeling uninspired...you would have to be a wet rag to not get  a tad bit stimulated here. I personally like to scout out travel, yoga, fashion and cooking mags. Found a really cool mag called Clean Eating! I LOVE it!!

c) I need a cool small gift....Super unique cards and gifts that make me giggle out loud. Kitschy magnets, bizarre air fresheners and cocktail napkins with outrageous sayings. It's like a Spenser's Gifts crossed with Dylan's Candy store with a little bit of Am Pm mixed in.

d) I want to cozy up with a magazine I don't intend on buying- So fun!

I've never asked for help there so they leave me alone... which is how I like it.

I would love some couches to lounge on, but I can understand why they wouldn't want to offer those. Why buy the cow if you can drink the milk for free?

Every time I walk in, my ADD kicks into hyper drive. To the left for the food/art mags or to the right for politics galore??? Or  ...straight back to investigate exactly what they have got going on in the candy/cigarette/ice cream/stationary section .. and it's always something good.

It really is a hedonists paradise in here where you can get smart, cool and your fix (whatever that may be) in about 5 minutes ... though I normally don't escape for at least 30. In fact, *itches arm* I need to get there soon, it's been over a week.

Oh, P.S. If they don't have something ... they will special order it for you no problem.

It's better than sex.

Nearly every magazine known to man, a decent selection of newspapers including my favorite - the bulldog edition of the Sunday SF Chronicle, British import candies (let's hear it for Nestle Smarties, chocolate masterpieces!), and lovely unobtrusive counter-staff.  I loathe the rest of the overhyped MARRS block, but Newsbeat is the one saving grace which makes that block worth patronizing.  Now, if I could just get a blasted parking space within five blocks of it!

It is one of those newstands that you give the downtown some big town credibility.  With the vasts amount of publications going away due to the digital era I still like picking up a magazine, reading its articles, and seeing the glossyness of the photos.  This place has all those little things that you really cannot find elsewhere.  You can grab a cigar, paper, and chill outside and read in a great environment.

Used to spend a lot of time in the downtown location cramped place that it was. You could hardly pick up a magazine without elbowing someone in the nose or the knees.

The new location makes me feel a bit shallow because I so enjoy it's ample space, air conditioning and racks upon racks of old school candy. One of the best places in Sacramento!

Newsbeat is one of my favorite places in Sacramento, aside from Capitol Park. I get lost in the extensive magazine collection... And they have a huge literary section. Complete with local "zines". Plus they special order sometimes, if you're real nice. Oh! And don't forget about the rows and rows of fancy sweets and European chocolate. Yum.

I love magazines. I really do and this place delivers a large variety. Plus they have some really cute cards that have more edge than Halmark. I wish though they carried some zines and more paper products. The little gifts they do carry are cute but not original, all are from the same brand.

This is one of my favorite places. I love it.

You too will love this place if:

1. You love strange candy.
2. You read the BBC's "Focus on Africa" and live in Sacramento.
3. You happen to be on 20th St., on your way home from an afternoon bender at a certain dive.
4. Like seeing people you haven't seen in a long time (Seriously: I always seem to have some weird reunion here.)
5. You suck at gift-giving.

Trust me.

Fricken awesome customer service!
Whoo HOO!  I got that notification about my Cook's Illustrated landing in Sacramento from their Davis location, yesterday.  And, I received that notice as a Yelp compliment. Who in the hell doesn't like compliments? I never mentioned Yelp, but they found me (shh, I like to play hard to get).
And, I just had to try and get tight with christ, so I also grabbed some of that "Lookin Good for Jesus" sparkle cream (I'm going to be all spangley now).  And just to even things out, some "Cute as Hell" lip balm, and "Fast Cheap & Out of Control" car air freshener.  I will be heading back there to snag a few calendars, and other magazines.  Once I take up cancer research, I'll be heading there to snag a stogie too.

I have always liked Newsbeat, but now I'm just twitterpated.  Even though I can barely muster the strength to say the word *marriage*, I would marry Newsbeat in a heartbeat.  Sorry honey, if you're reading this, I promise not to let him drive the Tahoe, pet your dog, or wear your slippers.

"It's for my girlfriend," I told the guy at Newsbeat after asking for a copy of this month's BIZARRE, which features Dita Von Teese on the cover. It really was for my girlfriend, but I don't think he believed me.

Now, after perusing the rag, I feel embarrassed: It's dirty, in a Hustler meets Nip And Tuck kinda way. Even my girlfriend, the Von Teese enthusiast, found it repulsive.

Anyway, not sure why I'm sharing this, except maybe to illustrate that Newsbeat has anything and everything. Need a copy of Hamburger Eyes? They can get it. Need Maximum Rock N Roll, Issue 300? Hell, they were able to unearth that for me, too.

And (this one's for you, Joe) they have FOUR different flavors of Its-Its. Oh, and they also carry those Petit Prince dark-chocolate shortbread cookies for, uh, someone besides me. Yup.

Hands down, one of the best things about Sacramento.

I'm a huge magazine junkie, so Newsbeat is like manna from Heaven for me. Scores of great publications and a very polite, helpful and cool staff. The owner's are friendly and always up for a chat.

What they don't have, they'll see if they can order it for you.

Two requests for the shop: a zine section if possible and Fixed magazine if available.

I love this place. Simple as that.

UPDATE: They carry COG Magazine now! I wish I could give this place an extra star just for that.

Newsbeat is right across from the Capitol. It's the only place to find The Funny Times. They have a variety of newspapers and a large selection of cigars. The candy section is full of old style stuff you won't see in other shops.
Newsbeat has "Paper Direct" service, this is neat because you can print out any newspaper from around the world and get it printed onto paper . Very cool.

I love the Newsbeat in Davis, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover that another one had opened near me in Midtown.  As part of the MARRS Building on 20th Street (and I shall translate, MARRS = Midtown Art, Retail Restaurant Scene), it's conveniently located a couple of doors down from Peet's Coffee, where I like to grab a cuppa joe before browsing.

Newsbeat is known for their diverse selection of magazines.  I tend to browse through magazines I only sometimes buy.  For politics and news, I'll check out Utne Reader, Reason, and the Atlantic Monthly.  To whet my appetite for science, I'll flip through Discover, Scientific American, Seed, and New Scientist.  When I'm feeling particularly Yelpy, I'll inform myself about food and drink through the pages of Gourmet, Bon Appetit, and Zymurgy.  You may catch me eyeballing Esquire or Details, or FHM and Maxim just for curiosity's sake (homina, homina, homina).

At any rate, they have a great selection of reading material.  This store seems a bit sterile and lacking character, but I'm sure that over time it will come to be a cozier little refuge.  I'm glad to see they also carry some of the eclectic things like the Davis store including European chocolate and candy, goofy birthday cards, and the like.

I grew up across the Yolo Causeway in Davis, where Newsbeat played an instrumental role in my teen years. The store's owners were uber-cool and let my alternative-looking group of friends peruse magazines for hours on end - it was our home away from home.

Now, some 20 years later, there's a Newsbeat right across from my place of employment (the Sacramento News & Review). Not only does it provide the perfect respite from the office, they're selection of magazines and newspapers is incomparable.

In a world where print media (including the Sacramento Bee) seems to be struggling, it's nice to see that there are so many publications still thriving.

Here is one of the only places where you can find hunters and gay dudes, Republicans and Democrats, and Scientists and Christians in the same room reading  the magazine of their choice. Everyone's too busy flipping through their magazines to be giving eachother the evil eye or spewing nasty comments.

I found some International craft magazines en Francais that I wasn't able to find anywhere else in town.  Thankfully, nobody could insult me on my choice of French magazines because I was in neutral territory.

Poo! I thought I would be first to review!

I loved going to Newsbeat when it was across from the Capitol, but didn't make the trek over there too often (too far to walk, not far enough to drive), so I was super happy to see that they were moving over to the MARRS building 6 blocks from my apartment. I can walk there! Yay!

They have the best selection of international, food, and crafty magazines. They are the only place in the area that I have found Marie-Claire Idees, which is a French craft magazine that I lurve.

I loved that the guy who rang me up asked me about the book I'm reading (Henry Fielding's "Joseph Andrews"). They also have my favorite German Milka chocolate bars.

I'm an admitted magazine junkie, so places like this simply enable my addiction. I can't leave there without clutching some glossy I MUST own. But Newsbeat offers lots of extras -- like a selection of cigars, interesting gifty stuff and hard-to-find candy. A friend of mine almost lost it when she spied a selection of British sweets she hadn't seen since her time studying abroad.

And I totally appreciate that they advertise their serene air-conditioned atmosphere to the overheated Second Saturday crowds.

The employees are always helpful when you can't find the magazine you're looking for. And they'll make note of anything that they don't already carry. So, if you're hunting for some kind of zine or foreign publication, they just might be able to get it for you. Just an all around awesome newstand, right in the heart of Midtown.

And I hear that they can print any of over 200 different international newspapers right there on the spot!

I love browsing in this store. All the magazines you could ask for and very helpful if you have questions. Sometimes I can't find the exact one I'm looking for because it has sold out but that doesn't mean I walk away empty-handed. Lots of domestic and foreign fashion mags, design, culture, art, you name it. They also have great little cards and gifts.

Another Sacramento favorite of mine. Right across from the Capitol.  It's the only place I can find The Funny Times, a hilarious topical humor magazine. I also like the variety of newspapers they sell. I'm still  a newspaper news junkie and like to check out newspapers from all over the country. You would not believe what happened in the local crime blotter of the Oregonian!

It's your one stop newspaper and magazine shop.

Um not to rag on Sacramento yet again but why the fuck is this one of the only places I can find The New Yorker? In the Bay you've got New Yorkers at Safeway. In SF you can't even enjoy a nice cup of coffee without being hassled by an issue of the New Yorker.

And up here, in my downtown "lifestyle" bougie Safeway all I find are three month old issues of Atlantic.

Newsbeat just moved from their longtime spot across the street from the Capitol into some nice new digs. While I'm happy Newsbeat is movin' on up, I miss the old one. You know that was a place where a discerning Capitol staffer could go to make secret hand signals and shit with other likeminded individuals. You'd walk in and feel some of the old magic still in the air.

I love this place. I'm a publication junkie -- everything from Print to AdBusters to McSweeney's to ReadyMade to Modern Drunkard to Utne Reader. This place has it all plus back issues. I also like the vibe. It's not that squeeky-clean-so-lets-all-bring-the-kids type of nightmare like a Borders or some other chain. I can buy a pack of smokes or a magazine that's in questionable taste. Or in French! Je t'aime, Newsbeat.

This place has way too much information in it. But that's cool, if you're into that. Me, I'm into the candy selection. They have lots of exotic stuff...did you know Australians made licorice? Once I left Newsbeat because I wanted to buy a tin of candy but I had left my dollar coins in the car. This lady followed me out and must of thought I was some sad candy-deprived kid because she offered me the two dollars I needed to buy the candy. This was actually in Davis but I'm sure Newsbeats anywhere draw that kind of generous, pitying crowd.

It's where to go if you desperately need something like yesterday's New York Times, or the Strait Times, or El Pais. Newsbeat is one of the things that makes Sacramento distinctive -- it's a great source for newspapers and magazines from around the world probably because its across from the Capitol. Lil' sis also noticed that they have "Paper Direct" service, where you can print out any newspaper around the world (downloaded via PDF possibly?) and printed onto size A paper --- a service that's much more popular in Singapore.
