I go here everyday (hello, stalkers). Why? They have... everything:
- Decent coffees/selection of teas
- H&H bagels
- Variety of cookies and baked goods from various local establishments
- Fresh sandwiches and salads made on the premises every morning
- Semi-gourmet-ish soups
- Magazines (for sale) that you can read and not purchase while you're there
- Computer stations
- Friendly staff that remembers I'm indecisive
To top it off, they sometimes have FREE COFFEE days (usually sponsored by WonderBra)! With balloons outside! And the staff wears emasculating WonderBra shirts! Yay!
For maximum pleasure:
Go there in the spring, order an iced coffee and a sweet. Sit outside and enjoy while watching the people trot along University Ave. It's a good thing.

Starbucks, and MudTruck Where art thou?
NOT on University and within Radius of my 12th street office. When we first moved here I was - dare I say - bummed! I was so used to having the MUD truck and good 'ol Bucks right downstairs, that I became a coffee snob.
So upon moving to my new space, I thought I was "settling" for the Newsbar - well I was wrong. These folks are excellent, make a fantastic cup of coffee, have great Serendipity Tea (lemon - honey is my fave) and OMG - their Blueberry Muffin is to DIE for.... seriously I love it and for $2.17 with tax it cannot be beat.
My new routine is a medium cappuccino - the foam is delectable there - and a muffin. The medium coffees and teas are 2.99, and they hit the spot. Oh yeah that's right - I said MEDIUM - take that Bucky!
I feel human again.
They also have internet connectivity, a mess of tables, yummy sandwiches that seem to be almost gone by 8 am - OR they don't make them til lunch, haven't figured that out yet. They also have a variety of soups.
I recently had a winter special - Apple Cider - dear lord, it was so filling, like a meal, Cinnamon-y goodness, warmth, and intense apple flavor - excellent.
So check it out!

This place charged me a quarter to add soymilk to my coffee. I got weepy.
I love this place! Excellent people-watching. Good prices, good location. Large selection of delicious sandwiches, half price after 7!! They also have soups, salads, sweets, etc. Some computers in the back (pay to use) and magazines along the wall, and benches outside.
Edit-- Also, they consistently play the best music ever without it being distracting!

There is really nothing wrong with the News Bar. Great selection of baked goods, specialty flavored coffee, tea, yogurt, fresh fruit, granola, sandwiches. Lots of seating, including a counter at the window overlooking the street, and computers with internet access set up in the back for 18 a min. Oh, and one wall completely dedicated to a variety of magazines and newspapers for sale. I was there for hours. And my freaking scone was so big I had to take it to go. To go, people. Because I couldn't FINISH the whole thing. Because it was HUGE.

I liked this place a lot when I was a student at the New School. It's very close and prior to Whole Foods, it was one of the only places where you could get a semi gourmet sandwich. There's also on site computers for use and wifi, good for running between classes. The baked goods and sandwiches, at least last time I checked, were half price after 5(?)...which makes for a very good student dinner. The walls are lined with magazines but they are pretty strict about viewing them when not buying.

Staff could be a bit more helpful here, but that's the only reason I knocked off a star. Good coffee, space to get work done, yummy snacks. If you need to warm up or grab a cup of coffee and have some time to kill, I definately suggest this place!

This cafe, conveniently close to union square, has great coffee at good prices, an internet cafe, and an overall cozy atmosphere. Great place to spend an afternoon working on your computer (or theirs) or just sitting around people watching.

Overall, the prices are excellent and the quality of the coffee is good. Many of the workers seem to be Central or Eastern European which lends a cool vibe to the cafe. The staff never complains if you read their newspapers or magazines, contrary to what other people may think. The only downsides are: the computers are too expensive, 18 cents a minute??, (though there is always someone on them), and if you want to have a real conversation, go somewhere else, b/c the seats are so closely packed you can hear everything someone else is saying, even if you try not to. But at 1.25 a pop for a small brew, it hits the spot.
