Oh wow.Hopefully my 4 star rating will dig this place out of the grave.
Its my favorite mall of the bay, actually. Its not overrun with a million people on the weekend like the Great Mall.Theres not as much trouble either. The quality of stores here is sure declining though,I must admit that.
Mainstays like KB Toy and Mervyns...long gone due to the economic hardships and financial peril.
Idk.Its still my favorite mall. Its usually really clean, uncrowded.Theres always plenty of places to park and now they have a Jamba Juice at the halfway point.
I did get hit at this mall though, which I think about everytime I go there.A delivery driver [big rig] crashed into the truck I was driving at the time, just F'd up my bumper...and the guy denied it.Luckily I got the PD out there to set him straight.
Went here for the first time in replace of Southland. It's a pretty nice mall. The Gamestop was a bit small and the Sorabol sucks, but the rest is great. My GF likes Joppa (I think thats right) and it has the stores I shop at so I can't complain. She also found her American Eagle, Hollister, etc. that she has been missing. The Target here is a bit weird, but it beats a Ross like at Southland. Overall I think this is my new place to shop that isn't too far away or really busy.
I like this mall, but unfortunately this place is starting to get boring. not many stores are here anymore like there use to be a couple of years back. But at least it isnt ghetto like S.land/Bayfair Mall, and they have a Red Robin there....Yumm! I guess the recession is hitting everyone, even the smaller stores within this mall. I cant talk bad about this mall since I, my sister, friends and cousins use to work here. Every year they have the same decorations for each holiday. When its halloween the stores would participate in giving out candy to kids, so parents can enjoy a bright lighted area and not walking door to door unless they want to. Its great for the little ones and only last till closing times. I dont know if they still do this, but its a nice idea.
Boring ass mall. I worked there for 6 years at Millers Outpost. and Actually I should not be so cruel to this mall as it had such a huge impact on my life. I met my husband because of this mall and some of the most important people in my life have come in and out of my life because of this mall but its boring as all heck! Small, no really good stores, Lame food court and it is quickly on the rise (IMO) as one of the most broke down malls in the bay area. Got to Valley Fair just a jaunt over the freeway or trek out to Broadway Plaza.
This mall sucks! It's been going downhill way before Old Navy left the building and their remedies seem to keep failing!
The only stores I like here are:
- Target
- GAP
- Forever 21 (bigger men's section than the one at Valley Fair)
- Daiso
They even closed the only food place I like in the food court, What's Up Dog. BOO!!! Where else can I get GOOD chili cheese dogs?!
Seriously ... this mall needs to get a makeover now! How are stores in the Sears wing even making money? How are stores like J.Qz Menswear, New Image, Fame, Domaine, Basic, Topaz even paying their lease? No one seems to be shopping there whenever I walk by!
And what happened to this whole Century 20 deal!? That would definitely have helped, but alas, it's still Cinedome 8.
If anything, they just need a few good stores placed in some strategic locations (not just the area between Entrance 3 and Target) and more good businesses will come. How about a Teavana, MetroPark, Godiva, Sephora, FYE, Borders, etc.? Variety! Not these dumb flea market clothing stores. This is not an OUTLET mall.
NewPark Mall is like a bigger version of Southland Mall but with a Target. It's my 3rd favorite mall.
I come to mall to go to the farmer's market, which is held in the west-side parking lot - the produce in the market "Rocks". After shopping at the farmer's market, I would walk into the mall to find that a lot of the stores are not that busy, and the offerings of the stores are slim. The only store which is busy are Macy's, JC Pennys, and Target. Even the food court has been slow.
These days, I prefer driving a little more to go to the Great Mall of the Bay Area in Milpitas, which is always busy with shoppers, and it is great exercise walking the entire circular mall.
Wow. What can I say. This place kind of makes me sad the way Vallco used to make me sad. Even on a popular day there aren't too many people in it and none of the stores here really interest me too much.
I find that to be a good mall you have to entertain while you shop. Even if this place had great stores and great selection (i.e. mix of upscale and normal and department stores), you'd also have to have people and the modernism it requires to keep the people around.
Oh yeah, and the food court is terrible ...
Malls are overrated. I can never find what I need or want in a store anymore. Amazon and other online stores are going to take over these mega malls. International countries that want to imitate America for the malls should hold their horses. It's not worth the investment and they're just going to follow our footsteps in unrealistic materialism and obesity. Seriously.
Living in Fremont my whole life, I have seen this mall try its best to evolve into one of the more acceptable shopping places. Stores and plazas around it have even changed or moved out of the area. I used to call this "the little mall that could", but now it's borderline with "the little mall that can't". It might just be the atmosphere and the people there.
Like I said in my review of the Great Mall, we're in a recession and people still come and shop. I will never understand why.
For the variety of stores here, there are plenty. I find it easier to shop here because I just have better luck shopping at home. I love that the new Forever 21 moved to that location where that furniture store used to be and I still try and drop by the nail salon under Payless once in a while for a touch-up. There is never going to be a mall that will wow its customers unless it turns super posh like the South Coast Plaza in SoCal, but other than that, if you can't afford it, it's just going to be a museum for you to walk and look around.
They should demo the entire mall, plus the cinedom, plus the HomeTown Buffet area, plus the now defunct automall, PLUS Newark Memorial (including the little Asian shopping complex next to it) AND the BJ's/formerly Rasputins/PetsMart/Motel 6 looking complex...
...and let Billy Bean build his next empire! GO OAKLAND A'S OF NEWARK!
It's an awful name, but it would generate more revenue than what they've got going on now. We also know that it will never happen, so we're stuck watching this entire property (and extension thereof) fall to the likes of Eastmont, Bayfair and Hilltop Mall. Oh well.
One of those dilapidated malls that the big companies don't renovate (such as macy's) because they probably don't generate enough profit to do so. Therefore, you're left with dated .... well pretty much everything.
All the stores there seem smaller too for some reason. Bath and Body Works is tiny, Victoria's Secret is tiny, etc. The only thing bigger than normal is the elevator ...
not sure if i would return here by choice.
Not the best place for shopping. Reason is, the mall is small. My friends and I covered the entire mall in 30 minutes today. True, we didn't go into stores and seriously looked, but there weren't a lot of stores that were appealing. For people who go out to Newark for a mall, they might as well go to Milpitas for Great Mall. The stores there are common and there aren't any that stick out except maybe Daiso (which is severely overpriced Japanese goods). "Meh. I've experience better."
As ghetto as this place is, the truth is that you can get so much shopping accomplished here. So what if this place is extremely reminiscent of my high school days? And who cares that everyone you know and their moms are here. The point of the mall is to just get what you came in for and get the hell out. And Newpark Mall can help you accomplish those goals. The End.
Ghettoest mall in the bay area that I've ever been to. Hands down. Even tops Northridge Mall that I've been to once down in Salinas.
But at least they got an arcade over here.
In all fairness, this mall is nothing compared to Valley Fair or Stoneridge or even maybe the Great Mall in size or the number of stores. However, it's not too bad for it's size and there is plenty of parking so you don't need to fight for parking spaces especially during the holiday rush when you are you in a crunch for a gift. Sears, Macy, JCPenney, and Target is convieniently all connected to the mall as well.
This mall could definitely use a renovation though.
There was a time this was a decent mall. Not anymore. The anchor stores are a pretty good JC Penney, weird two-story Target, half-baked Macy's and a third-world Sears. There used to be a Mervyn's -- but it moved across the street and promptly went bankrupt and closed.
Speaking of closed, there are empty store spaces everywhere. Basically the entire approach between Macy's and Sears is vacant with the exception of Big 5 Sporting Goods, Work World and a few other places I can't remember. There are lots of places selling sneakers and t-shirts to teens. There's a food court -- featuring the usual swill and plenty of it.
Overall, this place is really, really depressing anymore. The parking lot hasn't been paved in years -- and is loaded with giant potholes. There are store spaces which have been empty for years. There used to be a Fresh Choice across from the Red Robin -- but it closed during the Clinton administration. It was something strange like a bike shop for a week -- and has been empty ever since.
Given the demographics in Newark, there will never be a Nordstrom -- and every time a good chain store closes, the space either stays empty or is filled with some half-assed mom and pop store that sucks. Another really annoying feature about this mall is that it's loaded with kiosks for crap like cell phones -- and their employees annoy the living hell out of you as you walk by. Please, guys, I've got a cell phone -- just let me enjoy the decay in peace.
Seriously? The place needs to be bulldozed. Either that or turn it into a giant indoor go-kart track.
This place is terrible. It has really gone down hill and has done literally nothing to improve itself. I live in Fremont and I purposely avoid New Park Mall. I rather travel to Stone Ridge or Valley.
Growing up in Fremont I can remember when this mall was the place to be through the 1980's if you lived in Fremont or Newark. It started to decline in the mid to late 1990's and hasn't stopped declining.
When shopping at Newpark Mall one feels like they are shopping at a giant in door flea market.
This mall should be torn down and a big park should be built in its place!
It does the job. I come here for sales and for Target. I know that I'm not coming here for high end fashion or high end anything for that matter. Also, you've got a lot of kids walking around here, so there's that factor too. (Yes, I used to be one of them...)
This place is way below par in comparison to Stoneridge or Valley Fair, which really aren't that far to travel for the huge increase in quality.
There is not one store in the Newpark Mall that isn't BETTER at any other mall [besides Southland, which is equally/possibly more sucky].
The only decent thing about this place is that they are close to my work. Not that I need to be shopping on my lunch break........
When did this place get so damn ghetto?
OMG. This place used to be the bombdiggity. My parents would drop me off to hang out with my friends here about 10 years back. I'm home again for Christmas break, and I needed to pick up some random stuff from Target. I got my stuff and wandered into the mall... my goodness.
Maybe I've just gotten used to living in bougey La Jolla? Maybe I didn't notice it all before? There's just loads of closed stores, stands selling bad weaves, and the highest concentration of pregnant children I've ever seen... ever.
Went here today and was surprised how many shops have closed. The anchor stores..Macy's, Pennys,Sears, and Target are there but the small shops inbetween are closed or rarely busy. Food court is small. This place is dead. Maybe they can film a zombie movie here.
I agree with the people who said this use to be a nice mall. Red Robin is the only worthwhile place to visit for me.
Man, this mall has so much going for it - unfortunately, what it doesn't have, is great stores. And that, as you might reason, would be a huge downside. It needs a renovation, or some deals with some top tier stores to bring it to a destination mall, rather than a convenience mall where it is now.
Why does this mall have potential?
-Great location around 880, served by 2 exits (Mowry/Stevenson). Easy ingress/egress and no parking headaches. Getting into, parking, and getting out of Newpark Mall is essentially the opposite of Valley Fair - fast and painless.
-Target attached to the mall. Get your convenience/household items, and hit the mall in one trip
-Sunday's farmer's market in the parking lot is the best in the area
What can be improved?
-Get some nicer, "destination" stores in there: Coach is a great start, how about a Nordstroms, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, etc.
-Restart that whole Century 20 theater project again. C'mon, don't tell me the Cinedump across the way serves us well. 1960 called and wants their theater back. Does not any developer realize that the cities of and Fremont/Newark, with a population of 200k+ have no destination movie theater? I'm sure we all don't want to keep driving down to the Great Mall or Union Landing. Newpark is an ideal location.
-Do some even minor renovations. The storefronts and walking area aren't the best, but passable. How about the bathrooms in the food court? I wish it were possible to repress the memories of my experience there.
It seems like Newpark is this black mark of ghettoness almost equidistant from "nicer" malls like Stoneridge, Valley Fair, and Stanford. With some changes it could easily be THE east bay destination.
This mall hands down AND feet down SUCKS!! I refuse to go in this mall with the exception of maybe target and the dairy queen that only serves dessert. When I go in there, it makes me feel dirty and poor, its almost like the owners of the mall DON'T want people to show in the stores or at the mall in general. I remember in the late 90's when the mall was bustling with people and the shops no matter what time or what kind of merchandise they had would be jam packed. That was before alot of clothing/shoe stores went in and a lot of boutiques stores suddenly over ran the mall in the early and mid 2000's. I will hardly choose the target there, instead I'll go to the one at the hub in Fremont. If I really want to go to a mall, I'll drive up to Pleasanton and walk around Stoneridge, at least there I don't feel dirty and poor, granted the people there can tell I don't have lots of money, but it doesn't bother me. By all means AVOID this mall like it is the plague, unless you HAVE TO go there for a reason only Newpark can solve. I just can't stop talking about how horrible it is. They need to close it down, repaint it, remodel it, new floors, new stores, new ceiling designs, new EVERYTHING, that or blow it up and turn it into something else that everyone can do that will make money. I'd rather roll around nude on a bail of nails then spend more than 30 minutes inside this mall. The stores are make you feel weird and like you want to spend your money elsewhere.
This mall is only a few minutes drive from my house via freeway...yet I never ever step foot in it anymore. Instead, I opt to go to Stanford, Stoneridge or especially Valley Fair where I find the shopping atmosphere to be much nicer and livelier. This place is just DEAD nowadays...it's plain sad to walk through and see all the empty stores and depressing atmosphere. You know, those type of stores that just make you wonder how they're still staying in business. =(
I hope that the developers do some major revamping...until that happens, I'll be staying away...
I want to have a tantrum every time I have to come here. I want to throw myself on the ground (once I'm away from the nastiness) and cry for all the minutes I lost wandering around this deserted, armpit of a mall. It's just so disgusting, I feel so gross after, like I need a shower. At least some anti-bacterial wipes! The people who work/frequent this mall make me depressed. I think I must depress other people when they see me here too.
The only good thing is they opened a Sorabol closed to a mall entrance so if I need a fast dose of korean, I can do it practically drive-by style.
Pros: shopping crowd is on the younger side; clean
Cons: small; few stores
I had never heard of or known about this mall until yesterday, mainly because I've never lived in the area (though I used to work in the proximity). It seemed pretty nice and clean. However, there weren't a lot of stores for me to go to. The whole point of a mall is how one can drive to one place and be able to find all the things he or she needs. This mall might not be that place unless you already know what you're looking for and that it's definitely here. I did, though, find a very cool frozen yogurt store that was called Orange Tree, which might have been opened recently since I didn't see it on the directory online. Apparently there was another one called Good Luck Yogurt Shop, which I didn't have a chance to visit.
If I were to come back, it'd be for the Orange Tree frozen yogurt.
We leased a space here from 2004-2006 and all I have to say is management is a joke. Horrible staff that doesn't respond to any requests or general questions. Mall security is crap... I don't know why the even have a staff when all they're doing is walking about with their friends. I hope they get bought out and restructured.
Till this day, I still have not received my deposit back.
As far as malls go.....this one should....its pretty don't get me wrong and maybe if i was 16 again and had hours to kill after school trying on clothes that I know mom wont let me wear this might be the place for me. I spent a couple of hours there this weekend taking the boyfriends 14 year old niece shopping along with his mom....Granted a good time was had by all but if I ever have to step foot in Hollister again I think I might end up trying to nail jello to a wall for the rest of my life at the loony bin...(They're coming to take me away HAHA)
I think the highlight of the whole trip was getting those yummy soft pretzels at Aunt Anne's/....god i love them things!!! The place is huge though and I was bored about half way through the mall....Clean yes, Well lit yes OMG DO I HATE THE FREAKIN MALL???? HELLLLLL YESSSSSSSSS
One word....okay, it's two. Forever 21. What happened?! This is the best location yet to shop for all the goodies in a cheap fashion! The mall is getting a little bit better. If Westfield can take over this mall and turn it into high-class fashion mall like Valleyfair....I would drive out of my way to come here. I will. Ya heard that right! ;D
I still remember this mall's glory days when I used to come here and blow my money on old navy... when old navy left, everything went down hill. Everything about this place has been said... G-H-E-T-T-O SUPASTA MALL
This mall is fun to walk to.
Yes, I go to Fremont via BART(I live in South Hayward) and walk down Mowry to it...Blaring my favorite metal bands(Therion, At the Gates, Morbid Angel, etc). Then once I get there I walk from one end to the other twice.
But this mall is disappointing and seems to be going the way of Bayfair. But many significant moments of my life have happened here...Like my first kiss with Jennifer Linney, an arguement with my girlfriend last week, etc...You know the good stuff.
But its great to walk to and well its safe. I think any of those desis are armed like the subprimal sapiens at Southland mall.
HOLY CRAP, I LOVE THIS MALL!!!!!
Wanna go Fremont Fatty watchin? Yup, that's what I said... Let's go to Newpark! It's so freaking awesome I almost crap myself just thinking about it! My favorite is seeing all the dudes in Ghetto Gowns. You know what I'm talking about. T-shirts that are more like night gowns but someone awesome like fiddy cent or cool moe dee said it's okay to wear night gowns with your jeans. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!
If you're into the whole mail order bride thing, this is your place to find them! There are dozens upon dozens of these for your viewing pleasure! My god, I love America!
Now if you like coming to a mall with stores you can actually find stuff in, this is not the place for you. This is not the kind of mall where you can actually find stuff to buy. This is the kind of mall where you people watch....that, or get your nails done. You pick.
If you are feeling down and want to find a place where you can judge others in silence, I highly recommend the Newpark mall. It's craptastic!
The end.
update 09-04-08
I got an awesome message from Hey P. who says... "you can tell you are young and stupid and probably didn't finish elementay school. do you know what ghetto sounds like? that would so be you!"
Thanks P! I think you're awesome too! Let's do lunch! Hhahahahaah!!! Wanna meet at the food court?
You can find Hey P. here.. http://www.yelp.com/us...
Well, I've never been to Rodeo Drive...mostly because I've got better things to do when I'm in LA (LACMA for instance), but I can still say with full confidence that this comparison is one hell of a stretch. If Rodeo Drive is the top (which I'm willing to bet it's not) this place is not far from the bottom (I've seen worse).
You will find lower quality versions of the same stores you find elsewhere selling merchandise for the same price. It gets two stars because the food court is decent and because they have a New York and Company.
Back in the day, say around the 80's and early 90's, Newpark Mall was da bomb!! I remember we used to beg our parents to take us here just because it was soo cool!
Unfortunately, this mall has gone downhill and I feel it may join the Mall Death List pretty soon. I came here not that long ago, just to check out the place after a 10 year absence. The first bad sign was that the interior of the place was exactly the same as it was when I was a kid. Most of the stores are all ma and pa ones, and there are a ton of dollar stores there. The Macy's is pretty sorry and the Mervyn's was on it's way out to a new location across the street (sadly only to end up closing just a few months later). Supposedly they are planning to build a movie theater there, which means one bad thing. The place will attract even more obnoxious teenagers to the ones that already exist there. This mall is also full of punks who think they are da shit reppin the Fremont-Newark-Union City area. And yes, I agree with Suzan S. about the huge elevator, which is the only good thing about this dump.
I sort of grew up with New Park Mall because I was a big fan of the Disney Store (of course I had to get the princess outfit for Halloween, duh) and the arcade.
Unfortunately, this mall has not much to offer and even the department stores don't stand true to their names (this is probably what bugs me the most, so don't question if I have been to a "ghetto-er" mall).
To begin with, the Macy's is the worst. I have only been to this mall twice within the last 5 years, and it was mostly to only swing by the make-up section at Macy's because ..well, make up is the same everywhere as long as you know your brand and products.
Back to Macy's. What really disappoints me is that everything is extremely disorganized. They do have a couple of more "affordable nicer brands" for every age group including Lucky Brand as well as I.N.C/Charter Club, and so on, but ...there is no way you will find anything ! All the clothes are scattered everywhere, they might look nice on the rack for the first thirty minutes when you go when the store opens.
Next...a lot of the merchandise is OLD! I have seen shoes there that came out in 06-07, still sitting there last month (Jan. 2008). Make it on sale at least. Please do bring out your new Spring merchandise. What are you waiting for???
The staff here is RIDICULOUS, as well. My mom went to the coat section and asked a sales representative for a particular brand, she gave a really peculiar look. First of all, this lady was dressed like a hobo (and worked at Macy's. You do not work at a clothing store if you can't even dress decently. and No, she wasn't dressed in a particular way for her religion, she was seriously dressed really bad!!!) and...shook her head. Is this your definition of friendly staff? This so called "employee" did not even speak English that well. She tried to tell us where there were more coats located, and I could not understand a word ...not even joking, and my parents are both immigrants so believe me, I can usually understand people with accents.
The food court(s) are standard, nothing fancy but it's not poor. You have your pretzels, Burger King, Julius juice, Starbucks and what not.
And although I'm going to be honest, the mall itself is clean and pretty neat, it either needs a makeover some way or another, or a new management team to brush up their stores, especially Macy's and Sears because those are horrible all around...as in poor selection of merchandise, unhelpful employees, bad staff overall, bad look overall, always messy.. (with the exception of the poor staff, most of these also apply to Sears as well.)
Thats all.
Why all the low stars? Have you been to Hilltop?
Some Yelpers think Newpark is a "ghetto" mall? Huh?
Are these folks used to shopping on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills?
I love this mall especially when comparing it to Hilltop and Sun Valley malls.
I love all the skylights, WOODEN (not concrete) benches, clean bathrooms, lots of escalators, great signage and the friendly staff.
I also love the Food Court with all the seating. ( Hilltop is falling apart and stores keep closing. They don't have a food court and finding a place to eat can be confusing. And they have only a few bathrooms which are very run down).
Unlike Hilltop with it's acrid air, the air in Newpark seemed breathable. Maybe the skylights help?
They have the standard mall stores and they all seemed well stocked.
I'd go there again soon if it weren't so far from me.
PS, Just read some of the other reviewers comments. Sounds like folks who remember it from the past, knew a different mall, Even though some of the stores have moved out, at least they have been replaced. At Hilltop it seems more shops are closing than opening.
I've known this mall for as long as I can remember and it's more depressing than ever. One side of the mall is almost completely dead. And it's the mall itself that's the problem. It doesn't look like it's been renovated since Scarface came out. I keep hearing about supposed future plans, but I've been hearing that since I was 13 so at this point, I'll believe it when I see it.
Most people I know go the extra distance to the other malls. And who can fault them?
Wow, I feel like half of the mall got the notice that there was supposed to be renovation and modernization and the other half just decided not to read the note and sell random shit. The day that we were they were holding a circus. Literally. Outside was a big top tent with some rides outside. Good Lord, where the hell am I?
We walked in, had lunch in the food court, walked around for a little more ... and left. Definitely will not be returning!
What a way to end a perfectly good 3-day weekend.
Yuck. Never again...
Although I did find some stuff at Crazy 8 for cheap.
