This place is ghetto, like more ghetto then the NYSC's I've been too but as an NYU grad student its free and I like it more then Palladium because you don't have the long waits for machines (I never wait, the cardo room is never more then half full here), you don't have the gym nazis kicking you off the machine after 20 minutes and there aren't as many manic anorexics on the treadmill which is always a bonus when you're trying to have a relaxing experience at the gym.
There aren't any TVs here, the climbing 'wall' is more like a 5x5 foot space, but there is a full size pool, basketball courts and when the weather is nice you can run on the roof or do yoga.

Alright for you NYUers. Here's a breakdown.
Alumnis should really look into memberships, the rate is 375 (however I think you pay more to start because you have to donate to either booster or the library or your school a set amount just once) for the year, which is a very good deal especially if either here or Palladium is conveniently located close to you.
Coles is the main NYU gym. They have 3 courts that can be separated individually, bleachers on all sides. the varsity teams practice here and they get dibs on the courts.
There are multiple levels to the place, starting on the roof there's tennis and a track.
Going down there are stationary bikes, racquetball, stretching areas along the hallways, cardio with bikes, stairmasters, treadmills (as recent as a year and a half ago there were only 5 treadmills, I'm glad they got wise to it), and basic weight machines. there are exercise rooms for things like yoga and calisthenics (there are many classes that you can sign up for during the semesters, all kinds of stuff that you can think of).
The ground level, besides the courts and more racquetball, is where the weights are. NYU is the largest private university in the country with what 19,000 undergrads alone. Its going to get crowded people, but the mornings and later evenings are dead so consider that.
There aren't actually a lot of meatheads; NYU isn't really known for athletics, and you won't see too many goons throwing weights and screaming. When they do, you have the right to smack them. both coles and palladium have pretty strict rules to keep people safe. the weight room is ample, they have almost everything most people need.
Oh there's a huge pool as well. If you swim and stuff.
The locker rooms are pretty big, you have the option of borrowing a lock everytime or getting a locker for the semester. The gym is very complete because it is used for so many different things, so equipment can be checked out, etc. The staff are all students, most very nice and helpful. The security guard is bored out of his or her mind.
Believe me though, this place is not ghetto. of the two, coles is definitely larger and frequented more, and darker and danker, yes, but its a well kept facility. See my review of Richie's gym in brooklyn, or better yet visit it and you'll get an idea of what a real city gym is like.
Overall a good gym because it has to provide all sorts of services, so take a look.

If you can wangle a membership, Coles is the best sports facility downtown. Full-size pool, gym, climbing wall, squash courts. All for $8 a visit, if you live in the neighborhood, and join the waiting list for "community membership".
