This place is awesome.  It is slightly reminiscent of the Soup Nazi place from Seinfeld.  Be ready with your order and your money in hand.  There is ALWAYS a line, especially on weekend mornings.   There seriously aren't enough parking spaces in the lot to hold all the cars waiting for bagel deliciousness.

They have countless flavors of bagels which are warm from the oven.  Their bagels taste great and are so soft inside.  They have a huge fridge full of homemade cream cheese.  They even make a few of their cream cheese flavors in low fat, if you're into that.

It is 5 am right now and I can't wait until they open this morning!!!

The bagels are great! They have a much larger variety than the regular bagel place (I mean you, Kaufman's). Husband and I went there to get bagels for the following morning. Even though we were there in late afternoon/early evening, they had steaming hot bagels ready to be sold. The service is quick, maybe because we were the only ones there.
I got a chocolate chip bagel that my husband was super jealous of. Suits him right for sticking with his regular everything bagels.

We usually go to Kaufman's because we can walk there, but I'm willing to drive and get my bagels the day before just so I can get them from New York Bagel & Bialy.

Warm, not sweet, chewy outside -- yep, that's what I call a bagel.  I brought some home to my bagel snob mom once, and she gave them the "they're okay" -- which is a shining recommendation coming from her.

The only bagel store worthy of being called a New York bagel. Only actual bagel flavors - sesame, poppy, onion, everything, egg and plain. They do have cinnamon raisin too and some mini-bagels in wried flavors like chocolate chip, but I tend to stay away from those. They also offer fresh bagel dogs and pizza bagels  in the morning, but they usually are gone early. You can purchase pre-packaged lox and some home-made cream cheese too.

I don't even like bialys all that much, but my hypothesis is that they are an essential cultural marker: places that sell bagels but not bialys are typically just selling round bread with a hole in it, without the chewy crust and texture that makes honest-to-god bagels unique, which is therefore only fit for barbarians and people whose doctors have instructed them to double their asiago cheese intake.

Suffice it to say, NY B&B sell freshly made authentic bagels (some so fresh that they warm up the whole bag) at a highly reasonable price. This place was an important part of my childhood -- lazy Sunday mornings with fresh sesame/poppy seed bagels and the big fat newspaper turned me into the twisted creature you see before you.

For heaven's sake, go already.

Good bagels and bialys for the Chicago area.  But pales in comparison to a real NYC bagel from Ess-A-Bagel.
