Never had a bad time here!  Don't get out as much as I use to, but do NOT want to miss DM night Saturday!  WOOT!  lol

Even though I don't drink anymore, I always feel my real age the next day!

    AWESOME!  Just AWESOME!

    SITREP

Legal Disclosure:  FULL BIAS & FANDOM ALERT!   And I am a DJ Skip & DJ Shindog club-groupie for life!

I just have to say, "I LOVE NEW WAVE CITY" and it will probably be the longest-lasting & preeminent club experience of my "clubbing life" (whatever THAT is and however one DEFINES such) which for me, at some point in the near(?), not-so-near(?) future, will probably manifest itself in different ways in the coming years.

I've been coming to the New Wave City (NWC) since the first year in 1994, though I can't lay claim to the first event - something my wonderful SF Yelping buddies KIMBERLY (the lovely gal who got me involved in Yelp in fact) and SUZANNE actually CAN lay claim too!  But apparently, longevity of loyal followers DOES bear some AWESOME FRUITS:  on the 5th anniversary of my coming to New Wave City (1999), I was presented with the rare NWC BLACK V.I.P. CARD (which I've treasured now for the last 12 years) and as the saying goes - "Membership Has It's Privileges" - I and my guest can attend NWC events sans cover on their VIP guest list.

    SET-UP

Oh how I miss former NWC stalwart venues such as the KING STREET GARAGE!  The TOWNSEND!  550 BARNEVELD!  BIG HEART CITY!  THE CHERRY BAR!

These venues were the sites of some of the BEST NWC-city themed events, special galas and hellaciously fun "80s Prom Nights".   Of all of them, I have to say I miss 550 Barneveld the most since it featured 3 separate rooms of dance excitement, and there was ample free street parking around the venue.  But then, it proved more cumbersome for people relying on mass transit to get there.  As always, in the end, there were the Pros and Cons of venue siting.

Until recently, NWC has resided at the DNA LOUNGE these last few years, and as a venue for this 80s Dance / New Wave Wunderfest, it acquitted itself very well!  The upstairs lounge presented wonderfully eclectic dance tracks with the likes of DJ Sage and DJ Melting Girl.  Often the awesome guest DJ talents of DJ Kenny Heggem and DJ Low Life and others would add to the eclectic & exciting dance fun.

Now NWC has sinced moved to the MEZZANINE (see companion-review posted simultaneously).  I wasn't sure if NWC would be going back to it's early days of roving from one venue to the next, but I JUST got DJ Skip's announcement for the next NWC - A Tribute to the CURE on May 14 - and it's back at the Mezzanine.  So it will be interesting to see if this becomes a permanent site from now on.

MUSIC FORMAT / AND OTHER REVIEWERS

The music truly rocks out and all event-DJs are consummate professionals in their DJ-craft.  Of special note:  this is obviously a club that puts "New Wave City" in it's very conceptual title, so for a reviewer to bitch out that all it's plays is "new wave" is both disingenuous and moronic.  But even worse, it's an outright LIE.  NWC prides itself in a VERY eclectic mix of music.  It even plays the latest & most edgy Industrial & ebm tracks in the 2nd room.  And in the MAIN room you will even get Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, and other mainstream artists from the 80s.

    THE DANCING

Dancing it what we come for and a stellar dance-environment is what we are provided.  You can't ask for any better.  AND there's more!  For the price of one dance environment, you also get, if you act now, BEAUTIFUL Go-Go dancers on raised dance areas, undulating sensually amidst swirly, psychedelic lights!  I love it!

    THE LOWDOWN

As a dance event, New Wave City remains the best and my alltime favorite club night that I can see myself still enjoying years and years to come, so long as our DJs Skip & Shindog, and our group of peeps keeps the momentum going.

This is my favorite dance club of all time.  DJ Skip and DJ Shindog play the best music, and I am a total 80's Alt Music Diva.  Not only is the music great and the atmosphere but I have met some of the nicest people that I count as friends there!  They have created a great atmosphere of fun and coolness!

I look forward to it every month, and even when I miss a few months I come back and it is like HOME.

    The BEST EVER.

FUN!  I had the best time.  Danced nonstop for nearly four hours and sang my head off.  Huge mix of ages and personalities.  Everyone was chill and doin' their thing.  Plus there's cool bartenders that are heavy handed with the boozey treats.  What's not to like?

Didn't try the food but the fact that they have it is handy for the drunkypants.  Crowded but not awful.  Not exactly spotless but show me a place that's been around that long that is.    I would come back in a heartbeat.

Walking in, you survey the crowd.  Yup, there's the purple-colored-tucked-in-shirt dude jumping around to The Dead Kennedys  There's the swaying goth chick, mouthing the words to Sisters of Mercy.  Here come baby-doll lesbians, bopping around to The Cure.  Older people, younger people, all dancing people.

You wanna know who's not here?  Slimy pick-up-on-you-while-you're-trying-to-dance guy, that's who.

Oh, and also missing is Stand-in-the-middle-of-the-dancefloor-sneering-at- other-ladies'-outfits-gal. She's not here either.

    Which is why I come.

Skip & Shindog do an amazing job of running this perfect monthly dance club - as they have for years.  Excellent 80's music.  Some old favorites, many obscure tracks, all very very danceable.

Come here to dance folks, and you will find friends of all shapes and perspectives.

OK, this has been my FAVORITE (yes, FAVORITE!) club for years, so I can't believe that it wasn't my first review on here.  I guess you sometimes forget those that you love the most...

This is the type of place where you don't need to be dressy or anything and nobody cares.  Everyone is friendly and they're just there to have a good time and dance.  Oh, and drink.  The drinks are out of control.  Seriously...the cocktails are strong!  I could tell you a story about my birthday weekend a couple of years ago....

    Anyway, back to the review...

The party is at DNA Lounge on the first Saturday of the month and there's always a theme for the evening.  Sometimes it might be a genre (like 80's synth music) and other times it might be a band that's highlighted (like The Cure, Depeche Mode, or Duran Duran).  They might pay special attention to the theme, but they still play a large variety of 80's New Wave.  The visuals are always fun to watch, too.  They might have a classic 80's movie playing in the background (like Rumblefish) and then occasionally interrupt the movie with the video of the song that's playing.  So cool.  Upstairs there's a smaller room, but the DJs there are spinning a great variety, too.  (Usually the upstairs room has more obscure and dark stuff, but you can definitely get your swoopy dance moves on up there, too.)

Skip and Shindog are the DJs who started New Wave City in '92 and I've been going regularly since '93 (yeah, I'm kinda old).  They take turns in the main room with a host of other great guest DJs, such as Melting Girl, Low-Life, Donimo, Tomas Diablo, and others.  These DJs really know their 80's New Wave!

If you loved 80's New Wave music and want to get your dance and drink on, I really can't recommend this club highly enough.  I would give it 6 stars if I could.  How's that for a fan?

Check out their website at http://www.newwavecity....  If you click the link for the Tribe at the bottom, it will take you to a screen where you can scroll through and see setlists from prior New Wave City events.

Have fun...I know this review is going to make you go!!

Wow, they pour a strong cocktail here!  A group of us visited NWC last night for the Duran Duran Tribute.  Man, I danced, my ass off!  They played music that made me feel 21 again. It wasn't too crowded and the crowd was loads of fun.

The videos are fun to watch.... they even had Better Off Dead on the screen for a bit.

It's been so long...I miss this place. Used to be a regular for several years but I morphed into a show/concerts gal and the years just flew by sans NWC. This is definitely a no nonsense, come to get plastered and DANCE club. Doesn't matter how 80s you dress, how hot or frumpy, no one is staring you down--unless you happening to be shredding on the dancefloor ; )
The DJs are all TOP NOTCH and dont play the typical top 40 80s that you're sick of hearing on commercial radio's flashback segments. The kooky peppy new wave and the sexy slick darkwave and synthpop are all here. I do have a secret wish that they would dig up the Stevie B and Expose freestyle tracks from time to time. Even some of the gothest goths rocked to Party Your Body.

This is not a place to come pickup -- not the prettiest of crowds but you're too busy dancing shuffle circles round folks a la Prince in Purple Rain so who cares? NWC is the only place where I can do my interpretive dance to Depeche Mode's Stripped and do the Molly Ringwald to the Plimsouls while Lane Myer skis the K-12 on the screen nearby, under one roof, drunk off Tokyo Teas.

    I love New Wave City.

The crowd is out to have a good time.
    People are friendly.
The DJ's are big time music fans that know this music inside and out.

They play a big range of 80's. Mostly early stuff pre 1986, which many will argue is the best of the era, and it is all over the map...the hits, the club smashes, cult classics, 7" and 12" versions,  goth flower pulling faves, skankin ska, synth pop, post punk, and one hit wonders.

"Upstairs at Eric's" (upper floor) ventures a bit more into the cool 12" club classic like CCCP, Fake, and Cetujavu. Industrial Goth and EBM from the 80's. Rare Synth Pop Gems.  More of the 4AD stuff like Xymox and Tones of Tail. You are likely to hear a favorite B side from years past, a forgotten favorite, as well as  "New York, New York" and "Dont Crash" here more than the Ramones and lighter upbeat modern rock that rules a good portion of the night in the main room-downstairs.

So nice to have a "similar yet different vibe" to venture to and from downstairs to upstairs.

I have played in the Upstairs at Eric's room several times with DJ Low Life and love how the crowd "get's it"...they KNOW the GOOD 80's! Everyone is dancing, drinking, cheering the night along...they appreciate it when "Phantom Bride" is playing over "Chains of Love".  The Duran, Erasure, Yaz, Smiths...etc nights that I have had the honor to DJ were always some of my favorite gigs.

I have to give Skip and Shin Dawg major props for creating what is a legend in the SF bay area.

The themes are a blast. Adam Ant, Vince Clark nights, DM, Erasure, Yaz, Siouxsie, Synth, Duran, Smiths.
Theme Wise-Basically they will play a little more of that featured band throughout the night...maybe 2 songs in a row, or show a cool video on the gigantic screen downstairs of the band. Often they have giveaways like signed posters, or the latest album from the featured legengary band. Upstairs will play a little extra of the under the radar cult classics of that band, and downstairs a bit more of the more known tune-age.

Still both rooms manage to showcase the music of all different styles and and types of popularity exceptionally well.

If you are living or visiting SF dont miss the "Disneyland of New Wave Music".  The crowd is pretty open ended, while many are dressed to the nines...casual is totally acceptable as well.

This IS the "Happiest Place on Earth" for New Wave 80's Freaks!

Get there pre 10pm to save some money on the door for one of their famous Tokyo Teas. Knock your ass OUT! The girl in the upstairs bar is HOT and way RAD too!

My absolute FAVORITE place to go dancing!!  The music at New Wave City is always great.  The DJ's are such nice guys - and they play a good variety of New Wave Hits.  No matter what your preference (ska, goth, industrial, new romantic, synth, etc.), you'll find something you enjoy dancing to there.
I love the mix of people that go to New Wave City. You'll see people in their 20's and in their 30's and in their 40's.  Gay, Straight, Old, Young, dressed up, dressed down, etc.  Everyone feels at home there.  This is one of the only clubs in town where people actually SMILE at you as you pass by.  It's a very friendly and welcoming vibe!!

THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE CLUB IN THE CITY.

Excellent tunes and interesting venue make Saturday nights fun and enjoyable. The crowd is super diverse (not the most beautiful) but there's no pressure to fit in so it's a STAR in my book.

I was extremely impressed with the breadth of music that was spinning upstairs in the more intimate area: Soft Cell, Peter Murphy, Smiths, Love and Rockets and much more.

Go and enjoy enjoy yourself at this really amazing club. Gay, straight, hardcore, conservative....everyone will enjoy this monthly club.

Love, love, love NWC!  So much fun to go with a group or just a good pal to dance the night away to some of the best New Wave! (no Bon Jovi or Mr. Mister here)  The regular crowd, djs and bartenders are laid back and make you feel right at home no matter which venue they are at that month.  Keep up the good job Skip and Shindog!

Great place to meet people. Way too crowded to dance in. Drunk people all over the floor and stage just standing around. Upstairs is where the music is but it's cramped and musty. Downstairs for some reason, the sound sucks. All I hear is mids, no highs, no bass. The Dj's here only beat mix upstairs. The concerts sounds are awesome. I think that's the only night they actually have a sound guy. If you're looking to dance, you'll have to wait around until 1am when the floor clears. It's nice that they have a very friendly coat check service or $3. It's also great that there's a kitchen inside. The beef tacos are phenom. 2 steak tacos and fixings for $5. Way better than pizza next door.

Is it a club, or a religion? People gather on Sunday morning (earlier than most services, like12 AM-3 AM)... listen to inspiring music... perform time-honored rituals... experience a sense of community... go forth with restored hope and faith.

The songs, and the dances of the people, in the depths of the night are worthy.  Long ago the tribes danced for for corn, for buffalo, for victory, for rain.  They vaguely knew the spirits would attend them, perhaps aid them.  Now the tribes of the great city carry on. You may well hear a rain dance... "Prayers for Rain", "Rain in the Summertime", "Hold Back the Rain",  "Here Comes the Rain Again", "Happy When it Rains", or just "Rain". You will probably hear a few rare lost cuts from excellent forgotten bands. You will hear plenty of music that is far better than anything on the radio today.  Best of all, you will not hear any rap.

To save the oppressed, 80s-starved masses suffering through the current musical Dark Ages, this party should be trademarked and franchised in every major city (LA, New York, Tokyo, Paris...), like Bootie is:

New Wave City provides 80's music parties on a monthly basis in various venues in SF.  The crowd is older but they are there to DANCE - that's the main theme.  It's really nice because you won't be harrassed.

Enjoy the music (early 80s music) and dance to your heart's desire!

I started going to NWC a couple years ago.  A friend of mine introduced me to this party, and I loved it!

Just went back to a NWC party after 2 years of being gone.  I didn't realize how much I missed this party!  The music is as always awesome!  There are 2 dance rooms @ DNA lounge, and both rooms play really good music!  It's so hard to pick which one you want to hang out in.. but eventually you are forced out of the smaller dance room to the larger room for some air.

The crowd is great!  I love the fact that you can go to this club and not care about what you wear or how you dance.  Everybody is there to have a great time!  Everyone that I have met here have been really nice and great.   Also, there's just enough people to make this party cool, but not overly crowded.

The staff is also awesome.  My friend hurt her knee while dancing and the staff was right there to help her out of the club.  They literally carried her out.

I agree with some of the other reviewers here, I do miss the days when it used to roam to other venues.  DNA lounge is also good though.

When I heard about New Wave City, I was ecstatic.  I love the 80s and anything new wave more than anyone I know.  However, this event kind of turned me off because they played nothing but new wave.  How about a little variety, people?  So, if you're a hardcore new wave junkie then you should definitely hit this up.  Otherwise save your visits for DNA Lounge for the Bootie Nights when variety is a guarantee..

Never miss NWC, always have to go, meet up with the gay posse, drink, dance, giggle and out right laugh at the crowd around us while reliving my high school years and playing name that tune.

New Wave City is one of our favorite clubs in SF !  Always have a great time dancing to the New Wave hits and being with our friends...
Bartenders at DNA pour STIFF drinks and you're sure to get a pretty damn good buzz on by the 2nd drink...
At the DJ booth they have a request list so you can request your faves, usually about 80% of the time they will play what you ask :)
We always enloy that they have tribute nights every month too!
Most nights are a blast, buth they get their off nights and sometimes  you wish you stayed home....
Good mix of people and you dont really get the lame lurkers or wierdos harassing you...mostly older crowd of late 20's to 30's, goths, ex goths, new wavers, post punkers, hipsters, some rock n rollers depending on what tribute night it is :)

What happens when all the background characters in a John Hughes movie grow up?

They wind up at New Wave City!

I was there last night for its Duran Duran tribute night...and it was great!

Granted I love Duran, so I know I'd like the music, but if Duran Duran isn't your cup of tea, there was music to be had.

There were lots of interesting people to see (if you're a people watcher) and ever more people who were friendly and approachable (if you're more of a people talker to).

The venue has two dancefloors...one big one with a stage downstairs, and a smaller alternative dancefloor upstairs...both sounded amazing and were full of dancers.

    VERY worth going

It's my home away from home. New Wave music is like comfort food that soothes the soul of the John Hughes/ 'latch-key'/MTV generation. It's still some of the best music that ever existed and is still infectiously danceable. Admit it, when you hear a New Order song over the speaker system in Safeway, you can't help but do a little dance in the cereal aisle. It transports you back to a more simple era before cell phones, the Internet, IPods and when MTV used to play videos and 160 Minutes.  New Wave City is just as good as dancing at home alone in your pajamas to your favorite Smith's or Cure albums, only here you've got someone to mix your drinks and change your CDs for you. Oh, and almost never will some random drunk and horney guy come bumping and grinding on your leg, without your permission, of course. Here, you are a star. Come as Morrissey, Andy Warhol, Dave Gahan, Molly Ringwald or even the Easter Bunny and you will be respected as such as you dance on the band stage or go-go platforms. Yes, NWC is like Fantasy Island that way.

Thankfully this club is overlooked by the Paris Hilton/Lindsey Lohan wannabees and people here are mature adults, unlike *some* monthly clubs I won't mention (see my review on Bootie. And the chick that wrote the review after mine...she's the one that spills drinks on people on the dance floor). Everyone is a freak here and proud of it.  Each to his/her own is the attitude here and all are welcome with one caveat; people frown upon drunken bachelorette party girls who pile their purses and jackets in the middle of the dance floor and dance around it like some strange ritual. Just pay a few bucks at the coat check so that you don't take up precious dance floor space. NWC promises a good time for all, young and old. For a few hours, the evil accouterments of the 21st century are magically erased from your mind as you dance while reminiscing about the first time you made out in your Dad's car while listening to Depeche Mode. Good times.

I miss the days of when NWC was a roaming club. I seems like anytime I go out to the city I end up at DNA. I'm sick of this venue. And also add the fact that Leisure is on the same nights which sucks since it takes away the NWC crowd I know. I know go to Leisure but I hate that venue more than DNA. Before the music was fantastic. but now the music has become as predictable as where the venue is going to  be. I  miss the days of seeing other venues where I had never been. the days it would be on king street or raw hide or 550 barneveld. but if you want a strong drink (go to the upstairs bartender) and music to dance to after 5 or 6 drinks then go to NWC and if you see me there you should buy me a drink!

I'm with Lance. This club used to be soooo much FUN - especially when it moved around from venue to venue. Now that it has been "living" at DNA, it's become extremely repititious and bleh... The only thing good about this location is the jumbo drinks upstairs and the pizza place next door. :) When NWC was at the Mezzanine back in January '07 it was probably the funnest time I have ever had at this club. I also loved the Rawhide location until their sound system took a dump. I always had super fun when it was at 550 Barneveld too. NWC and DNA need to take a break from each other. Other than that... my life pretty much evolves around dancing to new wave and therefore NWC is a staple for me.  :) I just wish it lived somewhere else.

i have a love/hate thing (but more love) with new wave city.

    love:
-the upstairs room playing more of the post-punk stuff.
-dna is a good size to accomodate lots of people.
-i usually have fun here, especially if i go with a bunch of my girlfriends.
-the crowd: though partly cheesy, i like the diversity.  people seem to have fun and don't generally bother you.

    hate:
-dna and the drinks that are misrepresented/overpriced.  (strong though!)
-sometimes they tend to play the same overplayed 80s hits and it'd be nice to hear something a bit more obscure thrown in once in awhile.
-the crowd: can get too crowded and some of the patrons are annoying.
    -OVERPRICED.  $12 for dna, wtf.

Only hit this for one night but man, LOVED the dj- cool handling skills and nice guy! This place I'd never been too on the New Wave night but highly recommended. Would be really cool if they got some true wannabees dressed in 80s gear ("actors") that we all saw in those 80s clubs. Very cool vibe! It's ok not to wear black..

I felt a little out of place since I was the ONLY ONE wearing pink....and everyone else was in the black. Very eclectic mix of people that could only be in SF. I was definitely over stimulated and a little deaf after wards with the LOUD (I mean LOUD) music, Gothic crowd, and grandma trannies. Four stars because it was fun, everyone danced, and really appreciated the DJ. Will come again and appropriately dress for the occasion.

I'll just be honest right off the bat: this is going to be an outrageously biased review. After all, I've been going to NWC for 13 years (please don't do the math), so these folks are practically family. I actually love that they're at home at DNA now because DNA is my favorite venue and NWC is my favorite roaming dance club: a marriage made in heaven. The founders of the club are still the primary DJs there. Plus, some of the best new wave DJs in SF spin at NWC. I rarely take anyone to NWC because going to NWC is like going to church for me. I'm not very social when I'm there because it's ALL ABOUT THE DANCING. No kidding. I'm not there to find a guy. In fact, it annoys me when I'm interrupted mid-dance to get asked, "Do you want to dance?" Um...waddya think I'm doin? Not really anyone's fault. I guess lots of people go out to dance to get laid. And it doesn't really help that I wear teeny tiny skirts, so I'll stop complaining now :) And, yes, the Marina crowd can get annoying especially when they arrive in droves, but they're paying for the expenses of keeping the club going. Capitalism is a double-edged sword. Living in SF has taught me that.
