We lived for a year in Cambridge, MA, the land of what my husband calls the "no-sugar, wheat-flour-only aesthetic" bakery. I have to admit I love wheat bread, barely-sweet scones and chocolate cake so dark it's bitter (check out the Hi-Rise Bakery in Harvard Square for the platonic ideal), but I can see his point. So when we moved back to Baltimore he was overjoyed to find New System Bakery down the street from our new house. Sugar is their main ingredient. In the baked goods, and slathered on the top of everything for good measure. Best of all, breakfast for us and the 2 kids - $6 here - would have been $20 in Cambridge, easily.
But we've cooled off on the place now that we all suspect that type II diabetes is setting in...

The NSB is a general purpose bakery, selling everything from donuts to bread, but the quality varies significantly between products (I'm not a big fan of standard cookie and cake frosting).
My favorite is the cinnamon bread -- it turns into irresistible french toast.
With the new, larger, location comes new treats: breakfast is now served, adding eggs and coffee to the normal assortment of unhealthy morning delights.

Stop here if you have a few bucks left and need some good food and coffee.
Saturday morning I am usually in the mood for a bacon egg and cheese on a fresh croissant.
The donuts are melt in your mouth good. Probably not the best thing in the world for you, but damn are they tasty.
