A great little mini mart that offers at least 3 flavors of frozen yogurt :)
The downside is that the frozen yogurt is pretty pricey at 50 cents per ounce (compared to 6 cents per ounce at Yogurtland, par exemple). BUT, I forgive them because it's pretty nice of them to have self-serve fro-yo at a place that probably doesn't get that many people coming specifically for their frozen yogurt.
Plus, it tasted pretty good(I've had vanilla and pumpkin here), and for a non-specialty fro-yo place, the toppings were good. Of course, no fruit, but nevertheless, I was pretty impressed by their topping selection.
The man working here was also very nice :)
PLUS: Convenience - I usually do my grocery shopping on Polk Street but sometimes walking four blocks downhill proves to be a much longer journey than walking uphill one street up.
PLUS: Friendly encounter - I walked in one morning for a little shopping and Philip was as nice as can be. He told me a little about the history of NRHML. He also proved that they had everyone on my short shopping list: cereal, milk, fresh coffee beans, lunch meat, tp, etc.
PLUS: Family owned business - rings close to home for me.
PLUS: Clean and well kept.
PLUS: Fresh coffee beans smelled delicious!
MINUS: No labels for yogurt.
The first time I ever went here was to get their frozen yogurt.
The set up is filled with a variety of toppings - a sweet tooth lover's dream. It is clean and again there are options to custom your yogurt.
I'm pretty much a plain Jane and opted for vanilla with caramel and fudge topping.
Unfortunately, the caramel was actually peanut butter topping. Who even makest that? (Sorry peanut butter lovers.) I have a peanut allergy and needless to say my stomach turned rotten and my yogurt experience with NRHML was ruined.
While I know I should've checked (taking some responsibility here), I think it would be nice if they labeled their bottles. Most places have nut allergy warnings. Just a suggestion for NRHML.
The whole peanut thing and maybe the prices have me on the fence between 3 and 4 stars, but I think Philip saved the day with his morning friendliness.
Plain and simple, they've got good frozen yogurt and toppings. Is it OMG! frozen yogurt? No. Is it tasty? Yes. ...Take from that what you will.
Their deli counter looks fairly legit too.
Eh, I'll add another star for the guy behind the counter being nice.
Ask for free samples of the yogurt before initiating your cup.
Self serve.
If I need emergency self-serve fro-yo, this place is perfect. Not nearly as good as IceBee, but it suffices. I've had a few items from the deli counter, and it was solid. They have a decent grocery selection which I found out when I was craving plain yogurt and honey to put on it. Basically I am always craving something ridiculous because I am drunk, hungover, lonely, what have you, and I can usually find it at the Market. Plus the owner is always nice and never judges me. I've bought beer and wine there also (obviously) and the selection is fine, just fine.
This place is, BY FAR, the BEST CORNER STORE IN THE CITY. And I totally mean it. Not only did I survive for practically a year off their scrumptious made-to-order sandwiches (which I affectionately call "CornerStoreSandwiches"), but also their fantastic fro-yo kept up my sugar high this summer. They have MOCHI toppings! Need I say more? In the morning they have fresh coffee for me, and they'll listen when I make outlandish requests for certain wines. (For real!) Plus, they remember your name there and treat you like a friend, not a customer. This corner store is one of the many reasons I love living in SF.
standard little market...they're all a little pricey, but convenient.
what's kicks in the extra star is the friendly owners and the frozen yogurt--which is charged by weight so make sure your eyes and stomach are in line before you lay on that extra layer of frozen goodness...leftovers could drain your beer/wine fund for a couple days.
Fro-yo, Fro-yo, Fro-yo...I'm so freaking sick of that term it's literally making my skin crawl. I can't go a day without hearing some insipid, Us Weekly reading bimbo raving about her Fro-yo.
And then I turn to yelp for my escape from reality and there are a dozen new reviews for the brand new tuttimelon and 4 new lists about "Where I go for my Fro-Yo Fix!" Jesus, stop the insanity!
Not that I really have anything against frozen yogurt (though I'll personally take soft serve ice cream). It's just that term that gets to me like nails on a chalkboard. Fro-Yo! Bleh!
I can't fully understand it because I'm generally a huge fan of neat little wordy tricks like alliteration, consonance and assonance.
Seriously though, when did frozen yogurt come back into vogue? I vaguely remember it in the 80s and I remember a mid 90s Seinfeld episode about fat content. But it went away for awhile and all of a sudden it's back, with a vengeance...and a gratingly annoying nickname.
On to the review: The New Russian Hill market has an impressively complex setup for what otherwise appears to be a typical neighborhood market. Four different machines serving frequently rotated flavors, (the white chocolate macadamia was admittedly pretty good) and a wide variety of toppings.
Speaking of which: Girls, you do realize that after you swirl in the gummy bears and reese's pieces and shit you might as well just get the pint of Ben & Jerry's you secretly crave, right?
But if I am going to get dragged out for a "healthy" dessert, no tuttimelon for me...thank you very much. Take me to the New Russian Hill Market that will also sell me the pack of marlboros and the half pint of Jim Beam that *I* secretly crave.
Seriously...White chocolate macadamia, heath bar bits and a "healthy" splash of bourbon? Now THAT'S dessert...and booze is fat free too!
You know, I really like this place!!! I love coming here and getting Fro-Yo.. They have a good variety of toppings.. I personally like the raspberries.. I love it when they have the cake batter fro-yo on tap, yo!!
I love New Russian Hill Market. Sam and he son are so friendly and welcoming. The location couldn't be better for me . I'm eating self-serve frozen yogurt as I type this! They DO have fresh berry toppings... I saw someone wrote they don't so I wanted to offer an update. They also have a large selection of veggie, all-natural and soy products!
I feel lucky to have The New Russian Hill Market as my corner store!
First off, the place is kept very clean, the owners are always friendly and they have pretty much anything I forget at the store.
My first week living in San Francisco, my roommate and I popped down for a deli sandwich here and it was delicious. They have all fresh ingredients and create a sandwich big enough to share.
Probably the best part is the Fro-Yo! They have different flavors every day and the topping choice is amazing. They do a layer of toppings then layer of Fro-yo twice!
Fro-yo girl here. I'm feeling like an old pro when it comes to going to liquor stores for fro-yo now. New Russian Hill is more of a market than a liquor store in appearance though. The fro-yo machines are to the right when you enter. They have one tart flavor a day (either strawberry, blueberry, raspberry or mango tart). I like how they've got their fro-yo schedule posted on their website, so you'll know which four flavors (all non-fat I believe) they have that day in advance and can plan accordingly: http://www.newrussianh...
I went on a Monday so they had Cable Car Chocolate, Cookies & Cream, Blueberry Tart and Peanut Butter. French Vanilla was on the schedule but they ran out, so they switched to Cookies & Cream.
I tried the blueberry tart. It's definitely icy and it has a noticeable tartness. The flavor was so-so because it tasted like blueberry syrup. At least it wasn't bland. I wasn't really in the mood for an average cup of tart fro-yo, so I chose the Cookies & Cream instead ($3.50 for a small). It was good - sweet, creamy, chocolatey with vanilla flavor. The portion size was okay, nothing close to Yumi Yogurt though, and the price is on the expensive side.
I couldn't see the toppings, but the sign said that they have cookies, candy, sprinkles, nuts, graham cracker crumbs, mochi, and fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries). They probably have about 2 dozen toppings. I've decided not to order fruit toppings unless I can see them.
Prices: S ($3.50)/ M($4.25)/ L($5)/ XL($6)
I'm curious about the sandwich counter, which looked clean and features Boar's Head meat and cheeses. Hot sandwiches are available. The made-to-order sandwiches are $6.49. They also sell wine, beer, canned foods, frozen foods, pet food, cereal, and even some fresh produce.
There is one parking spot in front of the store where you can park for 10 minutes. Parking in that area is horrible but if you do find a space, you'll have it for two hours. Chinatown is three or four blocks from the market.
You know you love me. X0 X0, fro-yo girl.
Good, not great prices, with good not great selection. All in all, a great
little neighborhood store, if you live within a few blocks, and need some
quick food or drink.
They are not cheap, but the economic realities of running a small store
in this part of Nob Hill do not favor low prices. The convenience of being
able to pick up something for dinner, drink or dessert in 5 minutes,
more than makes up for a slightly higher price.
And they got frozen yogurt. Sweet! Figuratively and literally.
These guys are awesome. They run the store pretty late, and the nob hill sized frozen yogurt has made me feel good on some bad days.
Yeah, it's expensive. but if it saves me walking down/up any freaking hills, I'm all for paying another buck for soap.
Love it.
Really good frozen yogurt! My boyfriend used to live right next door to this place so we often made fro-yo trips to here. The yogurt flavors change all the time, but the toppings are awesome. The guys that work here are so nice. A bit pricey for yogurt but delicious, especially when the San Francisco weather decides to get hot for a couple days.
Neat little family market near the top of Pacific. It's about 3/4 of the way home so a little tart FroYo is a welcome treat to finish off my day. Yes, it's commercialized FroYo, and yes, it's expensive, but it's really satisfying and I'm a sucker for that stuff. Damn temptation :(
The rest of the store is similarly overpriced so avoid it if at all possible. There's also a fee to use your credit card.
Sam, Ramses, Joe (and his incredibly beautiful wife, who's around occasionally) run a tight ship. They are five stars all the way. I don't have a clue about fro-yo, however I'm sure it too is excellent. The sandwiches Sam makes are great; his sons need to take lessons from him. Sam is also one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. Service is excellent (he should be running Whole Foods - they'd get better reviews!), products are great, welcoming atmosphere, nice neighborhood; I understand Sam is friendly with Sean Connery and has made a movie or two with him, but that's another story. The New Russian Hill Market - go there, get a sandwich, buy a beer, stock up on groceries, maybe even try a fro-yo..., you won't be disappointed!

Love this little store. It's always clean and the guys who work there are always so kind and friendly.
If you have a chance to try their frozen yogurt you should, it's heavenly!
Very overpriced, but I guess most stores charge for "convenience".
The shopkeepers are really nice though. Family run. They are genuinely nice folks.
My obsession of frozen yogurt has continued. It is also an entrapment that this corner liquor/grocery store, which is walking-distance from my crib, serves my current favorite frozen treat.
I do my grocery shopping elsewhere, because the grocery's prices are higher from here. For example, a quart of milk costs $2.25. "Ouch!"
The store only has two different flavors daily, but changes flavors everyday. Today, I had the French Vanilla in a 5 oz. cup. For $3.50, the frozen yogurt was swirled mountain-high and plenty enough for me, also good enough with another partner or date. Additional topping is $.75 each and I got crushed Reese's with my treat. With limited topping selections, they don't have fresh fruit toppings or mochi ball unlike other fro-yo places. The French Vanilla frozen treat tasted very similar to a soft-serve from McDonald's, but better and creamier.
I thought the fro-yo treat was very good and priced reasonably for a corner store. And since this corner store is in close proximity from my house, I can buy the fro-yo and take the treat home, enjoy and yelp.
It is here! Fro-yo in Russian Hill! They offer a daily rotation of flavors with two categories to choose from: regular and tart, and they have a number of toppings listed on the chalkboard, including a small variety of fresh fruit =)
i usually get a small combo (which can actually be considered a large in most other places) of the regular and tart flavor of the day with a handFULL of mochi, for under $4.
Seriously, the order in which he prepared my fro-yo was this: line the empty cup with mochi; dispense half cup of fro-yo and pack; add another layer of mochi; fill fro-yo wayyyy to the top; sprinkle with more mochi and serve.
I walk 20blocks for this on my lunch, people.
I am totally screwed. Frozen Yogurt only 3 blocks away from the new apt? I am lactose intolerant but I looooove fro yo.
While putting together the nearly impossible dresser from IKEA last night, it got hot in hell and I needed some fro yo as did my roomie. Went here at 10:45 pm and the 2 gentlemen were SO friendly. Delicious fro yo and a lot of topping selection and they aren't stingy with the toppings. I hate when places are. They piled on my reeses! Hooray!!
Very friendly service AND fro yo with toppings?A little pricey- but I remain dedicated to fighting my inability to digest lactose and will keep eating. I just hope I don't become obese. Maybe the walk up hill and down hill will help me out. Yum!
Awesome corner store. 8/10 on the upscale, um, scale. It's run by a sandwich-making master and his two sons, all very friendly. And by sandwich-making master, I mean Sandwich-Making Master. The best deli sandwiches I've found in the city, except for maybe Marina Subs.
Not especially cheap, but if you live in Russian Hill, this is a good place to get provisions and a great place to get a sandwich.
Sometimes I just need an onion and they always have an onion. You get the idea.
And I think this market appears in "The Rock" at the end of the car chase sequence near the beginning. Ya know?
Great yogurt! Quick, friendly, and unpretentious.
Raspberry tart + gummy bears = heaven. The store is always clean, owners are great and the frozen yogurt is awesome. It's a bit pricey, but definitely worth it!
I feel like these guys are my family. I certainly see them more often! Great place for a quick sandwich, pasta to cook at home, and of course the frozen yogurt. Generous and kind people - support your corner store! I used to live on Telegraph Hill and was so sad when Speedy's closed.
Four stars for my gratitude to have a regular convenience store close to home again. This shop was closed for what seemed to be years, only to reopen nicely remodeled and ready to go. The old neon sign outside needs replacement. I'm serious.
I have been a semi-regular here for years. Not so much now that I work evenings and my beer drinking days are virtually over. I stopped smoking too, so I no longer buy cigs there. It is kind of cool that it has remained "retro" chic. They make great sandwiches, the kind you used to get as a kid with shredded lettuce, yellow mustard and white bread. Yeah, like I said...it's retro, baby.
They could probably yuppify their selections and make more money by doing so however. I'll say this again you guys, if you're reading this - get a new sign. Really.
The things at this market are expensive & overpriced . BUT the yogurt is pretty good .. well I've only tried the Cookies N Creme so far but I will be sure to try more in the future :) The sandwiches are okay but nothing special .. they're kinda overpriced .
This place reopened after a long hiatus, and it's a little oasis in the saddle neighborhoods between Nob and Russian Hills.
What's nice about this place, and indicative of it's locale, is that it's clean and remodeled, and offers fresh coffee and sandwiches. The selection is kind of generic, and they're still working on it; I expect it to 'evolve' to the tastes of the neighborhood over time. Expect more noodles ...
Still, convenience is pretty nice, and not having to hike up to Le Beau or the VC is great. If I need something I can just run down and grab it from the Russian Hill Market without too much hassle.
This little market is not too bad. The prices are about as outrageous as any neighborhood shop and the guys that work there are pretty friendly once you get to know them. I'm not sure what took them so long to remodel the place a couple years ago, but they've done a pretty good job. My only real complaints are the prices and the fact that when they get shipments of things it takes them a while to unpack and clear the aisles sometimes.
Gloriously amazing in every sense of the word. The friendliest people ever.
Have you been on the same kind of frozen yogurt hunt in this city that I have? Hunt no more buddies! Plus they got all kinds of flavors that rotate daily. I love it. The selection of beers, coffee, and other stuff is way more varied and higher quality than what corner stores usually offer, and they make great deli sandwiches too. But the best part of this place is the family that runs it. It's the first place in Nob Hill I really felt was neighborhoody because of how nice and warm they are!
all the dudes that work here are cool and the beers ber cheap. Its totally cheaper than safeway. The sanwiches are a little expensive but I love them and the coffee is way gnarly.and frozen yogurt ooh la la la la la la la. I'm glad they opened, I was buying over priced beer and eating expensive crud .thanks Russian hill market!!!!!
Frozen yogurt. That is all that needs to be said. Actually, Hubby and I talked to the owner/owner's son and he said they are going to have Pink Berry style yogurt and will be adding another machine and fresh fruit. I am super excited! He also said that the Pink Berry lady is moving her show to the East Coast/NYC and not up here.
One of the better looking corner stores around. I was lured in by the arrival of their fro-yo machine, painted fro-yo in the windows and a wooden cut-out of a cup of fro-yo by the front door. Alas, it just tasted sweet with no real distinction of flavors. I will be hoofing it back over to Union and Fillmore when the craving strikes. Nice guy, though.
this store is a rip off... not only are the prices expensive they charge you a dollar fee to use a card....
