NLMSCHM (whew!) is a quaint little building located in downtown New London along the water. Anyone visiting from out of town should stop by to get a feel for the rich nautical history of New London. The exhibits are executed well and there is a lot to see in such a little space.

Plus, they also have events every so often featuring speakers that have a vast knowledge of New London as well as the ships that have passed through their waters.

this is a super tiny museum, but it has the greatest Educational Director on the east coast. i'm not saying that because she's my best friend, i'm saying that because i owe her money.

the first time i toured the museum i was like 'what?! that Amistad thing really happened?' then i thought, why am i in connecticut right now? anyway, i do love looking at doodads from back in the day, and this place has a lot of them.  the highlight of my visit was the presentation of scholarships to local students who created essays, poems, etc about seafaring and black people (i am not joking).  The two winners had their works read aloud and THEN an actor came in from the state library, in full civil war costume relating the story of a real black soldier in connecticuts first black regiment.  he was excellent.

plus there was free booze.  oh that's why i was in connecticut...
