18 reviews for New Line Tavern
This place is walking distance from the office, which makes it a great, new after work bar. Our whole company came to celebrate a recent victory, and they were very accommodating to our large crowd. While they were a little slow, it was to be expected since 50-something people bum-rushed this place!
A few weeks later, a co-worker and I came here for lunch and were definitely satisfied. We both got burgers and they were delish AND under $10.
Our hostess and server was courteous and prompt, and the decor was super cool. I will definitely be back!
Yeah for another neighborhood bar in the West Loop. New Line Tavern helps fulfill that a bar every two blocks quotient that I grew up with in Wisconsin. I came here on a lazy Sunday afternoon when my husband could no longer stand the growing number of boxes in our apartment for the move.
The bar itself is nicely lit with rich, dark banquettes lining one wall and a long bar with high stools. I found my husband watching the Packer game on one of the four screens above the bar, chatting up the staff and patrons, and enjoying an Allegash White. Before I arrived, he had already tasted some of their fare. He enjoyed the tavern wings and chicken strips. He said that the barbeque sauce was good, but the honey mustard was alright.
Once I situated myself, I got an Allegash White and checked out the food menu. I ended up having a burger with cheddar and New Line fries (Asiago cheese and garlic). The burger was delicious complete with a tasty pretzel roll hit the spot. The New Line fries were alright. Frankly, they weren't the best fries ever, but decent. Asiago cheese really does make the bar smell cheesy. If they laid off the cheese and served it with garlic aioli, they would be fantastic.
I enjoyed my lazy Sunday at New Line Tavern. I like the bright, cozy bar where you can read the menu without squinting. I also liked the laid back feel of the bar. If I wasn't moving, I would be a regular here for their great beer selections and yummy food.
Gotta to love a new place to go in the "neighborhood". Okay. So the New Line Tavern is not in my neighborhood- but a friend's, but that's okay since now I get to see him AND have a drink in this refurbished space.
The New Line is located in the old Beaux Arts style building which used to be the powerhouse for the Chicago Railroad. Being an old refurbished space lover- I like that the bar kept the original tile window surrounds intact- the chips and imperfections adding interest to the space along with the tin relief ceiling tiles. The walls hold photos of the original building use which was to power the train from Chicago to Milwaukee that was then called the "New Line"- thus the name.
The bar runs the length of the room and there are tables and chairs scattered about. We sat at the bar so service was quite good (they even sent someone out to a nearby 7-11 to get more Red Bull for my friend's drink) and the drinks were strong and quick to be refilled. And if you are looking to watch your favorite game- there are plenty of TV's around.
We ordered some food for snacking- wanted to try the two kinds of wings that they tout- their namesake "New Line Tavern wings" and a more expected deep fried hot wing. Funny. If I was going to put my name to something- it would be the best thing in the house. And take it from me- the New Line Tavern Wings are nothing to write about. Even the sauce that they served with them was rather bland. Stick with the tried and true. Hot wings with blue cheese and celery- you can't go wrong there!
Street parking is easy in this area. Bartenders are engaging and social-able (thanks Evan) and the prices are reasonable.
Glad to know that the words "New Line" are back in today's nomenclature with a new usage. For the New Line tavern's goal is the same as it's namesake. Making people happy. And isn't that what is has always been about?
Nothing special, everything typical: food, drinks, patrons. It's a tavern...no pool table, no games, no dart board; just a typical bar with food/drinks... nothing else to do.
Burgers are good. Then again...who really makes a bad burger?
Its 4:30 I have 2 hours to kill before I go to my later event. Hmmm....I passed by this new bar earlier today. I could go check out this new bar while I wait. Sure. Why not...we say.
We sit at the bar. Order a glass of wine and a beer. Look up and there is a display of TVs something to entertain you while you hang out. Crowd starts to flow in around 5-5:30pm. We didn't order anything off the menu but we'll do so on later date.
Over all this bar is a cool hang out spot for after work since its walking distance from my job. Good service. Friendly staff.
More like a bar that does a decent lunch business. The problem is that the lunch business is so go the place can't keep up.
All of the tables were filled at lunch except for a tiny corner of the "communal table". We decided to sit at the bar.
The order consisted of the New Line Salad, Santa Fe Chicken Salad, and the 4 Cheese and tomato panini with a side order of New Line fries.
The panini was just OK. Really overdone on the cheese and I love cheese but it tasted more like a processed grilled cheese sandwich. The salads I was told were good, but disappointing that the new line salads didn't come with avocado. The fries had a garlic butter sauce over them with melted asaigo cheese. Could've used more cheese and less sauce since the fries were greasy.
Serve was mediocre. They could use an additional waitress and/or hostess. The bartender, though friendly, was swamped. Our food came out in three sections, not very well timed.
There were many business women sitting at the corner of the bar. The first comes in, in a suit, does a shot and leaves. Whew, must've been a rough morning. Two others come in, sit down at the end of the bar, and by time we left, they were on their third beer. Whew. Must be prepping for the remainder of the day.
Looked like a secent selection of microbrews on tap.
I do have to say that the prices were pretty reasonable for being downtown and in the loop.
I am on the fence between 3 and 4 stars so I'll give the place the benefit of the doubt since they are new and hope they iron out some of the kinks. It's in a good location close to my and other offices.
I've been here twice now, once for drinks, and tonight for a little dinner after work. Tonight I had the crab cake sliders, and my date had the shrimp po' boy. I think the sliders were good, not unique and not bad. They were a little light on the remoulade, as was the po' boy, so we asked for some extra, a request that was quickly and cheerfully granted.
The po' boy wasn't quite as good as the sliders, but it was OK. I think it could have used more shrimp, my girlfriend thought it could have used less bread. I guess either way it would have been a better sandwich. We both had the thin-cut fries, which I found lightly salted, but still fairly yummy. I think they are trying to mimic the fries at Paramount, but they are not quite hitting it. You need to serve them with garlic aioli, guys...
They do have Three Floyds Gumballhead in bottles, which is among my absolute favorite beers, so I have to give them props for that. The service was prompt and friendly. The food is good, but not spectacular.
Overall, it's not a bad place. Good service, decent beer, and a pretty basic bar menu. It is very convenient from my office, so I will definitely be back, but they will have to make some changes in the kitchen before New Line can seriously compete with some of the other restaurants in the area for the affection of my taste buds.
Service awful! Went on a Sunday night to try the food and watch football. Nice looking place but only 3 tables of people and after taking a drink order, the waitress basically went and sat at the bar to have a conversation with someone at the bar and the bartender. Never got our drinks and she never came to take our order after 10 minutes so we just left. Can't comment on food but the people at the table next to us said service was also terrible and they waited 40 minutes for food. Not a good first impression of an otherwise promising place.
Place seems cool. I like all the t.v.'s at the bar and how they aren't overwhelming. Staff is really friendly and knowledgeable especially for a place that just opened. Food looked pretty good although I was only there to catch the end of a baseball game.
The smell of asiago was every where, I think it is a staple in a good amount of stuff they have on the menu and I can see that bothering some people. I didn't mind it.
It is a bit disheartening to see that 2 of the 3 reviews of this place are more then likely fakes but whatever. In time I'm sure a true rating of this place will balance out.
Let me start by saying that the best thing about my dinner at New Line was the beer, and I had Bud Light so that's not saying much.
Our server was flighty and pretty much absent the entire evening. When we finally got her attention, we asked if we should try the Calamari or the Mini Crab Cakes as an appetizer. She quickly answered Mini Crab Cakes. They were terrible - bready, chewy, bland balls.
Moving on - I had the Panko-Bacon Salmon Salad and my husband had the Pullman Burger. My salad was OK. I asked for the dressing on the side, the dressing came on it. It wasn't a salad that I would crave and go back for anytime soon.
My husband ordered his Pullman burger medium, and it came WELL done. No cheese (you have to add that on your own for an extra dollar; we didn't realize; I believe a "signature" burger should taste it's best when ordered as is off the menu). The pretzel bread didn't do much for us either. Overall the sandwich tasted over-cooked and dry.
To top it off, my husband ordered a second beer halfway through our meal and it never came. Not only did it not come, our server admitted she gave it to the wrong table.
This place has a lot to live up to given that our neighborhood bar, Jefferson Tap, serves great food in an even better atmosphere. So far, New Line is not living up to the challenge.
Serviceable bar food. We saw that there was a new bar here and decided to drop in for dinner on a Sunday night. Service was good and the food was alright, but nothing to write home about.
We both got "Pullman Burgers" which is their signature burger. A good bar-burger, but I wasn't wowed or anything. My burger was a little underdone (I ordered medium) but not outside one standard deviation. i think part of the problem is their "pretzel buns". It just sort of dominated the burger and I felt like I had a mouthful of pretzel the whole time. However, my girlfriend said she liked it.
The big story here are the "New LIne" fries. Regular fries in garlic and asiago cheese. If you come here you should definitely get them. All in all if I lived closer I could see hanging out here for the occasional beer and bar food, but it's a little far from me for that.
Brand new bar in the West Loop, just opened this week I believe. I stopped in for a beer since it was new. It's right under the Clinton Green Line stop.
It was really clean inside, the people were friendly, and the menu looked great. I'm excited about this new place since it's only 2 blocks from my place.
I'll be back often for dinner and to watch some games.
Went with some friends for some end of the week drinks and really enjoyed myself. I really like the space and the staff is really friendly. I've tried the sliders and Cabrales steak. I really enjoyed both of them and my steak was cooked perfectly!
It's definitely worth a trip and I look forward to heading back.
I live around here and was eagerly awaiting this place's opening - it didn't disappoint.
I've had the pullman burger and tavern wings - both were great. The pullman burger is well seasoned and tastes amazing. The regular burger is good too from what I hear.
The wings were great too. They have tavern and regular hot wings. The tavern wings have a great flavor - I cannot remember what exactly they taste like but they are BBQish yet not.
either way, the place didnt disappoint and the beer selection seemed pretty solid too.
Ate lunch here with friends. Had the signature burger (extra $1) and fries (extra $1). Food was average. Burger was small and non-descript. Fries were too garlicky and soggy. My tab was about $12.00 w/out a drink. Atmosphere was generic. Service was nice but I would not eat here again.
I work close to New Line and have been there a couple times for post work drinks and once for dinner. Jury's still out on this place. I can't tell if I like it more than Jefferson's (close by on Jefferson St.) or not. First, it's pretty tight in the bar area and there aren't too many tables to sit down and eat.
Service could use some work. The one time I had dinner, it was extremely slow to get food (but I'll cut them some slack as they are new and probably just getting situated) and the waitress was a little ditzy. She served us tap beer that looked really cloudy, but insisted that it should "taste fine." It didn't.
They've got great microbrews on tap, like Alpha King. Food is above average. I'll be back, but can't give it a full endorsement.
I live in the neighborhood and wanted to like this place a lot. I really wanted to. However, I am lukewarm on it.
I tried a take out of the Pullman Burger and the Cobb Salad. The Pullman Burger was not bad, but the fries (New Line Fries - the ones with the cheese) were a bit greasy and not so cheesy. I guess I was hoping for something like the cheese fries from a place like Gold Coast Dogs. The Salad just did not agree with me. The base greens didn't seem as fresh to me as I would like and I suppose a crisper iceburg lettuce would have been more welcome than the Romaine they served. The dressing was nothing special. I really think they need to work on the Cobb Salad.
Also tried the Hummus and the quesadilla with chicken. The Hummus was ok but I wish the pita bread was fresher - then again it is hard to work with Pita bread if you are not making it on the premises, so no knocks on them for that. The quesadillas were the best thing I got and I would rate them very good.
It's a tavern and those who are expecting a restaurant should be aware that it is primarily a tavern. The service was fine and they seemed to be taking care of their customers. Now I realize that a carryout customer is not going to be entertained or treated as well as someone who is eating or drinking on the premises. But since they were just opening up, I would have liked a friendlier welcome -- especially since I live in the neighborhood and, as I said before, really wanted to like this place.
I would say the jury is still out. I feel that they really have step up the taste in their food. (I wanted to order the special but was told the specials don't start until later.) Since I don't drink, I won't evaluate the liquor, but usually that is the same everywhere you go, except for the mixed drinks. Over time, I will try them again.
I really want to like this place.
Nice addition to the neighborhood. Went there for drinks after work with some co-workers and was pleasantly suprised. We had a large group but the staff quickly put together several tables in order to acccomodate us. Good bar food. This is literally a block away from the train station so i'm sure it will be very busy once word gets out.
