Had a huge a** lunch here a few weeks ago. Not enough room on the table for all the dishes, but it was delicious.
The catfish curry was a favorite of the table. I always recommend getting Tom Yum soup, it is my favorite. We got the standard pad thai which was of course good.
God, I can't even remember everything we got. I know there wasn't a single complaint about the food. The service was also great. They were continually stopping by to see if there were any empty plates to remove.
I want to do it again!
It has a romantic feel to it, with low lightly, traditional Thai decor it's a great spot to slip into for dinner regardless of company.
Our waiter(s) were generally friendly and attentive, though the service was a tad slow in spots. But they were good overall.
We tried the catfish/basil dish - not a lot of portion, but spicy and an interesting new flavor. I ordered the red duck curry. Yum! Spicy, loved the pineapple, sweet, flavorful duck and really yummy to the last bite. The Pad Thai though standard was just right as well.
I prefer the original Krung Thai place for the food but this one for the ambiance.
I decided to try this out for the first time with my best friend, who also likes Thai food. I wasn't even all that hungry to begin with... He had called me about an hour before and said that we were eating, so I just went along with it haha...
Anyways, another friend of mine recommended this place to me. There aren't many Thai places in the part of SJ that I live in, so I felt it was best to ask her because she LOVES thai food. We missed it when driving, so we had to U-turn. I was a little hesitant since it looked like such a small place... but it was actually roomy enough, and looked really nice! Nicely lit and designed... Anybody that would look may have thought I was on a date lol... But hey, he's a bf as in best friend =)
He ordered a pork panang curry with a serving of rice, and I ordered the pad see-ew with veggies. The first thing I noticed when we got our items was that the dishes ran on the small side, which made it kind of pricey for what you got.
Though the pad see-ew was decent, I was quite disappointed. I think it could have used a little more flavor, and for being a vegetarian version, I expected maybe some tofu... or something, but there was nothing in there other than the chinese broccoli and egg (which is what the dish already had!). I give them brownie points for my best friend's curry, though. He enjoyed it a lot. The pork was a good texture.
The decor is great, food decent, service... good enough. It's weird when the servers walk by and watch you, but don't ask you how the meal is or anything...
My fiance set up a bday dinner for me at New Krung Thai. The service was excellent. We had a group of 11 in which we were promptly seated. We had 2 more join the dinner at the very last second and they were very accommodating on a Saturday night which is their peak time.
The food turned out ok. Very few folks of the party had leftovers so that to me means they ate it all. The portions are generous and I would recommend this place as a great option for Thai food.
It is also located very close to valley fair if that is of interest to you. The parking lot is small and it is one way in, one way out. There is plenty of parking. The atmosphere is good, but should be used more for friends vs. dates as it is very loud.
I've been going to Krung Thai for over 4 years now. I absolutely love this place! Yesterday I returned to eat with my mother and was delightfully surprised to find out they had renovated parts of the restaurant, the lighting and decor they've added has made the restaurant a bit more posh.
After checking out a bunch of different Thai restaurants in Dublin, I've come to the conclusion that nothing beats Krung Thai. It's definitely worth the 40 minute drive down.
Make sure to order their pad thai and their green curry. You won't be disappointed. Their meat is never dry and their sauces are always amazingly sweet, with a slight spicy tang.
My only qualm is that I've noticed they've downsized their pad thai. =/ Even that doesn't stop me from returning here. Give it a try, you won't regret it.
Every time my wife and I go to this Krung Thai location, we are treated like family. Because we get such great service, we always invite new friends and family to go with us knowing they'll get the same hospitality we always receive. Krung Thai serves delicious and savory Thai dishes. We always enjoy their appetizers, marinated meats, soups, noodles, curries, vegetables, and desserts. Krung Thai is definitely a great Thai restaurant for both group and intimate settings.
This evening, we had a party of 5, and called 30 minutes ahead of time to make reservations while driving on the freeway. We arrived at 6:45pm and were promptly seated. At 7pm, the place was 75% full even on a Friday evening. Right when 7:15pm hit, I can see that the place was packed and gobs of people were waiting in the front lobby.
A few good hints before you arrive:
1) Call ahead and make reservations, or
2) Get to Krung Thai by 7pm at the latest to be seated with minimal waiting
3) If you cannot find parking inside their lot of don't even want to try, there are 3 curbside spaces right at the entrance along the Winchester Blvd walkway.
My wife ordered several dishes with our party of 5, 3 guys and 2 ladies. She ordered in her Thai native language with our waitress, P' Kai, and made sure that everything was without onions.
1) Angel Wings
2) Som Tum w/salty crab
3) Neua Nam Tok
4) Pad See-Ew
5) Pad Phak Pa-Som
6) Gaeng Ga-Ree
7) Pad Prik, Pork
8) White Rice
9) Our 3 guests had Thai Ice Tea
10) 2 orders of Sticky Rice
11) 2 orders of Fried Banana and ice cream (dessert)
Everything was cooked very well, not burnt, but cooked to perfection. One person in our group was a temporary vegetarian. She told us she would cheat for dinner and afterwards she told us she was glad she did. All their ingredients were fresh, dishes were flavorful, and always makes me salivate for another bite. The total bill came close to $110, but was well worth it given the amount of dishes along with their generous customer service and attentiveness, fast friendly service, food prepared immediately and brought to our table still steaming, and cleanliness.
There's only 2 Thai restaurants I would go to have a complete meal in the bay area. One is here at Krung Thai and the other is in San Francisco. But for now, Krung Thai satisfies my hunger for Thai food in the south bay. We've been coming here for the past 8 years and I don't foresee stopping to go anytime soon. Overall, definitely two forks up!
Best Thai restaurant in San Jose. Papaya Salad is one of my favorites. Parking lot is small and noisy acoustics are the only two negatives.
Good food, consistently terrible service. Don't want to bother writing much more, just want to register the 1 star.
This is my favorite Thai restaurant in the bay area! This is always the place I recommend when someone asks about good Thai food.
I have tried many stuff on the menu, and yet I have not been disappointed. Everything was made with great flavors, The menu has great amount of selections.
Here are among my favorites:
1.) Satay = great appetizer
2.) Curries = I agree with Samantha R. The green curry is my favorite, and the yellow curry gets my 2nd place.
3.) Eggplants = I am a big fan of egg plants of this place, alll the entrees with egg plants are veriiiiiiiiiiii good!
4.) Dessert.... I haven't try them yet, but I want to give the fried ice cream a try!
The staff and the services are friendly, the average wait line/time could be long, but they take phone reservations if you have more than like.. 4 people (I think?). So be prepared to wait in the line........... but for some 5 stars yummy food!!
I use to love Krung Thai...but i think the food and service and has gone way down, down, down! Makes me wanna cry!
I had lunch here last week with some girlfriends and came back to work with a major tummy ache that literally lasted all day! I had ordered the chicken Pad graw-paw (basil and garlic). And then the dish was filled mostly with shredded bamboo shoots instead of chicken! I think i had 2 good chunks of chicken in there. Disappointing because I paid $7.95 for shredded bamboo shoots!
It also took forever for the food to come out. I know it was peak lunch hours but they should have hired more workers if they know lunch would be packed everyday! Anyhow, i don't think i will be coming back here for awhile. Oh...and parking sucks!
LUFF it!! Everytime I've gone, food is always great. Sometimes the waiters/waitresses are slow or unhappy lol....but love the food.
Pad Thai is a must
Panang Chicken-yum
spring rolls-yum
of course the FBI-YUM!
Spicy Seafood Soup - yum!
too much to list....so far everything has been good to me :)
They serve beer too, that's always a plus :)
Overall the food is very tasty. The pineapple fried rice is one of my favorites. You won't go wrong with any of their curries either. The downfall to most asian restaurants is that they do not wash and prep their seafood well. I ordered the thai basil steamed mussles last night and bit into some nasty barnacle thing that was stuck to the mussle meat. It made me lose my apetite.
Not to mention their cocktails are weak, made completely of sugar water. I don't know who's bad it is... theirs, for making such horrible drinks... or mine, for ordering it.
There were only about 3 tables, yet they didn't refill our water. We called for them when they were heading back to the kitchen, but they ignored us. Oh well.
I ordered the Panang Fish on the lunch special menu. It came with tom kha gai soup, which was pretty good. They also gave me two mini eggrolls and like 3 fried wontons as a part of the lunch special. The portions were great for 7.95. Good amount of fish. My medium curry wasn't spicy at all, so if you want spicy, order hot.
My fellow diner ordered the spicy Thai fried rice and he liked the texture of the chicken. I tried it, and I liked it! The crispy basil leaves topped off the fried rice very well...mmmm.
I would go back and try the pad thai or pineapple fried rice.
When I want thai food, there is only really 2 places I like to go... and one of them is Krung Thai, (either location works for me). I find that most Thai places I go to are lacking in flavor, which is not a problem at Krung Thai. No matter how many times I come here I always over order because I love everything.
I always start with the Tom Yum Goong and the Fried Tofu. My favorite entree choices here would be: Yellow Curry with chicken, Pad Thai (obviously), Pad See-Ew with beef, Kwoey Tiew Rad Na... (as you can see, I like noodles), Kao Pad-Gra-Praw, and then of course dessert. You can't lose with the sweet sticky rice with mango and the fried banana with ice cream.
Great for take-out. You must order their angel wings appetizer! It's stuffed chicken wings fried to heavenly perfection.
Try to stay away during the wknd lunch or dinner crunch or you'll be in a traffic jam of people.
they get really busy here. we came here at 8:45 on a thursday night and the restaurant was completely packed! as was the parking lot, prompting us to park next door in front of the (closed) burger barn at our own risk, according to the signs (but everyone else was doing it... btw burger barn sounds strangely enticing, no? plus it's just fun to say. burger barn burger barn burger barn).
we ordered the spicy beef salad (the second one with dried chili vs. fresh), pad thai, green curry with tofu and eggplant, and panang curry with fish. plus steamed rice on the side. everything was delicious but i especially loved their rendition of pad thai. the noodles seemed slightly thinner here than elsewhere but still retained their chewy bite. the sauce was on the sweet side but that's easily counteracted with a squeeze of lime. nom nom!
I've been coming to this place for many years now. This is the first place I tried Thai food and since then have been to many cities to try other thai places and still feel like this is the best Thai restaurant! They have the best curries (Catfish Red Curry and Yellow Curry). There is so much flavor that the leftovers still taste really good the next day! I love their Spicy Fried Rice and Garlic and Basil dishes. The thai iced tea is always delicious and dessert is just as good. I also ordered the Pad Thai very often and it's really good no matter if you like tofu, chicken, pork, shrimp, or beef.
This restaurant deserves 5 stars for the quality and taste of the food, but not for the service when dining in. They are not very attentive to the tables and have forgotten one of our dishes before. We reminded them halfway through the meal when we realized that it never came out and it seems like they completely forgot about it and by the time it was done, we were done eating too. Although our dine-in experiences aren't great, the FOOD is consistently over the top scrumptious and very satisfying.
Food is excellent and beautifully prepared. Restaurant is very clean and has a nice atmosphere. I usually order the pineapple fried rice - it is really tasty (has shrimp, chicken, veggies, pineapple, raisins, cashews), yum! Pad Thai and Panang Curry are also good choices. My friends like to get the mushroom soup and they love it (I stay away because I hate mushrooms). Thai iced tea and coffee are both great. Service is pretty quick and usually there isn't a wait unless it's peak time on a Friday or Saturday night. Not too expensive. Definitely one of the best Thai places in San Jose.
Ok, let me just say that I used to LOVE this place but the last few times I have been here the service totally STINKS!!! Holy cow, seriously, its one thing to accidentally walk pass our table once but 4 times???!!! Really? Did we not look hungry? Heck, we totally set the menus in a stack at the edge of the table to indicate that we were done looking at it and was ready to order. Now if it was crowded, I could understand but it was 3pm on a Sunday afternoon, seriously dude, wth?
Anyways, when we finally got to order we asked if we could get the chicken for the pad thai on the side as one of us was a vegetarian, the answer was "No, we don't do that". Are you kidding me? Most place are quite accommodating and would be like "sure", but apparently not here!
We ordered the Jungle Curry, the Drunken Noodles and the vegetarian pad thai. Let me start off by saying that the Jungle Curry is my favorite dish and it of course never fails and this time was no exception. Its a little on the spicy side so its not for the faint of heart.
The pad thai was strangely sweet so I did not like it very much. Heck the vegetarian pad thai at the Vegetarian house is WAAAAYYYYYYY better!
I didn't have any of the drunken noodles as I was busy occupying myself with the Jungle Curry but my friend said it was really good.
So I guess 1 star for the cleanliness (as the restaurant was really clean) and 1 star for the food (it was good but nothing to write home about) and 1 star for well, I guess being open on a Sunday. 2 stars taken off for the CRAPPY service!!!!
I've had really good experiences and some pretty good experiences. A word of warning is that if you order hot, it will be pretty hot.
I've had lots of great stuff including:
Papaya Salad
Pineapple Fried Rice
Masaman Curry
Sticky Rice Desserts
I didn't really like the Silver Noodles or the Crab Fried Rice though.
New Krung tries to bring everything thai in their restaurant. the food, the servers, and the ambiance.
The place is really nice, but a bit too dimly lit. It also seems really cluttered with all these thai decorations. But oh well. The food makes up for it.
Ahhh this thai place is good. I like almost anything my parents order (i'm not one who goes to thai restaurants by myself, so i'm usually with my parents when I do go to them). I'm kinda craving for it right now. But boo, I'm too far away. But yes. great food to have here so i'm not complaining. I guess the whole "you eat more when the light in a restaurant is dimmer" is true because i ended up eating quite a lot of Pad thais and Pad see ews(?). Over all great!
The food is great. The service sucks. We had 4 adults eating at our table. Nearing the end of the meal, the servers couldn't wait to get us out of there. They kept asking if they could take away our half full plate of pad thai, etc. They kept asking if we wanted our food to go. No we don't want it to go, we're still eating people!!!!
To top it off, they tack on a mandatory 15% gratuity!! Mandatory 15% gratuity for a party of 4? We didn't pay it, we left like 12%.
My coworkers and I wanted to try something new since we always eat at a Chinese or Korean restaurant every time we celebrated someone's birthday. But this time, we figured; let's try some Thai food, shall we?
We easily found a parking spot since we got there before the crazy lunch hour. I opened the door and some asshole guy went in before me. It turns out it was one of the waiters. Chivalry = dead. When we walked in, we were immediately seated to our reserved table. He pointed where we were going to sit. That waiter was not very welcoming at all. We sat down and my coworker said that she had to order food because the waiter was giving her an attitude while she was waiting for us. I thought to myself "goodness gracious." Apparently when the waiter asked her how many people were in her group, she mentioned 7-8. Then the waiter asked "well, what is it? Make your mind 7 or 8?!" Oh boy, it's gonna be a fun lunch.
The waiter gave us glasses of water with lemons in it (god knows where the lemons have been and the bacterias it contains) and left. Wait, what? Don't you ask your customers if they wanted anything else to drink? I guess they don't. I had to wave to the waiter to tell him that we wanted to get some drinks. How rude. Our appetizers came: 4 tiny sticks of chicken and 4 tiny sticks of beef satays with peanut sauce and a small bowl of cucumber salad. The lady that put the food on the table didn't even try to make room for the appetizers. She just slammed that shit on the table. Wtf? Even their ugly, wilted rose center table decoration fell on my co-worker's drink and she didn't replace it. Anyway, we ate the appetizers and they were delicious; meat was thinly sliced, tender, very nice marinade, which goes well with the peanut sauce and cucumber salad. The peanut sauce reminds me of peanut butter. I've had better Thai peanut sauce which did not taste or look like peanut butter.
Main course: two orders of shrimp with garlic and pepper (mild), two orders of chicken with sweet basil and red bell peppers, two pad thai with shrimp, egg, and chicken, and one container of small rice. The food was yummy. Thai foods are always sweet, spicy, and sometimes sour so I wasn't expecting anything new. So anyhoo (not a real word), the whole time we were eating, they didn't ask how we were doing, they took forever to take our empty plates, which took most of the room in our table, and they failed to give us a bigger plate! Oh yeah, I noticed that the waiters were nice to white people. Are they discriminating against Asian people now? They're brown skin too, you know. Lame-o. Well, they heard something from the birthday girl. The manager wouldn't talk to her so all these male waiters were yelling at my coworker, arguing to her and trying to defend their abominable service. One of the waiters tries to excuse his behavior because he was tending other tables. But then when another customer was trying to get his attention, he said "Just wait a minute!" That was fucking rude. Although the food was good, service was pretty freakin' horrible (their fugly faces matched their fugly personalities), and this place is loud! What is it an open market? It looks like the Original Krung Thai and New Krung Thai both have horrible customer service according to fellow yelpers. What's wrong with them?
We were all too irritated with their service that we skipped dessert.
1 star for delicious food.
negative 4 stars for pissing me off.
Note: I will not be returning here, ever again.
Whay is there so many damn people all the time? O yeah, food = good.
They should have just rename this as 'the Ex-Wife's Krung Thai."
the Crab Noodle thing is good, thai ice tea...mmm.
Penang fish curry, pad Thai.
The Papaya salad was interesting.
Still not spicy enough though.
The quality of food was better than the old "ex-husband's" Krung thai.
I"m guessing this place doesn't need a 452nd review, but here goes. It's a great place for lunch, or, since it sits in the shadow of a ginormous mall, for a post-shopping stop -- though Krung is okay for dinner also.
Love their green papaya salad and noodle dishes. The service is efficient, not great. Atmosphere is nice.
New Krung Thai. How about a smile once in a while?
The service: Workers are so straight forward. Demanding. There seems to be a upsetting vibe in the kitchen or something because the workers never smile. When I ask for more rice, they walk away with my bowl like zombies and place it down as if they're waiting for the hours of time to end all together.
The food: MHMM GOOD! This is what I fcking call Thai Food.
Must have-- Mango and sticky rice for dessert. These may be the tastiest mangoes you'll ever have!
The place is a refreshing restaurant with blasting ac. Great summer dinner spot.
Amazing I haven't reviewed this place yet. I've been going here for quite a while for thai good. This is always the place I point to when someone asks for good thai food, can't go wrong here.... maybe the service.
The staff can seem a little moody at times and it seems like they hide after they give the menu and after they serve your food. Takes me forever to get their attention for something.
I enjoy their spicy beef salad, very spicy and very yummy.
Their pad thai is how it should taste like.
Pineapple fried rice as all the goodies and tastes perfect.
Panang curry is very good, especially when its spicy.
Tofu and eggplant in green curry was very good. Chucks of eggplants was the best part. Tofu is fried.
Lunch is a great deal, for about $8, you can choose from their lunch menu, from curry to entrees, comes with rice, soup, 2 mini veggie egg rolls and friend won tons.
Dinner- during busy hours, prepare to wait... for a seat... and service!
Consistently yummy and friendly staff.
My favorite Thai food place! Nowhere else has even come close to making food this good! I usually take family, friends, relatives, and colleagues from out of town here! I would even tell strangers to come here if I hear them inquiring about Thai food! That's how much I love this place. The only other place I've had bomb ass yellow curry was at home, made by my auntie. Otherwise, this place has the best yellow curry ever!! Their green curry isn't bad either! For lunch, I always either order their yellow curry, eggplant with green curry, or the eggplant with beef (L22). When we eat with a larger group where we order a bunch of stuff and just share, I'd always get the pad thai, yellow curry, and the tom yum soup (the one with coconut is good too (tom kha ta lay). Everyone else gets to pick the rest. I must have those three!! Service is always good. They're so cute, they try really hard to make it fun, comfortable, and inviting atmosphere. Their whole staff dressed up for Halloween! I thought that was really cool! They also have fresh flowers everyday! Can't love this place enough!
Their mango and sticky rice dessert is superb. Just thinking about it is making me salivate...it sucks that they don't have it all the time!!! It's seasonal only!! Boohoo! Also, they close at 2pm and reopen at 5pm, so plan ahead!!! Don't bum yourself like I did before!!
The food here is absolutely delicious. I have been coming here on average of about once every two months. All the dishes have huge amounts of flavor and some of them are really heavy on garlic, which I love. I am a fan of spicy food, so some of the noodle/rice dishes are awesome. All this good food definitely couples nicely with the thai beer they have. The only complaint I have is the noise level. At peak times, the noise levels are insane and its tough to carry a conversation at your table sometimes. My friends and I discussed it and we think it might possibly be the shape of the room. This is not their fault, so I still rate the restaurant on a whole a 5.
I'm not from this part of the world so I'm not sure how it should be cooked. That said I love this place. The Pad Thai, Satay and the various curries are all rockin. The prices are good and the quality is great. Everyone I've ever brought here loves this place. I have my friends to thank for bringing me here years ago and getting me hooked. There are several other Thai places in town but I keep coming back here because, to me, it just has the best flavor. I like it really spicy and they're not afraid to add on the heat. Overall the service is good, but there have been times when I've had to wait for my order to be taken, or for drinks to arrive, or even to have the bill brought over, but based on food alone, run do not walk to their door.
Krung Thai is still one of my favorite thai restaurants. I never get sick of this place! I've been here so many times with my family, my boyfriend, and friends. When I'm craving for thai food, Krung Thai is the first place that comes to my mind! I love their pad thai, papaya salad, yellow curry with chicken, tom yum soup, and of course their fried bananas with coconut ice cream! What a delight! Wonderful meal, which makes me an extremely happy girl!
I am from Thailand (Siam). Food is less than average and usually Thai service is great.... for some reason New Krung Thai and the old Krung Thai across 280 think they can provide poor service....
Drive a few more miles to House of Siam on 2nd street in San Jose and order the sticky rice. House of Siam will at least smile at you when you walk in.
The only reason why this place got 2 stars instead of 1 is because I can get beef noodle soup (guoit thieu neiu) here.... the Thai version of Pho
Yum! Came here on a very high recommendation from my favorite Thai family and was not disappointed.
We came around 6 on a Sunday (4 people) and the place was already quite packed. Waited a couple of minutes but were seated and served very promptly.
Satay chicken = bomb. Moist, tender meat on skewers, and there were 4, the perfect amount!
Som Tum (papaya salad) = delicious. We got ours medium spicy and it was perfection.
The beef chili salad was also tasty. It was warm, which was pleasantly surprising. Each bite is like an explosion of flavor in your mouth. Happy tastebuds!
My brother got the Beef Noodle Soup and he really liked it. It kind of resembles pho but the soup base is darker. Anyways it gets a thumbs up.
The Crispy Garlic Prawns were weird to me. I liked the taste, but it arrived looking like a pile of broken fried batter pieces with shrimp buried within. Also they were so difficult to eat! The shells weren't fried enough to devour without extra chewing, and removing them was messy and seemed wasteful. Would not recommend.
Also got a Eggplant and Tofu green curry. It was quite sweet but delightful. I love curry! A good amount of ingredients.
All in all, a very pleasant dining experience. Would definitely come back after a good day of shopping at Westfield! :)
Just a warning: The restaurant itself is not too sound-absorbant so it gets quite loud.. like a Chinese restaurant at dim sum time if you know what I mean.
Okay. ..so again it's about 7:30am and I'm at work yelping. . .and I'm already getting super hungry!!! Lunch is a couple hours away and I already know what I'm going to eat for lunch - Krung Thai's Pad See-Ew. . .NOM!!!!!! :P
So if you read my reviews, I always say that I love noodles. . .and I really do! My mom told me that when she was pregnant with me, she ate a LOT of noodles. .maybe that's why I love it so much? hehe. .anyway, this place definitely has THE BEST Pad See-Ew and Pad Thai. I love how their Pad See-Ew has chicken AND beef and a generous amount of veggies (veggies that I actually like to eat. . hehe) I could eat this everyday and would never get sick of it!
Okay so besides their noodles dishes, they do have SOO MANY other dishes that are almost as good as their noodle dishes. . .Their KAO PAD SAPPAROD (pineapple fried rice) is yummy (who would have thought pineapple in fried rice? nom nom). I also like to order a couple of appetizers when I'm with friends: Angel Wings, Thai egg rolls and the Thai bbq chicken.
I'm not a fan of curry just because I'm not into it (only japanese curry please). . but my friends rave about how great their curry is. Oh, and I also don't like coconut so that's another reason why I don't eat their curry. . .but give it a try! (supposedly their green curry is the best)
gaaah....when will it be noontime?!!?!? I'm FAMISHED!
I was just told that they only take reservations for a party of 6 or more.
That's fine, but the rudeness of the lady on the phone was just too much.
She made it sound like she is doing me a favor if I come to dine at their establishment.
She also told me that the hostess would "kick me out of the restaurant if I came up to her with a reservation of 5 people"
-----
We really wanted Thai food, and we have had excellent meals here before, so we decided to forget about the awful phone experience and make our way to New KrungThai anyway.
The food:
Appetizers:
Fried Tofu - 15 or so triangles of deep fried goodness.
The sauce it comes with reminded me of Mrs. Butterworth's maple syrup tho.
Chicken Satay - guaranteed winner. Just so good. I could eat like 20 of these if I had a Benjamin to burn.
Spring Rolls - Did I just order these....why oh why?? skip these.
Som Tum (Papaya Salad) - this is my #1 favorite Thai dish of all-time.
We ordered it "very spicy" and it did not disappoint.
My Dad looked like he just came back from the sauna after a few bites but he had the spicy food afterglow too...hahahahha
Main courses:
Panang Fish curry - deep fried fish in a creamy sweet red sauce.
Thumbs Up.
Yellow curry (chicken) - classic Thai curry executed nicely. The coconut milks add great flavor and I really wish I knew the exact ingredients of the curry paste used for this great dish.
Prawns w/Basil - pretty good but the portion could have been a bit bigger, nonetheless the sauce that bathed this sea creatures was so delicious, I could lick up the leftover garlickly juices off the oval plate without hesitation.
Pad Thai - Wheres the meat? The promised combo of chicken, shrimp and tofu was minuscule compared to the huge pile of cellophane noodles. I have to admit it's a tasty tasty dish though.
The service was slow at the beginning and got better near the end.
It's pretty hilarious that the servers think that just because we are Indian we want everything Volcanic Spicy....some of us don't.
Probably better to ask then to assume.
i have been coming to this place for a long time, and it has been consistenly pleasing to my tummy. (the original krung thai on winchester is just as good too.) here are some of my all-time favorites:
- chicken satay
- tao hoo tod (fried tofu appetizer)
- tom kha gai (chicken coconut soup)
- pad thai (duh!)
- pad see-ew (dark brown rice noodles. nothing ew about it!)
- pad khee mao (drunken noodles)
- gaeng ga-ree (yellow curry. i like it w chicken)
- gaeng kiew waan (green curry. i like this w chicken too)
- pineapple fried rice
- mango sticky rice
ok, so basically it's the entire menu, but the point is this place rocks! fyi for all you sweet tooth people, the mango sticky rice is only served from around late spring to the end of summer (when mangoes are in season). i have to wait all winter to eat it again next summer, and i feel like a heroin addict who's supplier has left town. i've even asked them if they'd make it for me if i brought in a frozen mango, to which they declined my request hahaaahaha. o well, the fried banana is always in season, and it's pretty good too.
I came here for dinner with an ex last week, late on a Sunday night, and the place was packed! After waiting for about 15 minutes, we were seated at the very last table available. Our waiter explained that we should place our order as soon as possible due to the number of other tables and the fact that the kitchen was closing in about an hour, at 10.
After perusing the menu, which was several pages long, and filled with delicious-sounding items, we decideded on the beef mussamun curry and pad thai, with steamed rice. Even though we'd been warned that it would take a long time to get our food, we were served less than 10 minutes later. I'm not sure if the waiter didn't hear our request for mild curry, but it was spicy! Hot but flavorful. And the pad thai was quite easily the best I've had. Instead of having all of the ingredients tossed together, like at some other Thai places, the beansprouts, peanuts, and other garnishes were served on the side, so I could mix it to my liking.
The company was good and so was the food, so much so that when I was in the area less than a week later, I decided to get some food to go. I was still craving the pad thai, so I got an order of that, plus some yellow curry chicken. Again, the restaurant was packed, and the guy who took my order told me it would be ready in about 20 minutes. I settled in for a long wait, but they brought my food to me about 7 minutes later.
The food was fantastic, and the portions were large enough for me to have a lot of leftovers for lunch and even dinner the next day. Even though my total was around $25, including an order of rice, I felt that the amount and quality of food justified the price. I know I've spent just as much at other Thai places and been given portions that were half the size.
It's nice to know there's a great alternative to the restaurants in Santana Row and Valley Fair in that neighborhood. Thanks, D.!
Okay - so the service sucks. They're always busy, and they serve you like you are at a fast food restaurant (at least they're quick). They are trying to get their money's worth, so the faster you eat, the sooner you'll leave.
I don't care -
This is still (in my opinion) the best Thai restaurant in the bay area (and I LOOOVE Thai food!). Everything I've had here has been nothing less than delicious. I can eat anything off the menu and they won't disappoint me! Even fish - and I hate fish.
So come here for Thai food - not for the service or ambiance for that matter. 5 stars because the food is that good!
I wonder whAt The " krung" in new krung
means...any thai yelpers feel free to fill me in, but my best guess is that it's an acronym
