Review from Dru M.
In the mood for Korean BBQ...the bf and I found ourselves dining here. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very warm and comfortable and the service was spot on (friendly, very attentive). This is a fabulous place for a date night or dinner with a group of friends.
What we ordered...
*We went the Barbeque route (grill at the table) - we decided on the Bul Go Gi (thin slices of sirloin in our house soy marinade) and Busut Gui (mushrooms seasoned in a soy marinade). Both were seasoned well and the portions were pretty large, especially the mushrooms. Both also came with sliced white onions to grill.
*BBQ was served with soup, rice and sides (kimchi, soy beans, bean paste, pickled radish & carrots)
*Sang Sun Jun cod fillets dipped in egg batter and fried sewed with a say dipping sauce.
*Sake - hot and delicious.
Prices (especially for the group meals) can be on the higher end, but I promise you will leave very satisfied. The Rice, Bibimbop and Soup bowls are very reasonable though.
Bonus - as soon as you sit down and start checking over the menu...complimentary hot tea is brought to the table. Nice.
Overall...tasty, fresh Korean BBQ with fabulous service...what else could you ask for? Give them a try soon!Listed in: Wonderous Western…

It's been a while since I've reviewed a business on Yelp, but I had another great experience at New Korea House recently that inspired me to review again. New Korea House is my favorite Korean restaurant in SF. I first went to NKH a few years ago based on a friend's recommendation and have returned often because of the clean atmosphere, great food, and even better service. It's the perfect place to catch up with friends, while enjoying delicious, well-prepared food. Regardless if I am with my Korean or non-Korean speaking friends, the wait staff consistently treats us with friendly, prompt, and attentive service (unlike some of the other not-so-friendly, and dingy Korean places in the Richmond). Several times the the owner (a really nice Korean lady) has come out to give us a free dish, simply as a courtesy. Talk about "service"!
I recommend the spicy pork and naegmyun. The kalbi is always really great too (make sure you cook the bones too so you can give them to your dog :)). They use very good quality meat and the marinade / flavor is highly addictive! I've lived in both NY and LA, and NKH certainly rivals the best BBQ places in those respective KTowns. One added benefit: parking is very convenient. It's located right across the the street from Japantown. You can watch a movie at Kabuki or get ice cream afterward... although just a warning: you might not have room for that ice cream after a delicious and filling meal from NKH. -

I go to the New Korea House about once a week with my wife. We really enjoy the service and the atmosphere. It feels like we're eating at home; the staff are very friendly and the owners who work there almost every day, come out to see us. It feels like they're my family!
They make their own ingredients like kimchee, soy, tofu, and other side dishes so it's very authentic and tasty.
Our favorite dishes are:
Soup:
Daro Gook (arguably one of the best soups you can order - the president of Korea orders this when he comes to San Francisco - the New Korea House is the restaurant he goes to); Kalbi Tang (this soup is awesome, has very tender beef and is very good to eat after you have a hangover); Soon Tobu Stew (spicy tofu soup; ask for the one with beef instead of seafood); Yuk Hae Jang (spicy beef soup; great soup but only for those who like spicy food)
Kalbi - usually order this cooked in the kitchen so we don't smell like bbq afterwards, but if you do decide to cook this in front of you, make sure you cook the kimchi on the grill with the beef
Dol Sot Bibim Bap - mixed rice and veggies and meat in a hot stone pot
Pajun - seafood pancake - ask them to cook it a little crispier / well done; tastes much better that way
SaenSun Jim - steamed fish with a sweet soy sauce glaze. C'est manifique
We went again recently because there was an awesome write-up in the SFGate about their chicken soup (sam gae tang) - it's a cornish hen with sticky rice and ginseng with green onions; very healthy and refreshing but takes a little time to prepeare - i think it's the only Korean restaurant i think that services this in the bay area.
They have awesome take out as well, so if you're not in the mood for sitting down, make sure you order take out - they always pack a bunch of extra panchan (kimchee and other side dishes) so it's cheaper than going to the Korean market.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Overprice !! most expensive than any other korean restaurant around.
This place is tricky ! They put cheaper price on menu outside on their window and when you came in, the price is double. They told me outside menu is for Lunch only. Then why I did not see "Lunch" on the menu outside ?
Inside Price: kalbi $29, Bulgogi $22. Even lettuce is $7 !!! I thought lettuce is Free ??
Taste just ok but not worth the price. Go Tofu House or Brother or Han Il Kwan they give you free tofo soup and unlimited Lettuce. -

Whenever I'm back in SF, I always go to New Korea House. It's by far the best Korean food in San Francisco. I used to come here often with friends and coworkers because of the great food and excellent service. The food is always fresh and reminds me of my mother's cooking. If you're ever in the mood for Korean or need a good recommendation, you can't go wrong here. Their jiggaes and BBQ are the best!

Over priced Korean food. The galbi was ok, but the portions were so small, almost like an appetizer.
Service was also horrible. Will never go back unless it's free. -

Whenever my coworkers at EA ask me what my favorite Korean restaurant is in SF I always say NEW Korea House hands down! I've been coming back here for years and it just gets better each time. New Korea House is exactly what a Korean restaurant in the city should be like - fast service, reasonably priced, cozy atmosphere and the food is just freaking yum. And furthermore, it's just a nice place to go get your grub on and unwind you know what I'm saying?
I personally really like the Dolsot Bibim Bap. It's sizzlin' hot. And the Kalbi Tang (soup) warms your soul in the winter. Mmmmm, I'm going to bring my coworkers here on another EA outing soon. And we're going to drink lots of Soju and show em how it's done, son. ^ ^ -

Great Korean BBQ in SF JapanTown. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was pretty cool. I love to cook my meat on the table, just be prepared to smell BBQ for hours after that =)

The staff here is very kind and attentive. We were able to get seated at 6PM on a Saturday with no problems. We ordered bulgogi, job chae, pork belly (forgot the Korean name), and kalbi. All the BBQ were good cuts of meat but not particularly flavorful. The side dishes were plentiful and tasty and the job chae earned an A+ in my book. My only complaint is that the water glasses are so tiny. I had to act much braver than I was with the kimchi since I had no cold beverage to wash it down.

3-3.5
DISCLAIMER: I am by no means a Korean food expert. Not even in the slightest.
Alright, with that out of the way, I was debating whether to give this place 3-3.5 stars or 3.5-4 stars because there were a few things I really liked, but the most important aspect was just okay.
We received soup with our orders, which was a delicious, extremely flavorful beef broth. There was also a great variety of side dishes, and I enjoyed all of them. However, the most important part of the meal, my main entree the clay pot bibambap was just average. I was expecting crispy rice at the bottom to mix up with the vegetables and meat, but it just never got crispy enough. The flavor of the overall dish wasn't as flavorful as other clay pot bibambap dishes that I've had. The best part of the dish was the meat, which was tender.
Service was decent.
I really wanted to give this place a better rating, so I will give it another chance later! -

Love!!!
Food is good for sure, but what I liked the most was the waitress who served my table :-)
She was very friendly and sweet.
Honestly, she was the sweetest Korean lady I've ever met.
Good service makes food taste better.

was looking for the old korea house when we realized it closed. so we gave this place a try.
overall pretty decent, very flavorful soups and stews. banchan selection was good (little dishes). service was also good.
seafood pancake was a little soggy, but tasted fine.
however, prices were a little high for my taste. i had korean food that was just as good in the sunset for less. -

Had a concert at the Fillmore, and thus had to eat Korean food before hand. It's a rule...don't question it. We branched out a little bit from the regular two right next door. I was glad we came to this place. It's a very solid Korean joint. Service was good, panchans were plenty. And I was really pleasantly surprised with how good their spicy tofu soup was. Their bi bim bop was also delicious. I'll definitely come back again - the next time I go to a concert at the Fillmore.

This review is for ginseng chicken soup.
We used to go to the old Korea House for ginseng chicken soup in cold winter days. So when we found it was no longer there and in New Korea House they also had ginseng chicken soup, we walked in with no doubt. The server told us we had to wait for 20 minutes for this ginseng chicken soup and we were OK for that.
About 10 minutes, the ginseng chicken soup came. First of all, the portion was for 1 person only. But at the old Korea House, it was a big pot could satisfy both me and my husband. The size of ginsengs at New Korea House was babies compare to the old Korea House ginseng. And the price at New Korea House was more than the old one. As for the taste, I couldn't taste any ginseng flavor from the New Korea House ginseng chicken soup. I could tell they cooked the chicken in a different pot, not with ginseng together. This made me miss the old Korea House. At old Korea House, they gave us more side dishes after we finished any one of the plates. Here at the New Korea House, what was gone was gone. I know it's the way every other restaurants do, I was just spoiled by the old Korea House. Made me miss the old one even more.
In summary, totally disappointed. Will not come back any more. -

So it probably isn't useful to have a vegetarian review a Korean BBQ place, but I'll give it a shot anyway. I liked that you could grill the meats to your own specification and dress/marinade it the way you like it - the do-it-yourself, quasi-Benihana vibe worked well for the large group I went with.
I got the veggie bibimbap, which didn't quite hit the spot, owing to the fact that the chilli/spicy sauce they provided seemed off in some way - couldn't quite put my finger on it.
Warning - it's definitely on the high end of moderate - more than $20/person. -

- Seafood pancake: it's kinda different from other restaurants. Ingredient is fresh and full. It is quote good!
- Grill chicken, beef, pork: Meat is fresh and properly marinated. Good!
- Tofu stew: The soup tastes ok, but too bad it is not hot enough! -

I definitely enjoyed getting quality Korean food without having to drive all the way to the Richmond. We both got the sizzling bi bim bap and were quite satisfied. The banchan was brought out almost immediately and was a decent selection of food. The bi bim bap itself was pretty tasty and not super expensive. Service was good, too. I would certainly come back here if I wanted Korean food.

When my friend and I wishes to have Korean BBQ, this is the place if choice. They serve hood marinated meat. There were times in the past they would even include a plate of giant mushroom for cooking when we ordered two meat items. I think know if they've been doing that recently.
I myself also love their corn hen with ginseng soup (sam gae tang). It's a special item I had during my one tour of Korea in 2006 at a restaurant near the presidential palace (and my group was told even the president eats it there). This dush brings back memories of that visit. -

Really good side dishes!! Huge variety as well (~10 dishes)
Owner is a sweetheart. She is so nice with refilling the side dishes and making sure you enjoy your meal.
Huge variety of korean food (BBQ, Tofu Soup, etc). I've only had their Tofu Soup, and no complaints at all!
Only downside is that it's more expensive than most Korean restaurants I've been to, but I've been spoiled by South Bay Ktown on El Camino.
A great korean restaurant to try in SF! -
Review from Julia D.
My parents and their out of town guests took me here last night. It was a nice enough place. I am not a fan of cooking my own food on a bbq at the table. For some people, this might be a load of fun, but for me, not so much. I don't really like meat or grilling, so that might explain it. I liked the small kimchee plates on the table, and this bowl of tofu and vegetables we got. I don't think I'd come back unless I was with people who love meat. There are lots of people like that. The meat itself was very good, but it just seemed laborious to cook meat for 6 people. We lounged there for almost 3 hours and they didn't mind, so that was really nice of them.

actually, the service is pretty good, the place is run of the mill, but the meats and the food is pretty good. the side dishes that comes with your order is adventurous at most. I enjoyed myself, and cooked on my table, its a different experience so i definitely recommend it.

One of my (many) rules has to do with Korean food.
I cook Korean food, and unless it's something that I don't know how to cook, or a restaurant can cook it better than I can - I simply do not go "out" for Korean food. In other words, money will change hands for me to eat mediocre Korean food that I cook better in my own kitchen.
Right next door to New Korea House is a cosmetic store. My friend and I had to get some stuff there, and given that we had planned lunch between the store and a showing of Karate Kid at Sundance, New Korea House was a convenient location for lunch.
I broke my rule and had lunch here.
I ordered the dolsot bibimbap off the lunch menu, and it was, as expected, mediocre. My friend ordered the soon tofu (spicy soup) and given that this dish is usually awful almost everywhere else, New Korea House's was acceptable.
The banchan was decent in taste but very few in quantity. Ding there, as one of the only perks to eating Korean food is having lots of banchan.
Service was friendly to us - but your mileage may vary; the waitress was an older Korean woman who seemed to treat us better than the service she showed others. She brought out some special seaweed for our table - that happened to be really good.
I've been to Korea House a few doors down for galbi bbq, and I recall it to be pretty good. I would not be surprised if the meat bbq at New Korea House was equivalent -- but how hard is it to make good meat?
For Korean dishes - I remain without a good place to eat in San Francisco. Still, the closest good Korean restaurant is in Oakland at Ohgane; for anything better you have to head to San Jose, or ideally, straight to Los Angeles. -

Having moved to the bay area from Los Angeles I sure was missing having access to some good korean food. Until now!!! I found this little treasure and since then it has been my go to place! I love how the quality of the meat is top notch! I usually order the Galbi , yukejang, galbi tang, and seafood pancake. Try it out and you won't be disappointed!

Review from Cath M.
GB was suppose to take me to this poshy, only 10 seats Japanese Sushi place. Then I tell him... "sweetie sorry, I don't do raw fish" - he looked so sad. He even wore shoes for me!
Thus, off we went... we trekked back down to the parking lot and saw a bunch of Korean res. He said to walk back and forth to figure out what I really want. Then I told him to Yelp which one was good... I know I was being lazy! He wanted to go back here because it was Zagat rated. I said sure, why not.
We came in and the place was semi-busy for a Thursday night. I told him that I hope we don't have to cook our food b/c I was starving. He said he could grill it... I said ok b/c I don't grill as well. He just gave me the look and asked what exactly do I do... I just smiled =)
We ordered the meal for two for $37+ and it came with a lot of stuff. They don't have a menu online but if you do go, it's the middle one. It came with kalbi and jap chae (gosh I hope I'm typing this all right...you'd think I'd know all these by heart!)
GB ordered soju (didn't catch the name) but it was smooth. I only had half a shot glass b/c I'm limiting my alcohol intake in preparation for my birthday =)
Anyway, GB asked if they could cook it instead of us. Wow, I didn't know that you could ask that but that was cool. Food started coming in slowly. The usual appetizers but they had more. I opted for the non spicy stuff of course. Then came the fried tofu and oysters omelet like, with the dumpling soup and then the kalbi and the noodles.
Overall, the food was tasty BUT the kalbi. I would need to take GB to SJ Omawari in San Jose for that.
Service was good and friendly and FAST!
Satisfied my protein hunger...good conversation with GB and at the end, I killed two birds with one stone by having this dinner.
Will probably not come back here anytime soon... Gotta find my new Korean spot in SF! -

Food: Not the best quality meat. The saeng gal bi was really dry and the bibim bap was just mediocre. I hate to say it but I think the haemul pajon was better at Playground. There also wasn't any rice paper :(
Maybe I'm too use to SoCal's korean bbq restaurants but this place was a bit of a disappointment. At least the service was good and there isn't ever a wait since Korea House is just next door. -
Review from Danny L.
Interesting how the "New" Korea House is located directly next to the "Original" Korea House. It's also interesting cause the "New" Korea House looks older and smaller than the "Original."
I guess the owners are the same? Not sure, but I tried both establishments within a week's time frame and I saw the same manager/owner both nights.
The food seemed better at the "original" location (not the new one) but the service was better. Probably because there weren't very many customers at the "New" location. The den jang chi gae (spicy bean paste soup) was hella watered down and powdery.... The worst I've ever had! But the sam gyup sal (pork slices), gal bi (short ribs), and the dae ji bul gogi (spicy pork) was pretty darn good.
Pretty solid Korean joint...Listed in: Korean euphoria!

This is the place I head to when I crave Korean food; I come here on a monthly basis. The bbq rib eye, stir fried kim chee with tofu, spicy pulled brisket soup, and kim chee soup are my favorites here. The small plate dishes are delicious, especially the cucumber kim chee. Make sure to ask for the lettuce to wrap the beef, rice, and sprouts. Then devour it like a lettuce cup. Give this place a try; you won't be disappointed.

I sat at my table waiting for my friends watching the next table over. There was a guy that looked about 70 sitting next to an Asian woman that was maybe 30, I make no judgment, and across from them was an older couple that looked very suburban.
This is one of those places where you can cook at your own table or they'll cook for you in the back, why you'd go to a restaurant to cook your own food I can never figure out. Sugar daddy, I guess I am making judgments, was doing all the cooking for the whole table. He used his chopsticks to put the meat on the grill, turn the meat over, serve the meat to the rest of the table, and eating with them. In his mouth the chopsticks would go and then out to take meat off the grill to put on someones plate. The whole thing was disgusting!
I had the Dolsot Bibimbap. It was good but I've had better. -

What do you do after you've been packing and moving furniture and boxes all day? You treat yourself to some good Korean bbq, that's what!
After hours and hours of moving, me, Eugy and donut Hen A. come here and do some serious eating.
2 orders of unmarinated kalbi
2 orders of marinated kalbi
2 orders of samgyupsal
1 order of marinated busot gui
1 kimchi jjigae
4 really big asahi
1 cham ee sul
and towards the end...
another order of marinated kalbi...
The waiter actually asked us if we were sure we wanted that much food. Um, yeah, actually we do.
The marinated kalbi was definitely my favorite. And the kimchi jjigae was so good. Went perfectly with the kalbi. Wash it all down with some ice cold beers. You got yourself a perfect dinner. -

I had stumbled upon New Korea House when I went to meet up with my friend during my vacation in San Franciso. I'm sure we can all agree that food tastes a lot better on vacation, right?
Well it wasn't exactly the case here. My friend had ordered bulgogi and I had the bibimbap. Everything tasted yummy but it's nothing that I can't order from Arizona.
Regardless, the place was clean, the staff was friendly, and the food tasted great. -
Review from Bryan K.

After wandering around Japantown looking for a second place to eat dinner after a disappointing first place to eat dinner, I decided to play it safe and come here. I had been here once before and it was an enjoyable meal. I considered going to Korea House practically next door, but it looked too fancy smancy. Its ironic that New Korea House looks older than the Korea House... but I digress.
We ordered the marinated kalbi, the bulgogi, the tofu soup with fish eggs (forgot the name), and of course soju... what's Korean food without soju? You have the option to grill at the table or have them cook it in the back. Grilling your own food, while novel in concept, well really sucks. You smell like bbq and you need to tend to your food instead of drinking and chatting with your buddy.
Anyway. The food is solid, probably the kalbi was my favorite. The banchan was decent. Surely not the best Korean food in the world, but consistently good. I would not be ashamed to bring friends, family, and out-of-town guests here. Besides, soju makes everything better. -

I've been to soooo many Korean places that I've lost count. And most of them are pretty good...like 4 stars good. But that's the problem. They're all kind of the same.
This place gets 4 too, but maybe just a smidgen of the fifth star for an outstanding dolsot bibimbap. Now if you're really into bbb, then you'll appreciate that their version isn't as dry as most of the other ones I've had. In fact, if you drizzle that tasty sauce out of the squirt bottle (which had just a little kick), then you've got a bowl of hot yummy goodness that hits the spot on a chilly San Francisco evening in December.
And if you could care less about the bbb, I can tell you their meats, chap chae (sp?), seafood pancakes, cold noodles and the little dishes were all good.
So there you have it: good food, reasonable prices, service with a smile, and PARKING (J-Town lot across the street). Oh! And they're great for groups. It's a spacious dining room for a SF restaurant and they have no problem accommodating large parties. -

3 Stars Overall, no big WOW factor when I ate here.
Food: 3 stars
I tasted better Korean food elsewhere. It was just bland, but the kimchi and other extras made it okay I guess. The price that we paid was a little high for our two dishes, the beef and the chicken that we cooked at our table, but then again it is Korean and it's usually expensive anyways.
Ambiance: 3 stars
The place didn't appear to be welcoming, maybe because it was really slow during the time I went, but the decor needs some updating. The place appeared to be well kept and clean.
Service: 3 Stars
Took our order, brought us our drinks, then our food. Just A-OK service, nothing really spectacular. -
Review from Fannie S.
So...we went to Japantown...to try Korean for dinner. Where to start....???!
Decor = nice, clean, awesome taxidermy (fishies). Decent lighting too. I can see my food!
Food = good. Good quality meat for BBQ'ing, more than a dozen side dishes, the grill is one of better ones I've seen set up in kbbq places. It's nice heavy metal, super hot, and they change the grill for ya if it gets too full of bric-a-brac. I learned something new... that side dish I like, it's acorn jelly. Omnomnom! Veggies were very fresh and good quality too. (Delicious mushrooms!!!!) The beef was thinly sliced but lean. The pork was delicious (but I wanted more hot-n-spiciness!), and the chicken was time-consuming to cook but worth the juiciness.
Drinks = I have no idea. I glanced at the menu but I didn't get to try the soju nor korean wines. They did however have some nice brown rice tea...which they kept full of hot water the entire duration of our stay.
Prices = moderate. It's never cheap for kbbq and this place is totally worth it! I had daeji bol go gi and an order of jap chae, it was around $35. But it came with side dishes and rice. Yes, it was a lot of food and like I said, it's worth the price for good quality!!!!
Parking = Jtown stuff, so look for it on the side streets, or take the public transportation.
Service = friendly, efficient, and I tried not to drool over the servers. (my tastes does not equate to yours. :-P)
Oh yeah, and they had to kick us out practically. It was closing time by the time we were done...and priceless moment, one dude showing the other dude how to swing a golf club. LOL (Oh and you most definitely leave smelling like BBQ, but suck it up!)Listed in: Koreanophile.

My ex-girlfriend was Korean and she inspired me with a love for Korean food. (Thank you even though you hate me, jk, no really)
I have gone to New Korea House, probably 5 times since I have moved here. (Almost a year woooo!) Every time the food has been delicious.
I usually order the Bi Bim Bap Dolsut. Make sure its Dolsut!! This means it comes in a stone bowl, sizzling hot, it is SO good.
The first time I was here it was for lunch, and let me stress that the lunch prices are about half to 2/3 less than the dinner prices. All the other times were for dinner. I have even taken a few Korean friends here and they say its pretty good. Now to American taste buds, when someone from the home country of the restaurant says the food is pretty good, to us that means its REALLY FUCKING GOOD.
However, I would recommend their lunch because of this:
Lunch for two ran me about $30 with drinks.
Dinner (same plates as the above lunch) for two ran me about $70 with similar drinks.
You decide. -

Probably my favorite Korean restaurant in SF.
Their Soondubu Chigae (tofu soup) is so so good, just the perfect amount of spiciness, and a very flavorful broth. Not watered down like some places. One of the best I've had.
Dolsot Bibimbap (mixed vegetables, rice, and meat/seafood in a hot stone pot) was also very delicious. Nothing like a hot sizzling bowl of rice, fresh veggies, thin slices of beef, and an over easy egg to top it off!. The best part is the crunchy rice at the bottom of the bowl..yum :) The meat in it was just ok though.
Banchan (side dishes) were fresh and super tasty here, and their kimchee was above average. My only complaint was the sider order of I mung bean pancake which was super oily and didn't have much veggies inside. -

This hit the spot!!
After a long day in Napa and about 3 days without eating Korean food...we came here to satisfy our Korean food cravings...Kimchee jjigae. Bulgogi. Ojinguh bokkeum. Out of the three...the ojinguh bokkeum was the best. Really tender, spicy yet not unbearably spicy. The other 2 dishes were good too...but it was not like momma's home cookin'. Nor were they like some of the L.A. Korean restaurant food good. We were still happy and satisfied though. The place is clean and the service was excellent. One of the best places I've eaten during my visit to SF...maybe it was just the Korean food cravings...but nevertheless...it hit the spot. -

Love this place. Go here at least once a month, get the Bul Bo Gi (beef on the BBQ), and usually switch up the other, Pork, Shrimp, we've even tried the mushrooms. I also love the stone bowl Bi Bimbap (sorry I'm sure I am misspelling all of this). And all the small plates you get when you order are great-- i love the cucumber, the kim chee bean sprouts, etc-- and they are happy to bring you seconds on the small plates if you want.
The place is great food and its fun to bbq it at your table. The only downside is that your hair will smell like bbq for the rest of the evening.
I've tried a few of the others, Brother's for example, which I heard is supposed to be better, but I thought both the meat and the atmosphere here were better so I keep going back....
