This is my staple place for all things teriyaki.  That's all I order here and that's the basis for my 4-star rating.  The regular chicken teriyaki is my favorite.  I don't recommend the chicken breast "upgrade' because it's too dry.  The teriyaki sauce is just sublime.  However, be aware that they prepare the beef teriyaki differently from that of the chicken.  The chicken teriyaki is prepared conventionally with teriyaki sauce glazed over grilled chicken.  However, for the beef, the meat is marinated in teriyaki sauce and is served without the teriyaki sauce glaze.  The beef still tastes great but some may be disappointed that there's no sauce.  I'm sure that you can get sauce on the side, but I've never asked.  I've sampled some of the sushi rolls, but I recommend sticking to the cooked foods (the teriyaki in particular).

I've been coming here for well over a decade and the experience has remained consistent.  They give you quality cooked food in generous portions at a great price.  They are open late so it's the perfect place to come and chow down after clubbing all night at Les Deux!  I recommend eating at the restaurant rather than taking out because it seems that the take out portions are a bit smaller.

The location is a little sketchy, with a parking lot that is quite tiny. However, as you make your way into the sushi restaurant, it feels like entering into a whole new world.

The restaurant itself is quite small and definitely catered towards struggling college students such as myself. Lots of UCLA students crawling around. To be completely honest, I thought this place was sort of cool, even though it wasn't exactly cream of the crop as far as Japanese restaurants.

Their entree portions are humongous and prices are fair and square. Though I can't really say the sushi was that great, because it wasn't, it was still a cool experience to watch basketball while eating sushi.

I would come back again.. but then again, don't go out of your way for it.

I pass by this place almost every day before I go to work. I've always brushed it off as another generic pseudo-Japanese restaurant. Afterall, the sign reads "New Japan Take Out". It didn't sound like the type of place I would enjoy eating. It didn't help that it was in a strip mall next to 7-11, subway, and dry cleaners.

A couple of friends invited me to eat lunch there on a weekend. Never one to turn down a cheap-lunch outing, I agreed to meet them there. And boy, was I surprised! The inside looks A LOT nicer than from the outside. It featured subtle Japanese embellishments -- wall art, sake bottles.. and dark wood tables. Not bad. The food selection was also very affordable for this neck of the woods.. Most of the dishes were under 10 bucks. There's sushi, ramen, udon, salads, teriyakis.. stuff that average japanese restaurants would have.

My favorite item on the menu is the salmon salad. This was exceptionally good for a fast-food Japanese restaurant. Thick slices of cooked salmon on a bed of alfafa sprouts, bean sprouts, tomatoes and greens. The light creamy japanese ginger dressing was amazing. It tastes so good when they toss it in the restaurant. When you take it home to go, you have to toss and flavor yourself obviously but it tastes fresh and delicious.

The beef teriyaki is also great, but skip the chicken breast teriyaki. Chicken breast tends to be a bit dry so it wasn't tender enough. If you do like chicken, I would wager that the 'dark' meat is probably more delicious.

Not a bad place at all -- affordable, fast, and delicious! One of my go-to places for a casual meal.

My first impression of New Japan from the outside: ghetto.

My first impression of the inside: garish.

But the food... good. For the price that you pay, you certainly get a lot. The quality of the food is very satisfying, and the fact that they have some bowls for $5 makes it a great bargain.

The biggest problem: parking. Half the (small) parking lot is reserved for 7-11. It's best to find street parking on Sawtelle. If anything, you can put in an order ahead of time and pick it up.

Ok, I went back today. And they're now advertising their $5 bowls. I ordered the spicy chicken (and it is spicy), and very delicious.

The only complaint is that they take too damn long. Unlike my last visit, I didn't call in, but that will not happen anymore. In any event, you will not be disappointed.

I am a total mysophob and never eat at establishments that do not have an A in the window. However, New Japan is the exception to my rule. Them having a B from the Health Dept. is the only reason I gave them 4 stars. They serve Japanese beer to go with your short ribs (delectable) or fresh sushi. Their salad (thinly sliced lettuce) and dressing is addictive. I could almost drink the dressing lol. But seriously try ANYTHING on the menu, you can't go wrong with any of it.

This is one of my favorite places for teriyaki. They have combos which allow you to get steak strips, chicken breast strips, tempura shrimp, tempura vegetables, salad and steamed rice for like 10 bucks. The plates are pretty big. They also let you bring in beer from 7-11 which is right next door. They are open very late so if you are hungry late night I would suggest to head over.

They also sell Sushi but I'm skeptical as to the freshness of the fish.

I used to come here a lot before I learned how to slice flank steak on a bias, marinate, grill, and make BOMB sticky rice to go with it.

I really don't want to contribute to this place's popularity because it's incredibly cheap and tastes great... but I really love this restaurant. It's open late (until 2?) thank god... $5 bowls... good portions... creepy guy sitting next to me who tried to pull my hair...whatever, excusable. I love them.

I really like this place. Call me cheap, but i appreciate a big plate of Teriyaki for $6-7. You can add a california roll for $2 extra. The sushi isn't bad. Its Calif Roll for god's sake, its all cooked meat, so you can't say the ingredients aren't fresh. I also sometimes get the Spicy Tuna roll (the right amount of spice). It is not awesome, but good. trust me, I have had worse Spicy Tuna Rolls at double the price.

The Chicken teriyaki is good, sauce is sweet and delicious. The beef too. Spicy chicken is not a bad option. I like getting the combo (chicken teriyaki and tempura). its a big platter of food.

Seating isn't bad. Plasma TV always plays some sports/ game. Self Seating, though they bring your food out.

If you're a girl, don't go to New Japan by yourself. Not unless you have a can of mace in your hand to ward off the sketchy parade going on in front of the 7-11 next door. And when I say sketchy, I mean SHADY AS ALL HELL.  I went with my friend and her muscular bf and we were both grateful for his presence.

That said, the food is awesome and the inside decor is kitschy but cute. But bring cash - they don't take credit cards.

I had the beef and sashimi combo with a salad for a recession-friendly $8.75. The salad was fresh and crispy and drizzled with some sort of delicious light dressing. The sashimi was surprisingly fresh as well. The piece de resistance, however, was definitely the meat. The small pieces of beef were cooked to perfection and came with generous amounts of rice. There was enough food for two meals but feeling greedy, I practically cleaned my plate.

They had a decent selection of Asian beverages as well and I happily grabbed a can of Oolong tea and debated getting a Calpico to go. I was so satisfied and full I barely noticed the person rocking and singing to herself in a corner as we walked out.

Affordable and decent Japanese food - I'd go here for a sit-down dinner. It's cheap because it's cash only. So sorry kids, you can't put this on your mom's Visa.

I got a plate of spicy chicken to take away. The serving was super generous, the chicken was cooked very well and was more spicy than flavorful (which is OK in my book), and the side salad was ample with a delicous dressing.

It's small, and there was only one person manning the cashier, waitress, and busboy positions. I like the decor of the place too - it brings it up from halfway decent to most-of-the-way decent!

I'll probably return again, maybe try a teriyaki plate or some rolls. Oooh, I heart Japanese American food.

OPEN LATE:
Until 1 AM. Come here for late night take out only.

PARKING:
Yes, the parking lot is tiny, probably a dozen spots for the whole
plaza. I'll order ahead for a quick pick up in case there's no parking.

FOOD:
Only gravitated towards beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, and short ribs.
You can get these in a combo that include vegetable tempura and a
salad. The boyfriend absolutely loves the dressing it comes with!

CASH ONLY:
They do have an ATM machine conveniently located inside. To
avoid fees however, I'll stop in the 7-11 next door and use my ATM
card to buy a small something to get cash out. Limit is $10.

OK food, decently priced, and open late. :)

When I passed by this place, I was enticed by the name. NEW japan? what the hell is NEW japan?

Anyway, I went here because I'm a retard and didn't fully read the reviews on Tempura house that said it closed at lunch. Anyway, the walls inside are pretty well-decorated, despite the fact that there are a grip of chinese decorations on the wall. I ordered the chicken and beef teriyaki with california rolls on the side. Obviously it wasn't the best Japanese food I've had, but for the price, its definitely worth it.

This place is a nice place if youre slightly low on funds and are craving japanese food. Or rather, NEW japanese food. Nothing too special though.

This place is pretty good for the price. The servings are quite big. My favorite has to be the Minced Tuna salad with Nacho chips and lettuce with this really good sesame dressing.
The Health Department gave them a B which is mysteriously hidden by a plant so you won't be able to see it until you walk in. Smart, i'd Say!

A B ranked Japanese place isn't ideal but this place won't give you the cramps. Don't worry. It is opened til 1am so if you're ever feeling hungry or you need a break from studying, (like us) i'd recommend this place. The sizes of the sushi and the taste of the ginger will hit the spot!

I have eaten lunch at New Japan twice within the last year at behest of my coworkers, and I regretted it both times. This past week when we ate there I ordered the chicken (with white meat) combination plate with an order of California Rolls. The chicken plate came with cut up chicken, a salad, and rice. The chicken was some of the dullest tasting, process white meat I have ever had. The only thing that made it half way decent was that it tasted like it was cooked on an open flamed grill. The salad was pretty good, and I am not the type to ordinary like salads, but I think that the dressing made the salad. The dressing kind of tastes like the sauce that Subway puts on their Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaky sandwich. Ironically there is a Subway a few doors down since their chicken and dressing both tasted like they came from Subway.
For the California Rolls, New Japan has a special where you can get an order for $2.00 with any plate order. $2.00 is cheap, but you get what you pay for as their California rolls are some of the nastiest I have ever tasted. Grocery store bought sushi is better in my opinion.
After eating at New Japan a couple of times, I would not recommend New Japan to anyone looking for good, fast Japanese food. I think a better alternative in the area would be Maya Japanese on Santa Monica Blvd.

Let's get this out of the way. New Japan is inconvenient because it's cash only and the parking lot is tiny. It's also located in a dirty looking strip mall, and the service was a little slow.
But.
The inside is a whole lot better-looking than the outside, and I had a great time in here.  A bunch of us showed up around 9:30pm and proceeded to "sake bomb," and the staff totally didn't mind the giant liquid mess we made.  Topped off the night at the neighboring 7-11 by purchasing Corn Nuts and lottery tickets. Fantastic.

i have mixed feelings about this place, but i find myself coming back for the $5 bowl specials, so that's gotta mean something right?

it's a small little japanese teriyaki place 2 blocks from my apt.. makes it pretty convenient and cheap for me to grab and go! they were having this $5 rice bowl special for a while, (i'm not sure if it's still going on..) but i figured it was a really good deal! the bowls were big and you can choose from a few different types of chicken bowls..spicy chicken, curry chicken, teriyaki chicken, etc)

however, sometimes the chicken can taste a little burnt. but since it's so cheap i never complain too much. you get what you pay for right?

another bad thing might be that they can be a little slow at times. and that they're cash only. if they took credit card i'd probably come here more often bc i'm the type to never have cash :T

all in all, it's a decent place if you're craving for some cheap teriyaki on the west side! sure beats going to yoshinoya!!!

What I like: a late-night Japanese restaurant, these are hard to come by, especially in my part of town.  I like that prices are cheap, and you can buy calpico to drink.

What I don't like: the food was not that great, not that authentic.  You know how you can tell if it's not a real Japanese restaurant?  They're tonkatsu is really thin.  I also don't like the giant fuzzy, makes me feel like I'm watching 3D without the glasses TV that hurts my eyes.  Or the long wait for the food.  Or the really cold atmosphere.

All in all, I will probably only be back if I'm out late, drunk, and craving ramen, but feeling too lazy to make it myself.

Beef & Chicken Combo.  mmmm.

The combo comes with a side of salad drizzled with this delicious Japanese dressing, lots of Chicken, Beef, Rice covered with sauce.  Mix in some Sriracha and you are good to go.  Costs about 10 bucks, but could very much feed two.

Just pulled into the Holiday Inn and needed dinner. New Japan was right across the street and a welcome sight.

The place is nicely decorated with Japanese-themed walls, but really sparse otherwise. It's next to the 7-11 and obviously focused on take out.

I found my meal cheap, fast and good! The spicy kimchi ramen was just as advertised: noodles were better than most and it nearly choked me with the spice -- this is a good thing!  I didn't enjoy the sushi as much but for the price it was a great deal.

I recommend New Japan for a quick, inexpensive, and healthy meal.

kudos to new japan for opening late and serving food at a decent price that wouldn't deplete a fellow college student's wallet (I'm not a college student myself but I certainly appreciate it as well).  I'm a sucker for raw salmon and this place definitely does not disappoint me...most of the time (a couple of times the fish wasn't really fresh but at 1 AM...it was the freshest fish around).  The shrimp tempura roll here is not bad either.  Their tuna stuff is not so good.  This place is a must if you want sushi past midnight. Do not settle for the mushy day-old sushi at Vons or Ralphs (seriously..don't even)!

If you're on a budget, the prices are very reasonable and the portions are huge.  The beef teriyaki and spicy chicken teriyaki are both excellent.  The yakisoba is very greasy, but the portion size is so large, it could easily last you for two meals.

Docking one star from this place for a bunch of reasons.  The first being cash only.  There is an ATM in-store, but it's still inconvenient.  Atmosphere is lacking.  There's a large rear projection TV that's older than I am and very blurry.  Parking is also a problem, as foot traffic in this mini-mall area is double the number of spaces available.  There's also typically a shady person convention going on in front of the 7-11 next door.  I do give this place credit for keeping prices reasonable during the recession.  I also give props to the Engrish name... New Japan Also Takeout.  Love it.

Decent food at a decent price. Most items are in the $6-$7-$8 range, then you can add on a side California roll for like $2.50

I got the spinach and chicken udon. Generous portion of spinach and seaweed. The chicken was actually breast meat that seemed to just be quickly seared w/o seasoning. I was surprised at the amount of chicken I got. There wasn't a ton of noodles and the broth was waaaaay salty. For the price and amount of food, I'm not complaining.

Cash only and parking is a pain in the butt!

This is my new favorite place.

Beef and Sashimi combo plate: ~$9.  It's a great quantity of food, with high quality beef for a fast casual place.

Food is delicious.  Every single bite.  I love it.

That is the only thing I order.  It was love at first bite.  I think you should try it.  Parking is a b*tch though, b/c the 7-11 next door has spots marked for its exclusive use.

We came here after working out.  The burly body-builder who was working out adjacent to us, ended up here also.   Satisfied with his "post-workout meal," he strutted to his car machismatically.

Taste, and gym-goer approved.

New Japan is a "place your order at the counter and pay" kind of restaurant.  It's kind of like Japanese fast food, but the decoration is much nicer than the normal fast food joint.  They serve everything from sushi, roll, sashimi, to teriyaki and tempura.  One Japanese girl was taking order (and money), while one Hispanic guy did the cooking (and making sushi) in the back.

I ordered a beef and sashimi combo.  It took them about 15 minutes to get the food ready.  It was slow, but at least I know the food was freshly prepared after I placed the order.  5 large pieces of fish: 1 salmon, 2 tuna and 2 white fish.  The sashimi was very fresh.  The yakiniku beef also came with salad.  I like their sweet and creamy salad dressing.  The BBQ beef was so flavorful and tender.  Delicious!  Only wish they would give me more rice.  Portion was big enough for my lunch and dinner.

I like New Japan.  Oh yeah, it's a cash only place.  Next time I'll place my order over the phone then go pick it up to save time.  I want to try their chicken next time.

Come on people... service is slow because there is 1 guys who takes you money, surves you as well as clean your table.
*sheesh*

The food is very inexpensive and they are open till 4 AM!
You can't expect Gourmet food at that hour can you?
Their fish is actually quite fresh and their teriyaki is good...

I would suggest sashimi vs sushi because the sushi rice isn't the best.
Every restaurant has their weaknesses and to be honest Ramen  is only good at restaurants specializing in Ramen.. try Ramenya on Olympic a block east of  Barrington, but they ar not open late like most places.

MY YUMMY LIST:

Yellow Tail Sashimi
Salmon Sashimi
Sashimi salad
Spicy tuna roll

The teriyaki is really good at this place.  I personally love their chicken teriyaki.  It is probably one of the best chicken teriyaki's I've had.  It is definitely something not to pass up when visiting this establishment.  The sushi is decent as well.  I ate it.   I am still alive and eating at this place.

The pricing for the food is good too.  I can eat myself full and not feel like I need to stop to keep myself from going broke.

This place by far has THE best  teriyaki I've ever had.
before the finals.... I would have New Japan teriyaki for my breakfast and I would Ace the Finals hahaha, believe it or not.
Anyhow, they have very fresh materials and awesome sauce!
Very reasonable price for giant portion!
if you are a UCLA student and have never tried New Japan....dude.. you missed out.

Anyways, it's sort of ..hard to find... but it's right next to 7/11 near the ghetto area...but all that matters is that food is Amazing!
self service though, and also...don't forget to bring Cash!
they do have ATM machine but charges you extra 3 dollars that you probably can get another california roll for.
Anyways, awesome place, must try!

Sure the place may not have the best food, decor, location, service etc and etc, but this places holds a special place in my heart.

As a starving ucla undergrad, i used to frequent this joint with my friends.  Back then all we wanted was some chill place where we can eat a decently tasty meal, mebe drink some beer and relax.  All on a budget!  And newjapan provided that and much more.

We got to know the owner, Rocky (pretty nice guy), and some of the servers and they would totally hook us up with free dishes and drinks...

Man, i haven't been there in years since i graduated...so I can't be too sure how accurate my description of this establishment may be at this moment, but going from my memory, it's a great place for some late night munching and just enjoying yur friends' company.

I ate there 10 years ago. Yes, 10 years ago and I still remember my experience there and feel compelled to share it with you. I got one word for you: ROACH.

I was just about done with my meal there when I saw a roach leisurely ambling down the mirrored wall. When I pointed it out to the manager, he took a rag and scooped up the roach and crushed it simultaneously, without saying so much as another word to me.

Yum!

Well this is my favorite Japonese place within dog-walking distance from my place. I really like the beef or chicken terriyaki plates. It comes with a small lettuce salad and white rice. Hmm.

Downsides, parking is hard at the strip mall when the mall is slammed. But there is also a 711 where you can pick up beer or ice cream to go along with your take out.

They have a big screen and usually put the games of interest to local fans on. Also its cash only with their own rip off ATM. But its a great place to get dinner from when I don't feel like cooking.

This place is good for basic Japanese food.  Nothing special, but decent terriyaki, katsu, and tempura.  I usually order the chicken terriyaki / tempura combo.  The udon is surprisingly good too.  The sushi is cheap, but passable.
I usually come here when I end up working after 10 on weeknights and get  take out.  I recommend this place for basic, no frills japanese food - especially late at night.  But don't expect to be wow'ed.

If you care about service, there's no table service.  You go to the counter and order and they bring the food to your table.  There's a guy that runs things seems to know what he's doing, but once in a while there's a girl who works there who seems to barely be aware of her surrounds - she's slow and has messed up my order.

Sushi as made by Latinos.  Heh.

It's really average, but the price gets it another half star, up from 2.5 to 3.  The teri is NOT "the best" like so many deluded here think.  Hide Sushi's teri wipes it out down the street on Sawtelle.  But the fact that it stays open late and cheap prices make it a choice over cheap corporate food at night.
