We arrived around 10pm and the front desk staff quickly gave us a room with queen bed.  We came in, it was large and comfortable, everything seemed ok except for the fixtures are a bit old - it's an old hotel.  The shower didn't work well but we survived it.  When we went to bed, we found there's noise right beside the room, probably some steam machine - i don't know.  We called the front desk and waited for a few minute.  Nobody replied.  My wife called again and they said we can change a room.  My wife went down to get the key, we changed the room.  The shower in that room is much better, and it's very quiet.  We had a good sleep.  If not due to the bad experience with the 1st room, I would have given better rating.  The lobby of the hotel is nicely decorated, really old world style.  The staffs seemed friendly - though we were given a bad room for the 1st time, which they could have given us a good one since there were a lot of rooms available apparently - not sure whether because they found we bid from Priceline and paid less.

The location is very good.  It's on a back street and steps to the central green and Yale's old campus.  New Haven is not a big city so everything is close.

They would ask for $15 valet parking if you have a car.  If you don't mind, you can find street parking on all nearby streets.  There are also several parking garage nearby, one of them across the street.

There's often something both unsettling and thrilling about staying in a hotel in a town that you lived in for 5 years, and my stay at the New Haven Hotel this past weekend was no exception.  First, the unsettling:

1.  The bed.  What at first glance appears to be a king-size turns out to be two TWIN-size beds pushed together.  For real, two headboards and everything!  Also, our bedspread looks like it was purchased in approximately 1972, and there are no blankets.  I mean, I'm down with buget lodging and all that, but early spring in New England is COLD!  Hook a sister up, will you?

2.  The rest of the furnishings were equally dated and showed very noticeable signs of wear, including an extraordinarily conspicuous and suspect stain on the arm chair....ew.

3.  CREEPY-ASS Victorian-style portraits on the wall.  Who are these people and their babies staring down at me as I'm trying to fall asleep?  Do not like.  No.  Leave me alone.

4.  The light in the bathroom comes on about 3 seconds after the fan, which leaves you standing in complete darkness yet surrounded by loud rattling noises just long enough for you to start freaking out.

OK, now the thrilling:

1.  Free Wi-Fi!  As trapped in the late 20th century as it is, NHH scores a big star for giving us free wireless in the room.  Very useful for finding pizza delivery at 3 am.

2.  The location is superb.  Smack in the middle of downtown New Haven, we're able to walk absolutely everywhere, including the wedding, the wedding-after party, and the after-wedding-after-party snacks run to the deli.

3.  Um...oh!  Yankees network on the TV, so we could watch the game while getting ready for the wedding.  Then, when we got back, we could watch them blow it on the Yankees Encore broadcast.

All in all, completely fine place to stay.  Downtown New Haven has about 3 hotels, so you're pretty much guaranteed to stay here if you don't want to cough up the $$ for the Omni.  I'd just maybe recommend taking the pictures off the wall if you want to get a good night's sleep.

I stayed here before I lived here as it was very central to Yale's medical campus, but didn't have the same price tag as the Omni.  It's a little worn around the edges, and could have a cafe or two right next to it, but it's still a great value, comfortable, and the staff is very nice.  You have free wireless in your room, and everything was extremely clean.

I was here on business, so I didn't really get to check out all of the hotels facilities, but overall it was pleasant.  The rooms were clean and they had free wireless, all I really need.  It is convenient to Yale medical school and hospital.  It's proximity to the hospital might explain why the other guests all seemed a bit old.

The first night I ate at the restaurant since I didn't want to wander around at night in a place I didn't know well.  I wouldn't recommend it.  A bit like the cheesecake factory.  Huge portions, and the food isn't good but there must be MSG in it because you keep on eating it.  At breakfast the two servers seemed to be fighting with each other which was a bit amusing.

UPDATE: This time I didn't notice as many older guests.  The staff was terrific.  I stayed one night and then got stuck in town due to weather on the second night.  Even though they didn't have rooms they gave me one.  I guess they assumed there would still be more cancellations later in the evening, but they didn't make me wait for those other cancellations before letting me get into a nice warm cozy hotel room.
