I love this place. You get rice, soup, a fairly large dish, and tea all for under $6 at lunch. There are alot of menu options. Most of the dishes are made to mimic meat, which is good, since I'm a vegetarian and miss the taste of meat. The servers are very friendly and attentive. You often get monks in there which adds to the ambiance. Parking has never been an issue for me either.

Review from Ken C.
My sister was in the mood for Vegetarian and we really enjoyed Happy Family in Monterey Park, so we decided to come here since it's closer to us.
Unlike the Happy Family in Monterey Park, there is no all you can eat option here. Food is a la carte, which can make it cost a little more.
Quality of the food is comparable, but I felt like the Happy Family in Monterey Park was a little better. Plus I couldn't find some of my favorite dishes from the other location. They had some interesting menu items here...got to try their fish substitute, chicken substitute, and shrimp substitute and they were tasty.
All in all, the food was not bad and the service was excellent, but the food wasn't quite as good as the other location off Atlantic in Monterey Park. -

This particular Happy Family is a bit out of the way and hidden, but I like it that way. It has a completely different vibe from the one on Atlantic in Monterey Park.
You walk in and will be greeted by a tank of orange goldfish to your left. These are the safest goldfish in the world although they don't seem to know that, and group up at the corner of the tank to put a nervous eye on every platter that passes by them. Then they count their numbers and are always relieved that none of them are missing.
I've had a couple of large family functions here and it's perfect for that, especially if there are vegetarians in your group, as well as open minded omnivores. No haters. This is "Happy Family", so whiners can stay at home. The big parking lot helps with that.
If you go with a large group, reserve a private room. All the wonderful dishes are put on a lazy susan so that they can be rotated for true family style eating.
Like all the HF's, they offer an all you can eat lunch, but if you miss it like me and my eating partner did yesterday, they have a surprise. There is a list on a plaque on the table with about 6 dishes. If you order two regular dishes, you get one of these free. If you order three regular, you get two free. That works out to over 30% in savings. And, unlike the all you can eat, you are allowed to take the extra stuff to go.
I ordered a "sausage" hot pot. It was really fun. It's a big bowl of thick broth resembling hot and sour soup with lots of veggie sausage, some pickled cabbage or bok choy, bamboo, and various other things. The pot sits over an enclosed flame so the soup stays boiling hot for the entire meal.
I've been more thrilled with other dishes, but it was not bad. We also ordered the eggplant with brown sauce, which comes on a large platter, easily enough for two, as well as a seafood dish. Both were delicious and delicately flavored.
If you're not used to this type of thing and want to hold onto the rails, dishes like orange chicken, and sweet and sour pork are always good bets. The Chicken is made from mushrooms, the pork is a gluten/vegetable protein, with a bready "stick to your ribs" consistency. Both will satisfy a sweet tooth.
Our bill came to $20 including tax, and tea, and oranges for dessert. We even had food to take away for later.
Another happy experience. -

If you have ever been to the original Happy Family Restaurant, this place is a spin off of that. The original Happy Family Restaurant was really good. This is not as good, but is not that bad.
It has a very nice vegetarian style decor and they have a private room if you ever want to have a banquet.
The menu imitates that of Happy Family but it is a totally different restaurant hence the NEW happy family restaurant.
Unfortunately, I like the old one better.
The General Tso's chicken is crunchy here instead of juicy at Vege Wok. A lot of the dishes are smaller and saltier. They have some good dishes still though, like their sushi hand wraps.
I dont frequent here though, but its still good food overall. -

The food and service are both good here. I haven't been to the other Happy Family locations, so I guess I'll try the Monterey Park location next time. The strange thing at this location is the two toilets NOT separated by a stall wall in the women's restroom. Isn't there some sort of a building code...? Anyway, the food was good and fresh. The prices are very low. They use the meat substitute products for chicken, fish, etc. so even though I liked the food, it would be more exciting to see them make creative dishes without resorting to the fake-out meats.

A big no no. If you like vegetarian chinese food you may like this place, but most items I've had here were horrible. At every table when seated you have a plate of pickled cabbage. something you get with your meal at small chinese cafes like do re mi in san jose. The appetizer I had consisted of fish, seaweed, unknown orange jellies, weird/ really disgusting tofu with shrimp and a lettuce bowel with candied walnuts. The restroom is a seperate man and woman kind, but with the womens' it's 2 toilets in the same room. no stalls. just 2 close wide opened let's watch each other do our business next to each other toilets. i really don't know what the designer was smoking...luckily though there is a mr.baguette not too far by.
