My fam's been going here for fried drumsticks for years. I haven't had them for awhile, so today, my mom got me my own little box. They were just as delicious as I had had them years ago! They are lightly battered, flavored well, bite size and super yummy. I don't know of any place that can fry drumsticks up as good as New Golden Daisy in Chinatown!
This is a take-out joint. All customers order at the counter. Make sure you don't get stomped on by the older Chinese folks. They can be fierce!
Out of all the Chinatown butcher joints, with all kinds of chinese BBQ and fast Chinese food by the pound, New Golden Daisy wins for two items.
It's the go-to place for a) BBQ Pork b) Chinese fried chicken drummettes. Especially scrumptious if you get there just as the chicken is fresh out of the fryer. (It makes a pretty significant difference...cold vs. hot & fresh...maybe you can ask them when the next new batch would be coming out!) Don't get me wrong--the drummettes aren't particularly innovative nor famous. It's just the best batch in Chinatown. And $3.30/lb, filling up a standard-sized Chinese to-go box + a little more.
If its got my mom's approval, then it's Golden (ha). I'm also a fan of their quick 'n dirty chow mein. $1.85/lb, and I really only need half a pound. Can't beat that, no no. Yom yom!
Thanks for the reminder, Gloria H!
I frequent New Golden Daisy so often that as soon as I walk up to the counter I'm asked how many pounds of the delicious little chicken drummettes I want. I can easily consume two pounds in one sitting. Like many I grew up on the miniaturized versions of chicken drumsticks and New Golden Daisy just happens to make the best tasting ones around.
My dad likes their roast pork so from time to time I'll surprise one of the men behind the counter and ask them for a pound of roast pork to go with my chicken drummettes. This is one of the few MSG laden foods I will devour without hesitation. Love them!
We always check to see if they have a new batch of the tasty fried chicken drumettes when we pass by. If yes, I'll go in and buy 4-6 pieces to munch on w/ my hubby. If it's on a day when I'm picking up food for family gathering, I'll pick up 3-4 pounds and they'll load up the biggest box available...they are such big hit with everyone and there's never any left over.
The men here are really nice. When you order 4 pieces, that's exactly what they'll get for you - they NEVER try to upsell you or give you more than what you ask for unlike all other places in Chinatown.
Besides the fried chicken, their soy sauce chicken wings are very tasty too! They are very juicy and not too salty.

Did the cook from Gourmet Kitchen come here?!? I swear those little devils (chicken drumettes)… Read more »
I'm not as convinced on the chicken wings as the rest of the reviewers. They were fairly tasty, but not out of the world extraordinary. Truth is, I'm not a big fan of chicken wings in general, so I hoped that this small hole-in-the wall would blow my mind, but I was disappointed. Do they ever come out fresh? I seemed to always buy the lukewarm ones the three times I went. :( Head remains affixed.
I picked up some other dishes, chow-mien, duck, fried rice, tofu, etc, but they were all ordinary. And cold.
Super cheap though, so I won't complain.
I can't possibly imagine how any damn gringo would know about this place were it not for Yelp. There are only a billion chinese duck-hangning-in-the-window places lining the street and somehow an internet social site pointed me to one that had some CRAZY chicken wings. Not a whole bunch of english was spoken during my order- I point, say "box", dude picks up a box, I nod. He packs it with about 25 wings and I give him a 20. He hands me back 16.50.
The wings were AWESOME- totally worth the cost of a plane ticket and a hotel room.
First meal in San Francisco! I came here based on the good Yelp reviews...guess I should have scanned more thoroughly to see that chicken wings are their specialty.
I got some of the chow mein which was OKAY since I was starving by that point...too bland & greasy to be anything more than okay. I also got some of their BBQ pork...again, a bit too greasy for my enjoyment. Not bad...but nothing I couldn't get from the Chinatown in Houston. Luckily, the prices are super cheap.
Prior to today's adventure, I had only tasted the goodness of New Golden Daisy's chicken wings when they had been brought home to me in a to-go box. To celebrate my co-workers b-day, I led him and another co-worker on an adventure to buy some wings! We got 2lbs between the three of us...so cheap (just over $3/lb)! The chicken wings are dry coated and super tasty. Not sure how to describe them--you just need to try them yourself. We had some bbq pork chow mein and string beans to go with it.
We decided to go down to the park where the old men play Chinese checkers. Because we had no plates and just forks, we passed the to-go boxes around like a bottle of beer trading after each bite. It felt sort've ghetto, but it's ok because it was damn tasty!
Keep in mind this is not a sit down restaurant. So, grab some food to go and take it to a nearby park to eat.
Delicious fried chicken drumettes. They're much better if you eat them while they're still hot, although there is no place to sit down in here and no parks nearby. I just ate them walking back to work.
For $3.90 (cash only) I got a pound of them, which was enough to fill a large Chinese takeout container, or about 20 in total. They are not spicy at all, just slightly garlicky or oniony. I prefer the "Drums of Heaven" at Eric's, but those are like $5 for 5 of them.
The drumettes are only four stars, but the price and authenticity of the place bumps it to five.
This was not on original itinerary so I did not get to research it via yelp, I was walking by and saw that they had BBQ pork and flat noodles. Because of my amazing experience with the egg custard I assumed that everything in Chinatown was as good as gold.
My assumption was proved wrong very quickly. The flat noodles were totally blah, greasy and tasteless. The BBQ pork was OK, but nothing I couldn't get in Houston. I wish I would have read about the fried chicken, I saw it and it looked yummy but I wasn't really in the mood for fried chicken at the time.
the BEST fried chicken ever.
i would eat this every day, but i don't want to die of a fried chicken induced heart attack.
New Golden Daisy's fried chicken is a childhood favorite of mine. A return here these past few weekends to feast on the miniature fried chicken drum sticks was a tasty trip down Memory Lane for me. Nostalgia aside, this is how the Chinese do fried chicken at their best and boy is it finger lickin' good.
If you don't mind old Chinese ladies cutting in front of you to get to the butcher's counter, make sure to order the chicken drummettes that have a breading that kind of looks like the top of a coffee crumb cake (photo:http://www.yelp.com/bi...). They serve a variety of wings, but the drummettes are the best by far and they at New Golden Daisy know this as they have a much larger pan for these as opposed to the other fried chicken they sell. One pound of the good stuff will run you less than $4. Seriously, it is some of the best fried chicken you will ever have and you can take that to the bank.
BABY CHICKEN WINGS!!!!!! WOOT WOOT!
OH BABY. You'll never wanna eat popeyes and kfc anymore! It tastes so yummy, bit its so fating. :[
Quite possibly the most delicious and dirt cheap fried chicken wings. I like the wings better then the drumettes. Drumettes are so vainy.
These lil bad boys are awesome! Woke up from my nap starvvinnggg so I went to pick up $10 worth of chicken and man, was it mmm mmmm GOOD. Totally satisfied the post nap craving.
The secret to getting service in non-existent lines in Chinatown stores? It's height and/or $. If you're Lord of the Ring in height, you should not have a problem, but if you're not so graciously awarded in stature, flash a green bill when you raise your hand to get service. Money talks in these parts, folks. Seriously.
For my *upcoming* birthday, I'd like a pound of their crispy, yummy-bad-for-you small fried chicken drumsticks and some chow mein. Getting my bills ready...
So typing and looking for Yelp's best chicken wing, New Golden Daisy pops up as #1. While I am a huge huge huge fan of Double Decker, the fried chicken wings were fantabulous. I totally understand the liquid crack. There is a oily tasty almost ... I can't really describe it. I can say that it is definitely tasty enough to go there and try it. You will like it. Its sold by the pound. I think I paid for 1.5 pounds and it was like $3.50. Walking back to take the bus down the way the girlfriend and I polished off the pound and a half. The batter has some green little fried in green onion and something else. I will write again for the rest of the food.
the. best. chicken. drumettes. ever.
my husband and i ate 3 lbs in one sitting. i used to eat these drummettes when I was younger (my grandpa bought the best ones for us in chinatown) and haven't had drummettes as yummy as these since then!
So after doing a Yelp search for fried chicken in the Financial District, I was directed to this spot. I never expected to go to Chinatown for fried chicken, but i was getting pretty tired of the usual $2.99 six-inch sub at Subway and the the two item combo at New Asia (Crocker Galleria). Since I consider fried chicken to be the greatest culinary invention, I decided to give this place a try.
I probably would have not walked the half-mile journey but the 4 star rating got me curious. Once I arrived I was a little skeptical due to its hole in the wall appearance but I surely was not going to leave without anything, considering all the walking i just did.
Now the chicken drummettes are really good and dirt cheap too, I especially like the fact they are the small variety not the large sized wings, which i sometimes assume to be from local pigeons.
I got a pound of wings and was content with my purchase. I would have given the place 5 stars but the dude gave me a rude look when I asked if he had any hot sauce. Nonetheless, the place does have some good wings. Definitely will be back...... with my own hot sauce.
i'm not big on fried chicken, but i go to new golden daisy for their char siu (bbq pork)... it's not too salty and not too sweet... it's the happy medium with a tinge of garlic... if you don't like fatty char siu then make sure to request less fat... you order by the pound... should be somewhere between $4.60 to $4.80 for a pound of char siu... for char siu, new golden daisy is my go to place off of stockton... h-100...
My go-to place for wings when I'm in Chinatown. Best tasting fried chicken wings I've ever had. Probably seasoned with a lot of MSG but I don't care. I ate about 10 pieces ($3.37) for lunch today. I actually never tried the other food they have so this review is just for the wings.
My co-worker just bought a new house. So he and his family decided to have a Christmas party and invited his close colleagues including me and my family to his party.
The only catch was it was a potluck party; we got to bring our own food to share with others. I can dig that!
Thanks goodness, Chinatown is there to save our ass, because of the possible variety of quick meals and catering. We decided to grab the usual:
-10lb Chow mein in an Aluminum pan for $15.00
-5 lb of pieces of Roast Pork for $25.00
-5lb worth of Chinese Broccoli for $10.00
and 5lb worth of the popular garlic drummettes for $25.00.
If you come during noon, it's not necessary to call ahead; just as long there are food available and the kitchen is still cranking.
The Chinese deli is best known for the small drummettes and that is one of our favorites. Unfortunately, since I'm "under the weather", I wasn't able to eat any of these items from the party. But I've had every deli item from Golden Daisy in the past since childhood and still enjoyed the food.
I paid the catering in cash, in which is all they accept. The workers were very helpful and brought the food to my double-parked van. And yes, my van does smell like the garlic-chicken too!
Thank you Chinatown for providing us with cheap, greasy, and yummy food! I have been here several times and even though it's quite a trek from where I work (about a 15-20 min walk with hills and all), it's totally worth it!
Jessica S., another coworker, and I went there today because they were craving some fried chicken. Luckily there was no line when we got there around 12:45pm. They ordered 1 big pail of chow mein and 1 giant pail of fried chicken drummettes for $11-$12 and I just got a mini pail of chow mein for $2! Super duper cheap since the chicken is probably going to last them the rest of the week! I got to use my Cantonese skills and it's nice to get some real life practice also.
The chow mein contains more than just noodles...it has a nice blend of celery, Chinese BBQ pork, bean sprouts, and onions. It's not super salty or overly greasy which is great. I tried some of the fried chicken drummettes and those are definitely greasy! They are pretty small drumsticks but the way they are fried, makes them finger-licking good! Come here for a quick, cheap, and filling meal...if you aren't watching your weight.
you better walk in knowing what you want- especially if you arent chinese
these women are intimidating
The only item worth visiting this deli for is their fried chicken drummettes. We also got some of their chow mein, which was thin noodles, vegts (onions) and bits (need a magnifying glass to see them). The chow mein is OK, nothing great. We got a pound of their roast pork, it was very lean and dry and not good tasting at all. Stick with the chicken drummettes. The servers get upset if you don't speak Cantonese!

I had to see for myself what everyone was yelping about...so i walked there one bright afternoon during lunchtime and got myself 2 pounds of the deep fried drummettes
1) There was no line even at 12.15p on a weekday
2) Superfast and efficient service
3) $3+ a pound
4) VERY Tasty Chicken. OMG. So much better than safeway or any other deli chicken by the pound. The size of the drummette is also about 2x as big as Safeway's. It was meaty for a drummette
5) It Was still crispy after i microwaved it (optimal :30)
This is a super no fuss place. no seating area. it's just like a chinese deli.
I'll definitely be back!
I liked the drumettes...but I think the secret is to get them fresh from the fryer so they are nice and hot. They weren't as hot but admittedly, since there isn't any seating or places to sit and eat nearby, we had to walk back to Union square to sit on something and eat our drumettes and chow mein. The chicken was good. Chow Mein was okay.
I love this place!!! The best duck and roast pig I have ever had. AND it's cheap! $10.50 for a whole duck. Whatever they marinade the duck in is delicious. My bf and I can finish a whole duck by ourselves in one day:)
I haven't tried their other items (char siu, fried chicken, noodles, etc), but judging by the duck and roast pig I am sure it's pretty good. I think it's a testament to the place when everything is practically gone by the end of the day.
I love it here even if it doesn't look super clean =)
Their fried chicken drummettes (jow gai bay) are indeed very tasty as stated by fellow yelpers. Definitely worth the trip to Chinatown to get them.
This is basically a Chinese pre-cooked food place for take outs so don't expect to eat in.
I haven't tried anything other than the chicken legs yet so the jury's still out on their other offerings.
Wings! Wings!
I love chicken wings, especially the salt/ pepper with no bbq. Just fried them up and give me some.
I needed some wings for my sis bday since I volunteered to bring some.
I don't speak mandarin so I just pointed and said chicken wings 4 lbs.
$15 later, I had 2 chinese take out boxes in my kitchen. Very fast and efficient. Will definitely come back again and make sure to bring cash.
Oh and park in Chinatown, unless you know how to park parallel in chinatown-goodluck!
Move aside buffalo, bbq, and yes, even you hot wings! There is a new master of wingdom in town and it is here at New Golden Daisy! There are two different types of wings - the fried and soy and it seems to me that the fried is the clearcut winner. So cheap, so delicious...sooo amazing!! Word to the wise: skip on the chow fun. You know you're coming here for fried wings so don't even bother letting your eyes wonder to anything else.
we had a 7:30 dinner reservation @ schnitzlehaus and the fatties we are were waiting for our beloved bar crudo for some arctic char and kumomoto pre dinner snack(spoiled, i know) so to kill time we hoped on the bus to pick up some egg custard tarts @ golden gate bakery when we got there the sign said closed for vacation till aug 22(psh..lucky) so we walked around china town and decided to look for the supossedly "best chicken drummettes in sf"
I'm not sure what the hype is about. I mean, the chicken was nice and tender but the flavoring was nothing special. well i guess if you've been brought up with kfc and popeyes all your life then you're in for a treat. Its a standard asian chicken wing dish. Salt&pepper and the other thats marinated in a sweet soy sauce. The upside though, is we got a dozen wings for around $3.50!
It's gooooooooooood!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, I admit it, I was skeptical at first. I mean, how good could chicken drumettes possibly be? Either way, I kept an open mind and went there this afternoon. Picked up chicken drumettes and some chow mein to go. Wasn't too impressed with the appearance of the chow mein when I first saw it in the bin and remember thinking to myself, "This chow mein is all noodles." Eating it though, it wasn't bad at all. Way better than I initially thought when I first saw it and I guess it's above average. I would order it again, although I certainly wouldn't come just for the chow mein.
The chicken, however, was a totally different story. I wouldn't say it was orgasmic, but dang, that's still some pretty darn good chicken. There's a certain something in there that I just can't put my finger on. I don't know what it is, but whatever it is, it keeps you craving more and makes you continue eating, even after you're completely stuffed. Lunch was an hour ago and as I sit here typing this, I can still taste and crave that certain something. It's like some kind of sweetness. No wonder another Yelper put the expression "liquid crack" in their review about this chicken. Not one to easily jump on the bandwagon, but I'm now a believer...they truly are the best drumettes.
Prices are extremely reasonable too, especially for what you get.
My old boss once told me that a true oenophile (wine enthusiast) does not drink $100 bottles of wine every day, but rather finds joy in finding that special something, that extraordinary find that brings great pleasure at a fraction of the cost. I believe the same goes for food and a true foodie or epicure delights in finds like this.
I will most definitely be going back for the chicken.
Parking is a nightmare...I ended up just parking at the parking garage up the street next to the Hawaii West bar which is across the street from the police station. An easy solution and not too far from Gino & Carlo's bar or The Saloon (love these bars!) either, but that's a story for another day.
So after nearly 2yrs as a lurker I finally decided to write my first review... as what's more appropriate for me to review than FRIED CHICKEN!
I walked over to New Golden Daisy for lunch yesterday after reading the other reviews and I must say I was impressed with the quality and the price. I ordered 1lb each of the Chicken Driumlettes, BBQ Spareribs and Chow Mein and paid $11. The chicken was by far the highlight, but everything was pretty tasty.
This place is my new favorite Chinese deli and I am content with believing that it's an accent Chinese secret that allows them to keep their prices so low!
First of all...I came here with only 5 dollars in my pocket. Hey! I use credit cards a lot ok? Stop judging me! Anyway, I asked the cook what I can get with 5 bucks! He stared at me blankly and told me that I could feed the entire village with 5 bucks! So, he hooked me up with 3 chicken drummettes...3 To Fu and fried rice. Also, he gave me 50 cent as part of rebate.
I gotto agree that the chicken drummettes are freaking delicious. Their To Fu is pretty decent. Anyway, lets talk about chicken drummettes shall we?
It's crispy on the skin and soft on the meat. I can guarantee you that once you go Daisy, you won't go back to KFC nor Popeye. As of July 2008, this is the best chicken drummettes I have in town.
They stuff by the lbs here, cheaper then microwave meat. It is good and cheaper then Safeway's chicken wings, drumstick are a bit bigger. Support local businesses in Chinatown.
Fargin Delicious Chicken drumettes. The best i've had in Cali. Its all about the marination.... salt, white pepper, corn starch, "secret" rice wine, sugar, MSG, and soy bean oil. Im positive i got 90% of the their recipe correct.
Reminds me of when i was a kid, and you get fried chicken as a treat cuz, its so not good for you. A bowl of rice, a bowl of chicken, some soup, and some veggies. Hot damn, comfort food at its best.
Avoid parking in the area, you are better off walkin to the joint, than circling for hours for a space.
This is good place to pick up some Chinese style fried chicken, and they know how to fry their chicken right. I had these chicken since I was a kid and it's been the same all these years, very tasty, there are some other places try to copy them but they're just not the same. When I go, I always get:
Fried Chicken Drumsticks (the little ones)
Chow Mien
and a couple items that looks good that day.
You pretty much can't go wrong picking up food here, they're all very good or at least decent. O and I always go to the small Dim Sum place next door ( to the left ) and pick up some Shrimp Dumplings or bake bbq pork buns, they are very good too. Try them.
This place has the best FRIED CHICKEN DRUMLETTES of ALL OF SF! damnnn the flavors just burst into your mouth... you'll never find fried chicken drumlettes like this anyways in SF. These aren't salt and pepper, nor are they fried like San Tung, this place is different. My mom has been buying chinese deli food from here for my whole life.
Once you pop... you can't stop....! i can eat about 50 of these to my self. YUM!
New Golden Daisy is one of many Chinatown hot-and-ready food spots to get your roasted meats and chow mien. For my lunch, I only had two menu items - the fried chicken drummettes and the chow mien, but I'll talk about the chicken since it is the big deal here. They are good, sitting on the border of great. It might be batch specific, but I felt that some of the drummettes were overcooked or dried out a bit. Also, it doesn't have that much batter on the chicken - not that I want a lot, but perhaps a touch too little. But the light batter does let your really get into a groove and the next thing you know, you've got 20 bones in your plate! But all in all, I just feel like I've had a more enjoyable Chinese style fried chicken wing elsewhere.
