i've been coming here for quite a few years now. about 8 years actually, The location is very convient since it's on the main stockton street and its located on the intersection of popular bus lines and it's along the way home for me.
Pricing is affordable. Over the years, I've been out later so by the time i drop by, the shrimp wrapped dish that i usually got when i was a kid usually got sold out by then but the worker recommended some other items on the menu to try out and turns out those were good too. now i go there for those. I dont know the english translation for the names thou. ill post a note if i find out

Great place to go if you're hungry and low on funds. The dim sum is large and cheap, although it lacks love, finesse and spice.

It's definitely worth trying once, if you happen to be hungry & nearby.

After standing there with my $2 in hand, watching the staff shout in conversation across the restaurant for 3 solid minutes, they finally acknowledged me.

Dumplings were average and lukewarm. I also got a small chow mein ($1.50) which was kinda bleh. I should've known not to buy it considering it was sitting out on a hot plate and not covered up or anything. They also sell pastries here but I didn't try them. I probably won't be back.

Sorry, I know this isn't very helpful but...I do what I want.

This morning, as I was walking up the massive Sacramento hill to work, I thought to myself, "Self, dim sum sounds really good today."

Of course, being the glutton that I am, I didn't really want to wait until lunchtime to get some, so I walked down Stockton and saw New Fortune right around the corner.  Unfortunately, I didn't have my phone with me, so I couldn't Yelp it right away, so I took a chance.  Carpe diem.

I ordered the minced meat inside the sticky rice bun (haam sui gok), a BBQ pork bun, a custard bun, and an egg tart.  I also picked up a cup of coffee for coworker, and my grand total was $3.20.  What a great start to CCG's morning!

The BBQ pork bun maybe warranted 2 stars.  There was way too much bun, and the BBQ pork wasn't drenched in that ooey-gooey BBQ saucy goodness that I love so much.

The custard bun was also about 2-3 stars with the same story: too much bao, not enough custard.  They actually gave me the wrong kind, but that was due to my fail in speaking Cantonese and so I couldn't accurately describe what I wanted (I wanted the kind with the egg yolk in the middle).  At least both buns were hot when I got them, as they'd been sitting in the steamer.

The egg tart and minced meat pie were SO good - exactly what I was expecting them to taste like in my mind.  The sticky rice (like mochi) on the outside of the meat pie was slightly sweet and greasy (hey, it's cheap Chinese food), and the meat inside was savory and perfectly complemented the outside.  I didn't mind that, like the buns, there seemed to be more outside covering than inside filling, because I really like the sticky outside.  I could tell the egg tart probably wasn't as fresh, since the crust wasn't perfectly flaky, but the flavor was still there.  Still delicious.

This place has a ton of other stuff that isn't limited to dim sum (noodles, won ton soup, etc.).  There are just a few seats inside, so it's clearly a take-out place.  I had to ask the lady to repeat stuff several times because I didn't really understand her Cantonese, so she tried to tell me that my Cantonese WAS good and I was such a smart girl for understanding it even though I was born in the United States.

CCG takes another cash-only one for the team.

Happy Chinese New Year!  I was in the mood for some takeout dim sum but most shops in Chinatown have Chinese only signs.  I peeked inside New Fortune (very close to the Stockton Tunnel).  Their baked items looked nice and golden.  The signs were in English and Chinese.  They even translate the items to English equivalents, e.g., bao = bun.  How thoughtful.  I didn't have any problems ordering in English.  I can speak a bit of Chinese but I certainly can't read Chinese.

They have dim sum (3 for $1.20), won ton noodle soup, Chinese rice tamales, steamed buns, baked buns, egg custard tarts, rice rolls, etc.

    * Chicken bun (50 cents): On the small side but it's only 50 cents, so I can't complain.  Good dough that's not too dense, but perhaps a bit too chewy.  Delicious, juicy filling - ground chicken, scallions, mushrooms - tastes like it would be good in a dumpling.  Served hot.
    * Chinese red bean pancakes - Lots of red bean filling, chewy, sweet glutinous rice, thicker and smaller than usual.  Not greasy.

Like most takeout dim sum shops, it's small but they do have a few tables.  A couple of regulars (Chinese seniors) were sitting and enjoying lunch (a good sign).  It also looked cleaner and not as old and dark as some of the other dim sum shops in the area.  But it's just as cheap!

    Cash only of course.

Since when is dimsum $1.50 for 3 pieces??? Aren't most places $1.20??? I had no time to argue since I spotted my bus outside.

    I had the:
-Siu Mai (pork dumpling) - chewy with fresh pork flavor. huge piece and very meaty. not bad.
-Ha Gow (shrimp dumpling) - a sack filled with oil and grease. made me feel so sick after eating it.

$3 total is still cheap. But if you think about it, at $1.20 for 3, it should come out to $2.40! Thats a 20% overcharge!!

I'm sad because I have to change my review of New Fortune.  After eating there a couple of times a month for the past few years, I've taken it off the lunch rotation.  For the last several times I've gotten dim sum at New Fortune, I have come down with a crushing MSG headache and terrible thirst after consuming my tasty treats.

I'm on to the next dim sum stop.

    Bye-bye, New Fortune!

I like this place. My friend took me here insisting this was the "real Chinatown." While waiting to order, you can peek into their kitchen and watch them make some of the dim sum.

There's plenty of dim sum to choose from, and it made for some nice snacking while walking through downtown.

Only thing is, almost NONE of it is warm and has been sitting around for a while. Cold dumplings just aren't as good, especially if they've been previously fried.

I have finally found my dim sum spot in Chinatown!

After trying out several spots, I was about to give up... then one day, I drove past this shop while on my way through the Stockton tunnel. I bookmarked it in my head right away.

I walked in the next morning and was greeted by a friendly woman. I ordered the onion bun, the pot stickers, an order of eggrolls and an egg tart. Less than $5 - awesome and it filled me up for breakfast, lunch and a light snack. Sad to say, I was not impressed by the pot stickers.... but I don't give up that easily. I knew there was some goodness in this shop because their onion buns ARE AMAZING!!! Soft, sweet, savory, melts in your mouth... =)****

I went back for more onion buns the next day at lunch time. I also got their taro cake, the peanut and sugar dessert (don't know the proper name) and an order of chow mein. This total was less than $4. The chow mein wasn't spectacular but it did the job. And it was only $1.50 for a small take-out box. The taro cake is just like how my mom used to make them =) The peanut and sugar dessert was a little sweet in the center but the outside was gorgeously glutinous! And the onion buns... again... AMAZING!!!

I had lunch here everyday last week. That's how dedicated I've become. Or addicted. AND, it's farther away from work than all the other dim shop stores. I am a lazy person but for this shop, I'd go the extra mile.

The women are super nice, helpful and humble. When I told them their onion buns were amazing, they just smiled and said, "Ohhh thank youuu... what else do you want?"

I love this place! Everything is so cheap and good! And I just discovered I can order sizzling hot, off the stove, wonton mien. Yum! And I love their rice with different varieties of meat. Their dim sums are not bad either! You can see exactly how the food is made because you can just peek into their kitchen. A nice little Chinatown dim sum spot.

Right off the bus line, you find this little Chinese bakery with dim sum.  The lady there was nice enough to listen to my super broken mixed Mandarin and Cantonese and we communicated.

We absolutely loved the bread with corn and ham and mayonnaise. We got 4 of them today at 80 cents each. Word.

Small shaomai (is that how you spell it?), 6 of them and 2 of those breads and a bottle of water was $5 even. Fed both of us. Word.

I will mos def have to brush up on my Chinese. More Chinese I learn, more Spanish I lose, and the other way around. I have to master both.

Imma a fan of this place. Dirt Cheap Won-ton Noddle soup, and shreded pork with pickle over noddles. For $3.25.
Today i had the won-ton noddle soup, noddle was not as bouncy as some restraunts make it, but there were 7 won-tons. Also, I had this meat/shrimp cake wrapped in egg.. YUM! Best ever! Reminds me of the friend cakes I had in China.
This place is actually pricery than most dim sum places in chinatown, but can't blame them. Rent is probably expensive being right behind a busy bus stop.
Overall, Really good hole in the wall...consider it!

    Dammit another five star review!

Here is why new fortune gets my five stars:

#1. They have great Siu-mai, 2 shrimp in each and 3 for $1.20? Whaaat?

#2. Tight seating means you might eat your meal with 2 strangers sharing the Sambal oelek and soy sauce.

#3. You can see the kitchen where they make the goodness you will eat. If you are really lucky the mama will hook you up with the super fresh fried egg roll. She doesn't even mind if you ask about technique, free lessons (just wash your hands).

#4. The people who work here are really sweet, they have many regulars, including me.

#5. You will be full for under four dollars, and you will have a variety of things to eat.

Also the medicine shop next door has the cheapest panax Ginseng in all of Chinatown. Check it out.

The current go-to place when I'm with my expense-conscious mother as part of our weekly shopping/exercise trip to Chinatown.  The place has a wide variety of dim sum, fresh made noodle soups and baked goods, all for very cheap.  It's not often that you'll find a heaping bowl of rice noodle soup with chunks of pork and generous portion of fresh choy sum for $3.50!  As I mentioned earlier, we've eaten here a good number of times at this point.  The food is a-ok, as my Yelp rating indicates. But if money is tight and you are hungry, you can have something warm and filling for less than a buck.  The 2 women running the place are also friendly, something of an anomaly for this type of place in this neighborhood.

I come here to buy their BBQ bake pork bun it is big and cost only .80.  i like there pork and beef sui mai and their shrimp dumping.  There sui mai are big.  There can microwave the food for you if you think it is too cold.  This place is cheap.  The best time to get here i in the morning and the worst is 30 min before they close a 0700pm because they run out of dim sum that are popular and is cold.

So glad we decided to walk to the end of Stockton before the tunnel to check out this dim sum place. I admit I was not convinced while looking from the outside but somehow hubby and I decided to go inside and give them a try.

They have a full Chinese and English menu on the wall - I studied that as well as the display case.  I noticed a dark gray colored dough like pastry and asked what it was - I think the man said "lai" as in soil in Cantonese...ok, that doesn't sound very appetizing.  He said it's traditional "toi san" pastry and nobody else makes it but them and that we should try since it's only $0.50/piece.  Hubby thinks he had it before but he doesn't recognize the name.

While we debated if we wanted to try that, we ordered a piece each of the shrimp dumpling, beef siu mai, pork siu mai and chiu chow fun gor at $0.50/each.  All was pretty good, I liked the beef siu mai the best.  Their chiu chow fun gor has the key ingredients - peanuts and preserved radish.  The shrimp dumpling was pretty good - plenty shrimp and bamboo shoots.  Hubby liked everything and did order a piece of the "lai".  I took the first bite and was impressed.  We had expected to be a chewy doughy piece but there's actually filling - tasty sweet filling of peanut and coconut.  The man told us the herb used to make the chewy dough comes from China.  He was very nice and thought we were tourist but we told him we are locals but never made it to this end of Stockton street.  This tasty treat was so good, we bought 2 to-go.  We did try one more item - the sticy rice bun - basically sticky rice in very thin wrapper steamed into a ball.  For $0.60, this was big and tasty especially with a sprinkle of white pepper.

The place is a hole in the wall with 3 small tables and 6 chairs.  You can see the ladies making dim sum and dough to the left as you enter the shop.  Besides dim sum, they also serve baked buns, rice plates and soup noodles.

We will have to come back to get the "lai" pastry for our families to try and check out their other treats.

Came here a couple of times to this hole-in-the-wall for quick take-out brunches while staying at the Incontinental Mark Hopkins on Nob Hill.  Both times we came pretty early in the day (probably between 9:30 and 10:30am), so we got the really fresh stuff coming out of the kitchen and onto the huge bamboo steamers.  For the price you pay, you get some really good-sized and tasty dim sum.  Let's see, $0.50 per shu mai and har gows, $1.50 per steam rib, and $2.00 per har cheong fun.  Can't beat those prices especially for someone coming all the way from Washington DC where the Chinatown is a joke (2 blocks only)!  As I said, the shu mai and har gow were very big and well filled with meats and shrimps.  The ribs were spectacular, so good that we went ahead and drank the broth after finishing the ribs. Compared to the dim sums that I usually go to back in Maryland, these were definitely not overly salty nor oily at all.

By the way, the owner/old lady in the shop was the nicest and sweetest lady ever.  She was extremely accommodating to me with my horrible Mandarin/Cantonese skills and my wife's English only attempts.  For about $6.00 total, we both walked away nice and full.  We'll definitely come back next time back in SF.  Yum!

Slightly better than You's up the street.  I had a barbecue pork bun, a couple shrimp dumplings, a couple pork dumplings, and a fried sesame-paste ball.  Everything was fresh -- no stale bun or slimy dumplings.  The menu board is in English (unlike You's), and the guy behind the counter was reasonably helpful.  My entire lunch was $2.50 -- can't beat the price!  The only negative for me is that there were no vegetable dumplings.

Located right inside of Chinatown, this Dim Sum place is a walkable distance from Union Square.  Being able to stock up on various rolls and dumplings and only shelling out $5 was great!  I especially liked the desserts, namely the egg custard thing and the sesame ball.  Luckily, I went with a friend who speaks some Chinese---the gentleman behind the counter didn't speak a lick of English.  We sat and ate at this establishment, which meant eating out of the plastic bags the Dim Sum came in... not exactly the easiest thing to do.  As with most Chinese places in this genre, it wasn't the cleanest or most sophisticated setting, but its cheap, good, and gets the job done.

I went with three grown boys to this restaurant and by the time we were full and paid for all of our food, the bill came out to $12.55.  The food was really good and it didn't even matter that the people there didn't speak english.  I'm giving it four stars instead of five because it seems like the type of restaurant that uses a lot of MSG.  I'm not planning on going to SF to eat dim sum every weekend, so I don't think death or brain damage is in the cards if you go to a restaurant like this once every blue moon.

Well I am glad that other people had a good experience with this place.  I for one had a really bad experience.  This morning after arriving into the city, I was feeling kinda hungry.  Since my sister and I parked acrossed the street, I figured I go here to get some dim sum.  I bought an order of ha gow, siu mai, and a lor mai gai.  The ha gow and siu mai were okay.  When I got to the lor mai gai, I took a couple of bites and realized that it tasted kinda sour.  I smelled it and there was indeed a sour smell; almost like sushi rice...but I wasn't having sushi.  I had my mom and brother smell it, and they too agreed that it smelled sour.  Well, I didn't want to pursue anything, but my brother and mother insisted on informing the workers there.  My brother when up there and explained the situation.  I mean, come on, for a $1.70, it wasn't worth getting my money back.  We just wanted to inform them that they should check their items.  The worker then went off on my brother saying that I could've bought it some place else and wanted to just blame them.  I mean, come on, for that chump change?  We just wanted to let them know that they should just be more careful; we weren't asking for a refund or anything.  I will never go here again.  For those of you that have had a good experience then more power to you; I am just stating what happened with my experience.  If people were to ask me, I would recommend shying away from this place.
