I've never tried homemade pho before (which I hear is BOMB), but I think the pho and other food here is consistently good.

Thus, I never stray too far from my usual choices:
- pho satay or sate ... mix in the dollop of satay sauce and your pho instantly becomes so flavorful and spicy, your sinuses will clear up
- crunchy (though very greasy) egg rolls
- a delicious, cold strawberry shake sans boba for just $3

I'm a happy camper after every meal at DK.

This isn't a quick shower
sloppy paint on a cracking wall
this is I just got back from a week long retreat and I'm looking good, feeling good and ready to have at it.
Dishes are the strong Vietnamese classics that they had before with a revamped menu that has some good new options.  There's the options of standard pho tai or you can rock pho sate and the menu has been tightened up to make for less flipping and more deciding.
Rock a bubble tea with your meal and you'll be getting one of the better ones around.
My choice Taro shake
nice bit of cold to it firm boba and smooth consistency.

Bubble tea review. I came with Sara who is a big fan of the bubble tea. Her mango version was fantastic. I saw a flavor called "Michael Jackson", which didn't sound anything like the fruits, taros and berry flavors. So being the curious person I am, I decided to try it out.

The tea would of been better if it wasn't overloaded with the square jelly bubbles. It must of been filled 3/4 the way up cause every sip had a huge slew of them. A few sips had finished the milk and only left the bubbles. I wanted to drink more of the tea but it was gone too fast. I wonder why they named it Michael Jackson? It was white milk with black bubbles? Hmmm. Either way, good for them for paying tribute to a great star.

I would go back to try the other flavors. For now I'm giving this place an OK.

Aight DK, you got me.

I came once when it was a shack and lame on the inside full of punk ass wanna be asian gangsters. BUT ohh shiiiiz now its newww and its even in the name NEW DK.

Strolling out of the SATs and starving we moseyed on down to Chinatown and decided to get pho. They really amped up the place. New tables chairs and set up but just aesthetics. Newer looking but still same old DK. The dishes are also much better than the generic plastic stuff from other cheap Viet restaurants. Not something I usually notice but the dishes are in fact better looking.

Meals in itself are decent. I had Bun Thap Cam and my friends got pho and com thit nuong. it all looked good but the com looked a little insufficient in the garnish and plate filling department but good none the less. My bun was decent but i didnt really like some of the meats they had in there. Shoulda got pho. Cheap around 6-8 a dish, mine was 13 cuz...i really dont know.

Bubble tea, probably number two to lollicup. I got taro, friend got thai iced tea and Sour sop. all good. like 3 each

Overall, good revamp of the old "asian gangster" ridden place. i think ill stop by again

I went to the New Dong the other night before going to the movies to grab something quick to eat.  I planned on getting a bubble tea and something small, but when I got there it was a little busy and a little later than I expected.  I hadn't been to the New Dong since they reopened, but was pleasantly surprised by the new decor and brightly lit space.  It was no longer dark, a little dirty, and the scary fish tank was no longer a focal point (although it is still in there just not as noticeable).

I only ordered a green apple boba.  The price was affordable at $3.50, maybe a little more than some other places, but still not outrageous.  The boba was delicious, one of the best I have had.  I am craving it now as I write this and hope to stop there after work.  I need to get some food from there so I can fully experience the New Dong Khanh.

I didn't even recognize this place when my friend told me I'd been here before.  Very much enjoyed the new seating and look!

The seafood chowfoon was amazing, especially when asking for it to be extra spicy.  I wish they had more squid and shrimp in it, rather than the fake crab meat and fish balls :(  My friends got pho, and loved it.. The bubble tea was amazing!

My sister, who has very mediocre tastes, recommended this place so I was pretty skeptical. Once I tried a sample of their pomegranate frozen yogurt, I had to give my sister's usually sub-par taste buds a break.

The pomegranate frozen yogurt is faint pink color, and really doesn't taste much like pomegranate. If it were a little more bitter, it would have been right. Overall, the taste was still pleasant and very similar to regular frozen yogurt.

I trucked over to this place with my sister to get bubble tea. She ordered a mango and papaya bubble tea (you may proceed to vomit now). It was overly sweet and pretty artificial. My green tea bubble tea on the other hand was sweet, slightly bitter and a bit creamy. I would definitely come back for more.

Oh yeah, and if you look carefully you'll notice that one of their drinks is called the, "Michael Jackson." I'll definitely have to try that one next time. The woman told me it was made with black jelly and soy milk (and maybe coconut milk?).

Another notch on my pho belt, New Dong has just earned a spot in the rotation of Vietnamese noodle adventures I embark on every almost Thursday.

Alongside the solid choices for Boston-area pho such as Xinh Xinh, Pho Thien Thien, Pho Hoa, Le's Restaurant and Pho Viets, New Dong serves up a mean bowl of slurp-worthy noodles, piled high with crisp veggies, always leaving you full of warm-belly happiness. They are extremely conscious of those with food allergies, and went above and beyond to ensure no items of the peanut persuasion came anywhere near my friend's dish.

The rush at lunch is the typical city mayhem of waiting and slow service, and they do not take reservations or accept credit cards! In a rush, or sans cash, the Dang gets the pass from me. But with a little advanced planning, I'd gladly sit down in their dining for a big bowl of soup!

Steven F. and I went to the Dong (don't you just love saying that?) so I could finally, finally, finally try bubble tea. A bunch of friends have been seemingly seduced by the stuff, and I was very excited to hop on the bubble tea bandwagon.

The Dong has just recently been renovated, and you can easily tell that it's been improved. Everything is well-lit and inviting. You walk in, and there's a huge fish tank with prehistoric-looking fish to your right and a bubble tea station to your left. Lots of colorful signs, noises, and laughter.

They have every kind of flavor you could imagine for tea, but I played it safe and tried the strawberry. It was everything I wanted and MORE. It basically tastes like a slushy, and the tapioca balls took a half-second to get used to, but I eventually fell in love!

Then came the food. I got the Seafood Pho, which consisted of octopus (tentacles and all, people), shrimp, some kind of white fish, and chicken. FANTASTIC. Some of the best pho I've had in Boston.

Overall, my entire meal cost $12.00 with tip! If that doesn't make you want to check out The Dong (and the name doesn't do anything for you either) then I just can't help you. The only thing that really bugged me was how loud the tea-making machine was. It sounded like somebody had dropped a chainsaw in a blender, making it difficult to hear what the lovely and always captivating Steve F. was saying. But other than that, I'm can't wait for my next visit to the land of the Dong.

A friendly, bright, little place with serious spunk and a menu that will not disappoint.   There's plenty of Vietnamese restaurants in the area to choose from, and it's clear that New Dong Khanh works quite hard to set themselves apart from the others by trying new things with their menu, and backing it all up with quality food at excellent prices.     They really know their bubble teas, so much that they have a designated area for only that and yes, there will always be a long line!

The crowds are not fun (as one would not normally describe a crowd as a good time) but the constant swarms of people is a good indication that there's something fantastic to partake in and that it's probably worth the wait.   And believe me, it is.

Whoah now, they did a little remodeling and got all fancy-schmatzy.  Instead of a white board, a flat-screen TV now announces the drink flavors.  OK, progress is good, but they TOOK MY FAVORITE DISH OFF OF THE MENU.  Lame...

Solid 4 stars.  Tried the avocado boba - I still like Rainbow Cafe's better, but this is definitely a close second.  Great, fresh taste.  I even got the tapioca balls, which I never do, and they were softer and tastier than the ones that turned me off of them in the first place.  Still, Rainbow Cafe's was a bit sweeter, and a bit thicker.

Also tried the lemongrass chicken.  It was decent, though nothing particularly special.  No knife in my to-go bag either made it hard to cut/eat.  Definitely would go back again sometime to try other items on the menu, like their pho.

Probably the best place to get Bubble Tea! Plus they're looking pretty snazzy with their new renovations!

Quality food without breaking your budget! And the service is fast too! Great place to experience Vietnamese cuisine.

Be sure to try the Honeydew bubble tea! It has become my favorite recently, haha.

Dong Khanh is back in business after their renovation!

We stopped by for a late lunch and was caught off guard with the new decor.  The light was a dizzying blue (seriously, are you really making this hole in the wall.... TRENDY?!)

There were no renovation done to the kitchen, the door way, and the dining space.  The only thing that change drastically is the drink area for the boba tea craze. I guess them tea heads now have more room to stand around to wait for their tea while us diners had to sit in our tightly corned table as usual.

The food didn't change.  Spring roll was still a tasty delight while alot of things on the menu has been omitted.  Gone are my favorites, the conch salad and the seafood noodle soup in a fishy broth that they usually advertise on the weekend.

This place still is a restaurant so if you're hoping to sit relax and enjoy your tea, please don't.  Head to the park and sit on the bench.  It's not a cafe people, some people like to head here for the food which is still consistent.  Not GREAT but good.

Dong Khanh has been renovated and is now entitled New Dong Khanh.  They're really trying to up their game at this establishment, with more welcoming decor and even swanky plating.

It's no secret that DK has some of the best bubble tea in Boston.  They have some pretty damn good pho too.  The downside is the overwhelming swarms of high schoolers that crowd the front of the restaurant after school has been let out.  Second, it's not the type of place where you can just grab some boba and sit and relax.  They expect you to take your bubble tea to go, or sit and eat.

Thus, when my boyfriend and I decided to see how the renovated restaurant was looking and grab some bubble tea, but also stay and sit, we decided to order a small dish to share while enjoying our tea.  The service was fast and we were pleasantly surprised to see the new plating style.  We both ordered milk tea with bubbles, I ordered mine warm while his was iced.  They serve their milk tea more bitter than I would like; though my boyfriend says he personally likes it that way.  I'll remember to get another flavor next time.

We enjoyed our rice and beef dish.  Though the food was good and affordable, I only wish this was the type of place, where you could sit and simply enjoy tea, without the expectation of ordering food also- especially since they've established themselves as a great place for bubble tea.  It would be nice not to be forced to take it to-go.

Best. Avocado. Shake. EVER.   I've tried some of their other shakes, but this one is my fav.

I'm so happy this place is back open after renovation!  They increased the size of the Bubble tea area (makes sense since it's a huge profit maker for them) AND added blue lights?!   I'm not sure what to make of the new look.

In any case, Dong Khanh is a reliable go to place for me and my guy.  Cheap, fast, tasty, good.

You had boba like a truck truck truck... that dong da-dong dong Dong.

So here's why I don't like you, first before I get all kissy-face on you:

1. You were super rude to Sara S. and I when we tried to order Boba tea and sit down in the restaurant.  It wasn't that full and there are no signs that say we can't do just that, so I was personally offended and that isn't cool and we almost didn't come back.

2. Your front end staff and wait staff and boba tea staff should really try to act more professional and stop hollerin' at each other in front of the customers.  If you gotst drama, take it to the back room!

Now, hey there Boba Dong Khanh, how you doin'?

How do I like thee, let me count the ways, girl.

1.  Your boba balls are super delish.

2.  Your shake drinks are top notch, always super chilly and always flavored just right.

3.  Your drinks actually taste like what they are supposed to be and not like some popsicle of the same flavor blended and poured over tapioca balls.

4.  So what the heck is up with your albino fish?  I guess you told Sara http://S.it wasn't for sale, but I wanna eat you!

5.  Why did you close your doors the other day?  I went for some ultra tasty boba ball tea and you were all boarded up like your albino fish done ate your staff!

Anyway, thanks for the laughs, Dong, I sure hope you are just remodeling your seating and your rude staff and Sara S. and I will be back in a jiffy!

This place is great. I like to go to Xinh Xinh cuz it's not as crowded as DK, but this place is just as good. They have really authentic and rare dishes that are a bit harder to find as well as the more popular ones. On the weekend, they have what I call the "Mama Specials": the things that your mom would make on the weekends if she wasn't so lazy and very determined to wow you. In my family, we always had a Sunday dinner where my mom would slave in the kitchen for hours to make her dishes right. Now that I'm older, I would never want to see my mom working so hard to make a meal for us. Instead, I just go to DK.

Very much like everyone else, the bubble tea is the absolute best here. You can't get anything quite like it anywhere else in Chinatown, I'd say. They use fresh fruit and are really quick and efficient. Their shakes and smoothies are CONSISTENT which is incredibly important in my book. Often times, I'll get bubble tea some place else and it'll be sweet one time and totally bland the next or have tons of fruit one time and be tasteless the next. DK has it down to a SCIENCE and they NEVER mess up. This is the place to go for authentic Vietnamese food, but more importantly, don't pass up the bubble tea.

Careful on the weekends though: lots of high schoolers and Asian people can be found in line trying to get a drink. Don't be afraid to rudely push them to the side and get your drink.
1. You'll never see them again
2. Some of them can't speak English...

My favorite vietnamese restaurant in chinatown.  Their pho is great.  However, I come here for the other vietnamese dishes.  I like banh cuon and banh xeo which i know how to make but are a lot of work in small batches.

The shakes are really good here.  My favorites are jackfruit, mango, and avocado.  The use real fruit for their shakes.  It's not trendy but i kick it old school without bubbles.

This is authentic vietnamese food, like my mama makes it.  keep it real DK

5-stars! Let's face it: you're not gonna find a place that's cheap, delicious, has great service AND is fancy-lookin'. Set your expectations.

This place is cheap, has an expansive menu of authentic Vietnamese food (think banh xeo, com tay cam and stuff that you won't find everywhere), AND... it has the BEST SMOOTHIES EVERRRRRR! I've already been 4 times in the last 7 days! Avocado, Mango, Green Bean, Coconut... they're all delicious!

It's also the only place in the area that serves Banh Cuon! Yum :D Google it. Order it! (Menu #s13-15)

P.S. Beware, this place is loud and still "hole-in-the-wall-ish" despite the renovation, but if you just want something delicious, it's perfect!!

Cash only.

my main reason to go to the new dong khanh is the "Com Ga Nuong Xa Ot" the marinated chicken steak (dark meat) w/ lemongrass rice plate!! (#98 on the menu)
i couldn't find this taste elsewhere!!

the chicken is super juicy and go really well with the white rice and it's delightful to have a small side salad to come along!

only $6.50!!

sometime i made it more fancy and add a side dishes of fried egg roll! w/ an ice coffee! that's my perfect meal!

Finally got a seat here, it's a tough table at lunch.  It reminds more of a NYC or SF place perhaps because it's on Harrison Ave with all that traffic.
It is also slightly dingier inside than the other places I get noodles at. Service is not the strong suit the food is. I had the Bì cuon, pork skin rolls,
Bun Bo Hue, and an iced coffee. The grand total was $12.55.
The rolls (2) were longer and less stout which makes bites easier, they were quite tasty. The soup was spicy  and flavorful on it's on and I didn't add that much chili. There was a neat pile of lemon grass, scallions, on top of another pile of shredded cabbage in the bowl.  Everything was delicious enough to make an effort to come earlier, or later to get a table and bring some other people.

* def makes the noodle rotation
* prices are in line with other Vietnamese places
* sitting near the door sucks since the take out and drink
traffic is a steady stream.
* nobody was rude, but I had to hunt down my coffee as it got lost
on it's way to me.
* non soup offerings looked really good too,

I forget about this place sometimes... but lunch on Sunday brought it back to mind...

Mostly I've come for the avocado shake or some other liquid treat, but this time I actually sat down for food - the pork chop and meatloaf rice plate.  It was good, but even better was the cost, $5.95, I think (before tax/tip).  The portion was a little smaller than I'm used to though since I was able to demolish the entire plate, no sweat.  And I wish this place would start taking credit cards...

Anyhow, I really should come here more often!

Enjoy this place a lot not just because it serves good food but it is also one of the only places around Chinatown that allow pets to go in as long as they are being watched.  The parking is pretty good because there are a lot of parking lots around the restaurant but if you are lucky you can also find a space in the streets.

I FINALLY ate here after going here for a few years and just getting their orgasmic avocado shake.

It is to be noted that they do not have vegetarian broth and even the veggie pho comes in chicken broth.  I am a meat eater, so it was all with me, but if you go with your vegetarian friends, this should be noted.

My pho was good. Not the best I have ever had, but good. I got the seafood pho.  The broth could have been spicer but I had some great seafood chunks in there and a good helping of noodles. I liked the broth, but again, I have had better.  It still gets 4 stars from me because it was very good, and the prices are still pretty cheap.

It is cheaper than Xinh Xinh, and the pho was better.
I paid $5.75 for my good sized bowl, and their shakes are still $2.50.  That can't be beat.

This particular day, my avocado shake had an avocado that wasn't quite ripe, but at least I know that they are using fresh avocados.

Five stars for being searchable by the word DONG.  Yes, I am a 12 year old boy.

Other than that I was disappointed to find they have no veggie broth and that their "vegetarian noodle" soup comes in chicken broth.  Alas, I was left without pho.  Moving on I looked to find something without meat and was left with the lo mein with vegetables.  The dish was VERY good and included grilled vegetables and tofu.  Both had the perfect amount of char and added a smoky touch to an otherwise lightly flavored dish.  It was a bit oily but over all very delicious.  Certainly worth another visit.

On Jessika's recommendation I had my very first avocado shake.  Though the avocado was a bit on the unripe side the shake was yummy, smooth, and only slightly sweet.  I wasn't too sure about the whole ice cream part to begin with but they sold it well.  Their bubbles were also very good, dense yet chewy and without that weird solid bit in the center.  They were a bit heavy handed with them however.  $2.50 - SCORE!

Though I enjoyed my meal I am quite disappointed with the lack of vegetable broth for pho.  YES, I know it's not authentic, but then neither is chicken so suck it.

Well, they just reopened last Thursday. Grabbed lunch there Thursday and Friday, though got Friday's to go. Dong Khanh is the 'low priced' Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown, even lower than Xinh Xinh in general. After reopening, their prices have gone up, but still not by too much. The vermicelli and pho dishes have gone up about $.75, but still less expensive than the competition, $6.75 for an extra large bowl with everything (including meatballs, which was to my surprise) compared to about $8-9 for an equivalent at the competition. The basic bowls are about $5.75. However, the quality is about middling. The richness of the broth is equivalent to Xinh Xinh (that being more salty than tasting like broth). The cuts are very middle of the road, the brisket being fairly gummy, but the tripe was better than the others, being washed and prepped well. The eye rounds, flank, and tendon didn't really stand out. Bean sprouts are uncut but properly rinsed then dried as opposed to thrown on a plate and rinsed on the plate like some other places..., basil a very large portion.

I've always found their vermicelli dishes to be more of a bargain compared to the competition. I'll try any kind, may it be the beef, pork, sugar cane shrimp (which is more like sliced fish cake/balls), and they are each flavorful with fresh fixings, very decent for the price and equivalent to the competition in quality, at $6-$7.25. The rice plates are in the same category as the vermicelli, similar in cost and value. I've particularly liked the lemongrass chicken, being rich in flavor, but it can be... a mess with the curry staining your lips.

For drinks, I haven't liked their mango shakes. They just... have an unusual taste that I just don't like to them when they add the puree. I'll stick to the pineapple coconut or plain milk tea.

Overall, a good place for the budget conscious. The service was a little slow when I was there, but the only servers I saw there was the proprietors and one regular staffer. No other staffers about yet. The new seating seems better, the interiors growing less cheesy (when they first opened in the early 90's, the walls were COVERED with those electronic shifting pictures) with simple cone lamps and grey walls. I think they'll probably have to remove a table on the right side to make seating easier. Doesn't seem physically possible to fit someone there.

Dishes to try: Any vermicelli dish, lemongrass chicken rice plate, pineapple-coconut shake, pearl milk tea.

I like how they renew the place, when I went inside, it felt like you're at the bar or something, but the tables arrangement made it look weird.....anyways, their food were alright, im not a fan, but I usually stop by on the weekend to get the shakes, i love their avocado, and red beans & coconut shakes.

This might be my favorite restaurant in Boston, in fact, one of my favorites ever. I remember when I was growing up my parents would go into Boston every Sunday to get groceries, and we would always come here for lunch. They would always get the pho sate, which is pho with the shaved rare beef slices and the super hot sate sauce (which I've never been able to find anywhere else, so so so depressing). They would spoon little portions into small soup bowls for me and my brother since we couldn't take whole bowls, and their whole bowls are big. But yes, reminescing aside, their pho sate is the best pho that I've ever had. Everytime I come back into Boston I come here to get a bowl of their pho.  I love how the beef comes out rare so you can cook it to your liking, since I like my beef a little on the bloody side it's great for me. The bowls are, as I said earlier, big, and the pho is of pretty good quality. But, if you don't like pho, don't worry, their menu has like 100 items (old DK, don't know if the new menu still does) so you can probably find something that you like.

That being said, Dong Khanh was never known for its service. I mean, you're lucky to even get a few words out of your waiter besides a grunt here or there. But it's always speedy - this place thrives on turning tables quickly. You'll never be waiting for your server, the order is taken appropriately, and the food comes out quickly, and you're in an out in half an hour. But it's what you would expect from a smaller, hole in the wall place. It's certainly very efficient.

Mmmm, and the drinks are worth dreaming about. Their smoothies are a little on the thin side, which is perfect when you get bubbles with them. Their avocado smoothie is really good, as is mostly everything is else. Their bubbles are also a little sweeter than conventional ones I've noticed too. Their milk tea is solid as well, I usually get one at the end of my meals, regardless of season.

Sometimes we rate food on the exotic ingredients on the plate, or how long a chef had to cook it sous vide for. But it's places like Dong Khanh for me, and of course different restaurants for different people, that bring up "reference points", that remind us of our childhood, that always has a sense of familiarity and warmth, and serves quality food that we love and were brought up with, and will likely always enjoy until the day we die.

Good but doesn't pass my muster for Vietnamese: i.e. Pho and spring roles.  Both of these were mediocre that night I ate there.

However, the other fried dishes everyone else was eating looked great.  So maybe I ordered the wrong thing.  Just didn't know.  My suggestion:  visit because all the other reviewers probably aren't wrong, but don't order subtle, lighter food like I did.  Order the stir fried dishes served with rice.   I bet you'll leave happy.  I was the only one who didn't.  (I ate alone and couldn't get a taste of the fried stuff.)

I haven't tried the food here. However, they have some of the best bubble tea in Boston.

They have yummy shakes here. Each are carefully made with real fruit! You can see exactly what the worker is putting in your shake (which can be good and bad aka a huge spoon of sugar!) At $3 each, it's a good snack and good for the summer. Very refreshing. I like the milk tea with boba. It is not overly sweet, but I like it that way.

I've been coming to Dong Khanh for years now.  I really like their rice plates and shakes that're mixed with real fruit which many Yelpers have pointed out.  Their rice plates used to be great value but I went today to find out that the portions have gotten smaller.  Sad to say but that is a sign of the times at many eateries.  Their grilled chicken rice plate is one of my favorites. Dark meat chicken (whole thigh) with lemongrass rub grilled to tastiness.  I also like their porkchop over rice with Vietnamese meatloaf.  But like my buddy said today when we went for lunch, " The porkchop shrank!", referring to the much more generous cuts that they used to serve.

The service here is not emphasized as with most Chinatown spots.  Its mostly sit, order, eat, check, out.  Due to the decreased value I'd have to give this DK a solid two stars ... maybe two and a half on the strength of their drink options.  Still, this place is a Chinatown institution and I hope they stay in business for a long time.

The Pho here is some of the best I've ever had.  The BBQ chicken is ridiculously tasty.  Wash it all down with an avocado shake.  God I wish there were one of these in NY....

I am still hoping for that day when a fight to break out, someone flip a table or whack another guy in the head with a chair. Yes, it has that Hong Kong movie feel. Like a little low-class noodle shop where gangsters eat good food for cheap.

It's noisy, partially because the staff (family own) are so noisy. Not appealing in decor either, but the food is really good. The price is so cheap. I often eat the banh canh cua which is a spicy crab cake udon noodle soup.  It is really yummy. It starts out as a thick spicy sauce but as you eat, the sauce changes. I also like the banh bot chien, which is like fried chunk of dough covered with fried eggs and comes with this really interesting lightly salty and sour soy sauce. They look burnt but that is normal for looks. It's really good. Other spicy dishes here are also really good. Bun Bo Hue, etc. Rice dishes are good too. Filling. Definitely give it a try. I am always eating and waiting for something interesting to happen.
