This past week was just a giant failure in terms of restaurant selections.

Came to New Ashiya with three friends for the $30 all you can eat special (err..debacle).

Apparently when you offer something so spectacular as all you can eat/drink for $30 that entitles your waitress to be extremely rude.

The sushi was truly subpar. I ordered the Philadelphia roll which wasn't bad but the black pepper tuna I also got was all pepper. Also tried the sweet potato tempura roll and was unsatisfied.

Redeeming factors:
-All you can drink Sapporo pitchers and unlimited sake
-Rowdy Danish crowd we discovered who joined us in sake bombs

"Birthday Party to go to tonight... Whooot!
Hmmm.., I'll smell like a bum after I finish this work shift. I know, I'll go home, shower, grab a quick bite, then I'll head out to the party..."  Then a text message came in...

"Dinner tonight, and then we'll head out 2 the bday party:
New Ashiya, 167 1st Ave

Ayce sushi!"

I pondered for a millisecond ("hmmmm! AYCE!"), then I swiftly replied: "I'M IN!"
After changing and showering myself (with cologne), I head to New Ashiya straight from work.

It was noisy in there. Frat-house noisy! (minus 1 star) I can't hear my dinner companions - noisy!!! (minus 2 stars)

The sushi was very good. All the items I got were tasty. I tried the eel, the shrimp tempura, the chicken tempura, the salmon skin, the salmon, the etc... All of it was very good. It was all-you-can-eat sushi for $25. If you spend $5 more, they'll throw in all-you-can-drink Sake.

The ambiance was downright annoying. Entirely obtrusive to my intended 'all I can eat' endeavor.

If you're not slamming back sake bombs like your neighbors, it's just not as fun. One of my dinner companions and I agreed, we need a pitcher of beer to drown out some of this noise.

This place has downgraded.

Went here in May with a friend for the AYCE and drink sushi. For $30, it was a bad deal all the sushi your little heart desires and all the sake and beer you want. That's awesome all the sushi and alcohol you want (or what your tummy can handle :P) There is a variety of sushi from shrimp tempura, salmon skin to sushi nigri.  First time it wasn't too bad, the fish was ok quality, service was alright and the alcohol, well - the beer was a bit warm (fail).

But, went here a few weeks ago again and the quality just went down.  They still served the warm beer (really?! warm beer...BLAH) but the sushi wasn't very good, didnt' taste fresh and the shrimp tempura roll, it tasted like it had been sitting out too long.

In addition, they charge 18% gratuity - really?! Their service is hardly worth 18%. I don't think that as the standard that the first time we went.

Really, this place is not worth it, spend a little extra and go somewhere with good quality sushi.

We went on a Sunday so it was fn dead, but not bad. The "$30"all you can eat really $39 was our lure, I seem to always do these things withpeople visiting. The hot saki was horrible but after enough of it its not bad. No fratty nyu people there on a sunday. Sushi was good overall. But yes the bathrooms were nasty even coming from a dude.

I love this place.
All you can eat and drink for 30 bills??
Great pieces, great rolls, decent watered down booze.

Avoid the bathroom after 10pm unless you enjoy seeing vomit.
Pervert!

What's not to like?
You must take it for what it is...
And I mean once you put all you can drink in front of something you have to know what kind of crowd that will draw... my kind of crowd.

It was just me and one other on a Monday and we got there at about 7:30 so it wasn't crowded, loud or fratastic. Service was fast at first, prompt pitcher and sake. Decent sushi but all you can eat of it...
It got louder and more packed as we left and service got slower...

I did not like that they write their own tips in for CC... I would have given them more, but hey... that's their issue.

Take it or Leave it but take it for what it is and shush.

I would give it 1 star were it not for the copious amounts of semi-decent beer and sake that come for a reasonable price with the ayce dinner.

The issue with this place isn't so much the crowd (you know what you're getting into when you come here, esp. at 9 pm on a friday/saturday), but the food.  The sushi was of very, very questionable quality.

I go to sushi places and look for two things to indicate that the fish probably isn't fresh -- the smell of the place, and the cleanliness of the bathrooms.  My feeling is that if the staff doesn't take the time to clean their bathrooms, they probably aren't taking the time to make sure their kitchens are clean either.

The smell at this place is fishy.  In a very bad way.  And the bathrooms are...disgusting.

I would not be surprised if this place gets shut down for health code violations.  But in the meantime, if you want to get piss-f*cking drunk and don't mind the risk of getting food poisoned, this is a great place. On some level I say to myself that if I'm going to be drinking this much booze, i'll probably be throwing up whatever crappy sushi I ate earlier anyways.  So whatever.

This place has become very scary.

We have been 3 times with groups of friends. All-you-can-eat sushi, timed for 2 hours, is a bit gross, decadent and very Americanized concept, but, we've endured it to see friends who wanted to go and, as my boyfriend pointed out, the first time we went we could have a conversation at our table.  The second time we were there, the beer was served in bottles.

The 2nd time, the writing was truly on the wall.  There was this very boorish jerk, yelling continually at the table next to us. But we thought that was just the odd asshole you run into every once in a while.

The last time we went, saturday, was indeed THE LAST TIME, and the beer came in pitchers.

Forget conversation. This is the place for New Jersey frat guys with gold chains to bring their their big-banged, big-boobed, very drunk  lady-friends in spandex with too much eye makeup.

Stuffing one's face with limitless trays of sushi (not REAL sushi - sushi with cream cheese, sushi with tempura and sweet potato) will be accompanied by drinking, followed by vomiting (possibly IN the restaurant - word has it) followed by groping in the taxi and alcohol-induced snoring.

Notice I didn't say sex. I am not sure normal people would want to have sex after spending the evening in this ambiance and I'm not sure that the men who create the ambiance would be capable of getting it up in the first place.

There's an oddly (very uncomfortable) colonialist flavor to the place. It almost feels like an American military bar in Japan would feel like in 1945 - crashes and booms every five seconds as hearty men fall off their chairs or slam shots of saki or leer at the skinny, stone-faced Asian girls, bearing plates of sushi and saki.  Their faces fuming with rebellion, the waitresses flit  delicately around groups of howling, brawling Jersey Shore transplants.

This is where the worst of the Jersey shore goes, come winter.

My heart goes out to the staff. And we hope that they noticed how we said 'thank you" and 'please" and respected that they too were human beings, unlike the majority of the customers. And we hope that the place brings in enough money each night to justify the total shithole that its shameless customers have made it.  There's an awful sense of almost prostitution here - a sacrifice of pride for money.

This absolutely ruined our weekend.

But hey if this sounds AMAZING to you and $30 sounds right, go for it. (BTW to tightwads it's not THAT cheap. A sushi entree of reasonable size is about $15-20 at a quiet, self-respecting Japanese restaurant.)

Ok, so I made a mistake. I went here and said im not going to drink here as I am going to a birthday party afterwards.

There is no reason to come to this place and NOT drink. $30. AYCE AYCD.

This is not a place to be sober in.

There was a full on frat party happening in the restaurant. There was a party of about 40 people doing Sake-Bomb waves. Do you know what the sound of 40 drunk people people yelling and hitting the table for sake bombs sounds like? Me, Joolz, Tony, Janeen B and one other person whos name escapes me do. Damn that was loud.

Ok, so I digress, I will definitely come back, sushi was decent for AYCE, next time though, I will not be stupid, drop the extra $5 and drink drink drink.

For about a minute and a half I felt like I had literally walked into a frat party on a college campus.

The place was packed- and everyone was SCREAMING. I was far too sober for such an event.

I was also too sober to enjoy the dry volcano roll I ordered, though for $6, it can almost be forgiven.

Not entirely though- the people next to us were so hammered at 8:30, the the poor waitress ended up being entirely consumed by their demands. That said, our table suffered the consequences- forgotten orders, mistakes on the drink orders- it was a less than stellar experience. I'd rather pay a few dollars more for better sushi, and a place where I can actually hear myself think.

GREAT sushi, lots of fun too! All you can eat deal is totally worth it too. The waitresses are on top of getting you the food and drinks quickly so you get your 2 Hrs worth. The waitress even let us pay with separate cards for some of us that didnt have cash on us.

You can order anything on the menu for the all you can eat deal. the sushi is pretty good quality too, I was expecting it to be a little sketchy but it was all fresh and delicious.

If your looking for a fancy, quiet sushi place I'd suggest looking elsewhere. It gets kind of rowdy in here on the weekends.

I'll DEFINITELY go back here again soon.

Thanks New Ashiya for a fun night!

Oh My God.  This place is a hot mess!!!  I have been here two times,  both on a busy Saturday night.  30 bucks all you can eat/drink.  The rolls are actually decent for the price, they offer a lot of different rolls, not just the standard (i.e.; tuna rolls).  All you can drink Saki bombs is just trouble!  I've witnessed multiple people being carried out and it's f'n hilarious.  The decor is not so clean - dirty floors/bathrooms.    New Ashiya is reminiscent of an obnoxious frat party.  Have a few saki bombs and this place gets better and better as the night goes on.  Great place to go before a night out on the town w/ a group of people (3.5 stars)

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place!   Anyway, here it goes.  My friend Lisa discovered this place and therefore I owe so much to her.  I've eaten here for my birthday and for dinners.  If you are going to come Thurs, Fri, Sat evenings make a reservation.  The all you can eat special is fantastic and the quality of their rolls are superb.  It's 25$

The only thing I don't like is that in large parties, everyone has to order the all you can eat sushi.  If not, nobody can order it.   Boo.

Shocked that I haven't written a review yet but it feels necessary now as I try to recover from a severe hangover brought on by their $30 all you can eat and drink special.

In fact, I've never gone here and NOT had the AYCD special...so take that into consideration when choosing whether or not to follow my usually sage advice.

The sushi here is actually not bad, it's even pretty good. The Dragon Roll and Spider rolls, both good. The rest starts to get fuzzy but the menu of options is pretty stellar. The hot sake and the pitchers of beer will have you at hello. And the bathroom waiting area wreaks of fish. In terms of service, it's pretty good and they're relatively fast for a place that times you 2 hours from when you sit down and start drinking and cuts you off when the buzzer goes off. We actually got into a small fight with our waitress about timing when she attempted to cut us off 15 minutes early and she backed off. This is all par for the course.

Ok, now I'm gonna go lie down.

OK, despite my previous experience, I went back to New Ashiya and tried the $30 all you can drink sake/beer and eat sushi because I mean, it's all you can drink and eat so why wouldn't I?

To start, they were SUPER accommodating with our crazy reservation changes of canceling and then adding people. They also brought the drinks out right away and certainly do not skimp. A large hot sake bottle for each of us and two big pitchers and they keep em coming. The menu is legit. A WIDE selection of maki and specialty rolls though you do get charged for pieces you don't eat so keep that in mind. Annnd, how was the sushi this time around? Good! So I guess it's true that places can occasionally have an off night. Though it's never advisable to have an off night when you serve raw fish, just sayin.

Also important to note: as soon as you sit down your 2 hour window starts. At the end of it you will promptly be handed the check and they will start cleaning up. Which in all honesty, it's been 2 hours of binge drinking and eating, you really should get out of there. And if you're like us that means going to a roofdeck with a 12 pack of PBR and a few bottles of the fizzy stuff because that's how we ROLL!

And then you get the hiccups and really regret that decision but that's a review for another time and place.

Conclusion:
-DON'T order delivery
-DO get a group together, drink and get rowdy. Because not only do they allow it, but they ENCOURAGE it (I think)

Very interesting experience.  A friend raved about the place for the price and atmosphere.

First off, if you're looking for a quiet place to eat to take your boo, don't even bother.  It's loud, full of huge groups of drunk, hungry kids slamming saki bombs next to their all-you-can-eat sushi orders.  And that's exactly what makes it great.

It's a new concept to me and in the context of a birthday celebration with a large group over dinner, it was a lot of fun.

What happened to New Ashiya?

We went a few weeks ago on a Friday and discovered that it had turned from decent affordable sushi to an alcohol soaked sushi orgy with so-so sushi and a loud, raucous crowd.  That may be fine if that's what you want, but we were hoping for a nice quiet night out.

So we decided we'd order from there only.  We ordered tonight, through their website.  Put in our credit card info, then a few minutes later received a confirmation.  The food was taking a long time, so we called to check on it.  Turns out they claim to have never received the order, despite our confirmation.

It's just not worth it any more, no matter how affordable they are.

The vivacious Monica R. and I had our first-ever friend date here. "WE ARE GETTING THE $30 ALL YOU CAN EAT AND DRINK DEAL" she announced, but the waitress handed us three different menus before giving us the right one, and slammed down our water glasses so hard I nearly squealed. The special includes the specialty rolls (usually $12.50 or so), standard rolls, and either beer, wine, or sake. The rolls are quite large, so you really only need to order three to be satisfied. The Dragon and Lover rolls were outta control; I'd skip the Black Pepper Tuna.

"Please, do not waste food" said the menu. "Umm I will do as I please" said Kat. And yeah, I ordered two rolls too many. Shame, shame, shame.

Also, the waitresses more than redeemed themselves when The Skinniest Guido Alive sat himself at our table and asked if we "wanted to party." I was on my fourth glass of wine, so of course I just laughed hysterically and Monica asked him what exactly did he mean by that and he just kept babbling and then SWOOOOSH a swarm of tiny waitresses with bobbed hairdos descended and practically threw him to the floor: "Is this your friend?! Is he from other table?!" We shook our heads and then nodded and BAM he was kicked back to the New Jersey side of the restaurant aka the back room, where all the "SAKE BOMB" screaming had been coming from. Nice!

Coming off of a two week binge of overconsumption in Europe [read: in euros], I am relegated to very budget dining, which is not such a miserable fate in New York, what with the plethora of cheap good eats. Unfortunately, cheap sushi restaurants are so hit and miss -- mostly misses. Even sadder still, I am always craving sushi.

I see that most of the positive reviews are for its ayce deal with sushi and sake. I hate to be persnickety, but a deal is a deal if you get more, qualitywise, than you pay for. And I just can't fathom that to be the case here. I didn't order the $30 deal, because, sadly, even that's out of my range. Instead, I opted for a salmon dinner of a salmon roll and 7 pieces of salmon sushi for $11 and two pieces of white tuna sashimi for $3. The cut of the salmon for the sushi was sloppy and wrong. Way too long and thin over too much rice. Plus, the salmon was a little warmer than I would've liked. The sashimi was cut ok, but the white tuna as definitely less than fresh. This shouldn't be happening during a busy Friday night.

I'd probably stick to the rolls only, in which case, why not just pick up a box of "sushi" at the supermarket?

I started going to this place in 2006, and whenever I'm in the Village and want Sashimi or Sushi, this is my go to place.  Ashiya's decor is really nice, with a large, wide open spot.  The restaurant is mostly tables, but there are some nice, comfortable booths in the back.  The rear has a room you can reserve with sliding doors for private parties.  The tables have a nice design with translucent plastic that gives it a modern feel amongst all the wood and traditional looking decor.

My primary dish here is the "Sashimi regular" which offers fifteen pieces of sashimi, soup (or salad) and rice.  It's a fantastic deal for about $13 (as of a couple months ago at least).  The staff is nice and will let you leave out certain types of fish to substitute others (I sometimes cut out salmon because of the calories involved).  I've also had their dragon roll among others.  I also love their spicy tuna roll, yum!

The staff is extremely friendly and efficient.  I enjoy watching the sushi chefs work as they create rolls, especially those on the big sushi boats!  The only warning I have is that on Friday and Saturday nights, this place becomes piled on high with drunk students, and they can get pretty obnoxious.  I tend to go during quieter days and during those times it's really nice.

Recommended for well priced, good tasting and fresh food presented with good service.

As it has been mentioned before, this place is known for its all you can eat and drink (saki), which will run you $30 (but with tax and tip is $40).  You can elect not to get the saki and just do the all you can eat sushi for $25.  From the time you arrive you are given 2 hours to enjoy the all you can eat special.

Typically when you hear all you can eat you'd imagine the quality of the food to be sub-par but the sushi at Ashiya is actually decent.  There are more than enough rolls to choose from while enjoying the all you can eat menu.

It seems that this place is cracking down on the rowdiness they allow their customers to exhibit, as we arrived at  7PM and by 8:20 PM they came over with our bill trying to get us to leave, which didn't happen as we blamed the other tables around us for causing the noise.

If you plan on bringing a decent amount of people (6+) I'd say call earlier in the week and request seating in the back of the restaurant.  Definitely a place worth going to if you have friends in town, $40 for dinner and drinks is a bargain, especially in the city.

If you are looking for a nice quiet and laid back atmosphere to have dinner at especially on Friday & Saturday night I would highly recommend another restaurant for dinner.

For some reason last time we were there the place had a really really bad odor to, and I'm not quite sure what was the cause behind this.

I came with a friend on a Wednesday night around 7pm (wasn't too many people there) for its famous all you can eat sushi and all you can drink sake/wine/beer for $30. Let me give you a tip to get your money's worth, don't fill yourself up on the beer! Save some space for the sushi! The restaurant definately allows us to do sake bombs and brought out the sake and beer immediately after placing our orders so we don't waste any time while we waited for the sushi to be made.

Service was quick, but then again it was a Wednesday night with only half the restaurant filled. Sushi came out really quickly, six rolls for two people took them 15-20 minutes to make and best of all, there is a HUGE variety to choose from, including my favorite - Spider rolls! The rolls also don't pack on too much rice, it's just a thin layer, which I found surprising since I thought it'd be the other way around with a thick layer of rice and small portions of filling at a sushi buffet. The only downside, and the reason why they lost a star, is because some of the fish I got wasn't that fresh. The yellowtail and salmon was mushy and slightly warm, so I kept my orders to spicy tuna, tempura or spider rolls.

By the end of our 2 hour time limit, the $30 all you can eat and drink special ended up being $38/person after 18% tip and tax.

The only purpose this place serves is to get trashed with a large group of people, and eat some mediocre sushi. I arrived an hour late, so I'm not 100% sure what the alcohol situation is, I just threw down some cash, but pitchers of beer and sake were flowing freely.

Also, this place was PACKED with just out of college folk here for precisely the same reason we were- to get trashed for cheap.

Overall meh, but does it's job.

I guess it's a good deal if you don't mind mediocre sushi and loud guys with large medallions sharing the tight space that is Ashiya. Otherwise, I wasn't impressed. The fish didn't taste fresh...there was something not so right about one of my rolls.

Not the worst restaurant I've been to, but certainly not a place to go if you actually want to ENJOY sushi.

If you're loud, lewd, bawdy and barely legal -go there NOW! All you can  eat and drink for a mere $30.00.

I must admit  the sushi  and rolls were decent... exceeding my expectations. Mudd butt inducing old fish it is not.

I found this place on Yelp when looking for an all you can eat sushi joint. The place is meh, but would be a lot more fun with a big group. The place has huge tables to accommodate everyone and with the price you cant beat it. The food is a 3, but the price is a 5. They have great deals with All you can eat sushi for $25 bucks and for $5 more bucks you can include all you can drink. They are smart for stuffing the sushi with cucumbers and with little fish. Honestly, I just stuff as much rice as I can in a napkin and make a couple trips to the restroom to dispose of it. Not a bad place to eat a drink all you want for 30 bucks,  Check it out!

I view all you can eat deals as something of a challenge from a restaurant. "You think you can outbeat me?"

.. honestly, they have no idea who they are dealing with. It's a little like Homer Simpson over here.

I sit between 3 and 4 stars on my review of Ashiya.

My dining partner and I went for the $30 special that you would have read about in reviews gone by. And what a steal $30 for all you can eat and/or drink in the space of 2 hours.

Other AYCE sushi expeds that i have gone on have been less than adequate. Typically there is a set of specific rolls you are allowed and no more. Ashiya suprised me in that the array of rolls available at the all you can eat price was really pretty amazing: plenty of a la carte, plenty of the standard rolls not to mention the special rolls. Holy crap... some of those were pretty good...not great mind you.. but pretty good.

The wine/sake were average at best... but hey, free is free: eat and drink all you can till it hurts... then eat some more..  cause its a competition remember... EVERYTHING is a competition.

The final bill came to 65 bucks with tax and then another 10 for tip... so 75 bucks for two. It's not exactly the dirt cheap option.. but it's sushi so bring it on.

I don't think there's anything more to really add from the previous reviews regarding the food... decent portions and very tasty.  $25 all you can eat (2 hr limit)

BUT for an extra 5 bucks, you can drink all the beer, sake and wine that you want as well which is something I definitely suggest. The all you can drink is probably what keeps this place so busy. It's mostly a college crowd so that means everyone is doing sake bombs there so if you're into that then this is the place for you (every few mins you'll hear "ready? 1... 2... 3!" *slam on table* someone says "omg this is so messy" glug glug glug... "you ready for another?" *rinse/repeat).

One suggestion: Get there early because this place packs up pretty quickly for ppl who want to pregame prior to hitting the bars.

Hands down the best all you can eat and drink sushi place in the city!!! I've been to a few other places but no one else replenishes your beer or sake as quickly as these guys do. Also they will give you BOTH sake and beer unlike some other places that just serve sake and make you pay for the beer.

The decor and the atmosphere...who cares??? You're probably not going to remember it anyway!!!

But if you're planning on coming here on a weekend night with a large group either prepare for a long wait or make reservations. If loud and obnoxious people annoy you this is not the place to be. Order more sushi early because when you're drunk and sloppy they try to serve you less fish and more rice with your orders.

Ok. The sushi/rolls aren't the best nor do they suck. Hey its all you can eat! So why the 4 stars? If ya bring all your friends and pay $5 more (all the sake and Sapporo you can chugged down), you can really have a great shiet show! OOOOOOOOOooooo RAH baby! Oh. 2 hour limit. Seriously. They will time you.

All-you-can-eat sushi for $25. Add $5 and you can get ayce sake, too. Just don't forget that everyone at the table has to get ayce or no one can! Otherwise you can take advantage of their 50% rolls/pieces deal.

The best part of this ayce deal is that the variety they have is wide and varied (try the Black Pepper Tuna or Dancing rolls). However, I wouldn't say that the quality is the best; it's pretty average.

The service is ridiculously slow, which causes a bit of worry when trying to fit the most amount of sushi in your belly in under two hours. But hey, if you order a lot in your first order you make it worth your while. Also won't say much for the ambiance, either.

All this and I give it three stars and will go back... because if you have two hours and an extra stomach for sushi specifically (which I do), it makes it worth it.

Truth be told i'm not a big fan of sushi whatsoever. Call me ignorant or close-minded if you want but like don't like my food raw enough to be able to engage in a conversation with it about how Obama's doing so far. So when Joolie extended the offer to dine with her I was reluctant. Fortunately that all dissapeared when the food came. I ordered the Chicken Tempura Maki and the Sweet Patato Maki and they were both awesome. There's a choice between eating a la carte or all you can eat for 30 bucks. The waitstaff was ridiculously attentive, taking empty plates and filling water glasses only seconds after you put it down. Minus a couple of stars for the atmosphere. Unknown to myself and the other dinner guest, it was "Bridge & Tunnel" night...nothing but table banging, gold chains, sudden outbursts of acclamation for Derek Jeter and the scent of knockoff Burberry cologne. I'll make a mental note to come back on a weekday next time.

Good AYCE (~$25), even better AYCE and drink (~$30).

The rolls aren't bad, but nothing to rave about.  I would try the sashimi first before you order an entire order.  The quality has been mixed.  The 4 stars are because of its value.   The sushi chefs are pretty quick, even for a weekend night (it also helps if you are Asian, as I get the feeling they prepared our orders quicker)

This place is loud as (especially in the back room), but makes for a great place to sake bomb.

So my sushi binge apparently has not ended as this past weekend I was craving some sushi goodness. I decided to try something else new that I could find on http://delivery.com. This place was very cheap, though now, reading about the all you can eat special makes me wish I actually went to the restaurant for my meal. The delivery was very fast, and the delivery man had enough change for me without my even having to ask in advance, which was great.

I ordered:

1. Pork Gyoza - $4.95
2. Volcano Roll - 50% off $11.95 shrimp tempura roll with spicy sauce wrapped with salmon and avocado on top - $6.00
3. Alaska Maki - 50% off $6.50 Salmon, avocado - $3.25

I half expected the Volcano roll to be bigger since usually the special rolls are, but in this case it was a regular size, kind of disapointing, but it tasted good anyway. The alaska roll was good too, tasted fresh. They gave me a lot of wasabi, ginger and soy sauce which was a plus. The gyoza came with its own sauce but the dumplings themselves were pretty bad-- too soft, came apart easily. I like them crunchier, but I will take into account that they were delivered and not freshly out of the kitchen.

I would probably prefer one of the other places I recently ordered delivery from over this one (see my Sushi List here: http://www.yelp.com/li... ), but the prices here are hard to beat, and apparently so are the deals.

Although I admit that I rarely venture out of my neighborhood to try new restaurants, largely since there are so many here, I do, however, make exceptions. And, I am glad I made an exception for New Ashiya.

My girlfriend and I have been to New Ashiya twice: once to actually dine there and the other time for take-out since it was extremely packed and we couldn't find a parking spot.  The following review will obviously be about our dining experience there.

Ambiance: Not surprisingly, a raucous crowd (yes, mostly filled with undergrads and some out-of-towners), can be found on any given night at this establishment. I concur with the other reviewers who have pointed out that this place certainly isn't good for couples seeking a romantic, quiet dinner.  If, however, patrons are looking for a lively and fervent atmosphere, then one definitely gets that and more at New Ashiya. As for the decor, it's decorated decently  with polished hardwood floors and muted wallpapering.  As for the seating, we sat in a booth and the cushioning was quite comfortable.

Service: Although the place was packed, we were able to find a booth with no trouble at all.  Soon after we sat down, our waitress arrived and took our drink orders. We decided to skip the tempting all we can drink deal and stick with the water.  After a couple of minutes, our waitress came back to our table and took our order.  Even though the place was packed almost to capacity, our food arrived promptly and our waitress was courteous and professional.

Sushi: I was impressed by the numerous sushi selections on the menu.  The establishment offers sandobe house special rolls (on crab meat), standard maki rolls, vegetarian maki rolls and specialized saki rolls. We ended up ordering four rolls (all of which seemed fresh and tasted delicious): spicy crunch yellowtail, spicy crunch salmon roll, the "lover roll" (salmon crab meat & avocado w. spicy tuna & tempura flake on top) and the spider roll (softshell crab).  Especially for the little amount of money to be paid for the meal, the portions were quite plentiful and each piece was decently-sized.  After eating all four rolls, our respective appetites were satiated (obviously using this verb in a good way).

For a inexpensive sushi splurge, I highly recommend eating here and trying their many different sushi rolls.
