a very touristy Restaurant but if you can get a seat at the window with a view of Alcatraz - you'll enjoy the dining.  This was our 4th time at Neptunes and we are from New England, so that says we like it. However, the hostess was rude and when we asked for a seat near the window she actually lied by stating that it was buy reservation only. I assumed a new policy but when I asked other diners how they got their seats near the windows - we were told that they simply asked! Sad that a hostess would tread customers like she did us.

Our waiter did move us and was appalled when I told him what the hostess did.

I suggest getting the "crab 4 ways". Being from New England, I am not easily impressed by fish. Oysters, crab, salmon or any other food from the sea is a daily staple for us. But the 4 way was quite delicious! The sword and salmon is over priced and they typically want folks to get in and get out quickly.

all in all - a nice place to eat with a real nice view!

I will have to agree that this is a very "touristy" type of restaurant but that is exactly what you are going to find on the Warf!  If you have a window seat the views are fantastic and that is what you are paying for.  I tried the crab 4-way which was very tasty but the portions were small compared to the price... again I think you are paying a great deal for the view which was also evident by the price of the drinks.

I enjoyed the meal and the experience for one time but this would not be a regular spot for me if I were a local.  Good for a one time meal.

First of all get into the mind set that this is a restaurant in the middle of a big tourist area.  The view is beautiful and they keep the windows exceptionally clean so as to not obstruct the view.  I went with a group of 10 without a reservation and the staff was very accommodating.  Of course we were there a little past the lunch run so I'm sure it wasn't too much of a hassle.  The restaurant is large decorated with seafaring  items and lots of heavy dark wood.  It was quiet and away from the crowds so our group had a relaxing time.

The menu is what you would expect at a restaurant on the water for tourists. Service was fast.  The table shared the seafood tower appetizer which was plenty for the table.  The variety was good and the food well cooked.  I had the seafood bisque with sherry and  crab linguine.  The bisque was flavorful but I think they forgot to add the sherry.  The crab was cooked well but the dish itself was bland.  I'm not sure they even salted it.

I'm not sure the view is worth it when it comes to the actual food.  I'd be torn as to whether to go back or not......probably not.......

6 years ago we had the best experience at the Neptune restaurant, while the food was very pricy, the presentation and taste made it well worth it and deserving of another visit.
We just returned from spending over 3 bills as in hundreds and the food and service was no different than going to McDonalds and paying $25.00 dollars,  when the waiter brought out our salad, he carried the pepper shaker under the nook of his arm pit and that turned up off immediately, talk about canival freak - that he was. It was amazing he didnt have a cigarette hanging out of his mouth too, would have made it more entertaining, once we got the bill there was a $12.00 department of health fee?  what is that, spooky.

Great view which supports the three stars.  Utter tourist trap which is why I can't rate it higher than three stars.  I was here having a beer with my cousins and uncle (kind of weird, this guy and his late wife babysat me when I was like, five years old) and just couldn't help thinking that 1) it was kind of dead (location, location, location), 2) seeing Alcatraz from there was cool, and 3) the garlic fries were too garlicy (wayyyyy too much minced garlic not he top).

    Overall?  Meh.

For some reason, I was just underwhelmed when I came here.  The decor was lovely and the view was beautiful, but the food just didn't seem worth the price.  I was so discouraged by the prices that I just ended up getting the clam chowder, which was actually pretty good.  However, I could get a meal with clam chowder at Boudin for about the same price.  Probably wouldn't come here again.

P.S.  As another reviewer mentioned, the clam chowder does come with bread, so if you're not super into bread, no need for the bread bowl.

Tourists - DO NOT COME HERE! Although it is away from the "noise" of the hustle and bustle..do not come here.  Go to the Ferry Building instead.

The waiter, R. was polite but lacked "personality" and "enthusiasm".

Although the windows are sparkling clean and you get an amazing view of the bay, the food is sub-par.

The clam chowder in a bowl - $$.  They give you sourdough bread so you don't really need to get a bowl if you are NOT a dough person.  Lack of clam chowder goodness.

I did not try the sandwiches but they start at $14+.  The fries were okay.

The salad did not look fresh; although presentation was good.

Our lunch menu came to almost $90 for 4 people. You do the math!

I have been coming here every year for Thanksgiving dinner ever since I was a little girl, its a family tradition. The food is amazing! Their seafood is so fresh.  On Thanksgiving they do have the traditional turkey, stuffing, cranberries, ect. But they normally don't.  Extensive wine selection with more than one PINOT GRIGIO (+2 stars!!).

The views here will steal your heart and make you simply fall in love with San Fransisco and Neptune's Palace.

The restaurant has and old feel to it, but it is super classy and not dilapidated at all.  I fear that a classic restaurant like this may go out of business with so many up-and-coming trendy restaurants in the city.  But then again its been around forever so hopefully it stays away! I love you Neptune

I guess they don't really care about quality since they have an awesome view of the bay. My friend and I stopped here for lunch one day and everything on the menu was way overpriced for lunch. After deciding for awhile, I finally ordered the pan fried sea bass sandwich. The fish itself wasn't tasty nor salty even. Overall the bread was pretty soft and the fries were nice and crunchy. But it was a disappointment for this place.

I guess the aim here isn't really for repeat customers, assuming that most of their guests are out of towners who stop in because of the view.  Well, we aren't out of towners, and we certainly won't be back.

Everyone was pleasant enough, I guess.  Pretty much everyone there seemed like they wanted to be somewhere else.  We were sat by the window overlooking the bay.  My napkin had lipstick stains on it... ew.  The corner of the table cloth had coffee and/or chocolate stains on it.  Gross.

We ordered appetizers, which never came.  We weren't charged for it so maybe our waiter didn't hear?  Except... my husband asked for it twice :|

My food was pretty yummy... a sear ahi sandwich.  Except it wasn't so much seared as it was cooked "medium well"... not my favourite, but I love ahi, so it was okay!  Husband had seared swordfish with poopy looking potatoes and creamed spinach.  He seemed to enjoy it all, but isn't big on sides regardless so I'm sure he was just being polite.

OH! and!! there was inexplicably CRAB! in my mojito.  No kidding... one big chunk and a bunch of floaty bits in the bottom of my glass!! What?  I don't even... No one at the table even had crab sooo.  I was pretty grossed out.  The waiter kind of had a "oh, not again" attitude when I told him.  He took it off our bill and told us he took it off our bill like he was doing us a huge favour.  Hey, man, I drank 1/6 of a drink with CRAB IN IT.  You better take it off our bill.  We weren't offered a replacement either.

    Annoying and gross.  Ick.

I was prepared to let the crummy service, dirty linens and overpriced food go for the tastiness and the ambiance, but seriously... EW crab in my drink?  No thanks.

Alright first let me just say this place has terrible food quality and horrible service.

    1. The Food
It was just horrific when the food came out. I got the seafood bisque but it tasted like sour tomato soup with a bunch of fish thrown into it. The oysters smelled like it came out of someones behind and tasted extremely bad. Then came the seafood fettucine. That was bland and horrible.

    2. The Service
We waited thirty minutes for a table when there were thirty something tables free and open. Then we waited an additional 20 minutes for the check to arrive. The staff was unhelpful and the busboy refused to take away our plates even when they were empty. A full hour was just spent on waiting.

The only thing that made up for this disaster was the view. The view was scenic and nice. Got some good photos.

The fact that the view is the only good part about this resturant is extremely sad. Avoid eating here unless you want a good view.

Three stars for the ocean side views (Alcatraz, sea lions, etc.) and good (not great) food. Service very average - not that friendly. A huge place but on a Saturday afternoon very few people so that was actually nice. But given the fact that every other restaurant on the wharf was very crowded, well, that tells you something. I'd go back but only in a pinch.

If I was a tourist, I would come here.  Nice view of the Bay, Coit Tower, and Golden Gate bridge, but the food was just average food.  This place would be a nice place for proms, date nights, etc. You are not going to be coming here for their food.  It is probably average at best but then again what do you expect from a touristy area?  Great company, vacation mode, good wine with friendly service is all you really need.  Julio, our bartender, did a great job.  Always checking up on us.  Making sure we were taken care of.  Made sure we didn't drink too much............etc.

It's a good place to hang out once in a blue moon.  Going to Pier 39 as a local is always a different feel.  Why don't more locals go to Pier 39 and visit these fine establishments?!?  I don't know why.  Is it because it is pricey? Is there a preconceived notion that the food is not good in the Pier?   We don't like hanging out with tourist?  Trust me........after hanging out with a bunch of my friends, these tourists is a sight for sore eyes.

Maybe they should have a discount for locals.  Sorta like what Disneyland does for their locals.  It would definitely help, I think.  Would that generate more business?  Maybe.  I don't think it would hurt.

To sum it up.  You don't come here for the food.  You come here to share a few cocktails, some appetizers, a few laughs and be gone with your merry self.

Today a friend of mine took me out to eat for my 27th birthday and this is the place that we both decided that looked good at Pier 39.
The ambiance of the restaurant is quite elegant with an intamate setting.Because we went during the night we were not able to see the water however, it was a clear night. We went on a Tuesday night and the restaurant wasn't busy so we were able to be sat and served relatively quickly.
Our server Miles was great, he really took care of us tonight. My friend got the flat bread BBQ chicken with a side of mac and cheese. She said that her only two minor complaints were as followed... her dish was a little on the dry side and the restraint  should of boxed our meals for us.
I got the Dungeness Crab Pasta that comes with Tomatoes, Asparagus & Linguini in a Lobster Cream Sauce and I must say it was really good and I don't have any complaints. Moreover desert! We ordered the chocolate cake which wasn't too rich and was super moist (Oh Mai Gawd, I want this cake right now as I am writing this) and delectable. The second desert that we ordered was the mix up and it was a kind of cute dish to look at with mini creme brulee, glazed fruit and an apple pie granola thing which was excellent I just wish I could remember what they called it.
Now this was my experience and if you are about t visit Pier 39 or San Francisco  and are looking for a nice meal I would give this place a shot and hopefully you'll get the same great service we did tonight.

I went there long time ago from friends out of country and thought it was great place.
My husband and I went back last month and found it is just OK.
Either we were expecting too much or it was not just good.

    Great view, though.
We are surprised when we got our bill.
It is not just this place, but on top of normal TAX there are another TAX for
SF citizen's health care TAX or something, for 5%!
So TAX plus, 5% plus tip.  You are paying way over 20% of what you ate.
    Did not like that.

Delicious. I ordered the 1/2 fresh cracked crab and was still devouring it way after the rest of my party was done with the meal. While it was a bit pricy, and the decor on the outside was not alluring, the inside offered fabulous seafood and beautiful ocean views. We had a very friendly waiter, and we enjoyed fabulous ocean and Golden Gate views through their floor to ceiling windows. Really good food, especially the fried fish and crab.
For slightly more casual dining, the Sea Lion cafe next to the restaurant offers a lower-priced menu, but is operated out of the same kitchen and it's food is equally as delicious.
Huge recommendation if you're on Pier 39.

Ok so I have a rule never to eat at touristy places. Why? They always suck. And yet for some reason, I had the inexplicable urge to eat at this place on pier 39 and do the whole touristy thing. I am almost thankful I did, because it ingrained my rule forever in my head. Ok first off, the service was terrible from the get go. We stood a while waiting for someone to acknowledge us and then had to wait for them to sort out where exactly they wanted us to sit, despite the many open tables. Finally, when it came time to sit an order, we were kept waiting so long that I was absolutely starving by the time my sea bass showed up.

Now this is a key point because usually if you are extra extra hungry, whatever you finally get satisfies you so well that you may overstate its greatness. This was not my problem. My fish was terrible. It was bland and mushy. The vegtables it was served on lacked any sort of pop or really flavor that stood out at all!  Tasting it went as follows:

Hmmm I taste kinda mushy fish flavor....ok here comes the veggies....it tastes like....wait for it....more mush. It was just drawn out fishy mush.

Mush also accurately describes the atmosphere, as I remember the place attempting to be mood lit, but really just came across as foggy as they bay. More mush.

Come to think of it, mush describes this place. Mush service, mush food, mush atmosphere. Nothing stands out and nothing is special. Will never go back.

This clean restaurant has a great view towards Alcatraz right on the Pier 39. You may even run into a celebrity or two there. However, when it comes to good food Neptune unfortunately fails. This tourist trap has very plain food that just doesn't excite. As expected, because of its location, this place is expensive.  If you want seafood and are already by Pier 39, walk down a couple of blocks to Fisherman's Wharf for an actual treat at great prices.

    5 - 4 - 3 - 1.

5: The view. Tourist trap or not, that is one stunning scene out the window of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.

4: Warm bread was rather good.

3: Seafood tower salad was not bad, plenty of seafood, could have used more greens and veggies. The opposite of usual.

    2: Those prices.

Be smart. Come with one of those Pier 39 locals coupons floating around so you can enjoy a five star view with four star bread and a three star salad at half the price.

NEVER AGAIN!!  we had eaten here many time over the years, but it seems the staff has changed or perhaps it was just an off day but our experience was HORRIBLE! Our server seemed inconvienced that he had to return to our table to take our drink order because a member of our party wasn't present when we were seated, it went downhill from there. The server made the comment that HE had a problem with one of our people asking for mashed potatoes instead of rice.  WHAT? mashed potatoes were on the menu how difficult is it to put potatoes instead of rice.  He was Rude and arrogant. we decided to finish our drinks and not order a meal. and went to Fog Harbor instead where the food was Excellent as well as the service. we MIGHT try Neptunes Palace one more time just in case this once was a fluke. but for the price the service should be much more accomodating and friendly.

How unfortunate that a tourist might come here and think this represents San Franciscan cuisine. The Bay Area has so  much good food to offer-- don't come here just because it's conveniently located on the pier, which, I suppose, is a tourist must-see.

The only thing good about this place is the view (and only if it's not foggy) and the friendly Australian (?) waitress I had.
Actually, the clam chowder wasn't bad. Not bad at all. In fact, it was pretty good. But my sea bass was so terrible that I feel obligated to give this place 1 star. It had what I call a "fish-tank" taste. Not quite sure what that means, and I've only experienced it a few times in my life, thank god, but it's when the fish just tastes... bad.. and sorta dirty and metallic. I had 1/3 of the fish and just gave up. I usually HATE wasting food, but this was not food. This was a fish that should never have been eaten.. anywhere, and especially not in a restaurant at ~$20.

If you absolutely must go to this restaurant (due to family/business obligations), just make sure you are not fooled by the nice aura. THIS IS NOT A NICE RESTAURANT. Order as you would in a cheap restaurant and assume that every ingredient that would be fresh and yummy in a nice restaurant is NOT in this restaurant.
Just get a sandwich, the chowder, and maybe a salad.
    And don't have high expectations.

I was incredibly bummed by Neptune's Palace! The hubby & I fell into the tourist trap of Fisherman's Wharf-the gorgeous February day & beautiful view Neptune's offered is what lured us in.

We were wearing 'nice' jeans (ha!) and greeted by the hostess staring us up and down, with a look as we if were underdressed. However, all types were inside; several tables with folks in 'biking' gear.

The best part was the view & dessert (creme brulee trio).  The tuna was very sub par. I could have picked up some from Whole Foods & been more impressed with my own cooking.  Our bill was $120+ for 2 entrees, 3 alcoholic bevs and dessert.

Next time I'm on the the wharf we will definitely choose otherwise!

If you're looking for a place for a quiet drink with a nice view, I'd highly recommend Neptune's Palace.  Positioned on the end of Pier 39, it provides a nice view of the bay and Alcatraz.

But if you're looking for good seafood, head elsewhere.  My wife and I were quite disappointed in out dinners. I had crab-encrusted swordfish--the crab was quite good, but the swordfish was overcooked and tasteless.  My wife had a seafood risotto that was overpowered by the sundried tomatoes.  Overall I find the place overpriced for seafood that is just okay.

    Merry Christmas!
I'm always apprehensive about eating at The Wharf. You just have to depend on your experience as an old local. You know The Franciscan is good... Grotto No.9... but what about Pier 39? It reeks of tourist trap. Well, we had a coupon for the Neptune Palace that included free parking, and half off all crab entrees! With that carrot dangling over us... we bit!

So the parking turned out to be free for only 2 hours, and 20 minutes of that is burned on your leisurely stroll to the end of the pier where the restaurant is. The place had a decent crowd for 8pm Christmas Eve. Service is excellent. Fast, accommodating and friendly. Asked for a table seat, and got one. The view is really nice. Fairly clear night... GG Bridge lights leading to Marin. Probably better during the day.

The seafood isn't bad at all. I had the roasted sea bass with shitake mushrooms and garlic mashed potatoes. Tender, fresh and flavorful. Also ordered was grilled salmon, fried calamari and a whole dungeness crab. Wine and Kioke Coffees... We had a pretty nice feast. The sourdough rolls were warm, toasted crust with soft center. Totally San Francisco. The Tiramisu was loaded with rum, thank you.

The best part was the prices. Pretty reasonable... before the coupon discount. It was great to eat at touristy joint without feeling ripped off.

Great service... good, but not great food... pleasant view...

I recommend Neptune Palace Seafood as very COOL!

Giving this place 1 star is a little too generous. If I could, I'd give them 0.

Ohhh..right..the view!  Silly me! That's why people would even bother eating here, right? Sure...I guess it's great. I mean, I can gaze at Alcatraz sitting atop the greenish...er...sparking(?) water while eating!

The bread was cold and hard and it felt like I was chewing on beef jerky.  I asked for water and the waitress asked me if I wanted "Still or Sparkling?" I was waiting for her to offer a third option AKA regular filtered tap water. But nope! My "Still" water came in a fancy schmancy green glass bottle with MADE IN ITALY stamped on it. I didn't check to see how much it cost but our bill came out to $206.

Our food took forever and a day to come out and we didn't get any apologies. It took so long in fact, that my "Fisherman's Stew" was served to me with some of the oil/fat starting to harden on the surface of the "stew". I don't even know why they call it stew. It was the most watery Ciopinno I've ever had the displeasure of tasting with meager amounts of actual seafood and an overload of watery tomato sauce and penne pasta.

I thought the place might be able to redeem itself if their desserts satisfy my sweet tooth. I asked the waitress for a recommendation and she suggests the creme brulee.

    ..........

I guess the creme brulee sat under the broiler (or torch) for too long cause there were burnt spots all over the top. It made the creme brulee disgustingly bitter.

Sadly, the view of the murky green water and the depressing far off deteriorating prison failed to offset the crappy food. I knew I should've eaten and Bubba Gumps across the way. :(

    Dislike:
    1. Didn't like the server, he didn't seem very nice.
    2. The angel hair pasta that came with the crabcakes was cold. WTF?
    3. The free bread rolls were too hard.
    4. The "special" wasn't that special .  A few pieces of seafood, plus a mountain of mashed potato?!
    5. Waiter was slow to process payment

    Like:
    1. Saw a Captain Sparrow impersonator inside the restaurant (COOL!)
    2. They give lemon and warm clothes to wash our hands from seafood
    3. Water gets refilled all the time

Overpriced.  Slow, apathetic service.  Half-hearted preparation.  The oysters were opened for us but sloppily so; bits of shell were floating in the oyster water and one was served on the lid for no particular reason.

Unremarkable overall other than being bland and not worth the price.

This is totally an A-OK! Place. It is not super fabulous. It is not horrific (like some write). You don't go there for the super fabulous. You go there when people who have never been to San Francisco want to have a very nice view while eating extremely good Chiopino. My husband absolutely loved the fish appetizer he had and the clam chowder was good. My main dish was not that great. Very flavorful, yes.... but way overcooked (It was Korean Ribs)... The waitress was nice but a bit slow for a pretty empty place.
I still enjoyed it. I am sure now that we have been Mark will want to check out other places but you still have to give it credit that the view is great and for first timers it is very good.
    Enjoy~!
