One of the hardest parts about going to the Belvedere Market in Belvedere square is figuring out where to eat. Once you get inside, you have to choose between Atwater's Ploughboy soups, Ikan Seafood Sushi, Neopol, and a variety of other market style eateries. For DC folks, it's like Eastern Market without the crowds.
On the most recent trip, I went to Neopol Savory Smokery. In addition to the excellent selection of sandwiches featuring smoked meats, they have a lot of food you can get packed up to take home. Andouille Sausage, interesting hummus, and various smoked fish all look great behind the glass case.
I went with the chicken sandwich, which is a smoked and sliced chicken breast with thin sliced apple, gouda cheese, greens, and red onions, served on whole wheat. The whole sandwich was heated up in the oven before serving, and it came out perfectly. It was a little pricey at 8.50, but clearly a cut above your usual lunchtime meal.
The only reason they get four stars is the service was slow, even though they only had three people getting food. There may have been some new staff that day.
Oh, and don't forget to save room for the Peanut Shoppe, which is right inside the market as well! Candy, chocolate covered pretzels, cookies, and a myriad of peanut preparations await.
