From what I can remember in the deep recesses of my formerly drunk and drug addled brain, I really like Neo. I spent about 9 years of my life here- dressing up, having fun and getting rowdy drunk. Loved the music and the eye candy. Can't believe the club is still there! I think i'll make a point of visiting the next time I'm in Chicago.
Oh, and don't make the lethal mistake of dating anyone who hangs out here. Once I quit dating people I met at Neo life improved. Leave your one night stand at the club for a happy life lol.
Other drawbacks, if you get too drunk and start or engage in a fight, they *might blacklist you for a while. Not that that ever happened to me.
This is a goth/industrial club in an alley... can it begin to be better than that?
The first time I came here.. I was 15 years old and used a Navy ID from my buddy that looked somewhat like me and had gone in just before, and handed it back to an over 21 buddy who came out.. and well, we did a switcharoo.
now that I see pics of me when I was 15.. lol. well.. it was awesome and I shouldn't have made it in.
I just spent the past summer living in Lincoln park a few blocks away.. and well, nostalgia had driven me to go back a few times.
The first visit- my high school era friend puked all over the dance floor mid morrissey/manson mix. I even drunkenly paid the bouncer off for cleaning it before we left (got kicked out).
Some visits after- I met a nice hottie wearing a school girl outfit. She is a singer in a few cover bands.. and I sort of fell for her... but she just used and abused me and wanted a fling for a month. sigh... How can I even complain?
Plus in the times in between and after- the bartender got to know me by face and we all did waaay too many jameson glasses together. I say glasses because shots would imply far too small of a near vomit gulp.
Fun times at a fun place.
I had the best night of my life here a few weeks ago. How can you not love this place on Thursdays? It's sooo jamming and everyone is so nice and just out to have a rockin' good time.
Sometimes they do themed nights within the theme. Example: Thursday are always the Atomic New Wave Dance party, but sometimes they'll have guest djs, or a cure tribute night, or a face off between the Smiths and Depeche Mode, or a Prom night. Anyway, I think the theme within a theme nights can be a little iffy. Prom night was fantasmo, the blog release party was kind of a dud, the March madness playoffs are okay but I like my variety.
The newish dj there, Khamar is AWESOME! He'll honor pretty much any new wave request and play it within 20 minutes of your request... he totally rocks!

Uhm, awesomely awesome and amazing.
Thursdays are New Wave nights and the absolute most fun you… Read more »
I had heard that Neo feels more like a scene from Blade than a night club in Lincoln Park.
I suppose, upon having visited my first time, that one could certainly concur with that assessment, regardless of its location.
I was surprised, honestly - the young woman at the door was nice, the bartender was nice. We sat down - got a few stink eyes, but whatever, I thought, "I'm here for a birthday celebration, I'm going with it."
We ended up leaving b/c the music was kind of lame and it wasn't really our thing - I hear Thursday is an epic night to go. Ok, fine.
I paid $5 to come, sit, have a beer, and decide that this wasn't necessarily a place I was in the proper mood for, or constitution for (just personal preference I guess).
You wanna enter a club via alleyway? You want to see gothic archways around the dance floor? You want Neo.
It's not really my thing, just sayin'...
I have been to Neo a couple of times and I remember it being a good time. I recently came here for their 30th anniversary of their DJ's. It was a great party! The place so SO packed and everyone was having a good time. The music was awesome and I was shakin my stuff on the dance floor. It was super packed that night so it was hard to get too crazy with the dancing. They did a ton of 80s remix songs and they had video to go along with the music. Very cool.
Drinks are strong, crowds are friendly and the entrance is located in the back of an alley; which ups the cool factor. It is a goth bar but go there and check it out. You will have a good time!
What, what! Show me what you got and who cares what other people think...
I love this place b/c you can come here, dance by yourself, dress how you want, and no one cares or is judgemental. I haven't been on their busiest night (Thursday), but Saturday nights (2nd busiest night) was a great time!
I'll be coming here much more often where I can be myself with no worries of drunk frat boys grabbing my @ss. Plus, it kind of reminds me of the club in Blade or even Fangtasia from True Blood....Hott!
Ok, this place is definitely different, but there are probably only like 3 bars like this in the US so go check it out just so you can at a minimum say "yes, i went to a goth dance club"
you will see every goth/industrial stereotype you expect and then probably some unexpected things to.
Check it out, you'll see
I am happily committed to my best friend, however, I would be easily swayed to commit bff adultery if you joined me here. Yes, it is that tempting.
Hidden between two buildings in an alley, Neo is an exception to the typical Lincoln Park bar/club. Thank God for that. If you like orange skin, walk a few blocks north, but you aren't going to find it here.
What I love about Neo is that no one cares what you're doing or what you look like. Completely unpretentious, and it's refreshing. Sure, my Elaine Benes dancing is enough to have tomatoes thrown my way, but here? No way! It's cool to just dance alone here, but beware--mesh shirt guy seems to prey on this. I have never missed my friends so much before in my life, and that includes a recent two week hospital stay. They had to leave early, and a really great song had just come on, leaving me no choice but to remain where I was. I naively subjected myself to the strangest, oldest, meshiest 80's enthusiasts of Chicago. The one guy who offered me popcorn was pretty cool and requested a few songs for me. I couldn't leave without hearing Bizarre Love Triangle and would begin to doubt the validity of 80's night without it. But at the stroke of 3, I had to reluctantly say farewell to Neo, and got lost walking the deserted streets of Lincoln Park. Great night.
When I first walked into this place, I never thought I'd be saying this now - but Neo is my favorite place to dance in Chicago. I look NOTHING like most of the people that frequent a place like this (i.e. goth, or whatever they all are) but it totally doesn't matter! They didn't judge me (at least i didn't feel judged) and everyone just does their own thing. The drinks were pretty strong, and reasonably priced.
My favorite thing about Neo is that there is space to dance without having to bump and grind against every other person in there. There are no annoying frat guys trying to rub themselves down your back - people just leave you alone!
Love it. Going tonight :-)
Man there isn't one bad thing I can say about this place. I usually go on Wednesdays and then occasionally to Pandemic Friday's once a month. Drinks are fairly priced, I drink their nice sized PBR's for $3. So I can't really complain. It plays just the right music (pending on the night) and it's always fun to dance til you drop. The people that work there are very nice and if one of them is on a smoke break they'll gladly approach you and talk to you or just say a simple hello. It's a place where if you go, you don't feel judged like most clubs in Chicago. There's a very "We accept you." vibe in there. And I think that's what most places should go for. Now we see why this gem has been open for 30 years, cause it's just that fantastic.
The only place so far where I can dance my ass off until 4 in the morning.
I used to be a regular at Berlin, but that place got on my nerves (crowded to the point of severe claustrophobia, too many trannies, sycophantic cokehead hipsters, and don't get me started on the suburbanites who go to Berlin to "watch" all the weirdos like its a freakin' zoo)
Then Neo came to the rescue and saved my night life.
Best night - Thursday nights! Ive been here quite a few times, and every time I come in, the music is great. New wave night. I was just here the Thursday before Lolla for the Depeche Mode tribute. Great night... The crowd is incredibly diverse and fun.
The entrance is located in an alley, Ha! That little walk to the door is insane, esp if youre already intoxicated. But gives Neo that special touch. Ooh and they have Chimay! Another fave beer of mine.. Cash only, but that's okay. Carrying a little cash never hurt anyone. Open till 4am for those late night owls, such as myself. Good times every single time I've been here.... Neo-My Thursday night dance night!
I am a big fan of their New wave night (Atomic Thursdays) and have been since I turned 21 (Summer of '08). I found a place where they prices of booze isn't so traumatic and has great music! Nothing better than dancing out to Depeche Mode. Well, except maybe Motorhead.
Although, lately... it has been sort of trying to go there. Management isn't exactly the nicest guy out there. I remember a night where the bar was closing. It was raining dogs and cats out and no one brought umbrellas.
Now, i ask anyone who reads this.. as a manager, would you want people to come back to your establishment? If that's a yes, then you wouldn't drop kick people into the rain like a jerk.
Apparently, this manager doesn't care about money or having a good business sense.
Another complaint is the exclusive attitudes some of the regulars have. I like to mingle with new people. All the time. I have no ill will towards others. I treat people the way I would like to be treated. At Neo, i guess that doesn't apply. I am not a jock or a goth. I am just me. So, not too many friendly faces around.
Other than that, I dig dancing with their superb selection of music and their affordable drinks. I suggest you check it out. The cover is relatively cheap (Most clubs charge 10-20 dollars). 5 dollar cover isn't exactly too bad.
If you can't find the entrance, then you aren't meant to be there....
Neo makes the best Midori Sour in town. And is a great place to kick back & relax.
I love this place! I've only been once, but I'm definitely going back. The music is great, the crowd is fun, and everything is pretty affordable. I also loved the music! If you like new wave, go on thursdays. All your dreams will come true!
There are many challenges in the current bar and nightlife scene. Among them: finding a reliable spot, avoiding weekend warriors, and locking down a location that knows both music and drinks. For a club to counter even one of those factors is a challenge.
Thankfully, Neo succeeds on all counts. The goth haunt is about as close as many of us will get to the Batcave -- if the Batcave played Bauhaus. With pitch black corners, Neo is the perfect location to enter and get lost in. Or -- take center stage and dance all night in the room's consistently-packed dance floor. Thursday nights are especially notable, as the club cranks out nu-wave, '80s, and a seemingly endless stream of Depeche Mode remixes until 4am.
Skip the amateur hours in the city, dig out your early '90s NIN concert t, lace up the 25-hole steel-toes, and head out to Chicago's only true goth-punk spot. The party's already there.
My foot is disabled. Because some stupid idiotic girl stepped on my foot with her ugly goth heels and hurt it. She ground down on my foot. And didn't even say she was sorry. Ouch. And if i see her in an alley... she will hurt like my foot does.
I only give 2 stars because thursday is 80s dance party, and they played one of my fave prince songs and cut copy. Otherwise neo... the goth girls be hurtin my foot with their ugly goth heels.
Thursday nights. Me in my new wave get up. Heaven on Earth.
Just like everyone says... Thursday's Atomic night (new wave) is the place to be. Great dancing, lots of good looking women, and even better music. And thank god, it's not just the same 40 hits from the 80's. It seems Kamar and Qbot put alot of work into finding new music in the new wave feel. One of the few nights I consistently stay out till 4am.
It's 100% true that this is the best people-watching in the city. The last time I was there, in fact, I saw the Highlander. He was wearing a sexy-hot skirt made out of studded leather belts.
No, I'm not kidding.
The music is pretty awesome and definitely interesting. Unlike Exit, there's still a dancefloor and it's well-used. There's also a really nice lounge-y area next to the dancefloor with lots of low seating where you can get comfy and watch the amazing happen right in front of you.
The downfalls are:
It's super-loud. Not just bar/club loud, but ooc (out of control) loud. You can't speak unless you shout, and the next morning your voice is gone.
It's super-pretentious. You would think, that members of a fringe group who have been unfairly ostracized their entire lives might be a little more accepting of people who don't "fit in" with them, but you'd be wrong. If you go, you better wear the uniform. At the very least, wear a lot of black and perfect your sneer. Do not, I repeat, do not look like a tourist - even if you are one.
It's really dark inside. Like "please roofie my drink" dark.
That said, I have fun every time I go. Sometimes you're not sure whether you're laughing with them or at them - but either way you're laughing.
I don't recall ever being here aside from Thursday nights.
I barely recall those Thursday nights.
If you ever wondered what happened to all those Goth people from High School, they're here.
Every Thursday night.
But I heart New Wave music, and shake my ass every time I am there.
Really good people watching. Really good dance party music. Wanna go?
NEO has been a staple among my friends on thusrday nights for 80's night. they used to go for like 8 weeks straight, every friggin' Thursday.
dont get me wrong, i like going here for the music and for my friends but i can only take so much of that place. i went for like 2 weeks straight and i needed a break. i still dont plan on going back until maybe mid-summer for a friends birthday that i know will probably take place there.
cant beat $2 PBR and cheap drinks. i love the crowd there. so diverse. no pretentious bullshit. ive never gone any other night. i think ill stick to thursday nights. open until 4 am as well. id say give thursday nights @ NEO a chance if you dig 80's new wave. doesnt get going until around 11pm.
Thursday night is the winner. It starts on the goth end of things, but as the evening progresses they get into lots of great 80s tracks that get the whole place moving.
I went first to a Friday night where the DJs had not interest in paying attention to the request list. Unless you are on top of your Darkwave, I would suggest maybe skipping that night.
It's small enough that even when there aren't too many people, the dance floor feels pretty full. There are fairly regular events nights that get people dressed up as mad scientists and such. If you costume, you'll potentially get free cover. The drinks can very from too weak to too strong, so it takes a bit of practice to pick the right mix.
All in all, Neo makes for a fun evening.
Visited here on a trip to feel out the city before I moved here, and it definitely helped in my decision.
In SF, the only goth night is MONDAY. yea, I don't understand it either. That's the absolute worst night. It made those Tuesdays after I went seem like a second Monday, which is the last thing I need.
So having a place that's goth, industrial, or EBM most nights is a real treat. People seem to put in a bit of effort into what they wear here (unlike SF), and even if they're wearing jeans they atleast have a black shirt on. Some people do go all out with Saris or latex outfits, which is also nice.
The music isn't always perfect for me. It usually seems to be more on the noizecore side of things, getting more so as the night progresses, but I usually end up dancing a fair amount.
Glad to hear Neo is still going strong. Many years ago I was introduced to Neo (not Keanu). A couple of skater boys and a girl in pink (me) stood out from the crowd. Whatever. It was great. Cheap drinks, dark nooks (and crannies), and the most intriguing dancing I had seen. I didn't see Highlander, but I did see Neo (Keanu). His big black boots and long black trench coat kept my eyes entertained as he cocked himself back and forth like a rooster.
I think it was a Depeche Mode song that got me on my feet, even my skater boys found some goth girls to hit it up with. Their dance reminded me of fairies, the goth girls that is. Electro-industrial-goth fairies.
Only after my boys were cut-off from the bar (they weren't even drunk?) did we leave. That seemed odd. Maybe their dancing was too much for the crowd? Maybe my pink top was too bright to behold? Or maybe we were having too much of a good time.
The club is located in a back alley which reminds me of the clubs in LA. Very much a goth/industrial club which can have about 300 max inside? maybe less. The staff there are super nice and friendly and the drink prices are decent. I was there on a Wednesday night which featured Industrial music. Good variety of music by the DJ.
In 2009 I decided to make undaunting New Year's resolutions in the hopes I would actually fulfill them. One of them I just did: Go to Neo.
A group of us got together for their 80's/New Wave set and I was thoroughly impressed. Being a school night, we arrived promptly at 10:00 when doors opened. Not surprisingly we were almost the first there, however within a few moments I noticed two guys dancing, individually, one a tall stout fellow wearing shorts and long socks, the other an older gentleman with fabulous poofy white hair. Within 15 minutes I was on the dance floor too, getting my idiosyncratic groove on. At one point I collided with the poofy white haired guy and we shared a maniacal chuckle and then proceeded to be simultaneously snake-like and staccato in our own universes.
I danced for a spell, went to the bar and chatted up my friends, danced again for a spell, and within an hour and a half the club and dance floor filled up with individuals and a sprinkling of couples rocking out to Depeche mode, flanked by clusters of people drinking, talking, watching, with nary an attitude in sight.
Lose your self-consciousness: Make a resolution to go to Neo.
I only make it here once in awhile, but always try to make my visits on Thursdays for New Wave night. SO FUN.
Even when the bar is totally crowded, the bartenders scurry around to get your something cold in your hands.
Yeah...I'm a fan.
Lots of positive things to say about Neo, assuming you're interested in checking out a club that doesn't quite fit the status quo. If you like the 'darker' side of the Chicago nightclub experience, enjoy EBM, synth-pop, and goth music, and aren't scared of folks wearing black leather and heavy eye makeup, Neo may be for you!
I personally have been coming here for about 16 years on and off...I've been a once-a-week regular for about 6 years now. It's the only place I've really liked since DomeRoom turned into it's less inventive successors.
Since a lot of reviewers have already covered the reasons to go to Neo, I'm going to cover some reasons that some of you folks may want to stay away:
1) you're too cheap to pay cover: look through the negative posts below, and you'll honestly find people whining about the $5 cover charge. Get over it...it's a dance club in a major US city. $5 is less than most clubs in Chicago. If you're not a serious regular and aren't on somebody's list, you haven't built up enough club cred to get in for free.
2) you expect the door staff and bartenders to treat you like god: when I read comments about the rude staff, it usually (but admittedly not always) implies one of several things: (a) you're too cheap to tip the bartender appropriately, and hence get less than premium service; (b) you're a club tourist expecting the bartenders to fawn all over you because you've been around; (c) you couldn't get out of paying cover. The bartenders at Neo are no nonsence folks...treat'em fairly and tip appropriately and you'll be taken care of just fine. If you're interacting with the rest of the staff after paying cover, and you're not a personal friend, it's probably because you're getting bounced for doing something stupid. Other than that, I don't know why you'd have much interaction with the staff...
3) you don't want to go somewhere that you're going to be looked at funny. Now seriously, the majority of people that go to Neo do their own thing, and leave people alone. Which implies that you're either: (a) way too self-conscious (maybe you need anxiety medication), or (b) dressed like rainbow brite. Most of the people here wear black...if you're so concerned about blending in, do the same, duh?! There may be 64 colors in the box, but the people here like a certain scene...if you want more colorful clothing, there are about 10,000 other bars I'm sure you could go to, several within walking distance of Neo.
4) you only want to come to make fun of the goths and freaks. That doesn't go over very well here...if you and your frat guy buddies make fun of the regulars, get in their way while dancing, mimic them, spill beer on them, etc., then what will probably happen is that you'll be asked to leave. And then, since you'll be fairly intoxicated and think you can argue your way out of the situation, you'll end up getting thrown through the door head first. Hey, that's great for me, because I love seeing a guy fly through the air on his way out. Just leave people alone, and enjoy the scene or leave...there's plenty of places to spill beer all over yourself and others while dancing in the city, and Neo's not for you if you're looking for trouble.
yes yes yes! i love coming here on thursdays for new wave night. basically i can show up at neo, not worried about how i look or what shoes i am wearing or whatever, pound a couple of strong, STRONG whiskey sodas, and then dance my heart out to as much cure, joy division, new order, smiths, etc as i want. it's crowded in a good way- lots of fun people to look at, but not so many that the crowd prevents you from FLYING around the dance floor. worth the trip to lincoln park, and it's probably the only time i have ever said that in my life.
I have only been here a few times, but have never been disappointed! Great music to dance to, and decent drinks.
I love the fact that you have to go down a dark alley to get to the door!
What can I say about Neo that hasn't already been said?
I'm a big fan.
I'm not really the hang-out-at-clubs type normally, but Neo's more relaxed atmosphere makes all the difference in the world. There's nothing intimidating about it. Diverse crowd, great tunes, and while many of the patrons are very personable, they also do tend to mind their own business, which is terrific. At Neo, I never get "accidentally" groped or spilled on, and not a single person has ever been rude. This includes the staff, who are wonderful. The drinks are strong and well-made, the bartenders are friendly, they do a great job of keeping the place tidy and for the record, I've never had any problems getting water when I've needed it. Always a great time.
Neo is my favorite little vamp hang out! I love the entrance and i love the space! also great drink specials
A nostalgic five stars. I used to go to Neo when post-punk and industrial were, well, neo. Goth? If I hadn't used protection back then, my kids might have been goth. Grunge was only a twinkle in Kurt Cobain's eye back then.
Here I am goofing around on Yelp and I find Neo still exists.
OK, if you have a time machine, here is your review. In the afternoon, go to a John Hughes film or maybe see Platoon, Oliver Stone's latest. Lay around in your apartment until dinner time playing Bauhaus records. Eat something. Head to whatever bar has ladies' night. Smart Bar? Exit? Avalon? Oh, Neo! Hang out, dance occasionally, head over to the Belden CBC for breakfast at 02:00. (IIRC, Neo didn't have a 4 o'clock license back then.) Lather, rinse, repeat. Then, finish college, get a job, get married, buy a house...
I'm far from goth, but I've never had a bad time at neo. The music is great (esp. if you like industrial). It's a good place to go when you just want to dance by yourself to a good beat without obnoxious frat boys rubbing up against you. Despite first impressions, most regulars are the nicest people you'll ever meet.
It does take nimble fox-like skills to navigate the raised seating/stair situation without stumbling.
I dare you to wear all white here. Tell me how it goes...
But seriously, I am a big fan of places you can go to and dance like no one is watching. Here, there is a line of people lounging and staring at the dance floor in a menacing way, but then they get out there and flail around like they have puppet arms and are playing dance dance revolution on a StairMaster.
I get the feeling that its actually less lonely feeling to come here by yourself, because everyone seems to be dancing by themselves. Sometimes I like to take a break from the booty shakin and come somewhere where the focus is on the many ways that knees and elbows can be made to bend.
The fashion here is somewhere between Hot Topic and Lord of the Rings fan club merchandise. I'm glad to see that Jnco is making a comeback, I was really worried about them lately. I'm also no longer worried about the fate of the zipper and buckle. There were like 5 zippers per every one pair of pants. I could see how people would wear the same outfit again and again, but those leather corsets and platform boots probably cost more than my first car. And isn't it fun to be your very own cartoon character?
I enjoy the enthusiasm for the music because I knew when a new song came on by the collective raver dance pause, despite the fact that the beat was the same. A major plus is that I never heard the phrase "this is my jam right here". Nope, not once. Which really sums up why I gave this four stars. That, and I like to go places where you will be greeted enthusiastically for throwing a two person theme party in the corner.
p.s I laughed when I was asked if they have "happy hour". nope
Update: I went back here and saw one of the regulars wearing an all white tennies player looking outfit. It was hot. So now I know.
Don't be afraid of the dark.
Neo is a place to go do one's own thing. Wear a crazy outfit and dance however bizarrely as you want and no one will sneer at you. Yes, the overwhelming majority of patrons are in black/leather/goth wear, but everyone minds their own business as they get into the music. Most people are dancing solo; there's an eerie beauty in it. If you're lucky, you'll meet Ricardo. That man is a dancing machine!
New wave, metal, industrial, electronic dance... No matter the particular genre of the night, it's all danceable and energising.
The floor/walls are a little beat up, but the dim lighting kinda masks it and it adds to the atmosphere. Check out the awesome dino-Jesus projection, amongst others. Careful on the platform seating in the dark - I tripped and smacked right into my friend's butt.
Neo used to have Maudite on tap - which was my first encounter with Unibroue - but they don't anymore. They do, however, stock about seven or eight of Unibroue's bottled beers. Delicious. They have water bottles available, as well as (free) glasses of water whenever you need them - which you will after dancing. As noted, it's cash only.
Neo was a place I just HAD to experience on my 21st birthday. Their 25th anniversary party a few years ago just about did me in, but I always want to come back!
"I am bored to tears with touching my own penis."
"Where are you going to find someone to touch your penis for you at 3:15am?"
"Let's go to Neo."
"Good point."
... no, really. I've had this conversation.
This is simply put, a goth dance club. First and only time I ever went here, I saw a guy on the dance floor in a preachers outfit just standing in the middle of the floor. Despite what you would think, everyone in there is pretty nice and didn't seem crazy or anything. It's a punk/goth bar so take it for what its worth. The place has been there forever and stayed the same way. I would definitely recommend going here at least once just to try something new. It's open til 4 and usually gets a bunch of pour over from other bars that close earlier so the crowd gets eclectic. Do yourself a favor and go to an all you can drink special, hammer down as many beers and drinks as you can and go to Neo. It will be a funny story you can tell everyone in the future.
We all love to hate Neo. The truth is, it has a special place in my heart.
Maybe it's the dark, dankness of the place, the characters who frequent week after week, or the almost always great music (especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays).
It's certainly not the rather expensive drink prices (hence the 4 out of 5 stars), but what do you expect from a Lincoln Park 4am?
Neo has a rich, seedy history, and that's just something you should appreciate.
Arrive on a Friday or Saturday for stompy music, and to view the stompy dancing. Come by on a Thursday to dance the night away to your favorite new wave and alternative 80s tracks. Hell, even stumble in at 2am when your other destination closes. You'll always find lots of great people watching, at the very least.
ps- We all love the guy in the white shirt who shows up most Thursdays. Let's start collecting nicknames:
"The Maestro"
"The Waiter"
"Romanti-goth"
