The folks at Nelson Tailor Shop are ....superstars! !  Thanks Nelson and Ray.

I just moved here from SF and found them via Yelp.  I live on the UWS but since Nelson got such good reviews I gave them a try even though they were not close.  They did a really great job on all the 10 shirts that I took there(I needed all the shirts taken in ). I first took in 3 dress shirts. They were done in 1 day and they did a great job! So I then took in another 7 dress shirts. They were done in 2 days!!!  The $14 per shirt includes taking in the waist as well as sleeves.

Tried Nelson Tailor Shop for the first time and he did an amazing job on my Uniqlo J+ chesterfield jacket that I bought a few weeks ago.  The jacket was a size too large when I bought it (I bought one of the few Mediums left) but now fits me perfectly.

The service was quick and he knew exactly what I had in mind after a few quick questions.  I overheard some price quotes for other customers ($4 or so to hem jeans, pants, etc; $7 to take pants in).  I'll definitely go to Nelson's for any future projects.

Do not take anything you value to Nelson. You have been warned.

The lowdown. I found this place through yelp when my regular tailor (Stanton) went on vacation. My needs were very minimal, so I figured no big deal, I'll give it a go.

So I dropped-off 3 pair of pants (two waists and a hem), got my ticket for 30 ducats and thought I might just have a new tailor if things go well.

The results? Two pant legs exactly 1 inch shorter than we agreed on - which was mid-heel so that would be 1 pair of $200 pants rendered unwearable. Next up,  2 jeans that were inexplicably taken in at the leg rather than the waist. Huh?

So back to the shop I go, fairly irritated. He asks how much I paid for the alterations, then tells me that's the problem: waists are 20 each... I paid 10 so there was a miscommunication. Right. I tell him I tried the pants on, he made chalk marks on them where he was gonna cut, wrote me a ticket, etc... he says he doesn't know why "they" would do that. I tell him that HE fitted me and he says we'll get it sorted out.

We do the fit again. He writes me a ticket for 20 dollars. I tell him that's crazy since he's just altered two pair of pants in places they didn't need work, and I'm not paying him to fix it. He goes back to the 20 for a waist explaination. We don't see eye-to-eye here so I agree to meet him halfway. I give him 10 dollars and cross my fingers (I honestly knew better than to leave clothes there this time - I just thought he "owed" me. Which I know is dumb since I paid him for a fix)

So how about batch number two? First pair are too tight at the waist. He's done the unthinkable (or is that expected?) and taken them in more than had been requested. I was almost certain the chalk marks were for a reason? Huh. Guess not. What about the second pair, you ask? He's let the legs out as per my request but conveniently neglected to touch the waist AT ALL. I study the pant for a sec looking for same mishappen stitching as my last pair and nothing. I try them on thinking maybe he decided to get fancy and match the thread work exactly... Nope. Not a thing.  And you know what? I'm not even mad. Not one bit. Because at least these jeans weren't ruined by the hands of Nelson. Expensive lesson learned. Don't say you haven't been warned.

I just wanted to say that Nelson and his crew continue to astound me with their excellent work.  I just picked up two pairs of pants he completely re-structured and a shirt he tapered for me and I am very pleased with the work.   And for this excellent work Nelson charged me $25 each pair of pants and $12 for the shirt.  I thought that was pretty great.

i tried a few tailors in the LES, and nelson tailor shop ended up being my go-to place for quality tailoring for an amazing price.  even after moving to boston, i wait to visit nyc and bring my clothes to nelson!  i recently took in a dress with complicated gathering to get it taken in.  they did it on the spot and it took half an hour at most.  it was perfect and they even pointed out that the original tailoring of one of the pockets was sewn wrong, and they fixed it!  had i gotten this work done elsewhere, it would have been at least $40, but at nelson it was only $15!!  this is pretty crazy for the work that they did.  the customer service is also fantastic and the guy helping me was quite charming :)

Nelson miraculously fixed a lot of my b's way-too-big suits. He is friendly and courteous, and really knows his stuff. Went in the heat of the summer, he saw me sweating balls on the bench, and offered me to sit in the back with the crew where the AC was. How nice of him!

I usually buy dresses and such that fit, but if I ever needed a dress or suit tailored, I would definitely come to him.

It's pretty quick too when trying stuff on. I mean sometimes he takes more than a week to alter and get the pieces back to you, but he's a busy guy and has a lot of business so you have to be patient with him. He did a great job on all my b's pieces and since my b doesn't Yelp, I am going to do it for him!

I wouldn't advise to call, because they probably won't pick up.

Added bonus, you could brunch at Essex, Clinton Street, Bondi Road which are all just blocks away!

There's not much more I can add...Nelson's awesome! He's the only tailor I'll go to. Out of the 30 or some items I've brought to him, for my husband and I, I have only been less than satisfied with two items.

One was a dress that I asked him to "skank up a bit," and he skanked it up a little too much, to where the hemline was acceptable for maybe a toddler. When he was pinning it, I kind of had an inkling it would be too short but like an idiot, I didn't say anything. So many of our problems with vendors would be solved if we would just speak up!!!

The other dress had a really strange hem and while the rest of the dress was perfect, the hem looked like a bubble dress gone terribly wrong.

All that being said, I live in the BRONX and I am more than willing to make the trek down to see Nelson (I do have a car, so it's not that bad, and there's usually parking right in front!). It's kind of a hole in the wall, but there best places usually are, no?

Thank you YELP for introducing me to this fabulous man!

You know, I read all these varying reviews so I was apprehensive about dropping off my suit for an overhaul.

It was a 2 piece skirt suit, the skirt had to be taken in from a size 4 to a size 1 and the jacket from a 6 to a 1.  This wasn't just a regular suit, it had lots of darting for a good fit and was made of delicate material that could easily pucker.  Even though I wasn't sure, I didn't have many options and took the leap with Nelson.

Let me tell you, Nelson is a GENIUS!  He did such a great job taking in my suit that I will definitely be back and trust him with other pieces.

I want to say his work wasn't exactly cheap but, was definitely 100% satisfied with what I got.  An alteration at a store or the local dry cleaners might have been more and probably not as well done.  Will def be back for stuff that needs a huge overhaul.  Others in the area may charge less but, Nelson is awesome.

The only con is his 6pm closing time.  Doesn't leave much room for those of us that work late.

I needed to get two suit jackets tailored because they looked big on me.  I looked up nelson on Yelp and decided to go with him.  I was a little reluctant but, I decided to go with him.  The shop isn't the easiest to get to, but once I got there everything was a piece of cake.  Nelson is a stand up guy and is very helpful.  He got my two jackets to fit great.  I am not sure if I was charged a great price but for two jackets it was $140.  nelson is so good I am going back today with two more suits

Nelson is the man! If you (like me) have items wasting valuable closet space, serving no function other than collecting dust b/c they don't fit right.. these articles of clothing that may look great on the hanger, but are missing the fitting-flattering factor? However, something unconsciously is forbidding you from re-gifting, hand-me-downing, g'willing, buffxchaging (whatever disposal method you prefer).

Why do we hold on to such useless items? Do we think we are going to wake up and suddenly these unfitting items will magically transform into a piece of perfection conforming to our figures??

Of course not, that would be silly talk! We hold on to these dust bunnies for talented tailors to save the life worthy of living in these garments!

When I was in the packing process to move x*country (SD to NYC) - I was gracefully binging, donating, or selling almost every tangible item I had to rid the shiza schlepped w/ me to the East Coast.

Point being, I came soooooo close to saying ~effit~ w/ these awkward fitting suits, blazers, jackets, slacks...

Boyo-boy, am so glad that lil' voice said - "No Megan, not these... they will be worth holding on to.."

And they were! Nelson works magic! I would have had to spend a fortune to buy new suits etc... Dinero Down the Drain... Dunzo!

But thanks to fellow YELPers &  Nelson's unique clothing craftsmanship I now have 3 sharp, perfectly fitting suits, 2 jackets. Also, my boyfriend had alterations done on a blazer, slacks, jeans, button down shirts  etc.

We are both grateful to have a tailor we can trust with our alteration needs!

side note -

there are a couple other people working on alterations, but in essence Nelson really is  a one-man-band. Keep in minds eye before randomly walking in the shop expecting expedient service.
....................................
It would be like going to Trader Joe's in Union Square on a Sat/Sun afternoon, and getting upset the line started when you walked in the door... capiche???
....................................
Might want to call ahead to find out a good time...

Also, ladies (& modest men) there is only ONE dressing room, and is not very Private.. no matter how hard I tried to stretch the sides to seal the gap, the drapery seemed a couple inches short on either side. Just an fyi  as it is in the entrance of the shop when picking out your underwear, may want to select something you feel comfortable or that is appropriate if a street-comber caught a peak... It is not a open forum by any means, just a heads-up not to expect a private dressing room suite ;)

The first day I wore skinny jeans, with thick snowboard socks, and bulky boots (freezing day) - the tight ankles with a ltd.  4" circumference did not make for the most convenient wardrobe change. Poor decision maker - reminded me of going to get a pedicure with tennis shoes... stupid (maybe not in NYC b/c sandals cannot be worn in the winter, but in SD... I would scold myself for unacceptable behavior :o)

Any who, when I returned to Nelson's knowing I had tons of pants to try on, I learned from my experience of indecent exposure combined with my inconveniently binding clothes to be  better prepared! Returning as a seasoned VET, I wore thin leggings enabling me to expediently slip in-n-out of suit, confirming fit without hogging time in the dressing room!

...other than that, enjoy the corny collage of dated magazine clippings of women in swimsuits... random... but if it helps Nelson do good work, I'm in full support :o)

Terrible work.

I had a bridesmaid dress that required a good amount of taking in.  All they did was pin one tiny section near the neckline and that was it.  No measuring, no gauging of where the dress ought to sit upon the waist etc.  The result was something that totally destroyed the original shape of the dress.

Workmanship was also awful, plenty of frayed ends and slipshot tacking here and there.

I would never go back to them.

Addiction: scouring eBay for awesome vintage finds at low, low prices
Problem: super cute dresses hang in my closet unworn for months because dresses=too big and I=too small
Solution: read Yelp, find Nelson, and get two dresses taken in a ton for $11 each (I actually shrieked, "WHAT?!?!?!" when he told me the price cause I couldn't believe how cheap it was)

So if you see a gal walking down the street wearing a KILLER vintage dress and a satisfied expression, it's totally me.  You should high-five me, no questions asked.

How cheap am I? So cheap that I shlep all the way to Nelson's even though it is in no way convenient for me.

Pants that were too long are now shorter and no one can tell but me. All of that for less than five bucks a pair? Amazing!

Needed the sleeves on my fall jacket shortened. Because of the raving reviews, I gave Nelson's a shot. Went on a Monday morning and once there, I waited about 20 minutes while a young lady, who spoke no Spanish, tried communicating with a man (not Nelson) who spoke no English. Apparently she was there to pick up a garment that was supposed to be ready and hadn't been touched. Anyway, this scene provided me with some entertainment as I waited my turn. I was able to convey that I wanted my jacket sleeves shortened with my very weak and broken Spanish but thankfully, an english speaking employee came into the shop while I was there and I felt confident that my jacket was good hands. Four days passed and I went to pick up my jacket. I tried it on and the sleeves seemed a little too short. I raised my arms and the sleeves crawled up my arm to the middle of my forearm. Nelson was there working on a garment. He looked at me working with my jacket and quickly said "everything's ok right? perfect right?" I replied "i guess it's ok, but I wouldn't say perfect." He ignored my comment and continued working. Overall, I guess the people were nice enough, but as the price was about the same as any other tailor shop ($25), I wish I had gone someplace closer to home (Brooklyn). I believe I could have gotten the same or better results for the same price.

I went here on the recommendation of Yelp and a friend, where the majority were good reviews.
Maybe I was the exception, but this is what happened
I gave him 3 pairs of jeans to taper and hem, went to pick it up 3 days later when it was ready, i tried all of them on, perfectly good, the fit was just how i wanted, and the hem was original just like i asked, i paid him 25 a pair (i dont know much about pricing), i got home, wore each jean ONCE outside, out of the three, TWO of the jeans started coming loose where he sewed it to taper, so now i have two jeans that have holes where the stitching has come loose, im afraid to wear the third one out for fear that it'll unravel as i walk

the original hem is perfect, couldnt ask for a better job
the sizing was perfect also

im no expert but i'm pretty sure threads are supposed to stay in tact after you sew them on, especially when the job was just finished, i was hoping he'd be good since hes only a 10-15 minute walk from where i live

i'll be looking for other tailors now

I am a sucker for sample sales. I don't think I've ever met a sale I didn't like. As such, I have a tendency to buy beautiful garments that fit me almost-perfectly, and this is why Nelson is a godsend.

The $285 pants I bought for just $65 were way too long and just a little looser than I wanted around the waist. I had brought shoes with me to try on while he fitted me, but managed to leave the bag in the subway and didn't realize it until I was trying on the pants to show Nelson. He eyeballed me and asked how high my heels were. I told him about 2 1/2 inches, and he said ok. I asked him to take the waist in a little on each side, and he didn't even use pins, just told me to come back on Monday (it was a Saturday). Waist and hems: $15. I picked up the pants and they were about half an inch too short with the heels, and when I took them back, he lengthened them for free.

My boyfriend bought a new skinny suit, but it wasn't quite skinny enough. He had the jacket and the arms taken in for $35 and it is a perfect fit.

People walk in and out of this unassuming shop with Barney's garment bags. They trust him to make their clothes look good. You should, too.

I went to Nelson's after reading the reviews off YELP.  I was in desperate need of having a bridesmaids dress tailored.  I took it into the shop and got "pinned" and measured.  I told him exactly what a wanted and how the dress should fit.

When I went to pick up the dress, I tried it on and could not get it zipped.  After several attempts the dress zipped up, but I felt like I was in sausage casing.  It was not flattering at all.  It was late at night and the man helping me kept saying, "oh, it will work fine."  I kept making comments about how I could barely breathe or move in the dress.  I took the dress home as I was leaving to go out of town the next day.

I called the store when I returned from my trip and told them that they needed to do something to fix this situation... that the dress is two sizes too small (it was one size too big).  The employee said it was not a problem to come back in.  He was super friendly to me about me bringing the dress back in.  The only problem is that once the material is cut it's *GONE*.  Fortunately, he found about 1.5" to let it out, but it was still extremely tight.  Also, the hem was noticeably shitty and you could see holes where it was sewed before.

Thank goodness for the food poisoning I had two days before the wedding.  That was my only saving grace of getting into that dress.

Thanks Nelson for making me look and feel like stuffed sausage at my friend's wedding.

The only reason I gave two stars was because staff was extremely friendly, didn't charge to fix the dress (although I would have screamed if they did) and they had a quick turn-around.

Oh Nelson's!  You are so worth the walk.

So, I live in Brooklyn and I have recently been searching for jobs, which is actually what led me to Nelson's.  Let me demystify: since I am potentially leaving the small business world, I had to buy my first suit in, well, in a while.  Being a skinny man, I need to have everything practically reconstructed.  I had an interview fast approaching and needed some alterations STAT.  I had tried the dry cleaners in my neighborhood for pants alterations one time and they came back pretty mangled, so I set to work on Yelp to find something reliable and came up with Nelson's.  Based on the other reviews, I schlepped a bunch of pants and shirts down along with the suit.

Right off, the place has a great vibe.  The 'hot chicks' posters in the changing area are a little cheeky, but non-offensive.  It seems like a family operation and there is a lot of pride that goes along with that, which is apparent and welcomed.  Nelson (I'll go out on a limb and assume that is him) was finishing up with another client, but acknowledged me and was appropriately brisk.

Once we got to work trying things on an discussing the alterations, Nelson was really helpful in being clear about what certain sutures would mean for the overall look of the garment.  I explained that I had an interview coming up and needed some things faster that others.  He was totally cool with writing out separate tickets to facilitate that.

Over the next week, as I picked things up, I grew more and more pleased.  In addition to doing a pretty good dry clean, all of the hems and alterations were really crisp and well done; no snags, ugly threads, etc.  PLUS it was totally affordable to have a TON of stuff done.  For four pairs of pants altered (waist and length) and many shirts + sweaters cleaned it all came in at less than $80.

The only thing Nelson couldn't do is get me the job.

this is my first non-food related review! Maybe I'm not a huge glutton...nah...

anyways, I, too, went to Nelson's after reading reviews on Yelp and was not disappointed AT ALL.

A few weeks back, I was on a trip and fell for the "cheap suits" gimmick in Hong Kong. I basically ended up bringing back a suit which was fitted too large and seemed to have awkward shoulders. I didn't know if the suit could be saved. Then, I found Nelson's tailor shop. He initially quoted $75 to take in the sides and do a little work on the sleeves. When I came back, he mentioned that he found that the shoulder pads were incorrectly mounted inside the suit which was what gave the awkward look and corrected it for free!

The end result was a jacket that looked brand new and fit perfectly. Real quality work for really decent prices. I'll definitely be going back even though I live all the way out in Queens.

I brought in an off-the-rack suit for fitting. I am pretty particular, and it was a $1200 suit, so I was worried about trusting it with anyone. Quick, friendly fitting, and I get it back a week later. $82 bucks. Not super super cheap, but the results were well worth it. I wanted functional sleeve cuffs on the jacket (surgeon's cuffs), and he prepped them for button placement for free, something he could have rightfully charged another $30 for [there are few places that can actually make the button holes -- One being Jonathan's Embroidery on 38th]. Everything fit perfectly, everything looks good. Happy with the results. I will go again when I need anything tailored.

I went to Nelson based on the reviews I read here... and I'm so glad I did!

I brought in a vintage sundress that was far, far too long.  Nelson looked nonplussed and sent me to try it on in the tiny booth at the front of the store. Whoever mentioned privacy in their review was right-- I could basically see the goings-on on Rivington Street as I changed. I didn't mind, but someone else might, so take that into consideration.  Also the booth is filled with sexy pictures of ladies. Amazing.

Ten dollars and an hour later, I had a newly-knee-length dress and was very, very pleased.  Nelson is fabulous!

I bought a leather jacket two years ago and have never worn it because the sleeves were too long. I know nothing about tailors and I was concerned about finding someone who would do a good job taking in the sleeves because the leather was thick and heavy. I found Nelson Tailor on Yelp, and they did a bang up job. The sleeves looked like they had been manufactured at the new length rather than tailored, and, even better, they had the jacket ready two hours after I dropped it off all for a reasonable price. I was very pleased and wished I had come sooner. Going to wear it tonight!

Thanks, Yelpers, for directing me to Nelson!  What a great find.  I had to have a cocktail dress taken in.  There was a complicated design on the top, so other tailors wanted to charge me half of what I paid for the dress.  Nelson managed to work with it and only cost $45.  Try to go at an off-peak time, if possible.  I went on a Saturday afternoon and had to wait in line for about 45 mins.  It was worth it, though.

Nelson is the BEST! After moving in East Village my girlfriend & I needed some suits tailored for job interviews and found him on Yelp. In just 2 weeks she had 3 suits, 3 jackets, a dress and 2 pair of pants that fit perfect. I had 2 suits, 5 shirts, 1 coat and they all fit perfect. We both had the opportunity to try on everything and he never changes to make an extra alterations. He gives you a quotes and sticks to it until you are happy with the garment. He has one changing room w/some awesome magazine pages of girls in bikini's and some local NY male rapers:-) It's a small place, but will definitely make the trek from Chinatown for anything else we need tailored. Highly recommend!

I've been looking for a good tailor for a long time now and my search is finally over.  Nelson is the best.  Just call to make sure he's there because I think the other workers only speak Spanish.

So far I had the following done here(for an idea of pricing):
tuxedo jacket - taken in, tapered and shortened $50
tuxedo shirt - taken in, tapered, and arms taken in $15

tuxedo pants - original hem
jeans - tapered the legs and original hem
dress pants - regular hem
total = $39

Also they work fast.  I dropped off my 3 pair  of pants on Wednesday and they were ready on Friday.  I've had jeans done before with the original bottoms but they never came out this perfect.  No one will ever know they were hemmed.  And my Tuxedo fits great now.  I just dropped off another blazer that bought on sale for $30 (original $178) wasn't my size but he's pretty much re-constructing the whole thing to fit me perfectly for $50...  So I'm getting a perfectly fitting $178 blazer for $80.  I'm slowing going to bring all my clothes that fit me loosely to Nelson's.  Everything looks so much better when it fits right.  It's like having a whole new wardrobe.

I'll never go anywhere else.

In brief:

Location:  Rivington (between Clinton and Ridge)
Price:  Cheap!  (~$2 for a regular hem, ~$10 for original hem)
Service:  Great and superfast (if it's a quick hemming, they can often do it while you wait)
Results:  Rarely a problem, but if there is an issue (i.e. pants not hemmed short enough), they fix it for free

Details:

My roommates and I were lucky that the first place we lived in was a block away from Nelson's.  It was extremely convenient as it was on the way to and from the subway.

Nelson's is cheap and fast.  If I go in with just one pair of pants, almost everytime they'll ask if I want to wait (10-30 minutes) for it.  When I lived in the LES, I usually refused and would just pick it up the next day.  However, after I moved to the Upper East Side, my roommate and I would still take our clothes there to be hemmed and instead of making 2 trips, we would hangout in the LES for an hour.

Besides jeans and trousers, I've also gotten a lined wool skirt (from the '70s?) taken in on the sides.  They are so cheap and good that after I moved back to SFand before I found Janet (see my review on "Expert Alterations" in SF), I used to bring clothes to NY to get altered when I visited.

This guy is good. He has fixed two vintage leather jackets for me. One was very old and coming loose at the seams; he resewed it. The other was way, way, way too big. It fits absolutely perfect now. His prices are great for the job. Resewing a leather jacket anywhere else would have cost me hundreds. Here it wasn't over fifty, and it's just as good as anywhere else, if not better.

came here back in Oct for alterations on a way to big bridesmaid dress. for some reason my friend ordered me 2 sizes too big so not only did he have to take in the length and the straps, but also the sides - I knew this was going to be expensive so I thought maybe taking it upstate to my moms would be cheaper, wrong, they were trying to charge me $100+, WACK! so I went to good ol yelp and found Nelson's who only charged me about $65-75 and I got it back in a week. he did a great job. I wish he was closer to me bc I would go to him more often bc I am always tailoring my clothes bc im short :-(

I got a last minute job where i needed black pants and the ones I found had ridiculously long pant legs so saturday morning i took them to Nelson's and they hemmed them in less than 40 minutes!  They look great and they charged me under $5.  I was able to wear my pants to the job and all was well in my East Village paradise.

"It is very important that you look at yourself in the mirror to see how your jacket looks now versus how it will look after I finish with it" - Nelson to me before he altered my suit jacket.

I read all of the wonderful reviews of Nelson and decided to stop by his place to take in a suit even though it was totally out of my way.  Boy am I glad that I did!  He is a magician on clothes!  I am a pretty slim guy with long, thin arms, and I had bought a suit off the rack which I enjoyed, but which really did not fit my frame.  It hung loose and the sleeves were far too large for me.  I had gone to other tailors with the same problem, and all they did was just put in a few darts on the back to tighten up the jacket, but while the jacket would fit better, that method fails to create a proper silhouette and still leaves you looking boxy.  Nelson actually took apart the entire jacket and re-sewed it to create a tremendous fit on my body.  I have NEVER had a better fitting jacket, and I've had made-to-measure suits tailored for me in the past!  It was pricey ($125), but it was definitely worth it for all of the work Nelson did on my jacket.  Thanks Nelson, you were absolutely right about how important it was to look into the mirror and remember how I looked in the jacket before you made it fit me!

I went her to have my jeans hemmed. They fit you and check exactly how long you want the pant leg. A regular hem for jeans is $4 and they do it within 45 mins. Open on Saturday but not Sunday.

came here based on the perfect reviews about this tailor shop. i got a sports jacket sleeves hemmed and a pair of dior jeans hemmed and tapered. came back to pick up the clothes and the results were exactly as i wanted it to be. would definitely recommend to anyone needing alterations done. no excess fabric or threads whatsoever.
