I recently had a meeting with one of the recruiters here in July 2009. The office was nice, the staff were sweet as pie, and the recruiter spent extra time on our meeting, which I appreciated since I came all the way from Fremont. I think there is hope that maybe they will find something for me, however, I know that I can't put all my eggs in one basket. The recruiters are there to help assist in finding a job - it doesn't necessarily mean they are required to. It seems some of the reviewers are bashing this place. Realize that [YOU] yourself have to be looking too. At any rate, I look forward to working with them in the future. Only time will tell.

4 stars because they were awesome on all other levels
-1 star because I want to see how long it will take for them to find a position (if any) to place me in

I was one of the temps with this staffing agency and from what I remember they are liars. My recruiter told me that they had a lot of clerical assignments when I registered with them. After I constatnly call in week afte week for ny availability, my recruiter keeps telling me Sorry nothing at this week. You are on  the right track . check in with us next week. Duh! I knew that I have to check in with them every week or else my recruiter  will think  that I found a job. I was only placed 2 times out of the  months I was with them.

one of the assignments I didn't even finish because the company told me that she would do data entry herself. After I was told to leave by this client, I never received another assignment ever again. It isn't my fault that the company only wanted one temp and they have the nerve to blame it on the temp if their clients don't want you back.

So, stay away from  this place.

Nelson is my favorite staffing agency. Although past management may have left something to desire the current staff is the best I've worked with in the business, and I've worked with many staffing agency's. They really cared about finding a job that fit with my qualifications and current employment needs. They also have some great accounts like Marc Jacobs and Blue Shield of California. My staffing agent Nicole, who is fairly new but has allot of experience working for other staffing agency's is not only professional but an all around nice person to work with. Working with an agency whether looking for Temp or Permanent positions can be difficult and I have found them to be exceptionally considerate to my needs.
P.S. Daniel L. I've read your review and have never been asked to submit to a blood drug test or credit check.

Don't bother with Nelson Staffing. I posted my resume on http://Monster.com and they contacted me, saying they could find me a job. I went in, took all those demeaning and boring tests, and then met with my representative. After all of that, she told me it would be very difficult to find me a job because of my lack of experience. Why didn't you tell me this BEFORE I came in, then, instead of upright lying and telling me you could help me? They probably didn't even look at my resume before I came in. Needless to say, I never heard from them again.

A complete and utter waste of time.

Nelson Staffing insists --- even *before* you talk to a recruiter -- to authorize them to consent to random blood tests for drug usage!  Not urine, but blood samples - not even the California Department of Corrections demands that from its parolees.

Also, credit checks.  Not just prior to getting hired for a permanent job, but *before* you even get to see anyone.

Do NOT sign your rights away at this farce of an agency!  Or bring your lawyer!

03/11/2009 update -- the branch manager emails me to call me a liar:

She is emailing me about this review which I posted on 10/09/2006 - a mere 1.5 years ago.

Daniel,

My name is Cynthia Lyons and I am the Branch Manager in the San Francisco office.  I appreciate your feedback [sic] however [sic], I just wanted to contact you to let you know your information is inaccurate.

Background checks are occassionaly [sic] needed should at the clients [sic] request, but beyond that your statements are false.

Thank you
Cynthia Lyons

You tell me that my statements are false.  My statements are based on personal experience with that sorry excuse of an outfit that passes for a placement agency.

Your reading comprehension (as well as grammar and spelling skills) also leave a lot to be desired -- I mentioned nothing about background checks.

Obviously, you also do not know jack about proofreading your own messages.

The fact that you find it necessary to attack someone who posts a negative review is a pathetic personality trait and reflects a complete lack of professionalism.  It is, however, worth noting that quite a number of readers of my review found it useful.

Deal with it.

===========

And so now you blocked me on Yelp -- so sad, so tragic, so pathetic!

But you'll be delighted to know that I have updated my review of you on Yelp as follows:

03/11/2009 update -- the branch manager emails me to call me a liar:

She is emailing me about this review which I posted on 10/09/2006 - a mere 1.5 years ago.

First, she was not there.

Second, I was definitely advised that I would have to go through blood-based drug screen before even sitting down with a recruiter to go over my resume and any job opportunities.

The mere fact that Nelson Staffing has eight (8!) out of 10 1-star reviews speaks for itself.

The reception staff in the SF office were so nice.  They  were cheerful and made me feel comfortable.  They were very kind about all my stupid "I haven't done this in a while" questions.

I've had very good results with Nelson in the past.  I've used their staffing offices in Marin and Santa Rosa and found amazing permanent jobs that way.

The SF recruiters, however, struck me as a bunch of unprofessional idiots.  They seemed to have no interest in my actual skill-set.  They did not care about what I was looking for or what I could do.  When they did call me with a position, it was usually something for which I was greatly overqualified or the position was sadly underpaid.

I did go on one interview and it was a disaster.   The position was not what I had been told.  Nor was I what the hiring manager was expecting.  We were both annoyed that Nelson had wasted our time.  I called Nelson and left a message explaining the situation and requested a call back.  I never got a return phone call.

They consistently offered me entry level positions, which was not what I'd applied for.   They routinely send out generic emails listing positions that may or may not have anything to do with the candidates skills or availability.  Now that I have a "real" job, I've asked them several times to remove me from the mailing list and they can't seem to figure out how to do it.

I think if I was just looking for something to do betwen semesters or if I was fresh from school, Nelson might be all right.  It is not, however, an agency for someone who is an adult, a professional, and an experienced employee.

The single star is for the girls at the front desk.

I work for Nelson Staffing and after having worked at other agencies found that the caliber of candidate is superior in terms of professionalism and enthusiasm for finding a job. Internally the (new) management and team is awesome. I know that the reviews in the past talk about people who have been long gone, but I would definitely give Nelson a chance if I were on the job market, especially because we work with some of the leading Bay Area companies!!!

Although I do not work for Nelson, I have always worked for their direct competitors and I do know they have the best clients! I have always heard great things about them in our SF market and have referred numerous friends that are either looking for work or looking to hire, because they are great on both sides! The second that I have a chance to work with them I will be on it, fortunately I have never been unemployed :)

Nelson used to be great. I went there in fall 2005 right after I moved to the city. I was fresh out of college with no serious work experience and no clue as to how to write a résumé. At that time, a charmingly melancholy yet perfectly competent Peter worked the front desk. My first interview was a tag-team event with Sunday (that's her name) and David L. They obviously had a ton of business to handle that day, but they still had time to sit down and do actual pen-and-paper editing on my résumé--something no recruiter has done for me since. And I've seen many.

Sunday was excellent at her job. She kept me working full-time most weeks for several months. Her phone calls for last-minute assignments came early enough for me to get to the job. She took note of the positive reviews I got from assignments and got me lots of repeats. She rarely needed to use email, since she worked the phone like a pro, but when she did email, it was always relevant to an assignment under consideration, and very timely.

Simply put, Sunday had it together. She was the dream recruiter.

Sadly, Sunday left after a few months, but David L. took up the torch, getting me regular work and always communicating. To David and Sunday, wherever you are: I paid my rent many a month thanks to your quick work.

Then David left, and it was downhill from there. A new recruiter showed up on the scene who really didn't seem to understand that a year's worth of positive reviews in the folder meant that I could actually be trusted to go out on assignment. Assignments dried up, and what scraps they did throw my way were at incompetently-run companies with unprofessional management. I began receiving those mass emails the other reviewers have mentioned. My calls were not taken and not returned. I even received an email once addressed to someone else, regarding a matter I'd never heard of. It was all very irritating, and not remotely lucrative.

Thank goodness I finally landed a permanent position on my own soon after that. I had to ask more than once, however, to stop receiving those mass emails.

Do yourself a favor...NEVER, and I do mean never, use this staffing agency.  They're as bad or worse than Smith Hampton & Devlin!  It's a total cattle-call with no follow-up from any of reps for any real jobs.  You're better off applying directly to the hiring firms and cutting out the middle man!

I wish I could say something nice about them. I had a pleasant interview, if vague, and an automated skills assessment. The interviewer didn't seem especially interested in working with me, and didn't ask many questions. She also said that their company doesn't often work in my field of work, although she did state that she would try to find placement. The office staff neglected to ask for needed paperwork, and when I called back to ask what was needed, I was put on hold, then the call disconnected. Sometimes the reception staff answered with "Yes?" instead of speaking the name of the company, and disconnections were common. My rep never called back and never answered two emails.

I have mixed feelings about this agency and I have worked for several agencies in the past. Actually my gut feeling insists on recommending everyone..RUN, SAFE YOURSELVES..

Generally getting work through a good agency is not that difficult. You send your resume, they invite you in, they test you, they place you, they keep in touch and if you don't like the position they'll work with you to find you something else. Sounds like something a good agency would do, right? Well, not Nelson..

The scenarion went something like this, they wow you (resume is stellar, excellent candiate..blah blah blah), they place you as a receptionist (WTF?)...even tho they promised you that supervisor position, you complain, your supervisor will say they did anything they could do for you and you should be thankful they even got the job..if you dig deeper and try to go above to speak with management...they'll drop you..

This agency does not know how to resolve a conflict properly, very poor management.

My past agencies I'm still in touch with and they still run job prospects by me even if I'm working somewhere. The same can not be said of Nelson.

Insist on everything in writing, it's in your own best interest. I've never seen such an unprofessional staffing agency.

I have worked with the Menlo Park office, so I cannot comment on the SF since I have not worked with them.

The first time I worked with the Menlo Park office was in the early 90's.  I would say that they kept me working.  Then I found a F/T job.  I did not need them again until 2002. This time I was not so fornuate because I had not been working as an admin for awhile. So, I bailed.  Then I tried again in 2006.  After a couple of months, my recruiter left with out mentioning it.  So, I went in to meet another one.  Once I got there they could not find my file.  And then had the gaul to blame me that I never came in.  Not cool!  So that was the last straw!

I got two jobs from Nelson Staffing Solutions. I thank them for helping me to get my first paid post college job experience that wasn't food service or retail. They came through for me and got me working. First, I was a receptionist for them, and then they led me to my current job as a receptionist elsewhere.

Already - Twice I've asked for the services and support of this fantastic staffing firm. I've been assinged to the most well known and respected companies needing my presentation, experience and work attitude at their request. I keep in close contact with the front desk and the agents that assign me to employers. I've had several employers ask for my services over and over. Just a few respected companies are; Carat Fusion, Cornish & Carey Real Estate, Lucas Films Ltd., Pacific Maritime Association, St. Francis Memorial Hospital and so on. Thank you Nelson Staffing Team!

my friend j and i both sent our resumes to nelson.  our resumes are different. yet all either of us got was random automated emails that go out every so often with jobs that have nothing to do with us. we both get the same ones. and they are for things that clearly state i wouldnt be qualified. i never got a call to come in to talk to anyone.  i even applied to one of those random jobs once and they never contacted me.  dont go here.
