Park La Brea, CA
Here is my long overdue review.
Okay so I purchased the Yelp Deal for the facial..... Honestly, I was terrified. My last facial (at another salon) ended with me looking as though I had a failed attempt at climbing Mt. Everest. The burn, and chaffing of my skin remained for a good month, and left me never wanting another facial. I'm glad two years later, while I was sleep deprived I decided to randomly buy the yelp deal, and even more pleased that 6 months later I decided to use it.
Everyone thinks they have sensitive skin, but I truly have super sensitive skin. I explained this to my esthetician and service provider of the day Lexi. She actually listened, thought, and then, I have to say.... she proceeded to give me the best facial of my life thus far.
My main objective was extractions and she put in a massive effort that left my skin free of even the tiniest of blackheads. I assured her that if I left looking a little beat up, that was okay as long as we got the job done. I mean after all, you extract at home and its not like your face doesn't show that you have for a half hour or so. Why would anyone expect otherwise? The thing is, I didn't leave looking beat up and she still got the job done. As a matter of fact, I left blackhead free, soft, and dewy, which is a feat with my ultra dry, super fair complexion. On top of that she was able to educate me on skin, she knows what she's talking about, she actually studies this stuff, she's not just rubbing your face with nice feeling/smelling product.
The room was clean and relaxing. The salon on the whole was busy and had a fun vibe, but Lexi sold the deal, and my experience. She managed to make me relax which is not easy (I'm so type A its silly), and I was able to enjoy being pampered. I read some of these reviews and people are so quick to complain, so unappreciative of the fact that someone is literally catering to them, sure you pay... but do you think its easy to dote on a stranger and give your best effort to make them lovely, or full, or whatever the service provided is.
So the pre-facial consultation was great and effective, the actual facial was productive and luxurious, but nothing was lost on the post facial consultation. Lexi gave me a regiemen that I have admittedly not followed which is why I need to go see her again soon, and she recommended a couple of options for me with out trying to get me to spend a fortune on the entire line they carry. But........ she recommended a product to me that I have been using for only one day (my facial was 2 months ago) and I woke up this morning and could not believe my face! I'm about to buy it for every woman on my gift list. So not going to tell you what it is, but I bet Lexi would.
Yes, you will have to drive downtown if you don't already live or work there, and no parking isn't a dream, but you should definetly go ahead and get yourself there somehow if you are in need.
Lexi if you are reading this... 1. Thank you again. 2. I will see you soon. and, 3. If you should have a sudden boost in clients due to my review I hope and pray that you will still be able to fit me in your schedule.

I've been in here twice now and I don't think I'm going to come in again. It's not because of the stylist. She was nice enough and skilled enough. The problem that I have with this place is the chairs.
I find those salon chairs incredible uncomfortable. I'd rather have a bad haircut than have back problems. If they replace those chairs then I might come back in again. Otherwise I will go elsewhere. -

Made a last minute appointment to go in for a playboy wax and a blowout. Am new to LA so as i'm sure you ladies know, it always requires some looking around before you find 'your' new salon. I think i lucked out because I don't think i'll be looking any further :-)
My wax was done by a very kind Russian young lady, for someone that has been waxing for years I was pleasantly surprised with how efficient and quick she was trying her best to keep it as pain free as possible. Will stick with her for waxing for sure.
I then moved on to the salon part with my glass of wine (makes everything a lot better when you're waiting:). Elauq did my hair and was great to chat with and knowledgeable of afro-american hair types. I was pleasantly surprised to see 2 black hair stylists in this salon. My hair looked AMAZING and i will definitely be back to see her! I was so appreciative that she was willing to see me last minute on NYE!
I was charged $70 for a wash, blowout, flat ironing and style which I found a bit steep considering you still have to tip on top of that, so I will make sure to get a good overview of her prices next time so I am prepared. On this occasion I was just happy I did not look like a crazy person on NYE.
Overall, GO THERE!! You won't be disappointed. -

I've been to Lexi a couple of times now and I am struck by a few things:
1. She is incredibly informative, really gives you useful information about your skin and how to address issues you may be having. With me it's acne, redness, and dryness. I mean like I literally found myself thinking, jesus christ I'm not going to be able to remember all of this. That is a GOOD THING, considering that it's genuinely helpful and most facialists are pretty happy to do their extractions, put some lotion on you and call it a day.
2. She is SUPER friendly, and not like obnoxiously friendly, she's genuinely funny and interesting friendly. She's easy to have a conversation with and seems to really want to lend people a hand with whatever skin issues they are having.
3. She is very price conscious and will give you an honest rundown of what she thinks about products, their price and how they relate to one another quality wise.
4. She told me something about my face that I had kind of always suspected, that it is both oily and water dry, and that I should focus on getting a moisturizer that addresses those issues.
Anyways! She's down to earth, fun, and really knowledgeable. The facility is really nice, and you can get a free Diet Coke while you wait, if you're waiting at all (which I haven't yet). -

This was no doubt the worst experience going to any hair salon in L.A. I was recommended by a friend, went in to go from blonde to a nice ombre. The girl told me it was going to be 100$ per hour so she referred me to another stylist so I just said alright I'll just make it easy i didn't want to spend that much and make it an all over brown.. FORGETTING to mention that she also charged 100$ per hour because it was going to be a corrective color apparently without telling me any of this all said in done they charged me 250$ just for the color.. Did nothing special, slobbed some color on my hair it looks fine but it was nothing amazing.. not to mention afterwards I went to yet another girl at the same salon because they weren't very organized to begin with but anyhow she ended up CUTTING my hair at least 3 inches not trimming.. At the end I wasn't completely satisfied but I was left in the dark about price so I go to pay and its 340$.. ridiculous. So I have a melt down and was completely confused as to why it was this much. It was no color correction I specifically told them I didn't want to spend that much. None of the girls who worked on my hair were in sight. The manager was on the phone with me telling me if I didn't pay they would sit me in the chair and strip my hair back to the blonde it was.. I still paid, and tipped.. LIKE AN IDIOT, and got no thank you, anything. THE WORST SALON EXPERIENCE EVER. Just because the salon looks cute and chic doesn't mean anything, I hate this place.

I was in Los Angeles for work and decided to treat myself to a day of pampering, including a haircut and dye job. Here is how Neihile got it right:
- I had a bikini wax, a facial, a haircut and dye, a pedicure and a gel manicure.
- They took me in for all my appointments even though I booked that very morning
- Lexie was great at the wax and facial. She kept conversing with me making sure I was comfortable the whole time. She took her time and care with everything and made me feel like I was her only appointment that day.
- Courtney did my hair and she too was nothing if not a professional. We spent a good 10 minutes discussing what I wanted done to my hair. I walked in with a single process dark brown haircolor from out of a box and walked out with golden highlights and brown toner that looked so natural. It has been six weeks and my hair still looks great.
They are expensive but they are worth it because they take their time with you and make sure they get it right.
I plan to write another review for the nail salon under their listing. I unfortunately did not have such a great experience there. -

As the spawn of an old-school cosmetologist, I am not used to salons. Mom has been cutting and highlighting me all my life. Unfortunately for my roots and other impulsive hair needs (blow outs, Friday night decisions to cut bangs, etc.) the fact I have big girl responsibilities and she is 150 miles away means I need a "plan b."
I am a fan of the tanning/nail salon so I figured I'd give this place a try (only been to a handful of salons in my life). Ended up with Courtney taking me with little warning on a Friday night to give my highlights a little refreshing and cut some bangs. I thought she was fabulous - very professional, nice, knowledgeable. Not to mention she did a great job. I got a "mini partial" highlight job and I thought it might have been A LITTLE pricey, but the prices are on the site so I knew what I was getting myself into. I don't think it was excessive - just not a bargain. (Granted this is coming from girl who rarely pays to get her hair done). I don't know about you, but I don't want "bargain" hair styling anyway - if I had a super power it would have something to do with my hair and you don't want to mess with that.
The salon itself is nice - I really like the old building, the big chandelier, white floors. SO GLAMOROUS, and so LA. I plan on coming back. -

Amazing space. Laurie did my facial and made me feel relaxed. My only complaint is about parking. For their rates, they should offer something for free or at least reduced.

The pictures are a bit misleading, the salon is a bit rougher around the edges than the shiny photos will lead you to believe. Maybe I was there on a rough day, but it was less Apple and more PC.
I received a facial via my Yelp deal. I went into the room and let them know that I have very sensitive skin. No one ever believes me and I don't know why. Within seconds of getting near the steam, I turned bright red. Add all of their productions and extractions and I'm fuchsia. Awesome, now I have to go out in public looking like Samantha post chemical peel. And I don't even get the benefits of a chemical peel!!! The esthetician seemed to know what she was talking about in terms of products, but I was not super pleased with the end result or the fact that I was charged another $20 on top of what I had already paid for the deal (they wouldn't budget on that one for no reason). -

Was in need of a manicure so decided to try since I work 1 block away...big regret/mistake.
Simply put, worst manicure I have ever had done. My nails bubbled, they don't even have a clue how to put on nail polish, had to go back and have redone, still looks awful. When I went back they actually said they were busy and asked me to come back 30 min later, so in all 3 trips it took, and still effed up.
40 years I'vd had manicures, never anything that resembled this bad, or lack of, execution and skill. -

This review is for Whitney. She was super nice and did a great job with my hair. I work in downtown and have been looking for a good hairstylist nearby with little luck. After reading the amazing reviews on yelp, I thought I'll give it a shot. Whitney did not disappoint. The best part of the entire experience was the scalp massage along with the shampoo...She treats your hair so gently and I was amazed at the results, She was super friendly and gave me good advice about maintaining the style.
Overall, it's a clean salon and pretty trendy. I would not give it 5 stars for 2 reasons: first, it is a bit pricey. The haircut (without tip) cost me $90, so it definitely on the more expensive side. Second, the receptionist can be a bit snobbish and is not really friendly. I waited for 20 minutes even though I had an appointment and no one apologized or explained why the stylist was running late. When I went to ask why it is taking so long after waiting for 20 min, the woman at the front desk was indifferent and told me I just have to wait. I almost gave up on the salon and was about to leave till Whitney showed up and apologized. She did such a good job that it made the wait worth it. Overall, the haircut and the friendliness of the stylist what makes this a great salon choice. -

I went in for a facial on my day off. The place itself looks worn and tired. The gloss of all white is dated and tired. But I had a great facial that was very relaxing. Neihule is a hard name to remember and say, so it's difficult to recommend it to friends.

the only con is that the name is so freak'n hard to remember and spell!!!
Natashia is great for waxing - 1st. she's just beautiful and makes you think... "hey, she looks that great, she must know a thing or two about making me look great too!" And she does. The salon uses a combination of hard and soft waxes with teatree oil as an after treatment. Natashia is fast, efficient and knowledgeable about her business and pleasant to boot.
Danielle - great stylist. Funny and knowledgeable about the cuts, styles and easy to bounce ideas off of.
The salon - pristine. Convenient downtown location. I love that they offer refreshments while you wait. Also nice spread of accessories to satisfy the window shopper in you. -

This review is for The Neihule Signature (Cleanse, Exfoliate, Rehydrate with Enzyme Mask) which is typically $100 (but I used my Yelp voucher that I bought for $49).
This treatment reminded me of why I don't like going to swanky salons where I feel my money is going towards the decor and not a good service. I prefer getting quality services priced reasonably rather than paying for a crappy service at a nice looking salon.
I believe that some facials are not worth the money because the aesthetician doesn't leave the products (especially moisturizers) on long enough for it work their magic. I thought it lame that this salon charges extra just for extractions. I have oily skin. I need extractions so I need facials that actually purge my dirty face. Paying someone $$$ just to rub fancy products on then quickly rub it off is a waste of my time and money. I need my pores purged. I also didn't care for the toners being sprayed onto my face. It made me feel like I was snorting toner. Do I really need toner sprayed all over my face, especially my delicate eye area? I prefer toner put on a cotton ball and then swabbed onto my face.
The facial massage was interesting. The aesthetician whipped out some weird facial massage moves I've never experienced before (like her vibrating hands while rubbing them across my face trick). But really. I get facials to get some deep cleansing not a face rub. So the facial massage was interesting, but really not my thing. The aesthetician was nice (I think her name was Natalia) and pretty. Her face was so flawless it reminds me of what could happen if I actually take better care of my face. For that, I'll have to try another salon that actually deep cleanses my face during their signature facials.
I gave this place 2 stars because, "Meh. I've experience better." For what Neihule typically charges for the Signature Facial--they should include extractions. Don't just spend the hour rubbing/removing random stuff on people's face. My face didn't even feel clean salon clean after the facial treatment. I could have just saved my money, exfoliated my own face and leave a good moisturizer on for a lot longer. -

Ok so I'm not the type of person who leaves the house looking like I have a personal stylist. In fact, I'm super comfortable with a ponytail, no makeup and jeans/t-shirt/tennis shoes. Because of this, I'm fairly used to LA salon staff and stylists treating me like I'm not very important when I walk in, nor particularly valuable because I'm not going to have my entire body dipped in wax and every follicle forcibly removed at the root, nor will I have any Brazilian blow outs, or dye jobs, or...you get the point.
When I walked in to Neihule for the first time, I was treated like I was an important and valued patron of the salon. I was shocked. I waited (briefly - I was a little early) for my stylist, whom I'd never met nor had any recommendations to see...I was nervous because going cold and blind to a stylist can be like asking for someone to set your hair on fire, douse it out with leftover chili and call it the next big thing in fashionable styling. I was seriously blessed with Danielle. Yeah, I said it - Danielle is a blessing. She not only fixed my hair that day (I'd dyed my hair grey on accident, long story), but she did it for about HALF what other salons were quoting me, in about HALF the time. She then proceeded to explain to me what salon products were good for my hair, AND offered a cost-effective substitute that I could pick up at local drug stores if I couldn't afford the salon prices. Seriously, thank you Danielle.
It's been a little over a year and I've been her loyal, albeit lazy to make appointments, client ever since. She has cut, dyed, straightened, styled and all around upgraded the health, look and feel of my hair since I first sat down at her station. Today my hair is healthier than it has been in 10 years, longer than it has been in 5 years, and I'm happier with her than I have been with anyone else in Los Angeles. Not only that, but she constantly fills me in on the upcoming specials (some are from Yelp, actually) so I can budget for treatments I might want to try. If I don't want to try them? No problem. No pushing, no suggestions beyond "hey, this seems like it might be something you'd want to know about and possibly take advantage of."
The other stylists are consistently friendly and their clients appear to be just as satisfied as I am. I wouldn't know. I wouldn't trade Danielle for the world. As I type this, I realize I'm about a month overdue for my trim. But I know she'll just be happy to see me when I do get my lazy a$$ in there next.
Thanks Neihuele - you seriously know how to make a tomboy feel like a beauty queen. -

A yelp deal got me in the door to try a facial here. I'm one of those guys that actually does facials. I've slacked off of late, so that was a good incentive to try out Lauree, the esthetician, and Neihule in general.
It was relaxed and refreshing. My face was long-overdue, though not in bad shape. The products Lauree used on me, I'm told, were more mineral based, not so much with the chemicals. We chatted about my regimen, and I appreciated the suggestions for things to consider. I would return.
Lauree is skilled and personable; non-selly and helpful. All pluses.
Get there early. Find a lot, or street parking available on Olive and on 8th. Nice excuse to check out some of Downtown.
The salon itself looked fine. There's a bunch of iPads upstairs for general use. The place was pretty quiet when I went -- but I still had to wait a week before I could book an appointment. -

I'm giving five stars to ALATHEA for the amazing cut she gave me! I can't wait to head back for some color.
She painstakingly made sure my bob was geometrically perfect and that I was 100% happy with it before I left the salon. She also gives a killer scalp massage during the wash!
Thanks Alathea! -

OMG I LOVE this place! I'm luckily enough to be able to walk here from home so I don't really know the parking situation. Yes, it's pricey but when it comes to hair, you get what you pay for. Tryna does amazing cuts! I chopped my hair from mid-length to a cute bob and she did an AWESOME job! Courtney also did a GREAT job at not damaging my hair when I decided to put in a blonde panel in my dark hair. I've recently just gone super light and actually decided to go to Tryna this time since she already cuts my hair. I wasn't able to get it quite as light as I want it YET but only because I want to go pretty light so.... it's gonna take some time. But so far so good!
Oh yea... the BEST part of going here... besides the iPad bar.... sipping on wine or champagne while getting your hair done =)Listed in: My Neighborhood

When I first came to Neihule, I was super excited ... living in DTLA since 2004, a great salon with a cool vibe was much needed. Plus, I really wanted a place to go to without driving across town (I could walk!) and dealing with all the fuss.
My first visit was great - I loved my highlights, loved the space and my stylist totally listened to what I wanted and the color was spot on. As a blonde who likes heavy highlights (and not a base color), it was a refreshing moment - I had a lot of problems with previous stylists making me too gold or not bright enough.
Second visit, not so much. The color was not the same although I went to the same person and I got a dose of gold (no, no, no!). Clearly she didnt write down my color or listen to what I wanted. Plus, she missed a spot at the crown and along my forehead.
Also, I got the upsell for extensions. For someone who had a lot of breakage from bad coloring and had explained how I had a terrible year with hair loss due to stress - not to mention super fine hair ... I have no idea why any stylist would encourage me (and try to get me to commit that day) to try extensions .. other than to make money. Very disappointing. It was the same visit where I overheard my stylist telling an assistant that my highlights were a lot of work because of the number of foils and that she was going to be there for awhile. Ha, great. Uncomfortable for the client (me) ... your stylist is basically complaining in front of you!
I had tried Neihule one more time, determined to make this work - for the above mentioned reasons of locale and much needed cool salon. I went to Christian King, who was amazing and made everything right ... only to find he wasn't there the next time to book an appointment. He is fantastic, rock solid and I was bummed that he no longer there. Love that guy.
There was ONE saving grace to this place and it was getting my eyebrows done here. I had them done a few times; great job and the best eyebrow stylist I have had in LA over 10 years. I hadn't gone in a few months, realizing that at the end of the day I didn't really enjoy coming here anymore - but thought I would give it a go one more time today.
Long story (as it has been) is that I WILL NOT be back. Much to my disappointment - my eyebrows look TERRIBLE! Too thin (even after discussing how thinness deters regrowth), too short and UNEVEN.
Plus, I just cannot go to a place where the customers are made to feel uncomfortable (I tried to use a promo giftcard with some hush hush drama), the place is ghetto chic and where you have to deal with undeserved pretension vs. being treated as a valued client. -

Living Downtown (DTLA) is true city living and discovering local businesses (generally on foot) is one of the true ways to connect with this great neighborhood.
From the street Neihule (pronounced Nay-hoo-lay) looks posh. Floor to ceiling windows display a modern all white salon all the while set in a historic downtown building. This "Apple Store" look is nothing but welcoming to a male technophile like me.
I discovered Neihule when my mother was visiting and treated her to a treatment here that she loved.
For my personal needs, I generally go to Bolt Barber for my basic maintenance (trims and shaves) but this past summer I decided to grow my mop out in an effort to delete any former haircuts and start fresh.
I booked an appointment with Kirsten for a mellow weekday afternoon. Booking was simple and the receptionist was friendly.
Kirsten was not only knowledgeable and stylish but quite charismatic. After a glass of vino was poured the discussion of what I want my new look to be. Like most guys I am lost when it comes to this. I just know I want it to look good and not require 45 minutes of work to style. Kirsten appeased me by having me look through some books of styles but that lasted all of two seconds when she just took the reigns.
This is one of the benefits of going to a salon. Look overhaul. My normal place would most likely just "paint within the lines" (the usual question of how long ago you got your hair cut and the they trim back to that time resulting in the same haircut). Kirsten however was ideal in establishing a new and fresh look.
Shampoo and conditioner was followed by my intensive trim and then a little time under the dryer. Normally I would never sacrifice my masculinity for time under a dryer, but the loft area replete with several iPad's drew me in. After some flipping and sipping I was back in the chair.
As Kirsten walked me back to the chair she mentioned I should go for a different and more dramatic style the next time I come in. She explained why I should and I asked "Can we do it now?" which she obliged (keep in mind this was after my hair was already cut).
I ended up with a great cut and a very pleasant experience. Sure the cost is slightly more than my normal place, but this was a excellent way to establish a new do. Something I will do a couple times a year with the help of Kirsten at Neihule. -

I really hate to do this but yelp is to give truthful reviews about what we think and not for promoting people who are nice but we don't feel would benefit other customers..I've been debating about writing this or not for the past couple days, it took me awhile because I wanted to see how my skin turns out after a few days. I bought the yelp deal for $49 and so I came here. I have had several facials, some in LA and some in HK. I get facials regularly (every 2 weeks to 1 month from Raya Day Spa) - So this is where I draw my comparisons from.
This review is for the esthetician.
I went to Neihule for a facial and the traffic and parking was crazy. I was there for a 12:30pm appt. There were a lot of one way streets so you really should be careful, if you go, you should probably park before the Salon (Before 7th St., so 8th street or something) Looking for parking made me so late, so i ended up parking at a RANDOM parking lot which ended up costing me $21 for not even 1 hour.
I got there and the esthetician was already waiting for me. She's really nice and considerate. I changed into a gown and got into the warm "bed". She came in explaining how she is different from other estheticians and that she has worked at a doctor's office before and that there is only so much an esthetician can do for her clients.
She washed my face, no facial massage (understandable cuz im breaking out) Anyhow I was 10 minutes late and she did not add in extra time for me (that is fine cuz it's my fault for being late so i wouldn't blame her for it, this could possibly be the reason for the problems I had with her) She spoke with me a lot during the facial to understand my skin condition, facial regimen and products I've used.
She didn't focus the steamer on my face like they normally do. She didn't steam my face well before beginning to extract and she didn't extract thoroughly. She only extracted a few minor things, normally at Raya Day Spa they would extract a lot more. After extracting, she put some glycolic acid on my face then something else to soften the stinging. Then some lotion and i'm done. She did not apply any kind of mask that I was aware of unless the glycolic stinging product was the mask but she never left the room to let the mask dry. It is possible that this is a completely different type of facial that she felt was necessary for my skin.
It is great though, that she is one of the first estheticians to not push products at me. She did not expect me to purchase anything. She is very knowledgeable with skincare. It may just be my experience that wasn't awesome.
It's been a couple days now and my skin has broken out here and there.. normally my skin doesn't break out so quickly after a facial. I desperately need another facial this week and I only had one just a couple days ago and it annoyed me so I wanted to write this review. Anyhoo, just my take on the experience. If you have a different type of skin or if u're not late to your appt then maybe things would turn out differently :) She did however mention that she specializes on acne so I question why my skin is looking this bad right now. hmmmm.... -
Review from Cindy B.
I got my hair done here several months ago because I got a coupon to go in. Well, I wasn't impressed.
The stylist that I worked with cut my hair and colored it and it was all well done but for what I paid...really wasn't worth it. Also, during my whole cut, I just sat there and my stylist barely spoke to me. Kind of awkward considering I was there for about an hour and a half.
This place does good work but not worth the price--even with the discount. -
Review from Laura C.
Los Angeles, CA
I'd like to give a good review, I really would. I went here initially for a cut and a color and my stylist, Kristin, did a nice job. I'm getting married in a few months and brought along some hair extensions that I wanted advice about making into clip-ins for the wedding. As soon as I pulled them out, Kristin and another stylist started telling me that I should just get bonded extensions, that they would be much easier, last longer, etc. etc. The other woman told me that I wouldn't even need that many and they should cost around $400. Soooo, I decided to take their advice and go ahead with another appt. to get bonded extensions.
After the appt. was over and I was given my $1000 price tag (what happened to $400??) my extensions did look great and I loved them until three fell out the next weekend. I know extensions fall out, but this was pretty early, and the really alarming part was that they seemed to have chunks of my shorter hair attached to them.
I googled and searched and found article after article telling me that its normal for bonds to fall out and that there was no way my hair was coming out too, so I chalked it up to me being crazy and tried to enjoy the extensions.
But they kept coming out. And the more I looked at them, the more of my own hair I found. We're talking equal part my hair, equal part extension was coming out. NOT okay.
So after having them in for a measly month, I went back to the salon to ask what was going on. "We've never seen this before! This only happens to 1 out of 200 people!" I felt like a science experiment gone wrong. Needless to say, I wanted them out immediately. And this is what gets me a little bit...instead of making me feel like she really cared about the fact that my hair had literally been ripped from my head, Kristin handed me off to FOUR different people at the salon to get the extensions out and deal with me. And, for a sensitive situation, they were certainly NOT sensitive about getting the extensions out. My head was jerked so hard a few times that tears came to my eyes. A manager never came over to give an apology. Nada.
As the final girl working on me blow dried my hair and left me with "At least you already have your fiance and he doesn't care what you look like" I was beyond upset.
Guys, my hair is not that weak or brittle. And if they recognized my hair as being weak or over processed, they should have never pushed me so hard to get extensions. I have had extensions twice before, and never have I had anything like this happen. I was totally talked into something and now I'm left before my wedding with thinner hair than ever.
They refunded me half my money...to me this was not nearly enough. PLEASE seriously consider extensions before you have them put in at Neihule. -

4.5 Stars.
Did you ever sit next to that girl at school with perfect penmanship (you know, like in the D'Nealian guide) and all her school books neatly stacked up, in alphabetical order?
That is what Courtney is like with your hair color. Tell her what you want and she will Tim Gunn style make-it-work! I walked in with two inches of roots, barbed wire ends and faded color, fingers crossed that Yelp had led me to the right place. Major props to fellow Yelpers - xoxoxo.
The salon itself is an airy white space, complete with chandelier. Everything looks minty clean there, including the bathroom. No street parking unfortunately but there's a lot across the street ($5.50 all day on saturdays!).
Courtney took the time to condition my sandpaper hair between EVERY process that she did - and I was there for more than 5 hours. She explained the 'what' and 'why' of every (and I mean EVERY!) step. How many colorists have you had explain why they're using this or that exact mix of chemicals on your hair? And I have to say this, I would come back anyway because she did a fabulous job but on top of everything, Courtney has the stylist's version of good bedside manner, checking on your beverages so they don't get cold, frequently asking how you're doing, slipping extra towels under your head at the sink, and recording your color mix on a customer card for next time.
The total was pricey - I'm not gonna lie - but I walked out with some smooth and rich walnut-colored locks. In a perfect world, there'd be a student special or a customer loyalty card and easy parking, but for color it doesn't get much better than this!Listed in: Getting Pretty in LA

Yvonne fixed everything I had done wrong to my hair.
I had cut my own bangs -_- BIG MISTAKE
I let them grow and went to someone else and I still looked like I had a horrible wig on.
She made my hair look flawless, I don't think I can trust anyone else with my hair after my experience with her.
I dont care about the price, its worth every penny! -

I haven't yelped in a long time, so the fact that I'm writing a Yelp for Whitney at Neihule is a big deal! And, that must mean she's awesome!
Whitney was my stylist at Grasshopper in San Francisco until she moved out of town. I was so sad because she's the best stylist I've ever been to - amazing with cut and color. Especially, color. She worked with my constant changes from brunette to blonde to red and back to brunette again. And each time I was beyond thrilled with the results.
Whitney is now at Neihule Salon in LA - I saw her a few weeks ago while on a weekend trip to LA. She "fixed" the damage done by another stylist and turned my hair into exactly what I had wanted. She's awesome.
Definitely, highly recommend Whitney! -

this place rules! it's chic and super clean, everyone is friendly and there's a cheap paid parking place right across the street. it's very spacious and even though it's a busy place, it's never too loud and the music they've played so far was a nice backdrop to the ambiance.
i'm new to town and needed a recommendation for a new stylist. a friend had raved about alathea reese, so i decided to give her a try.
her scalp massage during the shampoo is *the best* i have ever received. she doesn't rush it or skim any time off. i'd probably pay just for this service every week! :) so relaxing.
she makes sure to consult with you and understand what you want from your haircut and talks about what styles might suit you best. with over 8 years experience, i definitely trust her with these curls (she also has curly hair so she understands how hard it can be to get a good hair cut!) and if i ever wanted color, she would definitely be my girl!
don't forget about the free alcoholic beverages and ipad stations while your hair is being processed! so original and convenient. :) -

I thought I had found my go-to salon a while back, but then one rainy day I felt the need for a hair cut and didn't want to sit in hours of traffic on the I-10. Enter Neihule and a whole new level of amazing-ness in my life. Am I being dramatic? Maybe, but hair is a big deal and so is traffic to me. Only a couple of blocks away from where I live, Neihule is a godsend. The space is light and airy with plenty of big windows for prime people watching during the day. The manicurist was really nice and helped me pick a cute color. I appreciated how she didn't try to press additional services on me and that everything was clean. The manicure itself also lasted longer than average, making it a winner in my book.
Lindsay, my hair stylist, turned my slightly short, plain, straight hair into a much cuter, textured and updated look. I got tons of compliments, which has been unfortunately rare in the past when concerning my hair (yes, I have suffered from boring). She was also very considerate about costs when I decided on a whim to lighten my hair, coming up with an efficient plan of attack that would save both the integrity of my hair and my wallet. Again, tons of compliments about my lighter shade. I'm horrible about explaining things and going blond was a drastic change with the potential to go horribly wrong, but Lindsay did an amazing job understanding what I wanted and making my hair look great. Her blowouts are also fantastic!
Great hair stylist, manicurist, and location = A+ in my book!
**my only complaint-- parking in the area is supremely difficult! most of the street parking is 1 hour only and the lots charge extremely high rates. If I go during the day, I don't mind walking a little and usually park a few of blocks south near 8th street where there is a small lot that only charges a $5 flat rate, the best deal I've been able to find. -

I went to this salon to get my nails done last week... I was in town on business and by the end of the week my previous mani was growing out, so I thought I'd splurge on a mani-pedi. It wasn't worth it at all.
First - there was no massage! None at all. As I sat there in the pedi chair reading my magazine, I felt the girl put lotion on my legs... so I sat back to relax and enjoy the massage (my favorite part of a pedi). Instead, next I felt her start to paint my toenails! I'm not exaggerating, I spend more time putting lotion on my legs every morning than she spent doing it. It was maybe 15-20 seconds, she barely even rubbed it in let alone made it a massage. I'm truly not exaggerating... I was shocked.
Second - the manicure started to go to hell by that afternoon. About 6 hours after I had it done, one of my nails chipped... the next day, another 2 chipped and one nail ripped off because they had all been buffed down too much (she buffed the ridges with a nail file instead of a buffer, and every time my hands get wet now my nails turn to tissue paper).
Polish colors - seriously, could they have choices other than pale pink or red? Every bottle was a variation of pale pink, red, or rose... no browns, metallics like gold or silver, purples... I wanted a pale lilac and there wasn't a single bottle of that color. I did spy one bottle of blue, that was the only color other than pink or red. So don't expect a lot of choices.
Another annoyance, small but still annoying - instead of regular pedi chairs with a footrest, you put your feet in a bowl and the nail tech sits on a rolling stool with a place to put your feet up... my nail girl was so tiny and light, every time i put my foot up for her to do anything, the little bit of pressure from my foot had her rolling backwards. so i basically had to hold my own foot up and barely rest it on the footrest so she wouldn't move. not relaxing at all.
The only reason I am giving this place 2 stars instead of 1, is: 1. my nails did look really really good for that first day, before they started to chip and break that afternoon, and 2. one of the stylists was super nice before i left... i asked the front desk for vintage store recommendations in the area, and they called him over... he called one of the other stylists at home to ask her for names of places, and then googled them and wrote down the addresses for me. that was really cool.
The other reviews on here look like the stylists are really good... I wouldn't waste my time on their nail services though. -

Micha knows what's she's doing with black hair / African-American hair! My stylist was on vaca and I needed help! I tried out Micha for a "press n curl." I went in there with super dry hair and came out sleek shiny and healthy. Her conditioning shampoo is awesome. It really did reduce breakage. She uses moroccan oil, which works like a miracle for my hair (if you have black hair and don't know about moroccan oil - it's worth it). I will definitely come back when my stylist is out!

I love, love, love this salon. Upscale, but with zero attitude. Seriously, everyone who works there is incredibly nice. They are a very diverse group of stylists with most every race represented - which means you get a lot of expertise on various types of hair all under one roof.
I go to Micha almost every week for a shampoo and blow out. She also does my extensions about once every 3 months. Micha is their go-to person for African American hair (black hair). We joke each week that when I sit down in her chair I am going to get the Beyonce look.
Go to Ruth for a killer manicure and pedicure. She is a true perfectionist.
Parking on Olive a couple blocks down (same block as the 7-11) is reasonable. On weekends, parking is very cheap.Listed in: Grooming Places for Ladies

NAILS:
FINALLY. Finally, I have found a manicure / pedicure in LA that lives up to my standards. Elena at Neihule is fabulous. The pedi was completed foot-bath style, no huge, noisy chairs. It was calming and sophisticated. My footsies came out PERFECTLY. Even on my short fingernails, she encouraged me to go for the bright red! And, they look phenomenal. I am rough on my hands and still no chips!
FACIALS:
Laurie also is spectacular. I quit smoking about 3 weeks ago and felt like I needed all the impurities to be sucked outta my face. She set me up with a battalion of serums and exfoliants. The whole process was a dream and my skin came out beautifully. (See facebook status from this AM, RE: being carded without make-up on.) I'm hooked! -

I loved this place! They sell Kérastase (Sold only in the most prestigious salons) and have white leather, can we say they are the creme de la creme? - I think so.
Now might seem odd to some folks why I went to this place in the first place. But that's the just of it - white leather and high end Loreal brand. I mean when you are into hair and looking/feeling good about yourself you have to spend a little more. I mean if you're willing to pay about 40 bucks for a small bottle of shampoo you wouldn't hit Super Cuts for a trim.
I called them up after looking at a ton of reviews and made an appointment for my lunch break with a stylist who had 6 years+ experience.
Kate was lovely and sweet and nice. I liked her alot. She cut my hair great, and blew dry it pretty snappy too. I will be going back to her very soon. I enjoyed her knowledge and personality. She didn't seem overly chatty nor too standoffish. I told her 2 inches + bangs and that's what she did and well at that. I hope this review doesn't make her too busy for my once in a while trim.
They have a lovely layout and nice feel to the place. Prices are standard for high end salons so beware but I always say you get what you pay for. And when it comes to my hair I will not just let some fresh out of beauty school newbie cut it.
(I worked at a salon so I am super critical of them. This place was great!) -
Review from Christine C.
Los Angeles, CA
One of the best haircuts I've ever had, Neihule truly is a gem of a salon in Downtown! I booked an appointment with Christine in the morning so I could get a cut before work. Traffic isn't too bad before 9, but I usually give myself ample time to find parking since in DTLA, it can be a bit of a hassle. Meters are way expensive, I think I found a lot that was like 7 bucks or something that was really close instead.
So before coming here I literally have not had a haircut in over a year(!) and since then had bleached and dyed it different colors many times over that timespan. So, my hair was a bit of a wreck and needed some help, Neihule and Christine to the rescue. She first sat me down at her station to consult what I wanted to my hair. Well, I had explained I had wanted layers again for volume, and to cut off most of the bleached parts that were left. She understood and had a vision for my hair to give it extra volume and shape.
After a soothing hair wash she was off to cut my hair. It seemed like she cut a lot off, but true to what I wanted she did not cut too much off. She left a few of the bleached parts at the end and after blowdry she even offered to curl my hair. Working her magic on the flatiron, it was awesome! I felt so refreshed, and my hair is no longer not limp and stiff anymore. Even when not curled it has much more shape and volume.
They also carry top-tier salon products, as I was treated to some Kérastase Double Force spray to hold my curls. They also do not force or push you to buy products like other salons may do.
The interior of the place is also nicely decorated, and you can see in through the glass panels so other pedestrians will be able to see you getting a haircut. But it's a treat! This is a very nice and classy salon, so expect to pay the price of one. But it's well worth it if you can! :) -

"You are gonna LOVE the skin you are in, I guarantee"...
Lori has been my esthetician for almost 3 years now. I met Lori in early 2008 after experimenting for several years with different spas and treatments all over Los Angeles and surroundings. After being repeatedly disappointed by the lack of knowledge of so-called spa "professionals" of the basic skin needs, products on the market, or a total lack of care for their clients, I had decided to go solo, and tackle the issue myself (or so I thought)... eventually I managed to make my skin worse... Luckily I got introduced to Lori by a friend of mine. I have followed Lori to every spa she moves to, I refuse to let anyone touch my face. I cannot stop telling everyone I know how Lori has dramatically improved and literally saved my skin. Not only are her facials exceptional and customized, she recommends an entire skin regiment, taking all the guess work out of your daily skin needs. Lori is very friendly, down to earth, warm and incredibly knowledgeable. She makes one feel welcomed and cared for. She will examine your skin and ask about your care routine, make recommendations and educate you about skin care, all the while developing and applying a personalized treatment for your skin. Like most gifted and knowledgeable professionals she is not pushy nor condescending, but what she does during the facial, and what she encourages you to do every day definitely works.
Pros:The most knowledgeable skin care professional I've been to. Highly skilled esthetician, warm friendly relaxing atmosphere, great product suggestions
Cons:None. -

Proof that Downtown Los Angeles is on it's way up. A salon like this, makes the city and downtown residents equally proud.
I personally have never received a haircut from here, as you can see from my profile picture, but my girlfriend amps up her beauty from Johcelynn every time she wants to stand out. She trusts her expertise, and has walked out of the salon with several different hairstyles. All have been a perfect compliment to my girlfriend's style and beauty.
For boyfriends like me, they have laptops with internet access free to use while your girlfriend is getting her treatments. It's also perfect for people watching around downtown, due to the large windows that surround the exterior of the Salon.
Not just for women either, I have male friends who are loyal customers that request the hottest trends and celebrity hairstyles. It's definitely an improvement from saying you had your hair cut from Supercuts from a lady who can't speak english or just ate something ethnic loaded with onions.
Be sure you ask for Johcelynn, judging from the way my girlfriend looks....she definitely knows what shes doing.
PS: Because of this place, "Brazillian Blowout" is no longer what I do after eating Versilles, and a "Lob" is no longer a way to throw a ball.
PS2: Did someone really do a review of this salon from the outside when it was closed? C'mon you can't be serious. -
