Glad to see this place continue to survive. The building they are in has been a slow death for other businesses so I was sure this wouldn't last. But they do a good job in there and the local word has gotten around. Judging by the reviews this place should be around for a while.
I have only tried a few latte type drinks on the menu. The quality is good and they add little extra twist to their exotic coffee choices. I tried a cookie there once and and it was not that great. I hesitate to buy their food as it's overpriced like the coffee chain offerings (no croissant should be $2). This may be their only drawback.
The winner here though is that is not a chain and the staff are very upbeat and friendly. It's great to support a neighborhood business especially one that tries hard. I hope they do well for themselves as I support them for however long that will be.
I love supporting local businesses.
Especially the ones that deserve it, like Neighborhood Grinds.
I just walk on over and get my weekend caffeine fix.
The beans are really good and it's a good thing the baristas know their stuff here.
They even get all creative with their foam art, which is really cute.
Their sandwiches are pretty good as well.
I tried their Ham and brie on ciabatta and Veggie sandwich on wheat.
I just found out you can text your order....that's pretty crazy.
Free wifi, which is now pretty standard in all coffee shops.
I'm soOoo over Starbucks...and their automated self foaming machines with a press of a button, and their prepackaged gross sandwiches.
I have been very hesitant to try any sweetened lattes (mochas, vanilla lattes, etc.) ever since I was traumatized by Starbucks. Starbucks puts so much syrup in their espresso drinks that I can barely taste the espresso, and I have to wonder whether there is any other ingredient in those drinks besides SUGAR. Ew. So imagine how scared I was to order a caramel latte from Neighborhood Grinds!
The delightful barista brought the caramel latte to my table in a cup and saucer. So far so good. One taste was all it took: creamy froth, just a hint of caramel, no burnt beans!! Yay, success!! I actually like my espresso a little stronger, but really, it was quite delicious. I ended up camping out at Neighborhood Grinds for almost 3 hours, sipping happily on my latte and messing with my laptop. It seems to be the comfortable "camping out" type of place, with comfy places to sit, multiple outlets, good music (yay Smashing Pumpkins!), and plenty of natural light. It's also a good place to catch up with a few friends because they have spacious seating and the cool artwork on the walls gives it a livelier atmosphere than the usual coffee house.
And yes, it is true, all their baked goods are 50% off after 8pm! Next time, I'll try one...
Neighborhood Grinds has no bells and whistles, but it is absolutely perfect for what it is: an independent neighborhood coffeeshop, providing quality service and quality coffee for the locals. I can't imagine a better place to go if I want to relax with a good cup o' joe.
Check out the majority of the Ratings ? Mostly 5 Stars ? YES. This is accurate.
They have the best coffee I have ever had... and some of the most
amazing desserts too.
This place has been getting busier every week since it opened...
you can tell its got loyal fans.
They have this special funky glass beaker brewed coffee now... really high tech and super high quality. Try it.
Bring a laptop and hang out for an evening.....
Above average coffee drinks, below average and overpriced food, and seating not too well kept (the times I've been there). Cappucinos are good and come in one size (as they should), coffees were better than most chains. Sandwich was on store-bought bread with cherry tomatoes that were over-ripe (seeds were sprouting inside, ew). They need to clear and wipe the tables more often, and the cashier/barista shouldn't be taking breaks at customer tables. Go there for coffee if you're in the area, avoid the edibles.
EDIT: There IS free wifi. The manager contacted me after reading my review and said he'll work on the aforementioned items. I'll have to try this place again. Good customer service.
My new favorite cafe!
I ordered a small iced caramel latte ($3.65) and sat down with my laptop. I was expecting the barista to call my order and for me to go up to the counter to get it like how Starbucks does it, but she brought it TO ME when it was ready! AND she gave me the business card with the free wifi password on it because she saw that I had my laptop! How NICE!! :) I was already liking the place and I hadn't even tried my coffee yet!
AND my iced latte was perfect! Not too bitter, not too sweet, and it tasted exactly like I wanted! I wasn't hungry so I didn't order any of their food or desserts but they have lots of yummy sandwiches to choose from which they make (not pre-wrapped), and lots of desserts which are 50% off after 8 PM!!!!
Overall, it's a great environment to study in or to come chill with your laptop and friends!
I wish Neighborhood Grinds was closer to my house! I think I would seriously come everyday!
Absolutely LOVE this place!
You've got to try the non-fat, dark chocolate mocha w/chocolate whip! It's the best! **Another major perk: they actually allow you to TEXT your order in! Plus, if you have their rewards card, you don't even have to show them the card or give them your phone number because it's linked to the text! Just make sure you list your cell number when signing up! They also offer curbside service. You don't even have to get out of your car if your in a hurry on your way to work in the morning!
GREAT coffee, nice location, lots of indoor AND outdoor seating, friendly staff. they're even on twitter: http://twitter.com/ngr... @ngrinds
free wifi for the first 2 hours, available at different pay rates after (cheaper than att/starbucks).
I just moved to Redondo Beach and I would always see that Neighborhood Grinds was really crowded in the mornings. I decided to finally try it when I met a friend from out of town. One of the workers was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I tried the caramel blended drink and it was perfect. Not too sweet. I went back to try the prosciutto panini and it was amazing! All of their food on the menu appears to be quite tasty. I will definitely become a frequent customer of Neighborhood Grinds. The place is extremely customer service oriented, reasonable prices, great coffee, and great food. I have been there 3 times so far and on every visit I have been impressed. I love local businesses that are much better than chain restaurants/cafes.
Whenever and wherever possible, I try to not support corporate america, especially corporate coffee. This is only one reason I love Neighborhood Grinds! Admittedly I have only tried two things: their smoothies and their mochas. Their smoothies are pretty good but their mochas are to die for. I don't even like mochas, I generally prefer vanilla lattes but when I want a sweet treat their mochas hit the spot. I just bought one for myself and my mother-in-law and hers was gone in 5 minutes - no joke!
Try this place - you will not be disappointed. They are awesome and for blended drinks wouldn't you rather have a drink you can customize than some pre-made mix (a la SBUX)?
Being from Boston, I'm used to a VERY old-world type of feel in a cafe: Exposed brick walls, old rickety tables, dusty books on the shelves. This place has a more modern feel, is VERY clean and features quiet but kind staff members. It's a nice little place.
Here's why I give it five stars: In addition to their regular house brew, they feature a 'special' type of brewing method that doesn't exist at any other cafe here in L.A. (at least not that I've found just yet): An ancient, beaker-type method using select, single origin beans (a selection of two different types is available at any given time, and they change this up every 2-4 weeks). It's the best cup of coffee I've had thus far in L.A. (being a fairly new Bostonian transplant).
This unique brew raises the bar on coffee brewing. Having been raised on Guglielmo espresso and GOOD coffee, (not freakin' Starbucks and Petes), I can attest to the fact that this cup of coffee is a step above the rest. It's a bit more expensive than their regular house brew, 2 1/2 bucks, but it's WELL worth it!
It's a nice little neighborhood joint with good food, (not eyes-rolling-back-in-head good, but tasty none the less), with a side patio and a selection of books and games available for all your quiet, cafe pleasures :-) NOTE: The single origin brew should be enjoyed in-house. Pouring it into a paper cup is not the way to go here. Sit down and sip slowly; like us Italians do :-)
I hate myself for not trying this place sooner. I recently had one of the best soy mocha's I've ever had. Not too much chocolate and not too much expresso. It was just right! I felt like Goldilocks (minus the bears and the gold locks. Is there such a name as Blackilocks?) The mocha was perfect right down to the little foam design compliments of the super sweet barista.
I was only able to try a small veggie sandwich and my taste buds yearned for more. (I was there for a special event so I couldn't just raid the platter of sandwiches!)
Will be back to try the rest of the menu and please my taste buds!
Great stuff
i always get iced americano with non fat milk size med.
its always great got warm welcoming when u order i dont know why Antho had sucha bad experience with the cashier... its probably one of their bad days (everyone has em...) well free WiFi, comfortable couch, great coffee, and friendly cashiers, what can you ask for???
Definition of Nepotism: The showing of favoritism for relatives or friends based upon that relationship, rather than on an objective evaluation of ability or suitability. For instance, offering employment to a relative, despite the fact that there are others who are better qualified and willing to perform the job. The word nepotism is from the Latin word 'nepos', meaning "nephew" or "grandchild". (Source: http://en.wikipedia.or...)
I suppose family businesses will employ relatives because they conclude that it will help out the bottom line, especially if your business is a start up. However, on the other hand, if the said relative/employee has the personality of a dead fish, offering no greeting or smile when a customer comes in to order then I don't think that really helps the business grow its clientele.
That said, I decided to stop in since I'm on a coffee house kick lately because it's great to get away to a place with ambiance to do some computer work.
The Americano I ordered was probably the worst I've ever tasted from any coffee house I've been to. It was extremely bitter and there were grounds at the bottom of the cup after I've consumed most of it.
I did order a peanut butter chocolate chip cookie on my way out which was pretty good and for that, I give a star. The second star is for the owner actually giving a haggardly looking homeless woman a cup of coffee who stood outside by the front door mumbling to herself . The third star is for having free wifi!
Kudos to whomever baked the cookies but if this place can hire a more congenial cashier, I might be more apt to visit again sometime. Then again, being that there are other places with way better tasting coffee and a more stimulating atmosphere, I'd probably pass on coming here again unless I really had no other option.
Upon doing my annoying laundry, I walked over to the Neighborhood Grinds for a cup of coffee.
One sip! and OMG, never thought a mom and pops coffee shop has such aromatic coffee! Since then I stop by at least 2-3days of the week to pick up my morning coffee instead of going to starbucks! !
They brew it just right and it has less acidy tastes then Starbucks coffee.
and their Americana are good too!
Best espresso shots and cappuccino in the South Bay and ridiculously friendly staff.
Great place to chill and read the paper while doing laundry at the clean scene.
Good mocha and sandwich (ham and brie). Chocolate croissant was a little too oily (i guess buttery) though. Helpful staff. Plenty of parking and tables (inside and out - so you can bring your dog!). Nice clean look inside. Overall good experience!
The PERFECT neighborhood coffee shop. Despite what James C said below, I think the food is delicious! I have tried almost everything on the menu and I love the fresh yogurt with granola (made there in the store from scratch) and the Veggie sandwich with the small salad. The food is always super fresh and the the sandwich is packed with flavor - and I'm a meat eater! But the baked goods are also crazy good. I LOVE their blueberry scones - PACKED with blueberries and delicious. They bake fresh daily. They also have HUGE variety of coffee drinks - every drink made with care. If you're in in a hurry, this place forces you to slow down and watch the staff make your drink with care. It's not a Starbucks where you order and out and then sip your drink and realize it tastes nasty. This place takes care to make your drink the best you've ever had. I drink plain ol lattes - but they taste exactly the same EVERY time and they are delicious! The shop itself is cute and cozy and PERFECT for working all day on your laptop. Internet is not free at all coffee shops - so it's nice that I can come and be online all day long. The owners and staff are always the same faces I see day to day and they always remember my name. I also follow the shop on Facebook and Twitter and they announce store promotions, Wii game nights, Cigar nights and more - I love it! I also participate in the texting of my order. I text before I leave the house and they bring the coffee to my car in the parking lot - Now that's service! I hope they open more locations...
This has become my second home since I'm forever doing laundry! I tried the brownie "brick" & was amazed by how it could be fudgey, cakey, and still have a crispy layer on top all at the same time! And they warmed it up for me so that the little chocolate chips were gooey inside...drool.
I have to give kudos to the pastry chef who always comes up with something interesting. Yesterday it was Nerds cupcakes. Today is a whimsical Easter style cupcake. (Yes, I'm here back to back days! This is the only time I can catch up on Yelp with the free wi fi!)
If I update every time I come here, I would flood my Yelp profile with nothing but Neighborhood Grinds posts. However, last time I came, I did have a delicious roast beef sandwich that had a yummy kick of horseradish. The bread was delicious and perfectly grilled.
This place definitely has a neighborhood feel to it and it makes doing laundry less tedious. I'm glad it's here!

Pleasant atmosphere. Great service. Owner who believes in the community. And the new text message ordering? Sweet!!
I went to Yelp and typed in: "coffee sandwich wi-fi". Neighborhood Grinds is truly the best of all three. It's brand new (opened near one of the best laundromats in the South Bay), so do your laundry and enjoy the cafe while you wait!
The first time I went, I got the veggie sandwich (sandwich not panini), and it was amazing. They didn't scrimp on the avocado, spinach, tomato, it was all fresh and perfect. All sandwiches are served with a small spinach vinaigrette salad. It's healthy and definitely good brain food for when you bust out your laptop and hop on the 2 hours of free wifi.
When I went back, the owner, Fred remembered me and was so nice! This time I got an iced latte which was perfect--full bodied but not too strong, definitely not Starbucks-weak. My best friend and I shared the chocolate brownie which is amazing, but you definitely need to share.
The coolest thing about this place, besides the soothing beige and baby blue color scheme, is the customer loyalty program. No cards to carry, just give them your name every time you come in and it tracks your purchases, until you get 50 points (free drink) or 100 points (free sandwich).
Support your local coffee house, where everyone is nice (and actually *does* know your name), and the atmosphere is welcoming and non-corporate. Go Neighborhood Grinds!!
We finally had a chance to try out this place a few weeks back and it was pretty good. I could tell they use good quality espresso beans but the shot was pulled too long which resulted in a slightly acidic, over-extracted shot. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't fantastic.
I guess I was hoping that since this is more of a mom and pop type store that they would have a kick-a$$ barista behind the counter. I'll have to drop by again and give it another try. I'm all for supporting local businesses but if all I'm getting is an average cup of coffee, well, there are a few other places that are a lot more convenient.
So pick up your A-game Neighborhood Grinds! I'm willing to go out of my way to buy your stuff but it had better be worth the drive.
such a cute place! My only (non)gripe about this place is that it's not as close to my house as i would like it to be. i guess that's sort of a good thing, though, because i think that i would go there EVERY day and max out my daily calories on their delicious lattes and fanciful pastries.
yes, their caffeinated drinks are consistently good. yes, they have a variety of cookies and cakes to indulge your sweet tooth. and, yes, they have free wifi!!!!!!!! seriously, what more can you ask for? i love going to this cafe to study not only because of all the aforementioned things, but also because they have large, sturdy tables that allow me to spread out my laptop, my stacks of westlaw printouts, AND my casebook. it's just big enough to make me look like a maniacal, overworked law student (or, at least, pose as one - haha).
anyway, i would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a place to study in the south bay. i only wish that their hours were longer (closes at 10 PM). although it gets busy at times, i feel like i'm always able to find an open table and outlet. tonight, it felt especially busy as there was a neat "coffee + cigar" event going on outside on their patio area. even still, i managed to score an open table right near an open outlet.
i'll only say it one more time: highly recommended for anyone looking for a caffeine fix in the south bay.
I just stopped in for an afternoon coffee and to check it out. It is a very nicely put together place! The coffee was outstanding! (and I drink a lot of coffee) Could have been a little friendlier but they were distracted with a repair man and some dude trying to figure out the WiFi....
:)
When Cool Scene closed I was bummed because I really liked their smoothies, then Maui Wowi moved in and I hated their yogurt based smoothies, so when I noticed Neighborhood Grinds moving in I was hoping that they would at least have some good coffee...and they do.
I ordered a non-fat latte and it was really good and I could really taste the espresso too.
I had a taste of their Mango Passion fruit smoothie and I am happy to say they are not yogurt based and it is better than the Mango smoothies at Jamba.
I also ordered their turkey cranberry sandwich on wheat. It came with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and of course turkey and cranberry. It was really really good.
They have paninis too and a ham and brie baguette that I will have to try next time.
My sandwich came with a small side of spinach salad with some house vinaigrette.
They also have a chicken Caesar salad, muffins and croissants.
I went to college in Berkeley and they had the best cafes up there. When I moved back down the South Bay, I was disappointed to see only Starbucks and Coffee Bean. Down with big chain companies!
I am so pleased to have found Neighborhood Grinds. They have free WiFi, GREAT coffee, GREAT pastries, and my best girlfriend says that their sandwiches are great too. (You can trust her taste.) I hear that they even cater, which is wonderful info for future reference. :)
The owner, Fred, is a really nice guy. Has great sense in putting together a really good cafe ambiance. He's super friendly, too.
The crowd is good, as well. Mostly people who have something to read, something to study, or just something to browse for on the internet.
Today, I am going to try the smoothie. They look delish as well.
All in all, I am REALLY pleased with this cafe, and I'm sure I will frequent this place a lot. FINALLY, a GREAT cafe!
btw, they have board games and books. you can hang out for a while and have a really good time.
** This just in: I just tried the mango smoothie. I'm actually sitting inside the cafe right now. IT IS REALLY GOOD. This is officially my new favorite Cafe. Goodbye Borders, goodbye Starbucks, goodbye Coffee Bean. HELLO NEIGHBORHOOD GRINDS.
A part of me doesn't want to post this good review up, because i don't want too many people to know about this cafe. I want to keep it as a secret treasure, but I guess I could be nice this one time. ;)
I'm very picky when it comes to coffee and unfortunately most coffee shops (Including the famous chains) just aren't that good.
I tried their dark chocolate mocha and was very pleasantly surprised. Not too sweet not too bitter - just right! It actually reminded me of my favorite expresso drink from Urth Cafe, the Spanish latte. Except that this had dark chocolate! Excellent.
I also tried their roast beef panini and the ham and cheese panini. Both are VERY good, equally, in my opinion and both come with a small side of spinach and tomato salad. It is all very well made, fresh and delicious.
Their baked goods are also made fresh, not ordered from local places or bought at Costco like most lame coffee shops.
I highly recommend you come here. I honestly can say this is the best coffee shop I've been to in recent memory.
Simply put, the best coffee shop you can find. It's clean, the drinks are great, the food is great, the staff is phenomenal, I absolutely LOVE this place. I'm using the free internet right now in the shop to write this review. I started coming here when they first opened, and from the very first time, I've been a regular. Oh btw, did I mention I live 50 miles away? That's how great this place is.
From the little things like the music not being blaringly loud, to the bright atmosphere and the artwork displayed, makes this place a great place to hang out, do some work, study, take a date, or even just stop by to grab a quick cup. For coffee lovers, this place knows how to make great drinks. They understand the roast, the way the beans should be ground, and the best ways to brew, even the best beans to use. The coffee isn't bitter, instead its flavorful and you don't have to add a buttload of sugar and cream like s-bucks.
You must try to sandwiches here, you can actually taste the quality. And, as a bonus, they have CIGAR NIGHTS. Freaking awesome.
Things I recommend:
EVERYTHING
but if I had to choose, Dark Chocolate Mocha if not the house blend coffee.
I was pleased to see a local coffee house open up in the neighborhood. I stopped by last week and it was great! The coffee is excellent (not watered down) and the scones? TO DIE FOR!
The owner is super friendly and free wifi is awesome! I found my new neighborhood hangout.
I'M IN LOVE.
Today, in Pasadena, it was around 95 degrees. In an effort to 'beat the heat' as they say on the tv news, we decided to get closer to the ocean, but couldn't quite figure out where to go. I searched Yelp far and wide, looking for a sandwich place near the beach. I happened upon Neighborhood Grinds' Yelp page and thought it looked interesting, then checked out their menu. Upon finding some delicious vegetarian sandwich options, I had pretty much decided what I wanted to do today.
It was super easy to find parking, and we were welcomed with the nice coastal breeze. We sat at a table outside and enjoyed delicious paninis with SPINACH SALADS on the side instead of french fries or some other boring addition! The dressing on the salad was delicious, and I wish I had remembered to ask about it once we went back inside, because I would buy it by the bucketful. The salad was simple and amazingly tasty and crisp. I was there with three other people, and we each got a different panini (roast beef, ham, turkey, and veggie) and we all absolutely loved what we had gotten. Among the roast-beef-eaters at the table, the consensus appeared to be that the roast beef was the winner due to the delicious grilled onions and horseradish sauce in there somewhere. My veggie panini was heavenly, and was so flavorful but not overly aggressive in its tastes either. I also had a peach smoothie, which was a perfect accompaniment.
I am guessing that the incredibly nice guy who was working there was the owner, because he had a lot of information to share. He was so warm and welcoming, and was interested in giving us the best experience possible, and we knew it was not just to make a quick $30 out of us.
Even though this is by no means a short little trip down the block for us, we are already planning to go back!
im a regular here at neighborhood grinds and i love this place.
there turkey panini is always a pleasure to eat, and dark mocha is to die for. the salad here are always fresh too!
i recommend everyone to try there famous dark mocha here, yummm~!
best coffee ever!!!!!
love love love that you can have the coffee "HERE" and they bring it to you in a cup.. that's new for me.
screw you styrofoam cups!
thank you 'Grinds for making DELICIOUS white chocolate mocha and bringing it to my table in a pretty cup.. and oh yeah major brownie points for tasty lemon water... mmmm lemon.
:D
My husband and I were too tired to drive up to LA today to spend a relaxing Saturday afternoon so we decided to Yelp local coffee shops in the South Bay area. Neighborhood Grinds came up and seemed to get decent reviews thus far so we thought we'd take a gander. We walked in and the place looked pretty clean and was most of the tables were full. However, they weren't full of annoying high schoolers gossiping or checking out each others' iPhones (I worked at Starbucks for 4.5 years so I know what kinds of folks hang out at Starbucks all day). Instead, folks kept to themselves, studying or surfing the net.
My husband got a iced hazelnut latte and I got my usual soy cappucino. Both were made perfectly! The foam on the cap was amazingly smooth and the coffee tasted perfect. The hazelnut latte wasn't too sweet and the coffee was well balanced. I also ordered two macaroons (strawberry & lemon) and the two were good. I'm not a macaroon connoisseur so you'll have to have someone else comment on them. We also used the coupon for a free mini cupcake (red velvet) and that was delicious!
The two baristas behind the counter were extremely friendly and chill which made for a great experience.
Overall, we would definitely come back again. Come here if you want to avoid the obnoxious Starbucks crowd and you just want a good cup of coffee with two free hours of wifi!
I discovered this little gem when I needed a central location for a business meeting. I've been back twice since. I really enjoyed my latte both times, and my colleague raved about his drip coffee. I like the space--they even have games! Comfortable and cozy with two hours of free WiFi. It's mostly college students that work there, and they've always been friendly. I still need to try the macarons!
They fixed the Wifi and I got my work done today. They are soooo friendly and the coffee is great! Don't let my previous review sway you, this place is a great neighborhood gem :-)

I love our new neighborhood coffee shop. No snooty baristas here! Very friendly and they serve food too. Free wi-fi and nice atmosphere to hang out. I think they can work on their prices.
Nice location. the name implies it is a coffeehouse. But, the coffee is terrible. I know they have custom roasters supply there beans. If a coffee house cant get coffee right??? I've tried this place 4 times and it seems that coffee is a special order every time.
Some of the best tasting coffee I have ever had. I had the Iced Caramel Latte and the first sip blew me away. The flavor is not just strong and bitter like Starbucks but more complex and full bodied. I also picked up a sandwich (Ham and Brie on Ciabatta) which was delicious but I think it pushed my cholesterol and blood pressure off the charts! It came with fresh spinach on the side and a little dijon vinegarette so I didn't feel quite so guilty. The customer service was also top notch. Can't wait to go back for another cup.
had the nonfat dark chocolate mocha... VERY TASTY. not too sweet.. PERFECT.
i LOVE the vanilla latte and blueberry scones!!!! i wish there was one in the bay area where we live - next time we're in l.a. we're definitely taking a much needed trip here!
