I live in Seattle and time my work trips so I can see Eric to cut my hair when I am there. He's the best and my haircut always looks perfect!

I have been going to Eric (Arkady) for years, years before he opened this shop. Besides giving a consistently good haircut, he makes reservations (and yes he answers his own phone), and although he does sometimes run late, you have to learn when the best time to go is to minimize the wait. As with everything in NYC, if it is good, there's a line and you wait, so I suggest that for this price and service, you be as flexible as possible. (To get a first appointment with my doctor over the years, there was sometimes a three month wait for new patients, but in an emergency, he saw a friend of mine; this is similar.) (Welcome to NYC...)
Since I have a long relationship with my barber, I know he will do the best he can to accommodate me. (('ve known him since before he married and had three kids...) And he's a great guy. If you are looking to make this town one where you have longstanding personal relationships with professionals, this is a good place for your haircut. -

I've had a couple of great haircuts here and a 5-star review lined up. I've been to a lot of the "usual" haunts for guys - Freeman's, Frank's, etc.
However last week I went to get my hair cut before my friend's wedding and got it beyond botched by somebody who I think had only cut (and by cut I mean buzzed) his own head before. The cut was totally uneven, took nearly and hour and he even managed to cut himself in the process.
By the time I was "done", all the other guys were slammed otherwise I would have asked for somebody to fix it. Since I was already late to meet up with a friend, I just paid the guy and left. I think he was actually kind of shocked that I paid without any sort of argument.
Stick with the guys in the front chairs and you'll be fine. If you sit down and have any inclination that your barber has no clue what he's doing, just ask to wait for somebody else. Even at $14, you shouldn't walk out looking worse than when you walked in. -

First off, you have to know that the haircut's $14. Start there, set your expectations and it just gets better.
It's a small three chair shop -- during prime times, I imagine it can get packed. I went there after work (6-7p) on a Thursday and I got in before I could get to any girly pics in one of the many Playboys they had with all of the shop's magazines (typical guy mags ... think GQ, Car & Driver, Maxim, etc.). I was very specific about what I wanted for my hair and requested a scissor only cut from Eric. Most of the cut was punctuated by the radio faint in the background -- read: not a whole lot of conversation from either of the three guys working or five customers in the shop -- which was fine by me.
A neck shave and a beard trim later, I owed 'em $17 and looked pretty sharp. It's not an exciting haircut but you can't beat a classic. I'll be coming back, for sure. -

There are few things I hate in this world more than getting my hair cut. It is up there with Vegans. When I moved to NYC I was dreading looking for a barbershop. I anticipated having to pay upwards of $40 for something that could be done for a fraction of the price (like most things in New York). To my great surprise there was a barbershop 2 blocks from place that came very high regarded. Having gotten my hair cut their twice now, I can truly give this place my sign of approval. I have thick messy hair, and each time they took twice as long with me than other customers. They were very meticulous and helpful. If this place had simulated waterfalls and bamboo, I'm sure more people would rate it higher. Fantastic Barbershop. Fantastic Price. Worth the trip if you don't have cheap alternatives near you.

Review from Peter D.
I feel as though I have to write this update, for two reasons.
1. In my previous review, I cited Steve and Danny as my favorite barbers. When I went in a couple days ago, I was told that Danny no longer works there, and Steve has taken an indefinite amount of time off.
2. Although my haircut was still done both efficiently and competently, I'm just not as happy with it as I'm accustomed to being.
I AM happy to report that not only did I witness my second back-shave, but this guy also got himself a chest-shave as well. So I can finally cross that off my list of things to see.
And my barber gave me a tiny bottle of Hendrick's gin for the holidays, which was very nice. And classy.Listed in: alphabet city., why i look so damn good.

Ever see the Seinfeld where there is Porn in the dentist waiting room? Well I think Whatley opened a barber shop! Yeah I couldn't believe it but believe it..its there. Kinda odd but whatever..can't go wrong with a little girl-on-girl porn.
Anyway...Haircut..Really a no-frills place which is exactly how I like it. Go in..wait less than 5 minutes, scissors, clippers, done. Been going here for about 2 years and no matter who I get I've been happy with.
As a random note...Haven't seen it yet..but they do back shaves and offer it openly.
Bottom Line: Fantastic place with A+ service in every aspect. Little wait and priced fairly. -

These guys deserve every star they've gotten. I was so impressed. No, no, I didn't get my hair cut here. But my brother did. And I watched the whole time - minus the time I was snapping pictures. So I'm an older sister... what what?
Thanks to the previous reviews, we came here with my little bro during our short trip out to NY - and thankfully, he now has a local barber shop he can trust!
Danny did a fantastic job. While the other barbers joked with each other, Danny was silent throughout the entire process - checking out every angle. He spent more time precisely cutting my brother's hair than my stylist does with me! Me, jealous? Hell yeah.
He had no problems redoing my brother's whole head when we thought the front of his hair should be shorter. It was amazing. He was patient and skillful. He finally cracked a smile at the end when we praised the result.
Then the $14 price - hard-earned money. Great job guys!!!
See pics! -

I had an excellent experience here. I am Chinese/White and I live in Harlem and have been going to black or Dominican barbers consistently because I can get a nice fade. My barber left the shop I went to on 145th, so I was forced to find another place quick.
Ben cut my hair. It had been growing for 3 weeks, so it barely resembled the look I usually have (since I keep it so short, especially on the sides.) Not to mention that the barber I had last time jacked it up a bit, so it grew out kinda funny. All I told him was I wanted a skin fade and a trim on the top, and i just pinched my fingers together to tell him how much I wanted off. He did a perfect job. Straight razor with cream behind the ears and on the neck - for the regular (included price) - pretty dope! It's rare that you still get that without having to ask or fork over extra dough.
I'll definitely make the trek down to the east village to come back to this place. -

Not (yet) my Neighborhood Barber, but it's another reason to pick up and move to NYC.
How the fuck does Manhattan offer a cheaper haircut than LA? I got my hair washed too, and I STILL PAID LESS! And you're not giving up any quality. Unlike some other barbershops (*cough* Floyd's *cough*), there are no bumblefucks who have no clue what they're doing or blatantly ignore your direction.
No idle chit-chat either. I know some people love to chop it up with their barber/stylist/whatever. But um, just cut my hair in semi-silence please. Thanks.
Downside: this joint is well-known so be prepared to wait. I was too starved, but came back after some lunch to a shorter line! But y'kno, long lines are usually a good sign.Listed in: I HEART NY

Unfortunately they recently upped their price for a Men's cut to $14. Still, it's every bit worth it. Probably the best barbershop I've been to with the exception of one guy at the Times Barbershop in Houston, but that's another matter.
What Barber Shop is open until 9 during the week and is open on BOTH Sunday and Monday!?!? They must have trouble paying the rent or something, but I think this is awesome.
Every haircut I've had there has been good. The barbers there are nice guys who take their time and pay attention to detail. Had a haircut from a guy name Steve....no complaints, friendly guy to shoot the @#$^ with on a Saturday.
Definitely worth the walk deep into the East Village. -

North Babylon, NY
Just got back from my first haircut in NYC, and these guys are awesome. The haircut was cheap, it looks good, and unlike most of my previous barbers, when they clean up the back of your neck, these guys don't use a trimmer, they actually bust out shaving cream and a straight blade.
As for the next bit of why I like them. I'm weird, and don't generally like making small talk with barbers. If you feel that this particular quirk doesn't apply to you, feel free to stop reading now.
So let me preface this next bit with the fact that I do enjoy shooting the shit with people from time to time. In this case however, unless I actively engage my barber, I'm generally just there for a haircut, not to talk about the weather.
A haircut is like a massage. You've got someone rubbing your head for a half hour while you veg out. The last thing I want is to elaborate on why green, is in fact, my favorite color.
This is why Danny at Neighborhood Barber is freaking awesome. He had an intelligent chat with me about Apple and the technical benefits/pitfalls of their new iPod when I brought up the iPhone he was playing with, but beyond that, he didn't throw out the typical time filling crap of "so what do you do" etc etc....
So yeah, I have a new barbershop. Check it out! -

The guys at Neighborhood Barber don't (won't!) talk to me. I think they hate me. And I dig that!
This is not the place for a chic, textured, layered hairdo. It's not a place to dish about your life while the stylist snip, snip, snips away. It's not a place to expect consistency.
It's cheap. They know enough english (short//no razor/faux-hawk) to supply indifferent cuts that do the job. You're in-and-out in under 10 minutes.
And for some reason they shave your neck at the end. -

When I first moved to NYC a couple years ago I used to go to Frank's Chop Shop for my cuts. They give a great haircut.....but then I found out about Neighborhood Barber and have not been back to Frank. They give the same high quality service, for a fraction of the price. The only difference is that you're getting your cut done by an older Jewish guy instead of a tattooed urban soulja. also, they don't sell fitted hats at neighborhood barber !! haha. this place is so highly recommended.

I don't really know what I expected, I paid $14 dollars for a haircut and got a $14 haircut. My hair is not that hard to cut, it is pretty basic, but somehow they butchered it. It is uneven in many places, and there are still a lot of hairs that he missed all together. I don't think the guy used scissors on my head at all, just trimmers with a variety of guards.
I went here based on all of the great reviews on this site and can not understand where all of these came from. I should have known this was not going to be good when I looked at the haircuts of the guys that work there. They were either shaved, greased back mulletish styles, or bald.
Not only was it a bad haircut, but the guy cutting my hair had a weird body odor that made the whole experience quite unpleasant. It wasn't even normal BO, it was just the way the guy smelled. So, it's not something he can fix, anytime I got that guy I would have the same experience I don't think I will be going back here again. At least it was only $14. I will let it grow out for a couple of weeks and go somewhere else to get it fixed. -

Pros:
-Great value
-Good haircuts
-Quick
Cons:
-You wont leave here feeling like you just got the best haircut ever
So I came here because my regular barber shop (Chelsea Barbers) decided to up their already expensive haircuts from $30 to $40.
I have read several reviews and many of them say something very true. You can come here to get a good simple haircut. The haircut I received was good. Not great or amazing. Quick, cheap and good. Honestly, I missed Chelsea Barbers and their amazingly talented staff. I will go back here to try it one more time before I swallow my pride and go back to Chelsea Barbers.
PLEASE let me know if you know of any talented barbers in the city! -

Finally! A great cut in Manhattan without breaking the bank. $14 + $5 tip and I still have a dollar left over to get some dumplings (OK, so I didn't get the dumplings, but the point is that I could have).
These guys mean business. Like a previous poster stated, they're not interested in small talk. They cut your hair, the way you ask, and they do it quickly.
I came around 5pm on a Tuesday. There was a minimal wait. I'm sure it's packed nights and weekends.
Small shop, big cuts. Check them out. -

Igor is a pimp.
Quick, very careful, and cheap. Tony is right.
Igor is always pleasant, remembers you, and does a solid cut.
JUST IN! Igor moved to 1st and 1st to a new place.
I've stopped going to Neighborhood Barber. The wait is 40 minutes long, EVEN IF you reserved a place at a certain time. That's bullshit.
I'm sorry, but I can't waste 1.5 hours on a haircut. And I agree, answering the phone 3 times while cutting my hair is not right. -

San Diego, CA
Been there twice so far. Both times I got in and out quickly, and got a decent hair cut (for $14), and didn't have to bother with making small talk with an overly-friendly barber. Judging from the clientele and the barbers, I wouldn't go here if you want something fancy, but if you just want a regular old cut (i.e. "#4 on the sides, 1/2 inch on top, straight in the back"), this place will work just fine. If you want to have a regular stylist that you see every time you come in, look elsewhere.
The first time I went I got a facial shave for $10. My girlfriend couldn't keep her hands off my face afterwards, so it definitely was a closer shave than I can give myself. Wasn't painful, actually quite pleasant with the alternating application of hot and cold, and the massaging in of the aftershave lotion. By the next day you would never have known I went, though, so I'd only recommend it if you for some reason want to be super smooth for the next few hours.
A couple reviews mention the porn. Yes, I've seen Playboys there, but I actually haven't seen anybody actually pick them up and read them, so don't let fear of porn keep you away. -

Astoria, NY
You know... some people have hair that is easily to cut and style and always look good. Mine is not in that category. But Eric makes me look good every times.
I have my haircut with Eric since 1999 since he was with Royal on St. Mark's. I used to live in East Village, so I just walked to have my haircut. Now that I live in Astoria, it takes a while to get there to A and 9th. But I tried with local barber in my area 2-3 times and disappointed.
I moved to upstate for about a year once and couldn't find a barber I liked, so I let my hair grow long for the first time in my life for a year. When I moved back to NYC, I went to see Eric, and he told me he thought I found a better barber. I told him to look at my long hair.
So, no one else touches my head except Eric. -

I like this place! I have a pretty simple haircut, but so far they've always done it well and it's cheap ($14 before tip).
I was looking for a cheap, well-reviewed barber shop and 3 seemed to stand out: Neighborhood Barber, Premium Barber Shop, and Astor Place Hairstylist. So I tried each one once and liked the haircut I got here the best. Since then I've been back three times and have always been happy so far. -

A waste.
But luckily, the barber was A Magic Man, and was able to put back all the hair he cut off in the course of giving me a hair style I did not ask for.
Not really, but that would have been a really good thing. No, I have to wait about a third of a year before I can look at this cut in a mirror without cringing.
Adding insult to injury, my barber had ghastly breath, which he insisted on blowing my way during our ultimately futile conversation about what kind of haircut I wanted. As it happens, I wanted a classic 1940s-style cut, but figured it would be more efficient to ask for short back and sides, don't touch the top or front. He repeated this back to me, in a rather thick (Russian?) accent, as "So you just want (indecipherable)."
"What?" I asked.
This exchange was repeated 3 times, until I understood that his summary was "You just want it cleaned up." My response at this point should have been "Fxxk no, sxxt-brxxth," but as it happens my mom brought me up better than that.
Anyway, I grow weary of this review. Bottom line: the hair atop my head, which wasn't to have been touched, is now one inch long, down from 4 to 5 inches. The shave around the back of my neck was done with a dull blade; that razor burn's keeping me company right now.
Catch these guys after their morning coffee, or, much better still, not at all. If you insist on trying this apparently trendy spot, I suggest you pack some cinnamon gum and possibly some floss for your barber. -
Review from Bill A.
Hands down the BEST barber shop I have ever been to.
They're quick and efficient, they don't waste time with chit-chat, they give you an old-fashioned neckshave for free, and they're open from 8AM to 8PM. Best of all, the whole thing is only fourteen bucks. I would gladly pay twice that for this kind of craftsmanship (but I hope they never figure that out).
I lived for years under the misconception that a simple haircut like mine would be more or less the same no matter where I went. Nope. -
Review from Shane L.
New York, NY
Old School, but in the _VERY_ good way. This place is tiny. While you wait you will likely either be standing or sitting on the tiny bench that lines the wall that is all of five feet away from the backs of the barber chairs.
There are four guys working there, they all seem to know what they are doing. The guy who did my hair said like twelve members of his family were or had been barbers.
I got in pretty quick, seems like some people wait for specific people: there was a line, but I ended up being the "next" person since everyone was waiting for someone else.
The guy did a great job on my hair - exactly what I was looking for. Hell, he even suggested using scissors on top (normally these cheaper places do everything w/ clippers - not here though) - which I took him up on.
Had a good conversation with my guy and he knew what he was doing.
The fact that they straight-blade shave your neck below the hairline is _awesome_ - might even go in sometime for a whole shave. My only complaint is that the guy was a bit harsh on my neck as he did it though - think I might try someone else next time.
Update: Just an FYI - I went again today, had a different guy - still got cut up on the back of the neck... So I would just ask to skip that part. -
Review from Michael C.
New York, NY
This is my first review... I'm a reader, not a writer. (Even though I write, so I'm changing that.) As a forty-cough-something, my once beautiful thick, wavy brunette hair has given way to an attractive, but straw-like grey, and now nearly premature silver-accented white. And where I once thought nothing of paying upwards of $40 for a fully-shaped and styled, layered cut, it is kind of ridiculous to do so for something that now requires a simple barber cut. And because I had a great relationship with Sweeney Todd's in Hollywood before moving to New York, my standards and expectations were pretty high. I bounced around a few Chelsea locations ranging from $12 to $30, ($12 = reasonable for the best of Supercuts, and $30 = excessive for the same), until I moved to the East Village and began searching for one in this neighborhood.
Based on the Yelp reviews, I chose Neighborhood Barber, and it proved to be the best I've found for the money, city-wide. I walked in at around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, and Boris literally swept me off my feet as I settled in for a cut and a shave. (I love the dynamic of Vietnamese nail salons on both coasts, and Russian barbers here in New York.) The cut was near-perfect (minus a star for the shorter length on top, even though they all do that to me). The shave was classic hot-towel with two moisturizing preparations, and I left feeling like I just had a facial at a higher-end salon. And it was two bucks less than advertised on their website. It's not Sweeney Todd's, (which I wait for when I'm planning a trip to Los Angeles), but until Todd decides to open a location here, then Neighborhood Barber is it.
My advice for the negatives: take a photo of you in your best haircut to show the barber. Men are visual creatures. -
Review from Lawrence W.

I get a simple $14 haircut, a #2 buzz. As far as I know, that's pretty hard to mess up. The guys at NB execute it well, for what it's worth. There's 3-4 guys working here and the line has been at least 4 deep every time I've come (weekday evenings), so expect to wait about 30 minutes to get started. I guess that's the price we pay for writing positive reviews on the Interweb.
If you like to schmooze with your barber, this isn't the place to go, its a very efficient, businesslike place. Don't mistake that for unfriendliness. They're helpful if you ask them for an opinion on what would look good, the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the waiting time. -

Yeah. It's cheap. But so what? Got a horrible haircut here. Went based on all the rave reviews on Yelp, but it was a mistake. I had to go get it fixed somewhere else the next day. How cheap is it really when you have to pay for two haircuts.
If all you need is a buzz cut then it might be ok. I think all the barbers do is take the clippers whatever number you want and buzz away. Totally unevenly and out of proportion mind you. -

Finally found a decent, inexpensive, no-frills barber shop... unfortunately for me it's in NYC.
Stopped by on a rainy Tuesday morning around 10am. Took me right away and I was in and out in about 20 minutes.
I asked to take it down approx. 6 weeks worth (yeah, I was shaggy) and he did just that. The straight-razor back of the next shave was also a nice touch. He also didn't decimate my sideburns, which a lot of places seem to like to do.
Good stuff. I'll be back when I am in town next. -
Review from chris r.
six years ago i had long hair and a beard. when everyone else started looking the same, i felt it was time for a change. i had been looking like jesus for far too long anyway. and while it was easy for me to find places that did a good job with longer hair, when i started keeping my hair short, it was a nightmare trying to find a place that i was happy with. so i drifted, from barber to barber, trying to find someone that wouldn't screw up my hair.
i finally ended up here, and met greg. i've been coming here for haircuts with him ever since and i couldn't be happier. he is also the only person i trust with a straight razor on my throat when i occasionally get a shave.
it's best to go during 'off' hours if you're able. i've noticed everyone here taking a little bit more time on haircuts when it's less crowded. afternoons are ideal.
this winter, the beloved canary that chirped cheerily during each visit passed away. he is missed. -

DIRT CHEAP pampering for males. Got myself a cut, a shave, and a shampoo and blowout for less than I'd spend on just the cut at other places. It was like $27, if I'm not mistaken. With tip, I'm out of there within 45 minutes, and looking awesome.
John was so gentle with my hairs, and did /exactly/ what I asked him to. Not one to chatter on with mindless chit-chat, he would regularly checked in with me if he was doing the right thing, and concentrated on my length (I wanted to maintain the length, get in some gentle layers up front, and have the back and sides thinned out, but maintain the body). I have been to salons where I'll spend $250 on the hair cut, and they still don't compare to the care and level of dedication that John had to my requests.
Before my shave, I let John know that I have sensitive skin. He used the gentlest touch, while still making sure to get all the facial hair completely off. I am never again going to spend a small fortune ($15 and up) for a shave in the West Village at places whose reputations and history outweigh their abilities. Don't bother waiting for a specific person; all of the workers are very talented, and have that same attention to detail.
Also, for those of you who are Jewish, there's a Mezzuzah on the door, and a hamza on the wall. :) -

It's a mixed bag here. 2 1/2 stars, really. I've had some good haircuts here, but it really depends upon who is cutting your hair. More than once I've had the feeling that they were really put out if you ask them to change anything about the cut.
Wish I could love this place more, because the price is right. I'm going to check out Igor's for my next cut. -

This place was my favorite barber for a bit. I just moved from LA to NYC in the summer, and this was a great cut at a good price. Then my favorite barber, Igor, left. I was bummed. Not that the other guys aren't good, he just knew my cut really well.
But then I learned Igor opened his own joint on 1st and 1st, which is where I live. So now I get great cuts for $2 bucks less right across the street from my apartment. I highly recommend Neighborhood Barbers if you live just below 14th, and Igor's place (20 1st Av) if you live down by Houston or LES. -

I went to this place with high hopes over the weekend. I have been trying to find a good barber in the neighborhood after cutting my long-ish hair off this summer. No such luck, yet.
I asked for a trim and gave some specific directions which were promptly ignored. My hair was cut far shorter than I requested and I'm not too happy. The haircut looks o.k. now, but it won't be too pretty once it starts growing out.

Boston, MA
These guys aren't hair artists, nor hair scientists, but rather, hair engineers. This is your place if you're looking for a precise, no frills, inexpensive men's haircut. Once you get in the chair, these guys get right down to business. Minimal talking, plenty of snipping. Clean edges are their trademark. The straight razor is a beautiful thing. Other services include shampoo, full shave, beard trim/shave, face massage (?), chest trim/shave (??), and back shave (???). On second thought, it might be wise to double up on the underwear. Y'now, just in case your barber gets a little overzealous with the trim/shave concept.

I just came down here today all the way from the Upper East Side because I read the reviews on Yelp. I was definitely not disappointed! I was trying to find a good place for guys to get a haircut that was good quality and less than $30. This place is pretty much for guys only and the barbers were all men so they understand how guys want their hair. This place costs less than Supercuts and a shampoo is only $3. So $20 will get you a haircut, shampoo, and tip. Not bad. They also razor the back of your neck which is pretty nice and made me feel like I was at an expensive place. And at the end my barber gave me a small bottle of Cuervo Black as a holiday gift. This place rules!

A guy I work with had been raving about the cut he receives here so I looked it up on Yelp and noticed the high score. That did it for me so I went down to check it out on my lunch break. What a great place for a haircut, one of the best ones I've had in a long while. I've been to Ben twice now and he does great work. He finishes your neck and ears with shaving cream and a straight razor. I will be back again soon for my next cut.
