12 reviews for Neehee's Indian Street Food
We stopped into Neehee's for lunch this afternoon and it was amazing and very reasonably priced. We went there based on Yelp reviews. Love Yelp!!
We were a little overwhelmed by the number of menu choices and figured out after we ordered that the "regulars" grab a menu and a table and then go back to order.
We had samosa, some lentil donuts and the most incrediable chickpea curry for $13.
We will be back.
This is probably my last hurrah here but I wanted to write this one up as I never would have found it if not for my limited time on yelp.
I must really thank the very sweet Janelle P for posting a menu and review for Neehee's (the one in Farmington), I would probably have not walked in without the knowledge of what was available. I also have to thank Susan K for her rocking ROTD that alerted me to this particular location.
I liked being able to read people's reviews of both locations as I confess I am pretty much a total Indian food newb, one of the few cuisines I have not been exposed to. I was also delighted to see they had a Neehee's so close to my house!
I decided to take my semi adventurous mom and experiment. Neither of us is put off in the least by spice or heat and we like to get new things, she knows less about Indian food than I do if that is at all possible. We found everyone including other patrons to be welcoming and helpful. It is really delightful.
We had Bhel, Aloo Tikki, Gobi Manchurian with a Mango Lassi and a Sugarcane Juice to wash it down. We then indulged in some Kesar Pista ice cream as we both like saffron and pistachios.
I was really into the combinations of the flavors and textures. It seemed like it danced on the tongue as you ate it. My fave was the aloo tikki, such a happy combo of tastes, I could have kept eating it and chasing it down with the mango lassi. The bhel was crunchy and just really complex, I was not sure if I would be jazzed about the mint but it works. The gobi manchurian was hot and sweet and yet you really tasted the califlower. It was my least fave of the three but still very good indeed. The sugarcane juice was very tasty with the ginger and lime but you really can't beat a mango lassi.
The kesar pista was one of the big draws for me and it did not disappoint at all, so dense and creamy with hints of saffron that have you chasing it with more and more bites.
I will definitely be back to Neehee's for further experimentation.
I remember when we moved to Canton, and it seemed like Max & Erma's was about it. It was the poster community for middle-class white suburban living. Since then I have watched Canton grow more and more diverse and interesting. Neehee's is a great milepost on that journey -- I absolutely love the street food concept. As the counter clerk told me, this is all the sorts of foods that workers would grab fast and hot from a vendor's stand before getting back to the job. This must be a nearly universal human cultural institution. Hot dog stands, taco carts, and Yes! Now, here in the USA, we have Indian grab-n-go gastronomy.
We sampled a variety of their fare and almost nothing disappointed. Don't let the menu fool you -- Not everything actually has a 'this is hot' red chili next to it on the menu, but my kids couldn't eat any of this food. Perhaps this isn't the best choice of dining for the average tame American palate. Do you like to sweat? Read on....
Samosa Chole - Chick pea curry over samosas. The red onions were a bit overpowering, but enjoyable in moderation.
Vada Pav and Dabeli sandwiches - both were a bit strange to me, but I will be back for more. Not quite a spicy mashed potato sandwich on a slider bun, but almost -- think that in the most comfort-food sort of way possible. Once I got past the similar yet clashing textures of the potatoes & bread, the tastes were indeed very good. The nut spread garnishing the Dabeli was an excellent accent note.
Dosa - our dosa (crepe) had some cheese sparingly melted on inside, and came with a spicy yellow potato filling. Unfortunately, it didn't hold up to the take-out ride and was cold and tough by the time we got home. Delicious and I am sure it would have been great if we had just eaten it in their dining area.
The one disappointment: Me being naive regarding Indian cuisine, I didn't expect that there would be no Naan (flatbread) available. Apparently, Naan is more of a sit-down dinner thing, and the little Pav rolls (pronounced "pow", I think), were more like Wonder Bread hamburger buns. {meh} On the one hand, I appreciate that they are doing their thing, and Naan isn't part of it -- On the other, for a naive Indian food fan like me it would be nice to order a "maybe I won't like it, but what the heck" dish if it came with a side of the familiar.
On the price side, it is hard to decide what to compare it to. Most everything was under $10, but not very many things were under about $4. The little sandwiches (see above) were, in my opinion, overpriced at $3.50 for the sandwich sans combo market. Just sayin'.
Next time back, I will be sampling the saffron ice cream! I might also try the Salt Lassi - a yogurt smoothie with coriander and chilies, but it would probably involve some alcohol and a dare.
Can I just say how extremely excited I am to have a restaurant like Neehee's so close to where I live/work/play?! This is truly a gem and I know I will be going back here again and again.
There are times when I crave Indian food but my hubby is not always on the same page. Neehee's makes it so I can get my fix anytime I want - in & out...street food. Now I don't have to wait until he's in the mood - hurray!
I have so much to learn about what they have to offer. My first visit I tried the #12 - Aloo Tikki (2 pc). It was pan fried potato patties topped with chutneys, yogurt, onions and a little cilantro. It was so incredibly flavorable. I was lost at first bite. It had just the right amount of heat - the kinds that makes your mouth tingle and then subsides but yet you savor it for the next few hours.
Oh, and it's extremely affordable. My lunch only came to $4 + change. I'm keeping a "master menu" so I can work my way through it and try all sorts of new things.
Neehee's: Thank you thank you thank you for landing in Canton!
I came here at the suggestion of an Indian friend of mine. He suggested that I get Gobi Manchurian. Excellent choice! I never knew cauliflower could taste so good. Just the right amount of kick without masking the flavors underneath. It was fried with a very light batter - crispy but no too heavy. Lots of fresh cilantro and a whole bunch of flavors Im not familir enough with to point them out.
I am so so happy happy to have found this place. When I came in, it looked like I was the only one who wasn't Indian or from nearby. A good sign! It was diner atmosphere with AWESOME flavors.
Flavor flavor flavor! I can't wait to try other items on the menu!
I went into Neehee's tonight for the first time and ordered the Masala Dosa (excellent). The Sambar was also very good. I'm really excited to see a vegetarian Indian restaurant open up on Ford rd. It's a nice alternative to Ashoka which can get a bit pricey. For a fairly new business it was very busy on a Monday night which is always a good sign.
I am looking forward to going back.
P.S. The home-made ice cream also looked amazing.
NeeHee's is GREAT!!! They have excellent street food available -- everything from South Indian delicacies (Idlis, Dosas, Uttapams, etc.) to Mumbai street food (Vada Pav, PAv Bhaji, Daabeli, Veg Club Sandwich) to Chaat (Pani Puri, Bhel, Sev Puri, etc.) to Indo-Chinese snacks (Chopsuey, Manchurian, Fried Rice, Hakka Noodles)!!! Most everything is made really well, and tastes awesome. They also have Sugarcane Juice, made Indian-style, with the slight taste of ginger!! And they have ice-creams with flavors like Mango, Lychee, Guava, etc!! What more can a foodie ask for??? YUMMM!!
Loved the distinct flavors and spices on the dishes. Most of the dishes were fried or contained fried items, though. The rava dosa was really good although again a bit oily. (Favorite dosa is still at Udipi).
Nice service, tiny place.
Good fast cheap.
10/10/2009 REVISING DOWNWARD TO 3 stars. Both visits so far have been REALLY SALTY.
Went here last night and food was amazingly interesting and diverse. It's not often you get an education on wonderful food from the streets of india in such a friendly and approachable manner. Actually the only challenge you will have is figuring out what to order from their huge menu, but i'm sure once you find your favorite, you will be hooked. We found kitchen chicks review:
http://www.kitchenchic...
To make life easy, we went with what she ordered and were very surprised by the depth of flavor and texture. One quick note, these three dishes definitely had a strong sweet component which left you wanting a more savory note. Again, I'm sure once we figure out what to order. Anyway, tickled to death Canton gets another unique restaurant so close to home. YAY!
Update: Potato Burger thing = AWESOME! Szechwan Noodle = a spicy indian take on pad thai Samosa with toppings = GREAT!
So I stopped in Neehee's during a visit to my parents. With my wife being a vegetarian, us both liking Indian food as well as the simplicity of street food, the appearance of a place that sells Indian vegetarian street food seemed like an alignment of the planets or something.
The menu is rather large, with a lot of variety covering Indian food as well as an Asian/Indian fusion section. The main trouble is, not knowing the ins and outs of Indian street food, I had little idea what most things beyond a Dosa were. Clearly the menu was meant for those know what the heck they're ordering -- which pretty much seemed to be everyone else except me.
For a business that has only been open a short time, the place was packed. Stopped in on Friday evening and there was almost no room to move inside. The sign right inside the door claims a maximum indoor occupancy of 15. I counted 32 people patrons inside either eating at tables or waiting for take-out, and that number didn't include the many people working in the kitchen.
The food was hella spicy, to the point of the heat interfering with my enjoyment of the flavor. It was, however, fresh and well-prepared.
It's worth a try for the adventurous. I get the sense that a few more repeat visits I would find the thing that fits - maybe at some time when they're not so busy and I could get some suggestions and talk with the staff a little more.
I have lived in Canton for 10 years and I wanted a great Indian Food place. Ashoka was a alternative but I have my opinions & taste. Indian Street Food is just awesome as it is.
Neehee's first location in Farmington was the place to go, when I heard they were opening a location in Canton I was excited.
They have done a great job in putting the place together it is refreshing to go in and I knew the menu which got better.
The menu covers the entire range of Indian Street Food from Samosas, Chat, Pani Puri to Indo Chinese, South Indian & Homemade Ice-cream.
There is a perception that Indian food is spicy well they can customize your order please request at the time of order. The staff is very friendly and they will answer questions.

I can keep going, make sure you visit the best place to takeout Indian Street food. Delicious food, clean & great service.
As I sit here in my post Neehee's food coma, I struggle morally what to do here. Should I tell the truth, that this is the best Indian food I've had outside of England? Or should I totally trash the place, hopefully driving people away and making it less busy.. I will go for the honest route, since it looks like the secret is already out. The place was packed tonight (Monday around 8 is when I walked in). I had NO idea what to order, and I told the cashier lady the same thing. I said I wanted something fried with curry. She suggested the #55 which had a picture on the wall so that helped. The #55 was chicpeas in a red curry sauce served with fried naan bread. WOW, really tasty and somewhat spicy. Might get it more spicy next time. Then I also ordered some samosas (#8). I don't know what all was on there but oh man what a combination of ingredients. I will be back, again and again.
