Well isn't this store hip.

Ok, I like this store a lot but it oozes hipster. Ironic shirts galore. Standard hipster wear. The thing that really saves it is the quality of everything here and the fact that nothing else really compares to it in Richmond. I've bought a few shirts and hoodies from here and have managed to find some brands that have been staples in my wardrobe here. So as far as fashion forward stores in the area goes you might be hard pressed to find a place better than this. Your not going to find cloths like this anywhere else in the area. The staff has been helpful for the most part and emails will keep you up to date as far as what specials are coming through. My only complaint keeping it from 5 stars is a lack of sizes in the Men's department which can be annoying for a guy my height.

I never walk in to Need particularly needing anything, but I always walk out with a shopping bag.

Need is a clothing store that, at first blush, doesn't appear to have much to offer - parallels to Urban Outfitters are apt. Once you bother to browse through the racks, though, you'll find unique, quality clothing at price points that most wallets can actually handle.

In addition to seasonal garments there's also an ample denim wall, accessories, and shoes. The salespeople are always friendly and happy to help.

My secret for shopping at Need? The sale racks. I only wish I could visit more often.

Dory I couldn't agree more!

This place has great stuff.  They carry obscure and radical items you just can't find anywhere else.  This is a boutique one might find in a large and very hip city.  Their stuff is always new and they carry all or your fav hipster brands from Chrome to Goorin Brothers to Johnny Cupcake. They have a nice selection of Nike's, seems like they have a pretty good low tier account.
Everything is really expensive.  Oh you folks why pay $42.00 for a black t-shirt with a sentence of white writing?  I just don't see it.  Just like I don't understand American Apparel.  I walk in, oogle, and realize I just can't make myself spend that kind of money on something not made out of pure gold.  Although sometimes their shoe prices are decent...and sometimes I find something just so f-ing cool it might as well be gold.

While walking around Carytown today I discovered Need, and I can pretty much describe it in one word. Awesome. Probably the coolest store I've found in a long, long time. It reminds me of a mix between Top Shop in London and  how Urban Outfitters used to be about 10 years ago when they still sold cool, not mainstream stuff. Need has edgy, trendy clothes that you wouldn't expect to find in Richmond. Some stuff might be a little too trendy though, like a full on early 90's tracksuit. Seriously, who's gonna buy that, but besides that I'm fully digging this store. I actually might have to go back and buy this awesome purse I saw.

the jeans selection is good, but alot of the accessories are just stuff from chinatown dollar-stores, and the staff is super-snobby.

If I had to make a Main Street parallel, it would be "pared-down Urban Outfitters". Judging by the other reviews, sounds like Need was one of the originals that inspired the mass-market retailer.

I'd say prices are not cheap but it's not outrageous either--on par with what you expect from the brands they carry. Gold star for the smartly selected array of clothes and sunglasses.

New and Vintage items: jewelry, hand/messenger bags, adorable and diverse clothing selections - and it's local...loves it. They re-stock often so you can really spot some lucky bargains here (sales racks = heaven).

Loved this store.  If Urban Outfitters were less ridiculous as far as prices and trying waaaay too hard goes, it would be Need.  They had a lot of cool and unusual clothing in there, geared toward the UO/H&M/"I don't go to concerts I go to shows"/"I don't go to clubs I go to dance parties" crowd.  I tried on about 10 tops and dresses but it would have been closer to 30 if a) they had more sizes and b) money wasn't an object.  Overall they have a nice spread of price points, so you'll find something whether you're a penny pincher or the kind of person who doesn't actually spend half their paycheck on rent.  I ended up with an odd Cheap Monday top for $25 and a pair of sunglasses for $18.  Not bad.  Next time I come to Richmond I am definitely going to make a point of stopping back here.

This store has fashion forward and everyday digs for men and women. They have a great selection of the hottest brands in denim, cool t-shirts, affordable cutting edge accessories and handbags, and a kick-ass shoe collection as well. You can always find something even if you just go in to take a peek!

The staff is knowledgable and very geared towards excellent customer service. You will be treated well while updating your wardrobe and remember the experience as a positive one. The owner is very involved in what plays out on the floor and is always interested to learn more about what is missing, what people like, what is selling and what the next hottest thing is.

You will always see employees wearing the current merchandise and whatever look is in. Count on hearing the latest in music when you step into the store as well. They have very creative displays and fixtures and always have great things on sale too!

This innovative retailer has been thriving for over 10 years and continues its success brilliantly! The store is nestled in the heart of Carytown's shopping district along with many other unique locally owned stores. This area and this store in particular are a must see in Richmond. All of the hipsters hit up Need on the way to Plan 9! Go check it out!

First and foremost, Need advertises and prides itself (or at least used to) for it's "extensive" premium denim wall. On that note, I will have to beg to differ. Yes, they carry more than just your run of the mill Citizens or True Religions-- J Brand? Check. Cheap Mondays? Check. AG? Check. James Jeans? Check. Nudies? Double check. But get anymore obscure than that and you're not gonna find it there. So, if you're a denim noob, it's probably a fine place to start exploring different brands but for denim connoisseurs, I'm going to have to recommend elsewhere like the Denim Bar in Pentagon Row.

Denim aside, the clothing selection is pretty diverse. They carry everything from American Apparel basics to lacy Free People frocks to other completely obscure brands, as well as some exclusive vintage pieces.

The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about the brands they carry and I also love that they each have their own fashion sense and opinion, if you ask.

Only downside is their return policy, or lack thereof. But for the most part, anything you get from Need, you'll probably want to keep anyways.

And just to touch upon what the previous reviewer said about their accessories selection. While it is quite varied and features plenty of interesting pieces, it doesn't get updated enough, in my opinion. A pair of earrings I got from there two years ago is still being sold. I'd like to see some new things!

I've shopped here since it was a teeny tiny shop on Cary by VCU.  Like the 800 block.  Selling vinatage Levi's and the shop was called Blues. Ha!  Don't remember that?  They also used to be on Sheppard where the antique store now resides.  Anyhoo, as any store worth it's salt, they've changed their vibe a few times.  The buyers work hard to keep fresh stuff on the shelves  and on all the peeps you'll see out in da club on the weekends.  I like to go there to get an awesome tee- of which there are many to choose from.  Most of my co-workers wear these super cute animals earrings one of the staff there makes.  Dig them!  Now, if they could just convince everybody in Richmond that leggings alone are not pants....

Who am I kidding, I want the store to be my closet.  Everything in there is so cute.  However, I'm not in love with the staff.  They think they are cool because they work in a nice store.  I really hate going in there just because of that.  They act like NY stylists and glare at you if you are not decked out in 100% Urban Outfitters.  Other than the staff, the place rules.  I think it is just as expensive as UO.  $78 for a dress is cheaper than UO?  Come on people, who are you trying to kid?
