Brought my kitten here two times for his vaccines. Everything went really smoothly and quickly. I only had to wait about 10 minutes for the Vet. They really seemed to care about him and how he was doing. I even got a "check up" call from Dr. Henderson a few weeks after I had purchased some dental chews and medicine for him.
The office is pretty small, and nothing fancy, but they had a lot of magazines to choose from. And I was actually able to get parking less than a block away, both times.
I joined Yelp just to write this review.
About a month ago, my 3 year old cat was very, very ill. Another vet did not seem to know what was wrong with him and referred me to an emergency clinic out in the burbs. To make a very long and sad story short, after spending over $5K I found out my cat was in the end stages of feline leukemia and there was nothing I could do.
I don't have a car, and I'm not a millionaire, so continuing care at this emergency vet was impossible. I live around the corner from Near North Animal Hospital, and my cat had been to see Dr. Henderson once before for a minor ear problem.
She's now treating my cat and has been absolutely wonderful. She is a young vet, but I don't mind that because I feel like she puts a lot of effort into researching and learning as much as she can in order to provide the best treatment possible. I had read up on some medicines that I thought might work for my cat, and she took my suggestions and did her own research. She even told me that she thought one of them wouldn't be effective, when she could've easily sold it to me and taken my money. She even had a vet pharmacy ship one drug directly to my house, which saved greatly on costs.
Dr. Henderson always calls to check on how my kitty is doing, and even though I know there is no way for him to get better, she is making this entire process as bearable as it could possibly be. She has a great bedside manner and I can tell she really cares about the animals she treats.
The only downside is that the prices are kind of expensive. They aren't outrageous (especially for the area), but there are definitely cheaper vets out there. I don't mind (after spending around $7K total on a dying cat I'm insane and on my way to bankruptcy--did I mention I'm an unemployed law student? Shoot me.) because I feel like my cat is getting high quality treatment from a caring vet.
These are the most uncaring, uniformed group of people I have ever met. Referred to Dr. Boin to spay my dog. Surgery scheduled for 10am. Get a call at 2pm, puppy just went into surgery as "it was a slow day so the doctor started late." Then find out Dr. Boin did not even do the surgery himself!!! Referred the procedure to the young, baby-talking vet in the office who could not even stick around to be there when I picked up my puppy. Dr. Boin was told from the beginning I was referred to him by a family friend who is a vet himself.
Showed at 6pm to pick up puppy. NO ONE met with me. My poor still groggy puppy stumbled into my arms crying. NO ONE went over post-op directions. Had to ask for post-op directions. Waited for printed handout.. Asked when do I come back for suture removal? Told to come back "whenever""!!!! What?!!!!
Last straw was I was given unlabeled pain meds WITH NO WRITTEN DIRECTIONS !! There ought to be a law against that:distributing unlabeled medicine.
At suture removal the baby-talking vet who did the surgery was upset that the technician called HER into the room to remove sutures. The vet noted one slightly infected suture and yelled at the technician to remove it as the vet strutted out of the room.
I blame Dr. Boin for refusing to see my puppy himself and allowing such an uncaring colleague to fill in for him WITHOUT asking my permission. As I said before, Dr. Boin was told we were referred to him!
Never ever went back. Tell everyone I know about the terrible care at Near North Animal .
I've very underwhelmed by this establishment. The receptionist was friendly, and the staff is alright, but the doctor was extremely unpleasant, almost apathetic. They charged a fee that was definitely above average, $80 for the visit/check up, which was not very thorough by any means and they charged another $100 for bortadella and dapp booster (those same shots combined can be done at a Petco for about 1/4 the price). I don't mind paying more money if I really liked the service/people, but I refuse to pay that much when I don't like the care and thoroughness of the vet. I would never recommend taking your dog there unless you want a substandard service at inflated prices.
All I can say is that my cats have a better Doctor than me! Dr. Henderson is AMAZING! She follows up regularly on the status of my cats skin growth (which seems to be extremely difficult to treat) and she ALWAYS returns phone calls promptly! I couldn't as for a better vet - if only she was an MD!
My husband is usually the one who takes Summer to the vet and after my adventure with her there yesterday I now know why. The moment we walked in Summer completely freaked out...she started running all over the waiting room and when I sat down to try to calm her down she jumped right into my lap and clung to me for dear life. And let's just say at 29.3 lbs (according to the vet!) she's a bit big to be a lap dog.
Our mission at the vet was simple...to draw some blood to test her for heart warms. I tried to explain to her it wasn't a big deal and we were on an adventure just like Marley and Jennifer Aniston! Someone at the vet politely pointed out that maybe that's not the best comparison since Marley actually does die...oops.
I never thought we'd be able to get Summer up on the vet's table to get her blood drawn, but fortunately the 2 staff members (one of them being Dr Henderson) that greeted me have been thru this before. They got Summer up on the table in no time, took a bit of blood while i stroked her face, and we were outta there within a few minutes. And Summer was so brave...I have to admit I got a little queasy when I saw the needle, but she took it better than even Marley could have!
I just read a review about a dog name Bentley. Funny, I have a cat named Bentley and I am crazy about her too!! :)
I got my kitty in February 09, and chose this vet on Yelp ratings alone (plus the convenient location didn't hurt). I have not been disappointed.
We have gone 3 times: overall check up, post animal ER care, and spay. Dr. Henderson is very laid back, gentle, friendly and genuinely loves each animal. After the animal ER experience (at the amazing Chicago Veterinary ER), Dr Henderson and her staff let me visit, didn't act annoyed at all of my calling (I was a nervous wreck) and took excellent care of her.
Also, the prices are reasonable. The place is very small and plain, but I'd rather have a great vet with reasonable prices than spacious and fancy.
I'll be the first to admit it, I am a little crazy when it comes to my dog Bentley. The doctors, technicians, and staff at Near North all feel the same way about their patients though!
Bentley has been going to Near North for about 2 years now. Fortunately, we have never had any major health problems (knock on wood), but we have had a few emergency situations.
Whenever I call frantic with a question or problem with Bentley, Amy always reassures me that it will be ok and gets Bentley an appointment to see Dr. Boin ASAP. Most dogs freak out when they go to the vet, but Bentley loves to see all of his friends that take great care of him at Near North!
I am proud to be a feline Mommy, and my 2 babies get along with w/Dr. Boin and the vet techs. I had a slight scare last year, when I realized that Scarlett(one of my cats) was about to have an ingrown nail. I took her in and they assured me everything was fine. They keep good records and send you a reminder when your pets are due for their shots/annual etc.
My ONLY complaint was Dr. Boin's suggestion that the cats get their teeth cleaned(his repeated, STRONG suggestion), not because their gums were inflamed, not because they had cavitites but because "their breath smells bad"......they are CATS......I dont expect them to have minty breath. Now if they were in pain or needed a tooth pulled I would have no problem paying $400 in dental work, but not for them to have a sweeter breath- I think the cat treats for tartar work just fine.
This is where Ms. Lucy goes for all her medical and manicure needs. They are very good to her, even if she does try and jump on the counter to eat all their treats.
I really like all of the staff here, and Lucy has been known to give a lick or two to the technicians, so in her eyes it cant be all that bad either. Plus I call to ask the most random questions about behavior etc., and they are always willing to take a few minutes and answer my questions.
Milo and Otis really enjoy it here. I mean- as much as they can enjoy getting a thermometer crammed up their tushies. But they don't seem to be nearly as traumatized leaving here as the other vets we have tried in the city. They seem to be actually concerned with my kitties well being and less about bringing in as much business as they can.
When my old kitty was getting feeble and having all sorts of problems I brought her in. They told me that they could go in try to do a liver transplant and give her meds and shots every day for the next few months, or I could try giving her iron supplements. I appreciated that they gave me a reasonable choice without A. Breaking my bank or B. Making me feel like a not good mom to my kitty for not getting an outrageous surgery.
Nice folks all around and I would not go anywhere with my feline pals.
I have been taking my pets to Dr. Boin for over a decade. It started with my first cat, whiskey. I had just moved to Chicago and was looking for a pet doctor when a neighbor recommended Dr. Boin. Now, 14 years later, and 30 minutes away, I still take my entire non-homosepience family to Dr. Boin. The office is clean, staff super friendly and of course Dr. Boin is one of the kindest people that you would ever meet. I highly recommend this place if you are as crazy about your pets as I am.
I travel some and have used them a lot for boarding care. My doggie loves it, so I love it. The staff is incredibly friendly - they love to see Henry show up and hate to see him leave. I did have a vet appt with the doc once (don't remember which one) and his bedside manner was so-so.
I would definitely recommend this place.
After reading the reviews here on Yelp, I was really hoping this was going to be a great hospital. Unfortunately, I did not have the same experience as everyone else.
I brought my cat in for an annual check up. The vet told me I should get a dental cleaning for her as her gums were becoming red and inflamed. So I set up an appointment for the cleaning and brought her in soon thereafter. She had to go in early and be put under aesthesia so it would be a whole day ordeal. At around 1pm, one of the vets called me and said that he thinks my cat is too young to be undergoing a dental cleaning like that and he would like to run some blood tests to see if the infection is being caused by something else. I was glad he called but I was confused as to why one vet told me to get a dental cleaning while the other vet thought otherwise. He then said, "I would've called you earlier but I didn't have time." He could've told the receptionist to call me, couldn't he?
So around 5pm I picked up my cat and paid the bill... 3 weeks later, I had not received any phone calls to follow up on the blood tests. When I finally called, the woman who picked up the phone told me the results were negative.. and didn't even sound like she knew what that meant or what it was testing for. So I paused waiting for her to give me further information or advice on where to go from there. When she didn't, I asked if I should get the dental cleaning now since the results were negative. She didn't seem to know and said "Um.... I'll have the doctor call you." Well, it's been 5 days and still no call.
I was really disappointed with the communication the office and vets had with their patients. I guess it's time to look for yet another animal hospital. Well at least you got my money...
We have a ten month old pug who has been going to Near North for his shots and neutering. The doctors and staff are very compassionate and Cecil gets so excited when he goes there, even if it means he's getting a shot! When we went on a 10 day trip/cruise, they took care of Cecil the whole time. Every time we called, Cecil was sitting at the feet of one of the vet techs. I highly recommend Near North to anyone who is looking for a new vet. It's conveniently located in Old Town, near Division/Wells.
My cats have only been patients here for a few months, but between the 2 of them they've been there 6 times, including dental cleaning for each of them. The prices seem quite reasonable for the location. They're comparable to the prices I'm used to paying back in the Detroit burbs. The staff really seems to care about the animals. They are also friendly and don't mind answering questions. My only complaint is that the appointments don't always run on time.
Dr. Boin took the time to answer all my paranoid new-mommy questions. I didn't even realize we'd been there for over an hour until I asked the time. Dr. Boin was kind enough to explain WHY he would recommend this vaccine or that vaccine and patient with my questions even when we disagreed on a method. As a result, I felt very comfortable with him and his patient care.
They were both really gentle in their handling of my adorable baby. Dr. Boin explained some things I was sadly ignorant of - like needing bordatella to go to the dog parks (I didn't know how they would enforce that rule until I looked on-line - you have to buy a permit and they do sell out, I've been told!) and that the lyme disease vaccine requires a series of injections the first time so he needed to start right away if we were going to go hiking/camping in WI.
I feel so comfortable with Dr. Boin...I intend to go ahead and switch my cat (older and needing more careful watching) over to his practice.
Oh - and I forgot to mention the help Dr. Boin gave me with housetraining and, upon a subsequent remark, preventing separation anxiety/promoting independence in my "velcro" dog. Thanks!
The cost was completely reasonable for what we had done.
PS - Dr. Boin was also great on a follow up visit with my elder cat - and the assistant was really nice and helpful. I admit it always ups someone in my esteem when they admire my pets so much! My cat has a pair of cysts, allergies and an elevated thyroid level but Dr. Boin was cautiously optimistic after the weigh in and provided good treatment and great advice!
Update#2: Demoted 1 star for similar emergency response to rating above but for slightly different reason.
First call with J-somebody (guy) was great and he said "watch him, he probably just scratched his trachea when he ate the twigs. If you see X, Y & Z - then you'll need a doc." Reasonable and helpful. I called later because he seemed less himself and the woman who answered the phone boiled it down to, "We can't take emergencies, you'll have to take him to a clinic with larger number of vets" - at no point did she suggest WHO Near North normally works with for emergency services (most places use the joint up on Clybourne) and her attitude was callous and dismissive. I forgot to e-mail the doc to complain.
I don't ding them for not taking emergencies (they only have 1 vet, which is why you see the same doctor each time - a good thing), but that woman should have helped REFER one of Dr. Boin's patients to one (or more) clinic (s) that is typically used for his emergency casees.
I went to Near North vet with my 8 year old cat. We saw Dr. Boin. My cat is pretty overweight, and I have been asking vets for YEARS how to help him lose weight. No one has given me more information and seemed as informed as Dr. Boin. He talked with me for about 20 minutes just about changes I could make in my cat's diet to lower his risk of diabetes, such as adding wet food to his diet to increase protein intake. I was very impressed with the amount of time and attention Dr. Boin gave us.
This is where we bring Lucky for all of his veterinary care. The staff is friendly and very helpful. My only complaint is that it can get a little hairy - it wouldn't hurt to vacuum more frequently.
I took my cat here recently, and I was very impressed with both the quality and the price. My cat was in for a routine physical, a travel form, a rabies vaccination and a slight ear infection. The cost for everything, including two medications, was $150--very reasonable for a vet in the city. The staff were very friendly, helpful, and patient with my agitated cat. If I weren't moving, I would definitely go back.
