In my quest for the best I stumbled upon Nazo's...
Okay stumble isn't exactly the truth. More like received a text message that said
' You like tuna? Meet me at Nazo's. It's on 8th between Fig and Flower'  Any-who so yes, I had the Tuna Sandwich on Sourdough bread not to be confused with a Tuna Melt.. (Although a good melted cheese never really is a disadvantage in my eyes. Sorry to side track.. Melted cheese tends to do that to me.) I felt like a cold something or another so the Tuna Sandwich was marvelous, made to order, however you want it with a variety of breads to choose from. Along with the tuna and bread the spread included lettuce, tomato, pickles with salt and pepper (which was awesome because some places leave things too bland). Okay I know the ingredients sound pretty basic but it was such a great sandwich. All the veggies had the taste of impressive freshness and the tuna did not taste like it had been sitting around for hours, I just really enjoyed every bite and was totally happy afterwards no eaters remorse. Since this place is a bakery I will be back to try some of there baked goods but on this occasion lunch was the only thing I had on my hungry tummy mind. I enjoyed the quaint, cozy atmosphere. There are two tables inside and two outside, perfect for a lunch date. I would know because that is how I ended up there! The people who worked the place I am pretty sure owned it too which is awesome and I love. Screw you again Subway with your number one franchise in the world! I have found a better place and will not give in to your dullness and not so awesome service.

The seafood salad and egg salad sandwiches on whole wheat bread are SOOOOO good you can't believe it.  Even if the seafood salad isn't on the menu they often have it.  There are a couple of tables, but this is truly a take-out situation.

Nazo's is a great little bakery. I've only had breakfast from them, and at that I've only had their bagel with swiss cheese, which is absolutely scrumptious. The service is always friendly + they have my order ready in the quickness.  The set-up is kind of small, but I'm usually only in there for a moment.

Breakfast: Their wide array of pastries and breakfast sandwiches are pleasing to both the palate and the belly. They bake and serve everything from turkey and cheese stuffed croissants, to cinnamon rolls and apple turnovers.

Lunch: My favorite place downtown to get my sandwich freak on. So what if a sandwich is $7? It's DELICIOUS and their selection is pretty huge for a mom-n-pop deli. My two favorites are the egg salad sandwich and pastrami sandwich... you can literally have half for lunch and half for dinner. Yumskie. Pick your own bread and fillings, grab a bag of chips, and GET BACK TO WORK. Quickly.

Cash Only.

I've been working downtown for 6 years and frequent this place. Their morning pastries for the most part are made fresh every single day. My two faves are the tomato bagel and apple turnover, their house coffee is good and vanilla lattes are even better.

You cannot get a better deli sandwich for the price anywhere downtown, their chicken salad sandwich is out of this world and just as big (it's huge!) It gets crowded about noontime so if you don't like waiting call your order in.

My only issue is when I am walking by salivating over my coffee and turnover at 7:30 AM and they're closed! It's a family business and for the most part don't have a definite set schedule, days like these I settle for Coffee Bean.....

Great pastries, great coffee and mouth watering sandwiches (if there is such a thing)

A good solid sandwich for a fair price. The ingredients are basic, but the sandwich is good tasting and good sized. Compared to Mendocino Farms you trade taste for price, but who wants to shell out $10 every day for a sandwich?!
Their pastries and coffee are pretty good, but usually I don't have room for dessert after the sandwich and chips .

This is the best coffee and sandwich place downtown, period.  And, I did get a laugh from the review that says the people seem sleep deprived, as they probably are because they work so hard.

The family that runs the place is wonderful; and the mother makes the most amazing apple turnovers I have ever had in my life.  Then there are the ham and cheese croissants, and the plain croissants....which since I am on a diet, I can't eat.  Rats.  They are the best around.

I do come here for lunch; soup and sandwich with chips under 7 bucks, and all freshly made.  Highly recommend the turkey, and if you like it, the egg salad is tremendous.

And, they also run Pizza Next Door.  Excellent, New York style pizza, get a whole one and take it back to the office or buy it by the slice with a salad.

Darn low carb diets!!!  Now I must stop drooling and get on the elliptical machine of torture.  And, go to Nazo's tomorrow morning.

Their spinach, tomato and cheese croissants are huge, delicious and only available every so often. When they are available, it is hilarious because my co-wokers and I buy 5 at a time and they are only $2.50. Is it possible to blackmail you with one less star so you can make these delicious treats more often? Pretty Please?

Damn, get there early for first pick on breakfast croissants!  When I arrived at 9ish, there was just sausage & cheese and ham & cheese left.  I went for the ham and gooey cheese.  It's more of a "filled" pastry than a sandwich.  But they also do egg sandwiches, which are about $4.50, whereas the filled ones are $2 less.

To be honest, I don't even like croissants but this flaky soft, doughy goodness was delicious!!!

They do a lot of office catering....we'll need to give 'em a try.

A decent lunch for $5.*  What a relief!  Lunching in Downtown adds up!

*The $5 Special featured that day was your choice of either Egg Salad or Tuna with chips and a can soda.

Nazo's is pretty much the only spot I'll buy a sandwich from!! It always tastes fresh and I LOVE that they pack it w/ avocado when you request avocado!!
And HOW COOL Just today, I noticed a little round sticker on the door, "They love us on Yelp!" or something like that! LOL!

If I'm ever in downtown LA, and I cannot make it to Langer's for hot pastrami, this becomes the viable second option.

When I worked at one of the towers on 7th and Figueroa, the office used to get us catered sandwich lunches from this place to keep us from leaving our desks.  Yeah, most of the time it worked.

For the last few years, I've attended the E3 Expo at the LACC.  Instead of paying the insane prices for the convention food vendors, I'd just take the nice walk to Nazo's, granted that I did not run into any street vendors serving a "Downtown LA Dog" (grilled dog wrapped in bacon with grilled onions & peppers, mustard, ketchup, & mayo).

Even though Nazo's sandwiches may seem pretty basic, for some reason they just hit the spot when you have them.  In the quest for building a better, bigger sandwich, they've stumbled upon just the right ratio of meat, veggies, and condiments to top a sandwich with.  I prefer any of the turkey sandwiches using rye, sourdough, or onion bread.  They need a webcam in their kitchen so I can learn whatever it is that they're doing to make great, but simple sandwiches.  A sandwich with chips and soda weigh in at a little over $6.

ok right off the bat...I must admit, I've never been a huge sandwich fan...but Nazos has made a fan out of me.

the only con with this place (as most good downtown lunch spots) is that if you hit it at the wrong time...you're going to wait- and for quite some time.

the sandwiches are delicious - my personal fav is the $5 lunch special tuna (with avacado added)...the chocolate chips are a must - crispy on the outside, melted chocolate chips as you bite into it...doesn't get any better from a mom & pop sandwich place - subway 2 doors down doesn't even hold a candle to them.

Would you like to know what's better than Nazo's chocolate chip croissant? Better than their chocolate chip croissant with bananas?...

???

It's the superduperdeluxe chocolate chip croissant with bananas, strawberries, and cream cheese!!! And they're BIG. I was able to eat half for breakfast, and the other half for my second breakfast (need the sugar to make work interesting). The caramel apple pie is also pretty good. It has about a 2:1 apple-to-crust ratio, just how I like it. Almost all the croissants are around two bucks, and they probably all taste better than those disgusting croissant-looking things at Jack and the Box.

My only complaint is that they don't label any of the goodies behind the counter. I was pointing to everything asking, "What is that? And that? How about that?" Some labels wouldn't hurt, Nazo's!

Basically, it's the grown-up equivalent of having your mother pack your lunch, minus the spiffy Transformers or My Little Pony lunch box.  Nazo's makes simple, honest, straightforward sammiches.  There are no tricks.  No secret recipes.  There are no special ingredients.  And that's OK.  There doesn't have to be.

Their croissants are nothing to write home about.  These are baked in house, sure, but I simply cannot evoke cherubs, trumpets, and an all boys choir over generic raw pastry dough purchased in bulk from a wholesale food distributor of suspicious (but likely Smart-and-Final-esque) pedigree.  If it serves as any indication, their pies and cakes are bought from CostCo.  A wink and a smile goes out to the other dude who noticed.

I think Downtown is starved from a lack of good wholesome food, so anything you can find that isn't fast food or an overpriced chain restaurant tastes like freakin' ambrosia.

They make a good sandwich, they have fresh squeezed carrot, grapefruit, and orange juices, and they have their own little version of the Egg McMuffin.  And they're nice, down to earth people.  This is enough for me.

MAN ALIVE!

They're not kidding about the chocolate croissant.  I went there for the first time with the intentions of grabbing one for myself to see if it lived up to its hype.  Boy howdy, it's delicious.  I just want to cram the whole thing into my mouth, forgetting all about my portion control rules.

I like that it's doughey more than flakey, because it isn't as dry as most corporate chain cafes have (which, from experience, those cafes have the baked goods brought in from somewhere else, and you can taste the non-freshness).

A ham 'n' cheese croissant is what I'll have to try next, and I don't even like ham!  Maybe they have bacon, egg 'n' cheese...

Take out sandwich joint. Almost everything there is from Costco, esp. the breads, pastries, etc.
The price is right as the sandwiches are full and come with a small bag of chips.
They own Pizza Next Door, which amazingly enough, is nextdoor.

Indeed, the chocolate croissant is amazing. The croissant itself wasn't quite perfect--it was a little too doughy/not flaky enough. But the rich dark chocolate inside made this absolutely decadent. With a slight bit better texture this croissant would have been to die for.

update: this is a downtown gem. have always liked the  turkey and cheese croissants.

This place has me hooked. The chocolate croissant is the best thing ever. That is until I tried there new chocolate and banana pastry..WOW! I don't even like banana that much and this is the best pastry I have ever tasted. Especially when you can wash it down with  a $2.50 iced vanilla latte that is also great. The only problem is that this place is making me fat.

If you are downtown you can't pass this up.  Nazo's is a small family run bakery/cafe.  The owner's will know you after you've eaten there once and the chocolate croissant is amazing!  It's super cheap too, great food on a budget.  They also have sandwiches and fresh juice. Yummy!

I miss you Nazo's...it's been too long.  I loved your turkey & cheese and ham & cheese croissants for breakfast, i heart the turkey, cheese and avocado on croissant (or if i felt healthy that day, on your freshly baked roll), and if I wanted to treat myself for an afternoon treat, I'd split the strawberry & cheese croissant with a friend.  The Husband was kind enough to pick up a turkey croissant and  sandwich for me and a girlfriend when we were at  the convention center not too long ago, and you are as good as I remember.

I loved my ham and cheese croissant, which I had them heat up for me. It is of the soft and greasy croissant variety. The croissant I loved of this ilk, that is no longer there, but may provide you a frame of reference was at 3rd and Alameda, now inhabited by Beard Papa. Also soft and greasy.  Since that place is no longer there, Nazo's is a fine replacement. As a result, I tried pizza next door. For my calories, I'd rather spend them at NY Pizza at 6th and Grand. I digress, have the croissant!

I'm pretty particular about my sandwiches so I rarely get them because they are usually a let down.  But, my co-workers kept raving and raving about this place and how they are addicted to Nazo's sandwiches.  I forgot to pack my lunch one day and decided to try Nazo's.  I was expecting a sandwich with awesome bread and meats.  This place...NO.  The bread was just sandwich bread I could buy from Ralphs and the meat wasn't so special.  It reminded me of my Sandbag's experience.  Total letdown.  At least it wasn't as expensive as Sandbags.  But I was still disappointed.  Just a standard sandwich.  I'd rather have eated Subway.

I've never tried their chocolate croissants, but I think I will have to try one next time. I LOVE their cinnamon twist pastry and a close second is their apple turnovers. They do bake them right there in the back. They are NOT from Cosco, though it appears that the muffins and cakes are...
It makes my morning better to start it with a large coffee and a warm cinnamon twist right out of the oven. The turkey and cheese croissant and tomato cheese bagel are also good and appear to be made on the premises.
I like their coffee and love the fact that they are a family-owned and operated business. The place has a billion times more soul than Starsux. There are closer places to get coffee to my job, but I seem to always find myself walking through the alley behind my building, headed to Nazo's. Colleagues have told me that their sandwiches are good, but I haven't tried them yet. The prices look reasonable.

Used to come here all the time for lunch- it's fine- a little family run cafe, nothing special.  Prices are good.   Personally, I thought the service was always a little gruff (however, Eric is nice), but then again, they were serving the harried lunch crowd.  Never tried the aforementioned chocolate crossaint, but those muffins did suspiciously taste like Costco's!
